- xertys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28I can never understand the mentality of some in the Linux community. Many go to great lengths to get people to switch from Windows to Linux, but when these people do, they are criticised for using a particular distro because it is perceived as being as somehow inferior.
Linux is Linux. GNOME is GNOME. If you like Gentoo, good for you. Some of us like Ubuntu though.
People like you only help to destroy the community Linux has created. - stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28As york2600 said below:

Sorry for the comment abuse, I felt it was important. - mostapha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27I currently use FC4. When I tried a Feisty Herd CD a week or so ago I was pretty amazed at how simple things have gotten, and how polished the desktop has become.
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Maybe you should stick to the Gentoo comment threads too then, eh?
Oh wait... there aren't any :P - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I upgraded as well, and want to throw this warning out:
Be aware that Feisty has the 2.6.20 kernel, which renames all hard drives from /dev/hda[a,b,c..] to /dev/sd[a,b,c...]
The /etc/fstab and grub config *should* point to to a partitionID rather than hard coded /dev/hda1, but I had edited mine manually and had to change the paths after upgrading. - york2600, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Just a request. - martalli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16While the above link has great screen shots, according to the developers on Freenode's #ubuntu+1 channel, a simple
"update-manager -d"
is all that is necessary. Refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FeistyUpgrades for any further instructions. - socket, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16You mean that even PATA devices are named sdx?
- zixxer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14if you dont need to run fedora or an RPM based distro...i wouldnt. fedora goes stale wayyyyy too fast.
this is from someone who runs about 40 fedora servers. its probably worth your time to try out ubuntu, or at least debian! - cronot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13@ahawks:
Huh? Please give me links that elaborate on these changes. According to what you said, all IDE drives are now treated as SCSI drives? Because the hd* nomenclature was traditionally used for ATA devices, while the sd* nomenclature was used for SCSI devices (or at least devices that presented themselves as SCSI devices).
Please enlighten me - I'm not poking at you, I'm genuinely curious about this. - vln004, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12use the torrent, save them some bandwidth.

We need your help to make feisty what it deserves to become as soon as possible. - kevjaun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Only a month till the actual release, as a desktop user I don't see the rush. edgy isn't bad enough for me to chase down betas.

1) Take Backup of your system and then do upgrade
2) Ubuntu Feisty Fawn is still in beat - ssam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/feisty/beta/ for the powerpc and ps3 versions of feisty beta

It is correct, all ATA drives are using libata in Ubuntu 7.04 beta, hence they are all /dev/sd* devices.
More information: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/libata-for-all-ata-disks - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"And since most ppl treated the Alpha like a Beta"
I've found Herds 4 and 5 to be more stable than the Edgy release. It's made Ubuntu my primary OS again. - awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@socket:
As a former Gentoo user, I would've wholeheartedly agreed with you a couple months ago. Since trying ubuntu though, I just can't muster the motivation to reinstall Gentoo. Sure, I can't *stand* having to install libgtk2.0-dev just for headers instead of `emerge gtk', and I would prefer to have the much more intuitive and manageable file setups ( /etc/conf.d, /etc/portage, /etc/init.d (exists in ubuntu but improved in gentoo) ), but Ubuntu is really underrated by a lot of Gentoo users.
Every little thing is perfectly set up. When I installed on my laptop, *every* single piece of hardware was detected and set up perfectly. From the volume buttons (which I *never* got working in Gentoo), to the wireless card. In Gentoo, I remember having spent hours on end trying to configure X11 alone perfectly in order to use my odd 1280x800 screen and my synaptics touchpad.
Be open-minded. - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Sure, it's the first to come pre-configured with an accelerated X server but that can be configured with 1-3 lines in your xorg.conf. There really aren't any pressing reasons to update to feisty, but I'd recommend it for a fresh install at this stage.
- Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Nice! That would be my desktop wallpaper if I used Ubuntu. :) It's kind of hard to come up with something that cool based on the boring PCLinuxOS logo.
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It's not a big deal to me, since I use beryl already, but Feisty is the first Ubuntu release to come with an accelerated X server (7.2?) and Compiz.
- dystopianray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@tokyomaster
libata is cleaner, saner and more robust than the regular ide drivers. libata will provide improved error handling and power management, among other benefits. Of course, there will likely be teething problems, so please test the beta and report any bugs you find. - UBfusion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'd like to warn owners of a motherboard with Intel 965 chipset motherboard like mine (and some Intel-based laptops), with ICH6 or ICH8 and Jmicron controllers, most probably you won't be able to boot the cd due to an abnormal exit error. This is due to two critical bugs that will probably be fixed in the new kernel to be released on Monday 0326. Please be patient :-)
- tokyomonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6my question now is, why???
edit: found this link from what dystopian posted: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LibAtaForAtaDisks
apparently it's for simplicities sake.
grr. - stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@nutcase: Let me start a list:
1. josh1413 - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5AIGLX will not work with the closed-source ATi drivers. It will work with the open-source radeon driver, but you lose some acceleration.
- bcmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yeah herd 5 was the last Alpha release and now it's Beta. And since most ppl treated the Alpha like a Beta I am sure they will treat the Beta like a release.
at least I will :p - tokyomonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@cronot, sda was also used for sata, i'm pretty sure. I just mention this because it's likely that ahawk has all sata drives, rather than scsi.
- dystopianray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It is possible to install 8800 supporting drivers in the livecd environment so that you can start X. Otherwise, you could use the alternative install cd which does not boot into X.
If you have a spare video card laying around (or onboard video) you could temporarily use that for the install and then swap the 8800 in after you have installed the latest nvidia binary drivers. - JeffD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LibAtaForAtaDisks
"The success of libata for SATA support has resulted in Alan Cox working to port the existing IDE subsystem drivers to libata as well. This will eventually result in us having to only cope with one "storage" subsystem and make our lives somewhat simpler. In a gesture of being good community members, we can offer Alan wide-spread testing for his code by deploying it in our development release and make a positive contribution to the community." - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Ubuntu users should stay away from betas."
I couldn't disagree more, certainly for Feisty. The /alphas/ are more solid than Edgy /release/ by a long way. Everything works, including GNOME with Enlightenment (e-Gnome). Bloody great stuff. The only bug I have come across is known, and is to do with the OK button on the PPTP VPN password dialogue box. - zixxer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4if it doesnt the nvidia drivers do now
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4To clarify, yes, all PATA and SATA drives are now labeled as sdX. I don't know why.
I am on a laptop with ONLY PATA devices, and this is evidence:
$ ls /dev/sd* /dev/hd*
ls: /dev/hd*: No such file or directory
/dev/sda /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2 /dev/sda5 /dev/sda6
$ ll /dev/cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2007-03-23 10:15 /dev/cdrom -> scd0 - immrlizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yep, Wireless support got much better in Feisty. I have been testing since herd2 and it has come a long way since then. I am looking forward to the official release. I have 3 machines ( 2 desktops and one laptop) running it now and one even has an ATI card that I couldn't get to work well in edgy. It worked great from setup in herd5. Hats off to the dev team and all of the testers that don't mind helping test this. This is a big step in stability. I was just telling my wife tonight how much I really like this new version.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4PS3 !
Go ubuntu! :D I was hoping ubuntu will have a ps3 install, and was kinda disheartened to see no mention of even PPC on the download page. - nick0909, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And, for me at least, it actually went faster. Imagine that.
- iluvdrbonner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Beryl works, just make sure you install python2.4 It gave me gripe about that.
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"create a wiki page for your laptop"
Done and done. Added my Acer, but had very little to report. - zixxer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it should at least install, but the new nvidia drivers will fix any problem with X not wanting to run...so it will at least work
- sid0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=201 is the correct link. Good luck. :)
- lampshade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Will the new accelerated goodness work with ATI cards or not then? I have the x300 and I've had no end of trouble trying to get AiGLX to work with it. Is this different now? I can get XGL+Beryl to work, but again, I've never had AiGLX work for me.
- trollzor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Last benchmarks I saw had Mandrake beating Gentoo on performance, and a bit of googling shows that perhaps there was a re-run where Gentoo pulled a little ahead of Mandrake 9.1. The point is however, that Gentoo unless configured by an absolute wizard is not faster than your average distro, and if it is configured by a wizard for hours only a tiny bit faster.
Gentoo looks really cool though, like you'd learn a lot of things while you install and run it. But performance isn't a selling point. - tokyomonster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That's my question too socket. That seems very wrong.
- generalloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"
Cool! The day that Ubuntu allows me to delete stuff that's from their metapackage is the day I bow down and hug them. Until then, I'll always be slightly bitter for them FORCING me to have a gazillion programs I DON"T WANT. But hey, its a great system!
"
There's a specification for what you want here, the developers definitely see the current implentation as a bit of a kludge: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RecommendsSupport
Recommends is supported in all the packaging frontends now (see https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/recommends-support/+deptree ) so all that's needed is to implement the spec for metapackages. Maybe in Feisty +1 :) - generalloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, but only in this beta. A fix was released but it _just_ missed the Feisty beta deadline, so if you can't get it to work with the beta, do as the OP said and try the .isos htey release next week which will fix the jmicron bug.
As for Dapper LTS, there's another fix for it in dapper-proposed.
See this bug report: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/84964/ (feisty)
(dapper) https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bug/57502/ - imjustabill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been having the same problem (using a rt2500 card). There's a bug in the current driver where it won't interface with the networking applications, but you can still use iwconfig and ifconfig to bring it up manually. The bug is reported and a fix is being worked on, so it should be working fine by the final release.
