- bettermentflux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33The screenshots don't really show much. A better list of what's new can be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/herd1
The main changes/additions at this early stage:
Gnome 2.17
Kernel 2.6.19 (with ext4, GFS clustered file system, and eCryptFS support)
New Games: Sudoku and Chess
Disk Usage Analyzer update (Your disk in ring view)
Merge of new and updated Debian packages (full list here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuWeeklyNewsletter/Issue22#head-4517186ac5555585fc00d672877a66399da3710b )
Better processor frequency scaling in gnome-power-manager (allowing you to save battery power)
Some backend upgrades to theme support
This is a VERY early release intended for developers and beta-testers. NOT for production systems.

- airencracken, on 10/12/2007, -24/+48The next release should be called Fervent Fanboy.
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26As an avid ubuntu user I find these screenshot diggs for ubuntu to be incredibly lame. The screenshots from version to version are almost identical.
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22ubuntu desktop ISOs are always live.

This early on, they haven't finalized any artwork and are just reusing Edgy's art. I think Feisty is supposted to get an all-new look (for Ubuntu at least, maybe not Kubuntu) and it's not supposed to be brown anymore.
Installing binary drivers by default ( https://blueprints.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+spec/binary-driver-education ) and turning on X compositing by default ( https://blueprints.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+spec/composite-by-default ) are high and essential goals, respectively, for Feisty. I'll bet anything Beryl and maybe Compiz are included by default, but not switched on. Gnome's Metacity will use X's composite extension, so some of Beryl's effects may be default in Gnome by then, though it'll probably be toned down a lot. We'll almost definitely get drop shadows and likely a cube or some sort of desktop switching animation as well as animations for minimizing, restoring and closing windows. KWin already does the drop shadows and transparency for KDE. - gdgi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2250000 open source developers and not a spellchecker to be found
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Didn't you get the memmo?
- Wisgary, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Whoa, that's awesome, it looks kinda like the Ubuntu I'm posting from now. EXACTLY LIKE IT IN FACT.
- buzzedlightyear, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18its not enough that they put them in easy to install packages, you want them installed and on by default?
- bcardarella, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18I agree. Didn't someone from Ubuntu say that Fawn was supposed to focus on the UI... from those screen shots (although they are alpha) I don't see any UI upgrades. Digg me down but both the Gnome and KDE UIs are boring to me as a user. Linux isn't going to make serious theats to Windows/OS X unless it has a UI that doesn't look like crap. I don't care how powerful the UIs are, the casual user barely uses most of those features... they just want to point and click, point and click.
- asuraci, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Wake me up when they actually change something. These screenshots show virtually nothing that's significantly different from Dapper.
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12It might not be so much that he wants them on by default, but it has been said and or rumored that beryl will be on by default.
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8THIS IS ALPHA for development testing... It's very early in development and no UI changes have been made yet, so don't complain that it "looks the same". Changes to the "look and feel" come after all of the underlying changes have been completed , which is still a ways off. When released, Feisty will support Beryl out of the box for those with compatible video cards (intel, nvidia & ATI) other than that you will get a plain unaccelerated desktop. Beryl will have also advanced greatly by the time Feisty is released, so there will be some very interesting UI changes.
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8The biggest difference is that this release will use udev. Your boot times will be super fast. Gentoo has udev goodness right now. It's nice!
- xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I use both avidly and I find your comments a bit harsh even if my preference is with OS X.
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7no, they go in alphabetical order
- Simon80, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6stmiller: udev has been in use for years in ubuntu and gentoo.. you probably mean udev is now handling what coldplug used to in gentoo...
- bob7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@bcardarella
Don't worry, you'll see major UI candy as Fiesty Fawn progresses. Have a look at Beryl. In a few more alpha releases, they should have it on by default. - knutert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sudoku will probably be a killer app aiding in migrating my girlfriend to Linux:)

AbiWord cannot be installed? Is he using a 286? - knutert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@DigitalDaiquiri:
You can contribute here: http://art.ubuntu.com - muep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If there will be some compositing on by default, I am sure they will make it so that it doesn't break the whole X server on older systems.
Support for accelerated graphics can be autodetected. - DigitalDaiquiri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3(Mind you that I have no prior experience working on OSS projects) I am a graphic artist (thats what I'm going to school for at least ^_^), and I'm more than willing to help with the artwork in the next version of Ubuntu (splash screens, themes etc). Does anyone know where I could get more information about how to contribute to the next build artistically?
- manitoba98xp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Naw, definitely "Gallant Giraffe"...maybe "Grumpy Groundhog"...
More at 11. - omarciddo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i can't get excited about this until something major changes, whether it be a revamped UI (beryl or kiba-dock by default) or something like being able to play most media files by default.
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Um, they are adding chess. Also sudoku.
- JohntB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'd be more worried about having a problem with my graphics drivers and not having a window manager when I start up my new installation, personally.
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use an ATI card and have had no trouble... I'm running Beryl/XGL with no problems as well a Flash 9 beta 2 works better than Flash 7 ever did.
If you are using Edgy, the fastest, easiest way to install ATI Drivers is with Automatix Bleeder. It's just a single click. Flash 9 can also be installed with Automatix with a single click. You need both Automatix and Automatix Bleeder from http://getautomatix.com/wiki/ - CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3In all honesty, I wish I was on Ubuntu right now. Unfortunately after mucking around for ages trying to get my ATI card to work and flash going properly in firefox, I gave up.
I found that the transition, despite what people claim, was not "easy" and was actually a pain in the ass.
Will there ever be a release with little things like this smoothed out? - stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Unfortunately, both of your problems (ATI and Flash) stem from poor Linux support from the companies that make those products, AMD and Adobe. Flash seems to be better with the release of Flash 9 (yay ALSA sound!), but I have no idea if ATI drivers will ever get their act together.
- BxBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2a new color scheme is in order.. but beryl/compiz support (right out of the box) would be a great addition..
- Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Geeze, Kubuntu looks about 1000x better than ubuntu in that. The brown has really got to go. That's why the first thing i did after I installed Ubuntu was to get the blubuntu packages, for an eye pleasing color scheme, instead of the brown crap. I suppose it's just preference, but really blue is so much more pleasing to the eye than brown (for me) and I know blue and green are calming colors wheras orange, red and yellow all are "hot" colors. So I dunno, I prefer the blues, maybe greens, I think Ubuntu should make it easy to have an entire alternate artwork set, cause the brown stinks.
- Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My vote was for gallant gorrilla. But I'm pretty sure grumpy groundhog is the winner at this point in time.
- bombadier337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seems a little early for an alpha... If you look in launchpad almost all the new features haven't even been started. The whole new "mac like" startup should be pretty interesting though.
- rossinio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The font kerning/aliasing still looks godawful, I know there are licensing issues etc but the default font is horrible to look at. Sadly Tahoma or Calibri are much cleaner, and hasn't anyone found anything to compare to cleartext or the mac anti aliasing system. I'm not the only person I know who's sick of sub pixel smoothing that adds horrible green and red hints to black text. The monochrome sub pixel stuff in ubuntu is also terrible.
Aaanyway, I think this should be made a bit of a priority as its the first thing you notice when it starts up.. - truck87bp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Q: Will there be any differences between 32 and 64 bit?
Q: Will they look the same or does 64 bit have a real sweet thing going for it?
If so, we would like to see some screen shots 64 bit v.s. 32 bit. Xp, Ubuntu user. - latour, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3i used Ubuntu for a few months, i spent more time fixing things and getting things just right then actually using the OS.
- givre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@stmiller
lol, i think you mean upstart, but it was already the case in edgy.
udev is use since... the beginning of 2.6 - Xenogis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"To another already existing theme perhaps but to change the colors of specific elements?"
You have a point, but it isn't very hard to just change the theme file. It would be nice if someone made Metacity better to support easy color changes. - antiNeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Most people will be fine with Beryl or Compiz on by default as long as there's a "safemode" in the boot menu.
- jakebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If there was a MacOnLinux for intel, I'd switch tonight. However, alas, there is not.
- MosaicM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1mmmmmmm, feisty fawn.
Oh wait.. this has nothing to do with furries. Awwwwwww - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What's the point of screenshots?
I bet these are the same screenshots from every other version. - eco2you, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Its so much better now its updtaed, but you cant beat windows for games :/http://www.eco2you.co.uk
- pinoyboy82, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I want to name the next release!! How about.... Galloping Gator! ;) I've been running Edgy with Beryl 0.1.3 and love it. I hope Feisty Fawn turns out well!
