It is very sad that you started out your argument solid enough with "faster", then left it with no proof. No benchmarks, no links... not even saying how much faster you think it is. You then went on to insult the fact that it's developers are paid.
I understand that squezing an extra 2 and one quarter percent more out of a system is important to many Linux users... however, I can't stand those who attack (in this case, almost ad hominem) other distro's simply because they try to be easy to use, or are compiled to work on the most hardware.
Here is a site that describes many of these Linux users: http://funroll-loops.org/ (Gentoo is for Ricers)
Don't take offence to it.
Unless of course it does describe you, then by all means, be upset. - Burgundavia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Flight 5 has been delayed slightly due to some last minute problems with the powerpc builds of espresso, the live cd installer.
It should also be noted that this is NOT the final release, rather one of many alphas.
Corey Burger
Ubuntu Documentation Team - Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12FFS. People like you give the rest of us Gentoo users a bad name.
I don't use Gentoo for speed, I use it for the flexibility and the occasional challenge. I don't know why people are downvoting deadlock because what he's saying is true. I also use it on proxy servers at work (4 of 'em) because it allows me to fine-tune package selection.
That being said, I do like Ubuntu and the way it's going - I'm just not a Gnome fan. However, my Mother uses Ubuntu on her PC and she's never had a problem with it. - deadlock, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Actually, I tend to use Gentoo for servers and so on. There's a huge amount of flexibility with it that allows you to install pretty much *only* what you need, rather than a canned set of packages that may or may not have dependencies that you don't really need. I've also found that - contrary to what that (admittedly funny) funroll-loops site would suggest - the Gentoo community is extremely helpful.
That said, I'm also a big fan of Ubuntu - it really is one of the best Linux distros out there and each release comes on in leaps and bounds. - jeff1943, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I love the new theme and icons. The shutdown splash looks good as well.
- Jessehk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8For many people, I think Ubuntu represents the most accessible route to Linux.
It offers the same file-tree, command-line, and programs as other distros, while at the same time including many graphical configuration programs, apt, and a very friendly forum.
I have tried other distributions (Tried(!) to install Gentoo, had FC4, tried SuSe, and I even looked at Slax), but none seemed to offer the polish of Ubuntu.
I think that is the reason it succeeds (that, and its large following, which continues to contribute to its success). - mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The human installer looks awesome.
- Illuminatus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Nice work Mr. Ubuntu! Going to apt-get dist-upgrade!
- version30.x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Here's a direct link to the new icons:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperUbuntuIcons
Unique and looking good...
digg - SpookyET, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
- krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5LOL Mr. Ubuntu
- pHr34kY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh, and I suspect this is the flight-5 build here, and they are yet to link it:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ - Gman1223, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I like the new Theme and Icons
- Robstah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5XGL and Compiz are pretty sweet, but there would really need to be an option for it during install. It won't be a full implementation until it works on 90%, if not more computers.
- cIprO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i just downloaded flight 4 a couple hrs. ago lol
o well have to upgrade again .. ;) - ztirffritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Ubuntu team has found a way for almost every level of user to contribute back to the project. If you're an digital artist they have a place for you. If you're in marketing, they have a place for you. If you like to teach people how to use Ubuntu, they have a place for you. It has got to be one of the most efficient examples of volunteer labor.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have an atheros chipset wireless, and to get it working simply go to system -> administration -> networking. Select Wireless Connection ath0 (or whatever name it has been given), click properties and enable it. Then just fill out the rest of the dialog, click OK and activate it if it has not been automatically. You can also right click on the network monitor and select ath0 in properties so that you can see when its in use.
- Tezkah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They do look like tango icons, and rightly so:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperUbuntuIcons
"This is a proof of concept "tangoification" of new ubuntu icon design, making those icons tango style require only little changes
In these icons, I slightly changed the color to comform better to the tango palette, added some perspective, made the stroke a tad lighter and added an inner light stroke (so the icons looks good on any background)."
Very nice icons. Digg++ - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You don't need to download Flight 5 - just start a terminal and type 'sudo apt-get update' and then 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade'. Restart and you'll be in Flight 5. The beauty of Debian ;).
- blackomegax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4madwifi is easily compiled into any distro.
- vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3those icons are great. I'm just not a fan of ubuntu's color scheme
- gookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The new GDEBI (graphical .deb installer?) is really promising!
- DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3XglHowto
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XglHowto - carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4is it too much to hope that a sooner rather than later edition of ubuntu will have a chouce for XGL?
- shade73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I for one am now in love with Ubuntu (and honestly I never thought I'd say that, leaning more torwards the fedora side of things). The major thing for me was the way that I can download pretty much any package and experience no timeouts, resets, file not founds, dependency issues etc. It's refreshing to be able to actually install what's in my add/remove programs without having to go, "Oh I hope this freaking works without telling me it couldn't download a dependency! [Fedora]" or "I hope i don't have conflicts I have to work out some magical way before i Install [SuSE]." They did an excellent job, and I'm very excited by their new release! Keep up the great work guys! Also the only distro where everything worked straight out of the box (Toshiba Satellite 5205-S705)
- Phoenyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The final release is scheduled for April 20th. I can't wait!
- macros, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually Xgl is in dapper, but not in main. So while not available as a default or officially supported it is easily installable from universe and works quite well.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I believe they are trying to get XGL in before dapper final
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Here is a site that describes many of these Linux users: http://funroll-loops.org/ (Gentoo is for Ricers)"
i always find it funny that funroll-loops is the only arguement against gentoo
but most gentoo users think the site is funny and true, and admit that most optimizations dont make a difference
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-181330-start-0-postdays-0-postorder-asc-highlight-.html
main reason people use gentoo...
-stable
-powerful
-can get everything out of your system... (the somewhat useless optimizations)
--whats wrong with optimizing your applications for your hardware, even though you probably wont notice it, its not hurting anyone, and it could slowdown/speedup compiling, the wrong flags can slow your computer down, make applications unstable etc...
-customize every aspect
-great community ( if you can follow http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html )
--somepeople can be asses as with everything
--somepeople 'go that extra mile' and even setup/fix your whole system through ssh if you wanted
-emerge is the best
now there are some good gui installers, i dont use them, but now the idiots who cant follow some guides can install it.
i have only been using linux for a few years now, i used solely ubuntu for a year, then a year of suse/fedora/ubuntu, now i have been using only gentoo for about a year and i love it
you cant really compare ubuntu with gentoo, they are made for different types of users for somewhat different purposes... as with most other distros
but dont rag on gentoo cause you probably dont use it, or couldnt figure ***** out when using it, or didnt use it very long
some gentoo users are idiots, most are not, saying gentoo is for ricers is really an insult...
same as saying ubuntu is for noobs to linux
while there is some validility in both claims, essentially untrue... - asmodeus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can anyone who tries installing this on AMD64 report back? I downloaded Flight 4 when it was released but it kept hanging in the installer whenever it got to xserver-xorg - something about obsolete command title being called when I switched to the terminal that shows the logging of the installer.
I found a bug about it here https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/32005 but it doesn't look like anything has been done on it. - carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i definitly agree there, no need to break the support of older hardware that works fine, but adding an option to bring it in will be ohh so nice
- kilps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I downloaded flight4, but will wait for the final release before re-downloading ...
What has stopped me from taking linux seriously is my inability to get any sort of wifi to work properly, but maby I will manage it next time ... :)
Otherwise this looks really cool, can't wait to try it out :D - randomc0de, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks for the info, I for one will wait for the final release. Still, I can hardly contain myself. It looks incredible, excellent, excellent job.
- cope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is my first comment ever on digg. but this looks cool. i hope theres ATI support. why did i buy ati? :(
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31)my wifi is my only source of internet, ya i know i suck.
2) compiling sucks ass, and doing away with the need for it would make linux rock. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ati has improved their drivers for Linux. I currently have a 9800 pro running nicely on Breezy. Hopefully ATI will continue to improve in the Linux realm. Nvidia is still the best choice when it comes to Linux though.
- totalgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am currently using the latest release of KUbuntu and was WOW'd by it when I first installed it. It gave me the ease of use of ADEPT and also the ability to run ./configure && make && make install for most of the stuff that wasn't available.
I got all excited to try the latest flight when I get to the download page and notice a link for the latest KUbuntu version and what happened? Nothing there is nothing at that link. I am so eager to try it I don't know why they would post a link thats not working. - bluemax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the brown is easy on the eyes, and it stands out from the typical blue+gray in most other OS interfaces.
- linnerd40, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, I must say, this is the best looking Ubuntu yet! The new theme and icons are excellent! It looks like a great improvement on an already great distro. Good work Ubuntu!
- Phrodo00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dapper has xgl support since like flight 3 or so lol
- allarise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2very sexy
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2true, but this is digg, where almost all posts are not news
- pHr34kY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2True to my prediction, this folder actually APPEARED a few hours after I posted this:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/dapper/flight-5/
I installed the overnight build and it wasn't quite flight-5 (the missing artwork was a giveaway). - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sexy yes, Ubuntu users are the sexiest geeks there are
- aa90digg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sexy!
- crackez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm using an Atheros PCMCIA adapter (Cheap SMC card) right now with WPA-PSK on Breezy at 54Mbps.
First, you need to have the linux-restricted-modules package installed for your kernel.
I also installed wpa_supplicant.
You want something like this in /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf:
network={
ssid="Your ESSID"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
proto=WPA
pairwise=TKIP
group=TKIP
psk="Your PreShared Key"
}
I also wrote a small script to bring up the interface, since it is not tied into the ubuntu networking framework. It is very simple:
#!/bin/sh
sysctl -w dev.ath0.ledpin=1
sysctl -w dev.ath0.softled=1
ifconfig ath0 up
### not sure if calling iwconfig is necessary, i got weirdness without it though.
iwconfig ath0 essid "Your ESSID"
wpa_supplicant -B -D madwifi -i ath0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
sleep 2
dhclient ath0
I just run it as root when I want to connect to my own network, and it works quite well... - Crazy_8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Atleast you only just downloaded it. :S
I downloaded and burned it like 2 days ago. :( - chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dharm
It was a joke.
I was poking fun at him for making fun of other distro's. I don't like Linspire. I really hate the idea of it having normal users run as power users, but that's me. I don't attack it or the people who use it. I think it has its flaws, but I don't resort to name-calling.
I personally don't like Ubuntu, because as efficient and everyone seems to love it... I can't stand Gnome. I like Kubuntu. Suse is nice, but I dislike RPM (compared to apt).
To answer your question (was it a question?). No I haven't used Gentoo. I don't pretend to have. After hearing so many good things (especially about emerge), I plan to give it a go in VMWare and see if it is for me.
I'm one of those who believe that linux distro's should NOT be consolidated to gain market share. I think there should be as many distro's as there are developers and enthusiast willing to build and maintain them. Innovation through diversification. Trail and error. The great stuff is kept, the rest dies a natural death. It is the perfect example of the evolution of Free software. Don't peg me as someone who doesn't "get" Free software, or its inherent nature to be as diverse as we are.
It was making fun of those (not necessarily this person though) that feel their distro needs to be superior to all others. That's what we call an inferiority complex. Unfortunately, I see it alot in my line of work. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Plus the brown is chocolateyyy mmmmmmm
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check the integrity of your ISO, maybe it got corrupted either in transit or on the CD
