- cstump, on 10/12/2007, -2/+52Not to worry? Are you kidding me? After 4 years of Red Hat and light Debian usage I tried Gentoo for a year. Emerge broke my system god knows how many times and updates were a total chore. I've been running Kubuntu for the past year. Much more pleasant experience. Emerge has little on apt-get. After 6 years of Linux usage I don't want to configure X for the zillionth time. I just want it to work. A real man's distro can do that.
- chapium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36Each has its nitch.
Gentoo isnt exactly aiming for userfriendliness and ubuntu isnt aiming for total package support. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28ya i dont think im gonna be able to justify running a 24 hour + build of my operating system to a boss
also when you run linux on 4-5 different computers regularly, you dont want to have to compile things for every damn one...
another thing is i want to use my computer to do work, and be productive. i DONT want to use my computer to spend a ton of time installing/setting up my operating system
gentoo is better for learning alot about linux maybe, but it isnt as easy to use - grepgrep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18It's not an update - it's a new version of the operating system. Not like say... updating Windows for a security fix, or installing a new version of mplayer.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Yeah, but ubuntu edgy includes new programs by default (like tomboy), and includes the newest versions of firefox, gaim, openoffice (and pretty much any non-default program like amorak or limewire. It also includes new artwork, a new version of gnome (with aiglx), nautilus.
These updates don't just update ubuntu, but most programs that you may have installed have a new version out.
Hence why the upgrade is large (250mb or so). - ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1410.4.7 to 10.4.8 was 34mb? They must not have included much, considering the iTunes 7.0 to 7.0.1 "update" was 35mb.
- dBLiSS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13The new release of Ubuntu 6.10 (code name Edgy Eft) is being released tomorrow. This article is to give people advice and tips on upgrading from the previous version(s).
- zephyrxero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13They are pretty lame (and yes, I am a user and a fan of Ubuntu myself).
You have heard the next one right.... "Feisty Fawn"... That's by far the worst one yet. I think "Ferocious Ferret" would have been much better :P - weprin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I'm not sure what this is. Can someone please fill in us non-Ubuntu users?
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Like grepgrep said, it's not just a run of the mill update of a few packages. It installed/updated something like 1500 packages when I did my upgrade. Upgrading GNOME alone is a considerable effort, not to mention the rest of the system.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It's about the same as upgrading to SP2, although things like a new boot system make it closer to upgrading to Vista. There are things you have to do in both of those cases if you want to be sure of a clean upgrade (ie. uninstall most drivers, antivirus etc). Furthermore, in the vast majority of cases you can just use the update manager to upgrade distro version.
- Tweekster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10yeah gentoo is a real mans distro...
you are such a manly man.
moms calling you for dinner - Brackhar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8As still a nubby linux user, could someone let me know why this is different then just upgrading your individual packages through the Synaptic package manager as new versions come out? What's the motivation?
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I already updated to Edgy last week. There were a few snags, but it went pretty smooth, overall.
Snags:
* I had removed the ubuntu-desktop meta-package. This is required. Just reinstall it before upgrdaing.
* I had installed some 3rd party apps which wouldn't work with Edgy (gnome-terminal-launcher applet). Had to remove that.
* After a couple hours of package downloads, I left it to do the installs overnight. Be aware that if you've modified anything in /etc, you will probably be asked at some point if you want to replace your modified file(s) with the defaults. The install waits for you to answer, so don't depend on being able to leave it for several hours and come back and have it done.
All in all, I was pretty impressed with how well it went. just did sudo update-manager -c -d several times, resolved the package issues it told me about, and it took care of the rest. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10how many times this guy post the same message already here is the procedure
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Ubuntu_Howto_upgrade_from_6_06_dapper_to_6_10_Edgy - chapium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Shoot, I forgot that. It will get security updates AND remain supported by Canonical.
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I just installed Edgy on one of my computers with an ati 9600xt, set up XGL, fglrx and Beryl, and it runs beautifully (~250fps). I don't know about upgrading, but a fresh install works beautifully.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+71. The reason it's a whole CD worth of updates is EVERYTHING gets updated, including many non standard programs. If I were to upgrade MS Office, Photoshop, Illustrator, Parralels and all my other OS X apps, it would take up a similar amount of space.
2. Upgrading from Dapper to Service Release one - a minor release - was only 20mb for me (since I use a custom kernel, but then the OS X kernel wasn't updated from 4.7 to 4.8). That's more comparable to your minor version upgrade.
XP, on the other hand, makes use of binary patches to make updates significantly faster to download, if slightly slower to install. - arsgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Hey folks,
ArsGeek, which is graciously hosted on a donated server with donated bandwith is currently bringing that server (which hosts other stuff as well) to it's knees.
Until I get a better (read: paid) service to host ArsGeek, periodic diggs will bring the site down.
Hopefully I'll be able to do this in the next 3 months or so.
Thanks for reading the site! - iseebluuue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6jonny, you forgot luscious llama, droppin' june 2026
i've only been using linux for a couple of months, and i jumped on the ubuntu bandwagon, so i haven't tried that many other distributions. but ubuntu worked great out of the box and i find the community to be very helpful and VERY active.
there may be some envy of ubuntu because it shot up so fast, but it didn't do so by sheer luck. it's easy to use for linux newbs (such as myself) and it works great - BionicBeefpile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually I upgraded to Edgy last week, and Beryl runs better now than it did before, as Aiglx is built in
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I would NOT suggest doing this, especially if you use xgl/compiz or beryl. The fglrx drivers are very screwed up in edgy, and it take a bit of work (turning off composition etc) to get them working right.
All I can say is that I reinstalled ubuntu completely, and therefore avoided all those ugly upgrade problems. This is my suggestion. - gookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Ubuntu's ISO's can be written into a writable DVD as well...
- grepgrep, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7He's also got some good tips about what to do *before* you upgrade to make sure things go well.
- arsgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Reinstalling completely is definately an option. There's always something to be said for a clean install (nothing mucked up by ME for instance). However lots of folks who are not linux admins, but linux users may simply want to upgrade and enjoy the new benefits.
- iseebluuue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5p.s. - another great thing ubuntu has done is to turn ordinary people to linux. that can't be a bad thing.
- robwistar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@hobnob: click on his link before mouthing off.
edit: or her link! - chapium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This generally requires switching repositories. The dapper repository will still be in tact for several years, receiving only security updates.
- traherom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Just updating through synaptic gets (primarially) security fixes of things for the release you're running. Occasionally new things will get included, but not as much and nothing major.
The upgrade, on the other hand, changes many _major_ components, such as the X server (the thing which creates the base graphical stuff), Gnome (which is what you're sitting in after you log in), the initialization process (which starts everything else when you're booting), etc.
EDIT: Oh, and @chapium: Dapper will be fully supported for 5 years at least. In fact, that's the only version you'll be able to get from ShipIt. - frouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ubuntu 26.06 will probably be totally unrecognisable if we saw it now.
- MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Will this uninstall the fglrx drivers and extra fonts?
- illegal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i upgraded my desktop yesterday. I will wait fro tomorrow to upgrade my laptop. I've been with Ubuntu for a month now. You can call me grown up on Windows. But I really enjoy Ubuntu after Windows 3.11, 95, Me, 2000, Xp and Vista SR1. yeah, I tried Fedora Core for a week or so, didn't like that support as Ubuntu's forum offers. I did't like Edgy so much personally, cause they put a lot of extra sh*t in it. And they are also trying to make it visually look like Vista. But gotta keep up with the time. I recommend Ubuntu.
- kavaliro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I like Ubuntu. I just wish that stupid font issue with gtk1.2 programs were fixed. It's been broken for two releases now. At various times, one hack or another has "fixed" the problem, but it seems people have varying results with them. I'd think it would be a hot item-- it degrades the whole user experience.
- Applemacmad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Also, Open Source OSes seem to move at a much faster pace than your usual XP or Mac.
Hence the reason for often big updates - but don't worry, at this rate, within 3 years, it will be the no. 1 OS or fading into obscurity! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4what tips is there i can see only backup your system will cover everything

Click on the link above yours. Watch what happens.
@everyone else
There's no reason to whine just because someone DOES post the full link - it really doesn't break the Internets or anything.
EDIT - I see others agree :-) - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6socket: arrogant asses like yourself ruin gentoo's reputation, please stop the retarded penis waving! oooh you prefer gentoo, you must be 1337.
gentoo is a fantastic server distro. but like cstump said who wants to configure X by hand on a desktop?! I don't care whether I have ksyslog or syslog-ng on my desktop, or which cron daemon I'm using. I don't care about USE flags on a desktop machine either.
Andrew Gaffney wrote a tool for automated system installations and it looks great. he's just released the second version but i have some plans for it already (cloning of a machine for automating the setup of test or backup systems).
Smart people work on gentoo (like Greg Kroah-Hartman) and they have lots of interesting projects such as gentoo/mac os and gentoo/freebsd. portage really is a great system. i'm glad there's a gentoo. - spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4you will get an option in dapper asking you if you want to update to edgy. if you do, it will be just the same as installing from the CD, except you keep your programs + files.
- lilrabbit129, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'd have to agree with you on that, the fedora forums don't have as much activity as the Ubuntu forums. But quite a bit of the adivce given in the ubuntu forums are relavent to fedora as well.
- snoopy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Did you even follow the link? You don't even have to post the entire URL anymore.
- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you should've specified that the fglrx drivers are ATI only, for those who don't know. i'd assume the NVidia drivers are fine. Automatix2 is supposed to install xgl and nvidia drivers in a script.
- TheSeeker11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think Ubuntu is great for a beginner and I enjoyed running it for a month or so. Because I'd used Linux before however, I felt as if I was having my hand held so I switched to what I think to be the best Debian-based distro - Kanotix. http://kanotix.com/index.html
- nailer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Edgy isn't out yet, and when people click on your links they currently only see an option to download the release candidate (final beta).
Dugg down accordingly. - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Boot from any Linux LiveCD, e.g. a working Dapper, or something like Tom's RootNBoot.
sudo grub
> root (hd0,4)
> setup (hd0)
> quit
If you don't know which partition your Ubuntu root is on, press TAB at root (hd0, and it will give a list of partitions and their format. The root will likely be the first ext3 or reiserfs.
I do this every time I reinstall Windows. Surprising how many times I've had to do it. ;) This will of course work for any Linux distro. - kewldude606, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This is like going from 10.3 to 10.4, not 10.3.10 to 10.3.11...
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Looks like Digg users don't like rugby. What a shame.
P.S. Wild Turkey is bourbon, but we can go with beer as well. - spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3feisty fawn? are you serious?
- jtorque, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10@RandallBe
So it's a crap distribution because of "most" of the users are rude and have no respect? Your limited experiences surely speak for the majority of users out there and certainly speak for the operating system. Pretentious prick. - dBLiSS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4bahhh.. I just did a reinstall of Xubuntu LAST NIGHT.. argh...
