- BalancingAct, on 05/06/2009, -1/+48Bye SCO. You will not be missed. Let others learn from your stupidity.
- lobothemainman, on 05/06/2009, -0/+26Karma. Enough said.
- inactive, on 05/06/2009, -0/+23Chapter 11 is bankruptcy and restructuring: The company continues to do business.
Chapter 7 is bankruptcy and liquidation: The company closes shop, sells its assets, and ceases to exist. - threepio, on 05/06/2009, -0/+21Well, it's been a fun ride - and it's been a great opportunity to introduce folks to the word schadenfreude.
- TheZorch, on 05/06/2009, -3/+18This is the result of SCO being used by Microsoft to fight a proxy war against Linux, nothing more nothing less. Before they went on they're whole "Linux stole our IP" rant, which has never been proven not once, they were doing ok. It was when they became Redmond, WA's attack dog did things go downhill fast. Besides, the IP of Unix they claimed to own was actually owned by Novell, oopsyIII
- rmxz, on 05/06/2009, -0/+14Sadly, the main lesson learned from this is that it was the best $86 million[1] Microsoft ever spent. Kept a legal cloud over Linux for over half a decade. Cost Novell and IBM tons of money in the lawsuit; and the financial backers of this whole SCO attack don't need to pay a dime, and they (SCO's compensation committee) paid Darl mostly in cash rather than stock, so execs came out well too. I feel a bit sorry for the rank-and-file-SCO workers - but overall, this whole case was a huge win for Microsoft and little more than pain for Linux.

YEAH, you know, that kind, lovely, big-hearted company that made that XBox you love playing on, and that shiny new Windows 7 RC1 you just downloaded.
Not to mention the same company that made the hugely successful Vista, and the indescribably brilliant Windows Mobile.
YEAH, that company.
I just thought I'd kind of mention it a little for those of you that like to try and keep these things separate in your minds.
Oh, and did I mention that Microsoft are a multiple-times convicted illegal monopolist in both the US and EU, and have been hit with the EU's largest ever fine for market abuse? Sorry, almost slipped my mind! - TheZorch, on 05/06/2009, -3/+17A once big company that was run into the ground by Microsoft who used them to fight a proxy war against Linux rather than competing like they were supposed to be doing. Of course their plans failed miserably.
- RealmDown, on 05/06/2009, -2/+15And let us know if you need any kicking while you are down. We'll be happy to oblige.
- digggggggggg, on 05/06/2009, -0/+12Well, as part of one of the rulings, it turned out that the rights to SVR4 UNIX belonged to Novell.
Other than that, SCO UnixWare is absolutely worthless. It's more costly to use than any other form of *NIX out there, and has very poor support of architectures and hardware. Its software compatibility is not one of its strong points either.
http://www.osnews.com/story/5416&page=1 - digggggggggg, on 05/06/2009, -0/+11This should have been done 4 years ago. I seriously can't believe it's taken this long for an otherwise worthless company to go away.
- SQLserver, on 05/06/2009, -0/+10The unfortunate thing is SCO is just the pinky finger on Microsoft's hand. They almost effectively kept a competitor at bay for years just by throwing a few million dollars at a pawn company.
And it won't just come from Microsoft. We're going to see a lot more totally insane software trademark/patent battles in the future. - worldorder, on 05/06/2009, -0/+10Finally!!
- ThatsNotPudding, on 05/06/2009, -1/+10"Your honor, I would also recommend driving a wooden stake through the tiny, craven heart of Darl McBride."
- Beautyon, on 05/06/2009, -0/+9Good riddance to bad rubbish.
- nullcodes, on 05/06/2009, -0/+8Is Darl being sued?
- NathanielJ, on 05/06/2009, -0/+8http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCO_Group
- falafelkiosken, on 05/06/2009, -0/+8I'll just go and get the champagne...
- bemenaker, on 05/06/2009, -1/+9MS didn't run them into the ground. They ran themselves into the ground, refused to change and adopt to the world around them. And died.
- ryan69969, on 05/06/2009, -0/+7Shenanigans aside...at the end of the day, does SCO actually own some valuable IP? If so, will be curious what happens to it.
- Venkatsubramane, on 05/06/2009, -0/+6How can SCO possibly go out of business?!?! I mean, they did invent, write and license the Linux operating system, right?
Oh wait, um... never mind. - vaguilera, on 05/06/2009, -0/+6what is the diff from chapter 11 to 7?
- TheFounder, on 05/06/2009, -0/+5I want to buy their patents in bankruptcy court.. I heard it's worth tons of money... oh .. wait....
- mbelrose, on 05/06/2009, -0/+5If there were really karma, Darl McBride would be sodomized with a dildo shaped like Steve Ballmer.
- bemenaker, on 05/06/2009, -1/+5In 11 you get to reorganize and find a way to become profitable. When you fail at that, you go 7, which is your creditors sell off everything and close the doors.
- mooninite, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4bemenaker, follow the SCO lawyer money trail. It leads back to Microsoft. SCO was actually adopting a bunch of FOSS projects before MS butted into their affairs.
- jsmithers, on 05/06/2009, -1/+5The world will say the same when Micro$$$oft bite the dust, because it is they who were behind SCO.
- Atomic1fire, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3Its from a 60s song,
and it was in that one movie disney made with Jerry Bruckheimer, no not the one with the pirates
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remember_the_Titans - nullcodes, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3Sure they didn't own IP on Linux, but can't they find someone to sue with their vast patent portfolio on stupidity? Now those patents are being violated all ver the place.
- UselessTrivia, on 05/06/2009, -1/+4They are a company that exists for no other reason than to purchase patents and then sue people for violating them.
- mbelrose, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2(in my best Dalek voice)
LIQUIDATE!!! LIQUIDATE!!!! - sirclown82, on 05/07/2009, -0/+2Would you just hurry up and freaken die SCO?
- ratrip, on 05/07/2009, -0/+2*** Sadly, the main lesson learned from this is that it was the best $86 million Microsoft ever spent. ***
Well, after all said and done, Linux got out stronger. It has validated Linux as an unencumbered technology copyright wise. It has even improved the way patches are documented (sign off). All the Sabre rattling has probably spurred initiatives like OIN. It also was the cause for Groklaw to be formed.
On the whole, I think Linux has won more than MS benefited from it. - DOCNM, on 05/06/2009, -2/+4four
- AnotherBrian, on 05/06/2009, -1/+3Everybody!
[♫] Na na na na, na na na na,
Hay hay hay, Goodbye! [/♫] - xedd, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1Well, he's a bitch too.
- eleete, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1We'll wait here.
- webmasterjoe, on 05/06/2009, -2/+3Seriously? You choose to answer a question (you didn't have to reply) by telling someone to look it up, in the most patronizing (yet unoriginal and overused) way possible?
http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=TruckStuff+is+a+douchebag - xedd, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1As in "free champagne"?
- inactive, on 05/06/2009, -1/+2"When your enemy is racing toward a cliff, do not stand in their way." Microsoft was doing the world a favor by greasing SCOs wheels, see where it went?
- eleete, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1lest we not forget his brother Kevin.
- rpelayo, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1Good bye to bad rubbish !
- Atomic1fire, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1A company that tried to make money with court cases,
and lost - eleete, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1As we already have in the past. Patents and Software, sorta like oil and water.
- ryan69969, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1Well then. Could be one reason why they're facing Chapter 7 rather than 11.
- woranl, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1Good for you SCO! Your stupidity serves you just right.
This is the outcome of having a dumbass for CEO.
A lesson learned for everyone!! - tj_walker, on 05/07/2009, -0/+1Once upon a time, they had a great product. I was always happy to replace XENIX with SCO.
They fumbled a bit toward the end. They will live on in history though. All shall remember and mutter the words "Ahhh, SCO. I remember them." and that's all she wrote.
= : )K - donalb, on 05/09/2009, -0/+1I've got a SCO shirt. You know when you go to a tradeshow and certain geeks are wearing "cool" shirts? Nothing any of them wear is as offensive as that SCO shirt! I wear it for the laugh.
And I knew a guy worked for them. He was a hard-working helpful great sales engineer. All the haters always forget the ordinary guys. Maybe after you lose a job through no fault of your own, you might develop some empathy with other people. - timlaytonsr, on 05/20/2009, -0/+0Windows mobile is a top-notch mobile operating system that is here to stay. Others will come and go, but I have been around long enough to know fads from real innovation and technology. If you have ever tried to develop a google android app as compared to a windows mobile app in visual studio and the windows mobile professional SDK it makes the android sdk seem silly. Windows mobile has a huge advantage and a sea of developers. Feel free to quote me on this...
