- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -97/+182OMFG A COMPUTER RUNNING LINUX? QUICK DIGG IT!!!!!11
OH ***** GUYS, I HEAR THERES A TOASTER RUNNING LINUX TOO - DIGG IT UP QUICK!
OMFG *ORGASM* - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+81haha, tux looks totally out of place
- AngryBoy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+56This title's a bit misleading... the Army didn't really choose Linux, the combat developer, Raytheon did. Raytheon is then selling it to the Army. I'm surprised they broke away from vxWorks.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -13/+61i run photoshop cs 2 on my ubuntu :)
there is nothing i cant do with linux, i can even frigging have windows loading in a seperate window - Dumbledorito, on 10/11/2007, -20/+58Linux is great for custom purposes where you need the same things done over and over.
But these suits will never run Photoshop. :) - sundancekid503, on 10/11/2007, -3/+40Good luck finding drivers for the latest assault rifles
- Darcy, on 10/11/2007, -7/+42No, kernel panics are much more preferable.
- lazyguy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+37Tux needs a gun :(
What if the terrorists start shooting the poor penguins :'( - estvir, on 10/11/2007, -19/+522002 called, they want their petty joke back.
- daridave, on 10/11/2007, -4/+30well, duh. you really want a blue screen when you're in enemy territory?
and I don't get why you guys bash the optimisim of linux fans. Hey, it's a free OS, it works, it's powerful. There's no reason not to be happy about this. It needs all the pub it can get, and this is one of those where it owns.
But really, they wanted to use Windows, but they were scared their machine wouldn't be genuine anymore in 6 months. - turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30This is funny because the Air Force refuses to use linux because it is open source and they claim that makes it more vulnerable to attack. They are currently upgrading the B2 bombers internal computer systems to XP, which I will admit is better than the flashy buttons they had been using from the 80's.
I think they should have used linux for all of it from the beginning though. - MadOgre, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22Too bad Land Warrior sucks... that's all the Infantry needs... a bunch of added weight.
I was 8 years in the Light Infantry. Every ounce was measured... we didn't even take our sleeping bags with us unless it was dead of winter and even then sometimes we wouldn't. Poncho Liners are much lighter. Now add all that weight to everything including the weapon? The M-16 was designed as a light weight rifle, and now you add all this crap on it?
Might as well pack an M-14 and have some firepower.
If you want the Army to have some high tech crap like this... give each grunt a modified Garmin Rhino GPS unit that allows the soldier to indicate approximate enemy location with a stylus... have that info linked to the other Rhinos in the area... done. We don't need gun cameras.
China already has a fielded version of Land Warrior, and even they don't like it. - mickstephenson, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20You guys do realise that since Windows 2000, by default all Windows computers reboot at BSOD so you never get a chance to see it. So infact what we are talking about is random unexpected reboots, you may not have seen a BSOD since 1998, but i'd find it hard to believe if you've never had an unexpected reboot.
- esotericguy, on 10/11/2007, -14/+32i've had my comp for 2+ years and i've never seen the BSOD.
and it gets heavy use - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19http://blog.publicidadpixelada.com/how-to-adobe-photoshop-cs2-on-ubuntu-10-steps/

- brundlefly76, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Wow good for the military for cost cutting - only $500 for a Bio Land Warrior System!
- MioTheGreat, on 10/11/2007, -8/+22Installed XP or Vista? Neither BSOD unless you've got a really ***** driver somewhere (Less-so with Vista, because more drivers run outside the kernel) or bad hardware.
- LeeJunFan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Well, yeah if it were windows:
1) you'd have to tell it to show hidden enemies
2) stupid little bubbles would pop up in your reticle to tell you a new enemy has been detected and it would cover the enemy until you okay'd it.
3) it would tell you you are about to perform a deadly operation [when you pull the trigger] and ask if that's really what you want to do
4) when you tell it you DO want to discharge your firearm it would ask you if you want to switch to administrator mode to do so
5) it would blank your screen when it does and you'd miss the fact that there's an APC coming right behind the guy and you'd fire and give your position away to a superior enemy force. - xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13yes
- coryjb, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13They canceled the Land Warrior project in February 2007.

- kidjay, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12so what is the $500 bio comment?
the article says 500 million they've spent....and what the ***** is $500 bio? - localzuk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12And most IT people find people working in Banking to be overpaid idiots also...
Just because you think they are hacks doesn't mean they are. Everyone has their own area of expertise. - cliffzdude, on 10/11/2007, -14/+25Unlike 99% of those who make any joke regarding any OS, I use and work on both Linux ~and~ Windows boxen at work and at home. I work in IT for a living, I butter my bread and feed my family via IT. My experience with both operating systems is from thousands of hours working on and with both, and in experience windows does not crash any more or less than a linux distro. Linux boxes and apps run on linux boxes crash, if you don't think that's a fact then you don't work in IT for a living, or you are being disingenuous.
That said the BDOS joke is old, hackneyed, and just plain inaccurate. Really, if you want to pick on any modern OS the idea of it being more or less stable is quite out of place. - specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I find that ***** hard to swallow. Anyone who think that XP is safer than Linux because XP is closed source is complete idiot. For all they care they'd be better with Mac OS, but they want don't want to spend their money on ridicule overpriced hardware.
- rkef, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12@Monolith3: does the toaster come with an eyepiece GUI, night vision, rangefinder, GPS/mapping, 2-way radio, video capture, text messaging, etc.? Then yes, tell me about the toaster... mmmm....

Core Dumped - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -16/+26I've never BSOD'd since Windows 98.
- localzuk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12bnolsen - you have no idea what you are talking about. You can get a fully working linux os on an old double density flopy disk...
Yes, a fully featured, office/home intended distribution will have lots of extras, but you can remove them or better still, not add them in the first place. - baalzebub, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11bnolsen, you have no clue about what you are talking about, i seen a complete Linux distro fit on two floppy diskettes, on PDAs, Cell phones, heck even one company installed Linux in to a wristwatch. and on the other end of the spectrum, IBM's "Blue Gene L" super computer runs Linux and it is among the worlds most powerful computers...
- gmerin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11does this mean Microsoft will sue the military for patent infringement?
- Piggycow, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Well they probably want something lightweight and Widows and Mac certainly aren't that

Knowledge is power...Lack of Knowledge just makes you look foolish when you speak. - punkyetti, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12Wow I don't know where you get your info but I know that the Air Force's cyber warfare guys all use linux. they only use their windows machines for outlook. I have seen this personally.
- rarson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8@Monolith:
Are you kidding me? Do you have ANY IDEA how much money the government wastes on proprietary technology and software licenses by supporting crap like Windows within the Defense Department? Licensing costs alone are reason for me to be happy about the military using technology that includes open-source software. I saw a ton of money being wasted while I was in the military, so anything that can cut back on the wasteful spending is great, IMO (as long as there are no detrimental effects, of course). - mymate, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9nice distro
- boituma, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Yes, embedded systems designers have been adopting Linux at a pretty good clip, mainly because of its code base and modularity. I'm surprised that Raytheon did this for a DoD project though, as the defense industries are the last redoubt of integrated, custom hardware/software. I've always felt Linux was an odd fit for a real time OS, though, since the kernel was not originally designed for real time scheduling.
/Preparing to be corrected... - init100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7You think so, but do you have even the slightest piece of evidence? I'd say you just pulled that out of your arse.
- bnolsen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Agreed, what happened to the concept of a "radio man"?
Keep the normal guys as mobile as possible and keep down the number of "unlucky bastards" who have to haul a bunch of crap around.
This gear might be useful if one or two folks per squad platoon were hooked up, but not everyone. - DickBreath, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11@arbulus
You are suggesting that Popular Mechanics would fake this picture? Any motive on the magazine's part?
@Monolith3
This story is interesting to some people. Why complain about it? If you don't have an interest in the story, why even bother to look at the comments for it? I skip over stories I am uninterested in all the time.
One reason stories like this get posted is because of the anti-Linux fanbois. Yes there IS a cult religion both pro and anti Linux. Though they would never admit it, the anti-Linux fanbois are every bit as passionate and zealous fanatics as the pro-Linux fanbois they accuse of the same. Pot meet kettle. I'm not suggesting that YOU are a fanboi on either side. But you did ask the question.
Another reason stories like this get posted is simply because they are interesting to enough people to get promoted to the front page. Imagine that. Something not otherwise revealed, but which you can deduce by looking at an unintentional artifact in a screenshot. Many people would find that merely interesting, even if they feel neutral about Linux. - mvander115, on 10/11/2007, -13/+20Stop pages happen just a frequently on Linux as it does on Windows. I cannot tell you how often I have had to troubleshoot a PSOD on linux.
- GawtMilk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7@razrielle
He's obviously talking about Top Gun. Damn that Iceman. DAMN HIM TO HELL! - radix76v2, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Land Warrior with M$ Windows:
- when planning a mission: 'It seems that yo`re planning an moving ambush - can i help?'
- when trying to switch to nigth vision: 'You need a M$-WW-PRO license for this feature. do you want to buy one online now?
- when connecting a dragunov to the system: 'unknown hardware found, rebooting'
- when firing with a clip provided by your mate (you went dry, couse of some 'minor' bug with the ammo counter): 'the rounds you`re going to fire are not M$-WW-PRO certified. Firing them might result in unexpected behaviour of the system and/or the enemy. Continue? (Y/N)
- when switching from assault rifle to smg for MOUT: 'Unexpected unplugging of hardware detected. Please replug the previous gun, choose 'switch weapon' form the main menu, unplug it, an replug the new gun.'
- when connecting a HK-M21: 'The helpfiles for this weapon are only aviable as automatic translations.'
- when trying to use the gl: 'to fire the gl, you need to upgrade to M$-WW-PRO'.
- when checking the remaining power: 'You have 4 hours of continued use aviable'. Ten seconds later it shuts down.
- when checking the map 'You want to check the map? You need to punch the moneky at least three times!'
- when grapping the old AK47 as a last result after all you other guns failed: 'uncertified weapon recognized. Shuting down.'
:) - SlvrEagle23, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11Monolith has a good point...this is nice to hear about but in the grand scheme of things isn't a big deal.
While seeing a group choose Linux for a specialized application is great, the goal of the community is to have an OS that doesn't seem like its only good use is for a specialized application. We shouldn't be too surprised to see the rise of Linux in embedded technologies, as it makes a lot of sense there for stability and efficiency.
So yes, this story is a nice way for all of us to say, "Yeah, that's right, Linux is cool" and count this as a success of Linux in general, but this has little impact on the idea of bringing Linux to the overall community at large. - baalzebub, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8yup, that is where Linux really shines, anyone can do a bare bones install of Linux & the GNU tools (with or without the X-window-System) and build it up to what ever they want & need it to do...
- reed311, on 10/11/2007, -8/+14Umm... so what? Do you guys get a royalty every time Linux is used or something?
- sid0, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11" In Windows you get BSODs through no fault of your own"
No no hell no. 99% caused due to a hardware problem or an unstable driver. -
