- tnoy, on 01/07/2009, -0/+15YouTube was burning through cash before Google bought them out.
They were popular, but FAR from profitable. - JoelJ, on 01/06/2009, -1/+16It's like buying a multi-million dollar company is as easy as walking into the local Wal-Mart and helping yourself at the self-check out stand.
- Kingoftherings, on 01/06/2009, -3/+16Buried. Red Hat wouldn't sell themselves, they're doing great financially. You only ever see struggling companies get bought out anyway.
- ch4os1337, on 01/07/2009, -0/+8Its the same exact headline too...
That sucks bro. - inactive, on 01/07/2009, -1/+7Would be a sad day!
- ifruit, on 01/07/2009, -1/+6Actually, it went downhill longer ago, and it's been going uphill recently. The dell XPS stuff is quite nice, and dell PowerEdge servers are kickass.
- regeya, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4I'm currently using Fedora Core 10, and though I'm seriously considering going back to a Deb-based system, nearly all the old complaints are gone. They seem to be putting a lot more effort into making upgradeable, consistent packages, and yum is definitely competition for apt these days. Now, if I can figure out how to install DVD Styler on this system, and if RPM had an equivalent to dpkg-divert (if it does, I apologize for missing it in the manpage), I wouldn't even consider going back to Ubuntu.
- dagr8tim, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4As ifruit said, the XPS systems are very nice. I own one, and the support staff bends over backwards for me.
But like everything else in the world, you get what you pay for. If you spend $300 on a desktop/laptop. Don't expect it to be the latest & the greatest.
Article buried as basically blogspam. - josepablos, on 01/06/2009, -4/+8corporate linux .. sad sad
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Why do hardware and software companies need to be bundled together? It's not always going to solve the problem. Plus I don't want any corporation screwing around with the Fedora Project.
- hazello, on 01/07/2009, -1/+4Ah, no. Please!
- kiddcode, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3I'm a developer and we use RHEL on our corporate project. What's sad about it? Are you upset that people are being productive with it?
- jerrycan, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3I think they would do better if they did something like officially adopting Ubuntu and extending it (via GNU'd software they contribute).
- JamesBondJr, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4even worse if Dell takes the path they've been taking with hardware recently. the quality of service has been going downhill the last few years.
- Avian00, on 01/07/2009, -1/+4Why should Dell buy RedHat when they've already established momentum with Ubuntu? Then again, why should Dell buy any Linux company when the OS is entirely available Open Source for them to modify as they wish?
- IphtashuFitz, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Buried this one as a dupe and dugg the original.
- fulibs, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2I work for 14 colleges, and all we buy is HP. Why don't we buy DELL? Because their quality and support have been questionable over the years. If your definition of too good is DELL, you should look into raising your standards.
- MattBD, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Maybe Sun is a better fit for Dell. There's been a lot of talk about how Sun are on their way out, and that would be tragic if they went under. They've been a pretty good citizen of the FOSS community, not perfect, but better than most, and we would lose out if anything happened to them.
Not advocating here, mind, just speculating. - BashiBazouk, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2You mean they're too cheap.
I've used/supported dells at various jobs. I would not equate dell with good. Especially the budget models that most organizations buy. - mozert, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2No No, the Linux people are getting screw up in any such deal. Red Hat should stand alone.
- bewmIES, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2What do you think Red Hat is now? If a public company, answering to shareholders, is not "corporate" then what is?
If being acquired by Dell is the best thing for the company, then that is what will happen. This is how business works. - CoD4, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2dell should buy a hard hat instead
- IphtashuFitz, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Red Hat is a publicly traded company (NYSE:RHT). If Dell wanted to purchase Red Hat it could do a number of things, with or without the consent of Red Hat. If Dell (or any other company) was really interested in acquiring them they could simply start buying up RHT stock. If they could obtain 51% of the stock they would effectively own the company. Even if they don't manage that, they'd still be a shareholder and fully entitled to all shareholder rights. As a shareholder they could work with other shareholders to vote new members onto the Red Hat board of directors, and use those new members to push for an acquisition. It's what was recently attempted with Yahoo. It's not easy, and can be costly, but the bottom line is that there are plenty of options like this for a company that is determined to acquire another company, whether through these sorts of hostile means or through more friendly means.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1@rat - They pulled themselves out with the help of Jobs coming back and a bailout from Microsoft of all people. Now I don't care one way or the other about Dell or Apple (being a Linux user who will run it on whatever the cheapest computer I can get is), but keep the facts in mind.
- df12, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1In the business world having the hardware and software come from the same vendor reduces complexity. And perhaps more importantly, it reduces finger pointing. In the case of Linux, having a company like Dell ultimately backing up the RedHat brand would give overly cautious luddite CIOs a greater feeling that Linux is indeed ready for prime time and safe for their business.
- nkassi, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1Yahoo should buy Sun
- Stuffburger, on 01/07/2009, -0/+11) Money
2) Money - dreadlocks, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1Agreed, I worked for Jabber.. after making record profits last year I now work for Cisco... profitable companies are well sought after..
The only reason you go after a failing company is for a hostile takeover of there property & product lines.. Or just to buy out a competitor so you can squash competition.. - nkassi, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1It all depends on the price. If Dell makes a decent offer why would Rhat not take it. Good company with good cash flow are usually very prone to take over bids since the larger companies want cash cows.
- kronzdigg, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1No, they should ride MS to the bottom. Dell computers used to be great but now the pre-load them with so much crap software that it takes hours to make them usable (cleaned up) out of the box. That sucks. I now only buy their servers. Otherwise apple.
- mmcgrath, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1for sale or not, they're a public company, they can be purchased.
- yurimxpxman, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1My first distribution (not counting Hoary Hedgehog) was Fedora Core 2. I used to love it, honestly.. until I started digging deeper into stuff. Once I started actually downloading packages I couldn't get from the repository, I got so frustrated with the dependencies that I actually switched back to Windows for a short while. I've been using Kubuntu for about three years now, I think.
- Drakk0n, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1well it seems to have worked kinda well for the little company called Apple...
- mississippiman, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1Google should buy The Sun.
- T8erT0T, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1 Dell can start pumping out a distro of its own right now if it really wanted to so I don't see the point of buying RHEL outright.
Personally, I see a better deal if it tried to go for Sun. - ratsg, on 01/07/2009, -2/+2I'm a Unix user, and don't care one way or another about either one.
From a financial perspective though, you don't have to be the amazing Kreskin to see that dell's stock peaked at 40+ in 2005 and has been going downhill ever since. Apple, OTOH, pulled themselves out of the gutter around the time of the dot com fall out, and has been making money like crazy since that time.
Do you have all of your money in Dell stock, or does your sister work for dell? - GeorgeStone2, on 01/07/2009, -1/+1I work at a few schools all we buy are dells.
Dell wont go under. They're too good. - clemyeats, on 01/07/2009, -0/+0I don't think RedHat is for sale. They showed it clearly by the past, they're not just here for the money.
- GeorgeStone2, on 01/07/2009, -1/+1Their quality may be down, but when you can get a 3ghz C2D with 2GB of ram and in ultra compact form for £400 with a 3 year warranty you can't complain.
Schools work on tiny budgets, and Dell fits really well.
We don't have many fail, and if we do then they sort it out.
Last time we had a problem a dell tech was on site the next day. Replaced the mobo and no more problems.
Sometimes they just send us out the parts and let us do it, which is ideal.
Basically, I like dell and their warranties. - ederbaum, on 01/07/2009, -0/+0JBoss!!
- sunflash2, on 01/07/2009, -0/+0Or they could just start their own distro.... but wait M$ crapware pays them to much
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -2/+1It is that easy.
- kokuei, on 01/07/2009, -3/+2Are you an idiot, or just a fanboy?
- katorga, on 01/07/2009, -1/+0Dell should buy Redhat. And if they do, that is the beginning of the end of Microsoft as we know it. Apple makes 30% margins on off-the-shelf PC components. They do that because they can completely differentiate their products from the market. The fact is the OS is the only way to do this while still using affordable mass-market hardware. Microsoft turned the PC makers into bland, clones of each other. A Dell, HP or any other PC is IDENTICAL. They can only compete on price.
Owning Redhat would allow Dell to build its own OS X, and really stand out. The plus is that Redhat is also a great server OS, so it would not cut them out of the Data Center market like Apple is. - jwmann, on 01/07/2009, -7/+4That's Dell.
Buy ***** hardware.
Get ***** Linux distro too!
*waits for flames* - ifruit, on 01/07/2009, -4/+1Dell should buy AMD.
- clickwir, on 01/07/2009, -9/+5Really? Because YouTube was on it's last leg before Google came and saved it.
bull *****.
Maybe only YOU read about struggling companies, but companies doing well are more of a target. - yurimxpxman, on 01/07/2009, -7/+2Crappy hardware, crappy software.. the two should've married each other years ago, when they first implemented the RPM system.
