- redwire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I freaked the guy at the apple store out with this one! Muhaha :)
- briang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1will it play FLAC?
It mentions that it allows you to use other file types, but i diidn't see which ones. - kitkat7112, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1worked for me too. nice.
- dkovalev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1alright honestly ipodlinux has been around for a while, and the coolest part is the fact that u cna now watch videos, and goto ipodlinux.com and u cna actualy see that its really simple to have this extra feature on your ipod. It DOES work with 4g/mini/photo just not "supported" but the forums answer every question.
- hackman7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice digg man... worked awesome for me!
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Worst case scenario for "***** up" the iPod is that you use Apple's iPod Software updater to restore the iPod. Yes, that will restore the previous firmware too. All you have to do is to force the iPod into disk mode, and instructions for that are easy to find if you google for them.
- workofart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice tutorial, tried it on my bros mini, love the fact that now i can play tetris on it.
- technologic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0roxet, ipodlinux currenlty works all other iPods except the 4th generation. the update source featured in that tutorial works to include the ipod mini. hope this helps.
- .humanoid., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is very cool and I defiantly recomand this to everyone...
- Deusiah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Apple should replace them IMO, if their firmware was good enough or easily allowed modifications it wouldn't have happened in the first place.
- roXet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does this only work on ipod minis?
- vemon388, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well if you '***** up' your ipod you can just take it back and say there was a software problem and it wont turn on.....
i love cheating the man - maskd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only problem with this is that the mini isn't "officially" supported, so if it ***** up on you you are on your own. Also what is with this guide and having all the steps as seperate images? Why not text?
- Deusiah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Previously I thought iPod's were crap because of lack of OGG support however this hack will one day make it possible for 4G iPod's to play OGG. Until then I still have my trusty iRiver.
- _wayne_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I put ipodlinux on my iPod a few weeks back. It was fun to dink with for about 5 minutes, then the "new" wore off. The version of Tetris on my cellphone was better than the Tetris in ipodlinux, and other than randomly exploring the directories it created, it wasn't useful for me at all. This may be a textbook case of the difference between Linux and a normal OS: Linux is a technology playground where a normal OS is for getting stuff done. Yes, ipodlinux is a neato-cool-so-you-can-run-linux-on-your-ipod kind of thing, but otherwise of limited usefulness at this time. My opinion -- I could be wrong.
- dconlon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only reservation I'd have about this is that supposedly the MTBF of these drives is measured in just 10s of hours (the iPod HD only spins up for a few seconds every so often to fill its RAM)... so running it flat-out might not be the best idea...
- Huskyr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I’m not that impressed with iPodlinux. It’s a nice addition, and cool to experiment with, but the interface is much slower than Apple’s, and it takes ages for a song to load (on my 3g Ipod). The only reason why i ocassionaly use iPodLinux is the ability to record sounds without an expensive accesory.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This doesn't replace the iPod's OS, it installs separate and gives you a dual boot.
However, on my 3rd gen atleast, it still can't yet play back high bitrate MP3 and AACs without stuttering up a storm. It can play back 128kbps files and the like, but nearly all of my music is AAC VBR ~280kbps. However, since you can dual boot, you can leave the linux on your iPod and use the main OS for your music no problem. I always like to jump into linux and show off by playing videos. - spid3rfly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It worked great for me!
- Nick42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The only reservation I'd have about this is that supposedly the MTBF of these drives is measured in just 10s of hours"
I would be extremely surprised if iPod HDs only lasted that long. When you have one hooked up to your computer for transfering files, it's constantly spinning until you unmount it. If they failed as easily as you suggest, I would imagine we'd be hearing way more stories of people who hooked their iPods up to their computer overnight to charge and forgot to unmount the volume, only to find the HD had died the next day. - modeps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can I still use itunes to put my songs on it? I've spent a ton of time cataloging everyting in there...
- HydraulicToast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No 4th Gen ipods? Sucks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very old but very cool!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0will it play FLAC?
It mentions that it allows you to use other file types, but i diidn't see which ones.
flac IS THE SHIZIT. and what about normal ipods? :( ...
