Now you're a philanthropist if you donate to open source??
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Propaganda: "Just by using The Linux Fund Visa card, ordinary geeks can participate in serious philanthropy, at no out-of-pocket cost to themselves."
- microft, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2PLEASE SOMEBODY, send me one to Portugal!!! (It doesn' even have to work :-) )
- Salviati, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Sure, so I will just address it to:
c/o Microft
Portugal
Seriously, with a name like 'microft' are you sure this is the card you're looking for?- microft, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1don't let the (nick)name fool you.... I'm all Linux!
- bentrop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What's wrong with microft? It's closer to Mozilla's "Mycroft" http://mycroft.mozdev.org than evil "Microsoft" http://www.microsoft.com
- MeMongo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There's one on the web site. Save the image and use Photoshop to put "Microft" on the face
- spikeyone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, no Photoshop! GIMP the sucker.
- Salviati, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Sure, so I will just address it to:
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -10/+5Wasn't the Linux Fund sort of over half a year ago?
- mumblyjoe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The Fund has had problems, one of the largest was when the original card company decided to get out of the business. Obviously, they've found a new company.
- CyberPhoenix, on 10/10/2007, -7/+4Will MS let people charge patent extortion payments to this card?
- cquilliam, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I can't seem to find this card on their Canadian affiliate at http://www.mbna.ca/card_directory.html . I guess it isn't available yet.
- obinine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yeah... i tried to sign up but it looks like its usa only at this point
- hansonc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3MBNA was bought by Bank of America who dropped the program. The new card is being issued by US Bank. RTFA.
- mannaran, on 10/10/2007, -12/+3I want Ubuntu on card!
- linkin1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4yea!
- TTChopper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5If you live in Australia, there's a website that lets you create an EFTPOS card with any picture you want on it. It's meant to be to send gifts to friends, but if you wanted a tux card in your wallet, you could just do it and send it to yourself. Or if you have any die-hard linux friends, I'm sure they'd appreciate a linux card on their next birthday... anyway, the website is www.quickgifts.com.au
- goflyers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You can do this in the U.S. also: http://www.firstnational.com/fnb/personal/cardproducts/oneofacard/splash.asp
- daxsymbiont, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2horey!
who said linux is communism? - n8r0n, on 10/10/2007, -9/+4This is a great idea, too bad I don't use credit cards.
- Otto, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Don't use a credit card? But then, how do you buy things? Cash? Checks? What a massive pain in the ass that must be!
Credit cards are essential. I can't imagine not using one.
- Otto, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Don't use a credit card? But then, how do you buy things? Cash? Checks? What a massive pain in the ass that must be!
- somegeologist, on 10/10/2007, -12/+1Here's a novel idea, make something worth buying and sell it.
- MikeDawg, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4I don't like the interest rate, and I don't like the relatively short grace period of 20-25 days, I'm used to at least 30 days.
- wakkow, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Assuming you don't carry a balance, what's the difference?
- mightyzug, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3ready to cancel my visa just to get this one :)
- cfarmer8, on 10/10/2007, -3/+812.24% to 21.24% APR haha
- MeMongo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9The donations to the Linux Fund have to come from somewhere. Plus, if you pay your bill within the grace period, the interest rate is 0%
- Ai3d, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1That's ugly. I was expecting a cute one like http://tux.crystalxp.net/
- WizNo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It is the original Tux, but they could have made the design of the card(background for instance) a bit nicer.
- hansonc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5wow. any of those would be retarded.
- ghpoobah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Does anybody remember the card from the 90s? I still have mine locked away in a drawer somewhere for nostalgia's sake. I remember putting $3k+ on that card, but the linuxfund received like $8. I guess it adds up if you have enough of these...
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Tux is on everything, can we move on with our lives yet?
- jms10446, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Did you even read the story!
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes, I'm simply saying there are too many stories of Tux on this, Tux on that.
- jms10446, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Did you even read the story!
- compgeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I wish Horizon Plus would let customers pick their card logos off the internet for the prepaid mastercards here in Canada (basically like a debit card you transfer money onto the prepaid mastercard then use it look a regular mastercard to pay for online purchases or w/e and it just deducts then you can refill it and it doesn't touch your credit really great idea imo)
- tdgx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Was interesting until I noticed US Bank is providing them. Pretty notorious for screwing customers over. And the interest rate range sucks.
- nbx909, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Damn it I have a Mastercard :(
- altgeeky1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have one of the originals from 1999... still works, but since MBNA was bought by Bank of (north) America the card's been scheduled to be replaced this summer. So the timing is right. What's very curious is TLF has never published HOW MUCH money went to Blender, WikiPedia, etc. They state "over half million dollars" on open source initiatives, and list both prominent projects... and failed "local" projects that "cost more than expected".
It's easy to be cynical about the lack of % or $ to each project. I've emailed them for this information, and I'll post their response here.
My Linux Fund t shirt still fits. Wow... was it really 8 years ago? lol. - jkizzle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1you would think that a linux charity that supports programmers would have a halfway decent site.
- richardiscool, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Are they showcasing some of the terrible design linux has on the face of the card?
- squidy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Damn it, it is a Master Card in Québec... why doesn't Desjardins make such a card!
- JohnnyXmas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"Participate in serious philanthropy,
at no out-of-pocket cost to yourself."
LOL yeah, except for the INSANE interest rates!- Fratz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Honestly, anyone who chooses a credit card based on the interest rates should probably just not have a credit card to begin with. I don't even know what my card's interest rate is because it never comes up when you pay your bills on time.
- ecksfilter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I prefer my World of Warcraft Visa!!!
- fatlip, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2yay i applied :)
just another one to add to my collection of 9 billion credit cards. i guess i'll cancel a few. - omphteliba, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0why must this thing be so ugly? ok, tux looks great als always, but the rest? this could be better! no community contest for the design?
- fatlip, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1its LINUX
be happy its not black with white text saying "bash$ 1234 4567 8900"
...actually that'd be pretty hot- BigJ27, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I would get that one in a flash. Even if it's a solid color card, with no tux!
- fatlip, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1its LINUX
- DrStrabismus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2But does it run Linux?
- zbeast, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Credit card debt sucks.
So if your really interested in supporting the Linux Fund why don't you just spend Cash!
If you do that you wont have to pay, late fees, transaction fees, interest on your balance, yearly credit card fees, over limit fees.
With all the money you'll be saving you can send that to the Linux Fund.- atbnet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I only use credit cards and I never had to pay any fees or interest. Maybe if you don't know what the hell you are doing you shouldn't use credit cards.
- cephelo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I'd love to switch to it, but US Bank can [string of a dozen expletives deleted].
- gorkish, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You could just send a project $20 and that would be likely more than they would ever see from this ridiculous card. According to people I have known who carried the last iteration of this the fund receives an impossibly small percentage (talking 0.1% or less) while you have to carry around a card with terrible terms from a company that has a fairly poor reputation.
I don't want to slam on it too much because it probably does *some* good but the facts are that they've never been forthcoming about how much money they receive and how they go about distributing it. My guess is that it's like unfortunately many NPO's and a lot of money gets unnecessarily skimmed in the form of salaries or administrative fees (regardless of the founders' intentions).
In this case with a credit card, there are going to be two organizations 'taking their cut' before it ultimately gets to its goal -- projects that need funding. The saddest part is that these projects are (generally) able to take donations directly. Just remember that if you ever pay a SINGLE dollar of interest or fees on this card you could have afforded to give it directly to a deserving open source project instead -- and it could have been one of your own choosing!. - gfnw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Starring Samuel L. Jackson?
- amoore260, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A micro Linux kernel should be embedded on the magnetic strip. lol
