- carpespasm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+40cool, but it wouldn't have known what it's about if i didn't have the description.
- zonk3r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Wow, that video explains everything! Surely everyone will understand why DRM is bad now. Wait, that was about DRM right? The bird thing and the cage and all that?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19Are you ***** kidding? Without the description its totally impossible to tell what the cartoon is supposed to be about!
Hell, even those odd Zune ads are clearer than this *****! - aussiekevin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15I read the description and I'm still not sure I know what it was about.
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Truth DOES happen:

I'm just glad car manufacturers don't implement these practices into their anti-theft systems by disabling the right hand turn after falsely identifying me as a carjacker. - Lord_oftheTrons, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Thats not a flag. They are musical notes.
- ChromaVita, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Or legally for that matter.
- gbraad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Also look at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryXDhXqR-SE. It is called Interchangeability… it is from the guys at defectivebydesign.org, the Campaign to eliminate DRM.
- kabukibear, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I saw it more as the evolution of music in general. In that respect it was interesting but if it was ABOUT the rise and fall of DRM there should've been more with the caged bird. That part seemed pretty insignificant with respect to the rest.
- TheJenks, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10I thought it was pretty average, nothing stood out and it was really bland.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Try http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryXDhXqR-SE instead.
(the period gbrand stuck at the end of the URL screws up youtube). - badassninja, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I, like everyone else just want to own my music. We won't put up with DRM *****, we wouldn't even put up with it for free, let alone paying for music with DRM. I back up all of my music at perfect quality because I love music, want to try to stop me? I know the name of at lest 30 great torrent sites.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5That pretty much sums it up. They made consumer-friendly-warm-fuzzy DRM palatable by the masses, which now don't really think their content is limited at all so long as their iPod can play whatever crap piece of garbage they put on it.
Thanks to this widespread acceptance corporations like Sony and MS now have free reign to impose whatever heinous restrictions they want on the content you've bought!
Apple - The Great Enabler! - spudlyo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5***** incomprehensible.
- WoollyMittens, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Once and for all. DRM is not about piracy, however much they try to sell it as that. DRM gives them control over your media. The file you unlock now, is wortless if they turn off the unlocking server in a few years time. They are holding the cultural creativity of a generation hostage.
- philba, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I liked the thousand flowers (sorta) metaphor but then they confused it with a bird flying free. Best to stick with the bird metaphor. Also, the capture of music by the labels and the people freeing the music needs to be clearly shown. Still, I liked the visuals even with the mixed metaphors. Good soundtrack as well.
- VegasKill, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Arrgh, a pirates life for me.
- fortressgame, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4made no sense
- roebeet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Birdsong > single person > multiple persons > music on paper > orchestra > phonograph > analog tape > digital > DRM (traps the birdsong). People manage to set the birdsong free, however.
- rodted2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Genus!
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You forgot to start all that with "breaking:"
- nixdoctor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2This video is very crafty actually. The message is given in a very subtle language, but comes out to be very strong if you watch the video patiently. I am astounded by this video: it tells the entire message without saying a word! Hats off to the ones behind this :)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7Blame Apple for the universal acceptance of DRM. If they never agreed to the terms for iTunes music distribution set by the industry, then all this ***** never would have happened.
- chrisc262, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2FairUse4WM
- addicted68098, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11. I was hoping this was referring to Bird Song by The Underwolves (great song that I wouldn't want to be trapped)
2. Due to my short attention span I thought it was a Red Hat Commercial
2.5 (Illustrating File sharing)
3. But it wasn't
4. But after a careful examination of the page it was,
I don't think DRM is stopping anyone from stealing music, since most music on Bittorent is of a higher quality then a legit download. I think watermarking is the way to go. I buy CDs and I like buying CDs, I feel I get a higher quality of music, and something of value. - zlyoga, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1too much effort to watch something so vague
- bshock, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'd be happy to dance on the grave of DRM, as well as that of every asshat who ever suggested it. But the fact is, asshats who think that DRM is a good idea tend to be the sort of abstraction-impaired, authoritarian idiots who tend never to change their thinking for their entire lives, because it's just too damn' difficult for them. DRM will be back again and again and again, for as long as asshats exist -- just like tax breaks for the wealthy.
- addicted68098, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Or maybe a unique purchase ID to your account then to your credit card!
- MeneerR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, watermarking is the trick. But then you have to agree that they connect your passport number to your purchases. And still maybe there could be a way to get rid of the watermark. I'm not sure.
- db113456, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Citizen news is never irrelevant, specially not when important subjects are being discussed , and not within the 5-10 minute gaps between commercials.
- db113456, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well put
There is an issue with restricting you ability to use what you have paid for in the way of content, but that looks more like a side effect compared to the main issue of the content itself being kept completely hostage to their will to let you use it.
Just look at the recent Google debacle with their DRM encumbered video service .... Not criticizing Google here, just providing a vivid and correct example. - Dhalgren, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, just show someone with an iPod downloading something from Musicmatch and then trying to play it on their iPod...
- schotty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1As much as I love Red Hat's work, that is a MUCH MUCH MUCH better video from all points. Short, simple, to the point, and you dont need to be an uber nerd to get it. Thanks for the vid.
I would like to add that the Red Hat video is still in the works and can use all of our input and critique in making it good. - paulisnotdead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1damn I meant to digg you down but my hand slipped
- tcolin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0We just posted the elements and raw files to make the mash-ups.
Let us know what else you need.
http://truthhappens.redhatmagazine.com/2007/08/28/bird-song-the-raw-materials/ - tcolin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yeah, that's an apt criticism. Generally, if you aren't familiar with DRM, it's really hard to get. Given that our aim is to show people what it's about, this is a flaw. With luck, forthcoming versions will address this.
But nothing should depend too much on its title to explain it.
I agree. - meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3If Apple hadn't have signed up for DRM then they wouldn't have the rights to the music. As it stands, they have one of the most generous DRM schemes out there and if they hadn't have taken the deal, someone else would have. It wasn't like anyone else had DRM deals with the record labels. Also, did you miss the whole DRM free music thing they have going on?
Take your FUD somewhere else. - VEKrueger, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Um.
What?
That made no sense whatsoever. I mean, symbolism is great and all, but that was a bunch of dots around a campfire and a caged bird. Being vague does not a good video make. - carbonfree314, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0You're also missing the guy with the hand to his face and Phoenix Wright.
HOLD IT! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0I didn't get it
- seinman, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Best comment ever.
- Backwards2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Another anti-DRM posting by the usual crowd of posters. How enlightening - not! Way to go to make DIGG an irrelevant citizen news site.
- marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0That's what SHE said. (About YOU)
- toxictonic, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Meh, so does piracy.
