Excuse me, Dumbass, what do YOU think the definition of "social bookmarking" is??? Of course it's a repository of links to other sites...THAT'S THE WHOLE FREAKING POINT! - Gundam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Linux commands and they are DOS cousins... mmmmmmm stupid typos...
- tjkrz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2digg is just becoming a repository for links to other sites. People are more interested in getting published on the front page than adding something of value.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unix_programs - Techeez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great post, thank you very much. I am just delving into Linux and this will help tremendously. Thanks again.
- xenoNfluX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Obviously over 200 people found it useful, so I don't find any problems with it. If you don't like it, report it. Stop whining and use digg like it was meant to be used.
- dinki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A guy I work with who trains some of users on Unix was very excited to find something similar to this a few years ago. He soon found out that most of those users had no idea what DOS was.
If you know DOS, learning Unix commands is a bit easier. If you don't know DOS, learning Unix commands is only somewhat more challenging as you need to figure out what you are trying to accomplish with each command. - MWWLSE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0their
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you ever need to go from linux => DOS, 1) cry, 2) look at this quickref and links: http://paperlined.org/reference/dos.html, 3) if you do nothing else, at least search alt.msdos.batch.nt for your questions. DOS has so many evil undocumented features, but the people there know what the heck they're talking about.
- ooooo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0things like this made going to linux easier than going to nt for me lol

Doesn't it make you cringe? - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oddly convinent, just reinstalled Cygwin yesterday, after installing it, finding it useless (for me), then uninstalling it a while ago
Usefull :)
- Ben - gaminggeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This should be handy if I ever need to use dos 'cause I am so used to unix
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0old, but helpful. thanks
- dramatools, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can digg it. These little crib sheets are always handy.
Note: Some *nix variants understand DOS-ish commands:
Systems that use GNU coreutils have a "dir" command, though the "-w" flag has a different meaning.
The 'bash' shell's 'set' command can display environment variables, but cannot set them. You'll still need to use 'export' to put variablees into the environment.
Many Linux distros (and Mac OS X) ship with InfoZip, a PKZip-like archiver. Just use 'zip archivename.zip filename[s]'. The command 'unzip archivename.zip' unpacks zip archives.
Bash has a 'help' command for shell built-ins.
Most modern shells support aliases (the classic Bourne shell and 'ash' don't). For example: you can use 'alias rename=mv' to mimic the DOS rename command. Put aliases into your ".profile" or ".bashrc" (if you're using Bash) to have them available to all new shells.
Finally, even though it hasn't been updated in nearly ten years, Ted M A Timar's UNIX FAQ (http://www.faqs.org/faqs/unix-faq/faq/) still has plenty of good information for beginners and advanced users alike. - hawks5999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks for pointing that out dknighton. I actually don't digg a story unless it is something I want a shortcut to... such as this type of thing. Frankly, I'm never going to need to find the story "iPod Nano released" again because it will be ever. I don't think people understand the "bookmarking" aspect of social bookmarking. Digging has turned into voting for a story vs. marking a link or story useful. It's sad in a way that slashdot and digg have a lot of the exact same content. I think digg should be more utilitarian and less just "ooo big news!!!". But that's just me.
Oh and +digg on this. - quiggley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmm, anyone find this a bad link?
as in it doesn't work at all? - dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 Have they been hit by the "dugg effect"? (Or whatever we decided we'd call it when this happened).
- slowspin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess their right when there saying their are certain ways they're words should be used.
- bnolsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Linux commands and they are DOS cousins"
Ouch, Linux commands are by and large the same as the unix commands have been for ages, using the same underlying OS features.
DOS commands were a rip off of the unix commands of the day. They aren't even close to being cousins. - gizram84, on 05/30/2009, -0/+0i would much rather a linux to dos reference sheet...i know my linux commands 1000 times better than DOS....plus dos does switches weird..

- xafan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I only wish that an admin would remove stuff like this.
- xafan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Stupid posts like this should *never* be on the front page. It's some rather lame, incomplete list of commands on some obscure person's blog. This is *not* news and it should not be on a news site. This could also be found on Google easily if someone actually wanted the list.

What is Digg?
