second of all, why are you coming onto this site and behaving like an angry prick to people you don't even know? you must have some serious issues and i suggest you really look in the mirror and try to figure out where your parents went wrong - endersshadow, on 10/11/2007, -4/+29Server's down. - Buelldozer, on 10/11/2007, -8/+32I'll take that bet, and your money in five years.
MS has far too much market share and inertia to see a 90% reduction in size in a mere five years.

Why do you think that people blame M$ blindly? Do you have any evidence of this? Microsoft has engaged in the dirtiest, most unfair, unethical business practices it can short of physically stealing from and killing its competitors. A decent place to start is this book: http://www.amazon.com/Hard-Drive-Making-Microsoft-Empire/dp/0887306292 - jessejoedotcom, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18"Thirded - but Ubuntu is too fat for my liking (it's very nice to look at, though), I'm sticking with Fedora."
Huh? Fedora needs 5 CDs to install and Ubuntu one. Fedora is by far the fatter distro, that's was the original reason I switched to Ubuntu. - Greyarea, on 10/11/2007, -10/+25In my opinion Linux needs fewer distros, more focus, more direction. Without that then Linux isn't going to go anywhere fast. There's just too many camps and too much infighting.
That said, it'll be interesting to see where the one distro that *does* appear to have focus and direction (Ubuntu) will be in a few years' time. - sailor, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15He is angry because there are no children around to abuse...he is lousy a warcraft...and is fat with a small prick...
- prammy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16I did not realize that Microsoft is the inventor of the wordprocessor, spreadsheet, presentation app.
I guess someone should let IBM know since they own Lotus which made 123, AmiPro etc. - dasilva333, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17i think torvald is right, if microsoft owns 100+ patents that linux is using they can easily re-write em all JUST so Microsoft doesn't have that little legal ball hanging over their head, i mean we all know microsoft is not going to sue, they are just going to use it for leverage, so if microsoft reveals what patents are being infrigined upon then the linux community can just rewrite them, they lose their leverage, simple as that... am i seeing it right?
edit: i agree with dondara - goat2, on 10/11/2007, -8/+20have fun with your delusion

- bllambert, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10AOL had numbers like that once too. Look back 5 years. It can happen, but I doubt it will so quickly for microsoft.

Oh, and to Greyarea, +1. ;) - input, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11"""
Linus Torvalds has hit back at Microsoft's claims that it holds 42 patents that are infringed by the Linux kernel.
Torvalds, the leader of the project to create the Linux kernel, was contemptuous of Microsoft's claims and has asked Redmond to name the infringements so that their veracity can be challenged and workarounds found.
"Naming them would either make it clear that Linux is not infringing at all (which is quite possible, especially if the patents are bad), or would make it possible to avoid infringing by coding around whatever silly thing they claim," he said in an email exchange with Information Week.
"So the whole 'We have a list and we're not telling you' should tell you something. Don't you think that if Microsoft actually had some really foolproof patent, they'd just tell us and go, 'nyaah, nyaah, nyaah!'?"
Torvalds added that Microsoft might have patent problems of its own if the company was to expose its software to public scrutiny in the same way as Linux.
He said that operating system procedures have not changed much since the 1960s, and many companies, including IBM, have patents of which Microsoft could well find itself in breach.
Torvalds was sanguine over the possibility of legal action and believes it unlikely that anyone would get sued.
"Microsoft would have to name the patents then, and they are probably happier with the [fear, uncertainty, doubt] than with any lawsuit," he predicted.

""Microsoft would have to name the patents then, and they are probably happier with the [fear, uncertainty, doubt] than with any lawsuit," he predicted."
It doesn't take a genius to know thats true and he is right to call them out. Their threats are to keep enterprise from jumping ship out of fear their vendor could be sued out of business. I'm not going to single out M$ as shady, unethical business guys since most big companies would do the same and do so daily. It's too bad that these tactics don't backfire and give them the terrible publicity they deserve. Again, the unwashed masses just don't care as long as it's cheap. - Fordi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11*sigh*
Aero, you've got to lay off the prejudice. Torvalds' physical appearance rather obviously has nothing to do with his qualities as a human. I mean, Steve Jobs usually has the attitude and appearance of a preist, sans collar, but you don't see me saying he ***** altar boys. - smithco, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12The market can change drastically, and quickly too. Once apon a time, IBM was the 800-lbs gorilla, now it's not. Oracle used to completely dominate the database market. WordPerfect was once the defacto standard of word processing. There was a time when Digital was the juggernaut mainframe company, and Honeywell owned the remote terminal market. I'd wager that most Diggers have never even heard of Digital and Honeywell.
In an industry where innovations are regular, a 90% market share is no guarantee of future success. - Murdats, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11"Thirded - but Ubuntu is too fat for my liking (it's very nice to look at, though), I'm sticking with Fedora."
and that is exactly why there is not, and probably will never be 1 distro of linux.
if a standard distro gets defined (essentially what ubuntu is atm) like above people will find it doesnt suit them and will
get or start dev on a distro more suited to them.
I agree, the majority of the linux community needs to focus on a single direction, but part of the bueaty of linux is its diversity and you
can find a distro that nearly perfectly suits you, or if you have the skills, make it. - pizzatsf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Congratulations aero1, you're a pretty good troll.

You know, the entire Win32 TCP stack and several of the net utilities are just closed ports of the BSD products. - misterjangles, on 10/11/2007, -22/+30I am usually one of those people defending MS here, not because I love them that much, just because I think people blame MS blindly and praise blindly as well.
As a defender of MS and a long-time user I have to say, if any MS employee is here reading this....
For the love of god! Please get your heads out of your asses! Christ all-mighty you are making it hard as hell to like MS - your troops are getting blasted down here dudes and you all seem to have your thumb up your ass! get it together! - lessew, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11It's people like you that contribute to the image of Mac users being snobs.
- mandarin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Hahaha those are the most common words I keep hearing every year....
- Halaster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Even if the government mandated and passed a law requiring everyone to get rid of Windows or be jailed their market-share would still be larger than the numbers you are predicting in 5 years.
- masterofshadows, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7actually omarciddo is right for the wrong reason. There is a rule called laches which a person could invoke at this point. Seeing as Microsoft has announced that:
1) there are 42 patents, none of which they will reveal.
2) They do not intend to litigate
The principle of laches can now be invoked, and Microsoft may find their patents invalidated.
Refer to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laches_(equity) - Spuy767, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13Not entirely accurate, I think it's going to take longer than that, but I think that if Microsoft continues on its current path, it will certainly not be the giant that it is now.
- chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -19/+26if Linux gains for than 2% in the next 5 years it will be amazing.
- Jorenko, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7You answered your own question there, bub.
I think the only way for Linux to get out of this hole is for Red Hat, IBM, and perhaps Novell (fat chance, the damned collaberators) to get together and sue MS for libel in response to these claims. -
