- inactive, on 07/20/2008, -0/+20I like the idea of a "free software only" option when installing Ubuntu, so I don't have to burn a separate Gobuntu cd. It'd be nice if Fedora did the same thing. . .
- Mrdudeperson, on 07/21/2008, -0/+12Love Linux. While I can't use it for everything It's good for the basic stuff. I'm hoping to set my folks up with ubuntu so they can stop complaining about how there windows PC is so slow.
- inactive, on 07/20/2008, -0/+11I wish I could use them all, but I have a pretty sweet setup right now
- brainnovate, on 07/25/2008, -1/+11I'm a Ubuntu guy myself. I love seeing linux stories elbow their way to the front page!
- xryancat, on 07/21/2008, -1/+11Evidence of what?
Here's another tid-bit: Christmas comes in December.
But I'd fact check that to be sure. - Mootabolife, on 07/21/2008, -2/+11Sweet setup = Windows 3.1.
Ubersweet = dos.
Sosweetitkillsoldpeople = punch card system - ileftfark, on 07/21/2008, -0/+8I just hope KDE4 is stable enough to use on a regular basis by then. They've made great strides in making it beautiful (appearance has been a big issue for devs in the last couple of years), but once it's stable, it will be ***** sweet.
- jasmus, on 07/21/2008, -1/+8While i don't care if it exists of not, can someone tell me why one would want the free software only option? I'm not flaming, I just can't imagine ever caring that much that two or three packages on my system are closed source.
- Boktai1000, on 07/21/2008, -0/+6I think some company's make it a requirement that all source code be available so they can change it to there needs or something like that, while even if they don't need the source for a certain package it helps the open source movement apparently.
Pretty much every user will just install the default set up though, and it would be a good idea to anyways since it has better support for devices. - Sabretou, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5By people's diggs. New to digg?
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5Or this "Congrats Ubuntu team, just don’t completely mess it up with that stupid theme."
Agreed. - TrevorBradley, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5I've been a Slackware Linux guy for 12 years now. New distros have come back out, I've looked at them, but always fallen back to Slackware.
I'm finally going to make the switch to Ubuntu at Christmas. - brie987, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5I have Puppylinux on a Thinkpad 240, makes the old girl fly!
- ut2k4king, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4Buried for fail.
- thegodfaza, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4I like fedora but sadly it doesn't play nice with my laptop so it's ubuntu for lappy.
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4The KDE 4.1 should be out before the next version of ubuntu ships. So yes, it should be very reliable :)
- benburned, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4Linux is awesome.
you fail. - inactive, on 07/21/2008, -2/+6Why so serious?
- deadbaby, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4Wow that's truly atrocious. They can't be seriously thinking of actually shipping that, right? Looks like the bathroom of a Taco Bell.
- xryancat, on 07/21/2008, -3/+6What setup would that be? Windows? Mac?
I use Ubuntu 8.04 as my primary operating system and I've invested way to much time to change to a new distro. (After so many hours of making changes to source code and compiling the thought of redoing it is a bit daunting.) Although I do like OpenSUSE... - SniperZero, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3That was an epic fail.
- jnordb, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3huh? I've been using Ubuntu for about 3 years now; I don't know what you're talking about....maybe we all need to chip in and buy you a copy of Ubuntu Linux for Dummies.
- CarzorStelatis, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3A new version of _Debian_? I'm a relative novice when it comes to Linux (brief experiment with Ubuntu, and an EeePC) and even I know that's a fairly significant event. Doesn't Debian release a new version about as often as the Bible?
- klitzbtc, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3I hope Fedora 10 doesn't break my heart like 9 did. Beyond that I would never seriously consider using any other of these distros as my desktop.
- Boktai1000, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3This is were free gets misleading, there is nothing included that isn't free, including everything on synaptic as far as I'm aware of. Theres something with Firefox and there artwork that you could consider "not free", its why Debian create Iceweasel afaik. If you want to know more just search up the googles, but you shouldn't be concerned with anything because everything is free in a money sense.
- nihility, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Also he kind of ran out of content after his first three on the list. I guess at least he was honest and said he didn't know anything about the new Gentoo or Puppy Linux?
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Didn't much like the quality of the article. The guy was just raving, really, and didn't have much in the way of concrete information about anything. And why does every pic on his blog in previous articles have a Photobucket placeholder asking me/him to "upgrade to pro"?
- Artemis3, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Ubuntu: More brown than ever, yay! :)
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/NewHumanTesting - jasmus, on 07/21/2008, -2/+4You're what's wrong with the linux community.
- brettalton, on 07/21/2008, -2/+4At least this article is well researched, at least in Ubuntu's case:
"a Free Software only install option (instead of the separate Gobuntu distro)."
Not a lot of people know that, unless they saw 1 and only 1 post on the Gobuntu mailing list. - jnordb, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I hope so. It has great potential, but it sucks so badly now I can't use it.
- daftman, on 07/21/2008, -2/+3So i can run a system without worry about being audited and hunted down by Microsoft.
The only thing that is non-free that is worth using is flash and media codecs. - jasmus, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2so what is in a default install of Ubuntu that microsoft would get ***** about?
- jnordb, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1You forgot Desq View from Quarterdeck running on top of MS-DOS....ah, the 80's....
- sam98597, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2what happened to unix?
- cutchyacokov, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Since this is Linux we're talking about it should have been Bruce Schneier instead of Chuck Norris. He is the Chuck Norris of the geek/security world.
http://geekz.co.uk/schneierfacts/
Edit: Come to think of it ASCII art of them would be rather similar but the beard looks too small to be Schneier's. - renegadeafk, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1They are only testing dark themes for bugs. That will NOT be anything close to the final theme.
- Mrdudeperson, on 07/21/2008, -2/+3Why argue? Linux is Linux. And Linux is awesome. The End.
- jnordb, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Puppy rules for putting old, "useless" hardware back to work. It's on one of our old systems and my kids use it all the time.
- tripzero, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1heh, I had no idea it was _that_ often! I guess I can start holding my breath again...
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Jesus, that new theme looks f*cking awful! Please tell me that's a joke...???
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Why Ubuntu? There are far better Distros out there, man: don't restrict yourself needlessly!
- MattBD, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Try Linux Mint. It's basically Ubuntu but prettier and with things like Flash already installed. Or PCLinuxOS is also good for this.
- inactive, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, Skype, Google Earth are all examples of non-free software that runs on Linux. If you run Linux, you can sudo apt-get install vrms and then run vrms, and it will tell you what packages you have on your system that are not free.
@jasmus - Some people choose to live by the philosophy of only using free software, some don't. I personally want that option, but I don't want to be limited as to what software I can and cannot use, which is why I use Ubuntu. - Vadi0, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Yes, it is a joke.
They said they'll be testing several themes during the alphas, this is just one of them. Which, I agree, is pretty fugly. - brettalton, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2Uhhh, don't let RMS see this thread...
- PacketScan, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I wouldn't touch Ubuntu with a 10 foot pole,
After they subjected everyone that used and updated it to a HUGE security risk.. Which was Completely UN-acceptable.
Ubuntu shouldn't be on anyone's list until they get their stuff together.. - actionM, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Debian is great.
- griffinjam, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0This is all great and all, but what I really want is a distro where sound, wifi, and flash all work 100% right out of the box.
The last time I used Ubuntu I spent weeks trying to get everything working only to get sound working around 30% of the time (but never after resuming from a suspend), wifi working about 80% of the time, and flash always working...very slowly. Then I realized there was something I could do to fix all these problems and it would only take about a minute or two, I put my Windows XP hard drive back in. I miss virtual displays and all the eye candy, but I love having everything actually work for a change. - Jorophose, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0No, you're mistaken.
Only Etch took a very long time to release, and even then it was only ~30 months. All the other releases took about a year, but one took about 18 months (jump from 2.2 to 2.4 IIRC, either that or it was 2.1 to 3.0). With Etch I'm pretty sure it's because they updated the kernel and they had to do all sorts of testing.
I'm glad Lenny is almost done though. Etch is really getting prehistoric at this point. And it's nice that they put Firefox3 in Lenny. -
