- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I find i have an easier time ripping dvds in linux than in windows.
- input, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Read the title.
- brianboyko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Also, I'm a bit flummoxed that AcidRip didn't even make the list.

- vuke69, on 11/10/2007, -1/+8Oops, comment system ate my backslashes, you know what to do...
- lunarcloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Um... copy paste in konqueror doesn't work for you? I use k3b though, pretty painless and simple, quick too.
- Kickersny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Still in development, but http://diva-project.org/ has a very promising future if more people get involved with the project.
(not affiliated in any way; just a fan of the project) - shinda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5you ever try kdenlive? Not sure if it can record from DV, but of the few non-linear video editors this was the one that didn't crash on opening, and I was able to do a few things with it. Not exactly a replacement app by any stretch of the imagination but right now it seems to be the most promising from my pov.
- brianboyko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I use K9copy for DVD ripping to a copy; and AcidRip for encoding to a compressed file.
What I'm looking for is a DV editing program on par with iMovie. (Kino is a nightmare and the Gnome movie editor isn't out of alpha yet.) - diggAddict, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Do any of the ones listed support XVID? - I was surprised XVID was not mentioned
- clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Wine with DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter still work the best for backing up commercial DVD's.
This site doesn't really seem to have much of a review besides a one line description, one line pro and one line con. Pretty light on the details. - theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Acidrip (which wasn't listed, but mentioned earlier in the comments) supports xvid.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love Handbrake to but is it any good on Linux? On their site it is listed as "CLI" does that mean it only has a command line interface?
- endersshadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I develop Vive...so imagine my surprise when it was the first thing that showed up. I was planning on redesigning the site and the updating the news after I officially released 2.0.0, but it looks like Digg has forced my hand. Gotta say, that's a pleasant surprise and a half!
- tektalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dugg and going in my number one list for future reference.
- tweder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where's the love for HandBrake?
Now that the estranged MediaFork has been adopted back into the main HandBrake codebase, things should be getting even better. Windows support has been introduced with the latest available beta, in addition the the established OS X and Linux builds.
On my C2D Macbook, I can literally rip in less time than it takes to even watch the videos themselves, and its dead easy to use on top of that!
http://handbrake.m0k.org/ - muffinmanpoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes.
- pixelbeat_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I found that there was no linux support for ripping DVD-VR format discs.
I.E. the discs created by DVD recorders including DVD camcorders.
So I wrote a program to decode this format:
http://www.pixelbeat.org/programs/dvd-vr/ - alpinweiss88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Here is how I get dvd -> divx, using mencoder straight from the dvd. I used to rip the vob files, but ran into various issues.
mencoder dvd://1 -af volnorm -srate 44100 -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=128 -noodml -vf scale=360:240,eq2=1.0:1.0:0.03:1.0 -sws 9 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vhq:vmax_b_frames=0:vbitrate=863 -ffourcc DX50 -o outfile.avi
You can do subtitles with -sid 00 (or whatever). Just do 'tcprobe -i /dev/dvd' to get all the good info from your dvd. If in doubt about which subtitles or audio track you are using, then pass the same options to mplayer first to check them out.. (e.g. mplayer dvd://1 -sid 00 )
Once you have a big avi file, you can split it up into chunks with avisplit. I usually chunk up movies into 10 chunks or so. That way you don't have to pan through a large movie file if you want to get to a specific part. - dtfinch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3mplayer/mencoder, ffmpeg, and mp3gain seem to provide everything I want.
- orb9220, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Wine with DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter still work the best for backing up commercial DVD's."
I agree nothing I mean nothing gives me the options that these two do in linux and xp,
Sorry but Video and Graphic options in Linux are still immature and lacking for the normal person.
Ive have used them all. Like k9 and k3b and they are getting there. Hope for speed and options to improve things like:
Custom compression for different parts of a dvd and user able to set compression.
Speed they all take more time 20-30% to encode and compress than dvdshrink in wine.
Set Custom target size. Come on some still make 4.7gb iso's You cannot burn a 4.7 onto a
4.38gb disc. that is the size for single layer 4464mb not 4.7
And don't even get me started on the lack of graphic programs.
I hope they really start to fly. I would love to get rid of xp but for now it's dual boot for me. - SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dvd::rip (listed as dvdrip) is excellent, I've been using it for years under both Fedora & Gentoo. It's essentially a gui written in perl for transcode. If you ever have any issues just post to their mailing list (after searching of course), and you'll get an amazing amount of intelligent responses.
- muffinmanpoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Because without "Top 10" in the title, it wouldn't have been dugg.
- google01103, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dvd95 has potential but crashes often
K9copy imho is the best I've used
And there are a miriad of other video rippers out there some better some worse - scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You must have a lot of hard disk space.
- DoctorWhohaa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And for encoding, take a look at ManDVD. It does basic menus with animations and sound, will encode video to a DVD, and integrates with K3B. It's a little bit rough in certain areas, such as how it calculates free space on the disc (going by encoded size, instead of total size), menus are grayed out but still operational, etc. But it works, allows you to define chapters, preview, etc. It has a very nice GUI, and is very easy to work with.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3To rip DVD/CD isos i just do: "cat /dev/cdrom > ~/cdrom.iso"
It has always worked fine for me.
(I think you can also use "cp /dev/cdrom ~/cdrom.iso" - opes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3
sudo apt-get install k9copy k3b - nograz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cat will not decrypt, which I need for streaming to my Roku PB. Cat also does not handle the new protection schemes they are using, like ARccOS.
Cat simply will not do.
Like others have said, nothing seems to beat DVD Shrink and DVD Decryptor under Wine. I just need tools to rip the DVD and trim all the fat from it and retain just the movie uncompressed to dump on my NAS. - SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dvd::rip supports Xvid (among other formats), however you can get better performance using other lavc (ffmpeg) codecs.
- mikal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Arc DVD Copy for Windows has just the amount of options I want for a quick copy.
http://www.newfreedownloads.com/imgs/9869-w520.jpg
Didn't try it under CXOffice yet. Hope it works. - seppevs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Under Windows I backup my DVD's with DVD-Rebuilder + CCE (Cinema Craft Encoder).
Now that's something I really miss in Linux! Under Linux I have to use a transcoder (like DVD-Shrink) which will always result in more quality loss. - himay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Ugh. Clicked too fast.
What's the best Linux MPEG-2 commercial-removing software?
I want to take my homemade DVR-MS and TP/TS files and cut the commercials out, then transcode to XviD avi file. It's got to be automated, got to be Linux.
I've heard avidemux2 is my best bet (I'm a UbuntuNewb), looking for suggestions. - himay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Related question to this:
- ryodoan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I am surprised Handbrake didn't make it.
It might just be where I am, and who I hang out with but that is all I ever hear about. - dugem1, on 01/26/2008, -6/+1That's great find
