- Legolover64, on 04/26/2009, -7/+54Dugg for Gnome-Do and Conky, both of which are great programs.
I would say something like "Why isn't KDE on the list?" but I feel like I'd start some sort of crazy distro holy-war... - nurbsenvi, on 04/26/2009, -15/+60Meanwhile Vista's top ten program from mininova.org goes like this:
Fallout 3
Left 4 Dead
Burnout paradise
GTA4
Call of Duty World at war
Warhammer 40000 2
World of goo
Farcry 2
Bioshock
Assassins Creed - ukblacknight, on 04/26/2009, -0/+41Just because someone has dugg it and hasn't left a comment, doesn't mean it's a blind digg. I digg loads of stories without commenting on them.
- BrownieMix, on 04/26/2009, -6/+42Buried for lack of VLC.
Just kidding, I dugg it. :) - ConfusedCartman, on 04/26/2009, -0/+28So far, I _love_ it. It detected my video card and asked me to install the driver instantly (something Windows fails to do nearly 100% of the time), and it is so customizable, it's amazing. It's almost as if Mozilla Firefox were an operating system. All I can say is, I might just be a convert.
- Thoku, on 04/26/2009, -2/+24World of Goo has a native Linux version.
- amirman, on 04/26/2009, -1/+22yeah because i would love to read 91 comments that say "wow, this is cool" or "good list" or "neat"
- jriggs, on 04/26/2009, -0/+20woop-woop! nerd spotted!
j/k i seriously miss seeing comments like this on digg. - computershack, on 04/26/2009, -7/+27Slick and fully formed my arse. When I have to manually edit /etc/nsswitch.conf to add wins to the hosts: line and install winbind just in order to get Windows network browsing working, then it's not fully formed at all and IMO, comes with a show stopping bug as this causes all kinds of headaches when working on Windows networks. They broke this as OOTB functionality in 8.04 and it's still broken now. Due to the massive amounts of posts about windows network shares browsing on ubuntuforums.org, it's a big issue for many people.
IT SHOULD WORK OUT OF THE BOX. IT DID UP TO 7.10.
And my lappy, like most, has Intel integrated graphics. I'd like to thank them for the 50% performance hit they've managed to introduce in 9.04.... - LostSoul83, on 04/26/2009, -2/+20I love the speed improvements with this new version. It boots quite fast on my ancient box with 1 gig of 333 MHZ RAM. It also takes about 1/5th as long to do a file-system check. Those always drove me nuts in prior versions.
- clip9, on 04/26/2009, -0/+17still bloated. Just use mplayer -shuffle. and why on earth don't you just use xargs instead of that loop?
eg:
find -iname '*.mp3' -print0 | xargs -0 mplayer -shuffle
The print0 arguments keeps xargs from splitting arguments on words. - Culyt, on 04/26/2009, -0/+17Geez... You don't need to rely on that bloat.
randomize-lines can be replaces with sort -R - TheCosmicFool, on 04/26/2009, -0/+14I like how 1 gig of 333mhz ram is ancient. I first skimmed over that and read 333mhz and thought it was a p1.
- smacksaw, on 04/26/2009, -1/+15I used to be a big fan of UNetbootin until I downloaded Netbook Remix and noticed their instructions:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/Fro ...
Until the release, I never had any reason to question UNetbootin, but I was having trouble with it so I tried Disk Imager and it was a lot faster than UNetbootin. More importantly, it worked.
The nice thing about UNetbootin is the ability to download the distro, however I'd rather get it manually and have some measure of control over it. Anyway, if you're like me and were using UNetbootin and nothing else, check out Disk Imager. - rockon4life45, on 04/26/2009, -8/+22Songbird?
Everybody knows that AmaroK kicks Songbirds ass on linux - sepelester, on 04/26/2009, -3/+14You're laughing but you didn't get the joke. Odd.
- billraydrums, on 04/26/2009, -1/+11Punchy Pedobear.
- waspbr, on 04/26/2009, -1/+11I for one prefer banshee, it is lighter on the system
- mcmlxxii, on 04/26/2009, -0/+10Thanks! I didn't know about the -shuffle argument :)
- dhughes, on 04/26/2009, -0/+9 You don't, use Synaptic or Add/Remove programs both of which are GUI apps, not command line.
- sloppychris, on 04/26/2009, -0/+9Score another for the good guys.
- amoeba, on 04/26/2009, -1/+9I've actually switched from Amarok to Songbird.
I like the Mozilla based plugin architecture and the handy extensions such as mashtape.
Plus, the interface is nice for navigating your collection by tags.
worth a look. - Culyt, on 04/26/2009, -1/+9Because that is not really something to download, you should use Kubuntu instead.
- GavinZac, on 04/26/2009, -0/+8Don't spam your crappy 'distro'.
- seanv775, on 04/26/2009, -0/+8While this is a great list, I'm surprised at recommending yakuake over guake. It performs the same functionality, but it doesn't require or use KDE libraries, so it runs smoother and things like terminal transparency work.
- sloppychris, on 04/26/2009, -0/+7Good to hear! Ubuntu does some things different than the Windows world, so it may take a bit of re-thinking stuff. A lot of it is for the better.
The folks at ubuntuforums.org are super nice and helpful if you have any questions. - ConfusedCartman, on 04/26/2009, -2/+9I'm inspired.
Thanks to Wubi, I'm installing Ubuntu side-by-side with Vista. I *hope* it's cool - I'll leave my thoughts from Linux once it's installed. - Fingel, on 04/26/2009, -0/+7First things I always install:
pidgin-facebook: chat with your friends without the stupid website
gtk-gnutella: fastest gnutella client ever, kicks frost/limewires ass.
Glipper: Gnome panel applet that saves your copy history so you can use it later.
Aircrack-ng + wireshark: So I can spy on my neighbours :P - TrevorBradley, on 04/26/2009, -1/+8I heard of GNOME Do for the first time a few weeks back and thought it a bit strange at first... now I don't think I could get by without it. Finding apps through a menu using a mouse, though convenient, seems damned slow now.
The plugins are nice too.. being able to type four keystrokes to autolaunch rhythmbox to search and play my entire NiN collection is pretty sweet. - mcmlxxii, on 04/26/2009, -3/+101) Ubuntu 9.04 iso
Why Songbird?
Won't
sudo apt-get install randomize-lines
IFS=$'\n'; for i in `find /PATH/TO/MY/MUSIC/ -type f -name \*.mp3 -iname \*ARTIST\* [-iname \*SONG\*] | rl --count=10`; do mplayer -softvol -af volume=-20 "$i"
do? - tk0680, on 04/26/2009, -4/+11Not only has this gone a long way over your head, but your head is too low to ever properly realise it.
- kokoshka, on 04/26/2009, -4/+11#1 on my list?
The previous version of the intel video driver, because without it I am unable to watch avi's on my laptop.
It's always something with linux...seriously how did this make it through testing?
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver- ... - infectaphibian, on 04/26/2009, -0/+6Very true. Ubuntu may just be the "gateway drug" to linux for many at this point.
- cesclaveria, on 04/26/2009, -1/+7and Vista, XP, Leopard all of them sound just like an OS name right?
And remember, the OS name is actually Ubuntu, the version is 9.04... Jaunty Jackalope is just a code name - switch10, on 04/26/2009, -1/+7windows sucks. Ubuntu works with my logitech webcam out of the box. no drivers needed.
- databeast, on 04/26/2009, -0/+5And if you have a laptop...?
- nibznik, on 04/26/2009, -4/+9Used to be on Ubuntu, but ended up downgrading to xp from vista, gonna try it again, see if the speed upgrades make a difference, and compiz is built in now? Thats awesome, I never dl'd it before cuz it was so much work to get going. This article made me yearn for my linux experimenting days...
- freibooter, on 04/26/2009, -0/+5I don't think you would have any performance advantage, the netbook remix is mostly about easy installation from USB and a better interface for small screens.
As you can see, the minimum requirements do not differ much from Ubuntu:
http://www.canonical.com/projects/ubuntu/unr
You might want to take a look at Xubuntu or entirely different distros that are more adequate for the task. - LucasHenderson, on 04/26/2009, -0/+5Pah..You call that ancient? I'm running it on my old 1ghz p3 with 256 MB of 133 Mhz ram. I should probably go with something lighter than GNOME, but even then, it's running fast enough to do what I need it to do(web browsing and document editing)
- stewacide, on 04/26/2009, -1/+6Should include Deluge which is IMHO the best torrent program on any platform at this point. OTOH Songbird is a mess: there are much better Gnome-native music apps (see: default Rhythmbox for starters).
- Majest12, on 04/26/2009, -2/+7dugg for conky. reminds me of rainmeter for windows.
- Ismith988, on 04/26/2009, -0/+4Google
- rpgmakr, on 04/26/2009, -1/+5Not if you like a good and simple DE :D
Nah, I'm just kidding, KDE has becore very minimalist (relatively) in KDE4. - rockon4life45, on 04/26/2009, -0/+4Try Xubuntu
- inactive, on 04/26/2009, -1/+4KDE ftw, i think it pretty much comes with 60% of these:
10. Ubuntu Tweak (kde comes with plenty of options (but sane defaults so you don't HAVE to use them))
9. Screenlets (I'm under the impression that kde4 supports kde, google, screenlet widgets, but im still on 3)
8. Handbrake (very powerful app, might be worth getting but k3b does the basics (acts as a front end if you install the tools)
7. Yakuake (i never found the need for this over just launching a full blown terminal on a custom shortcut, but i belive there is a kde4 version (i may be wrong though)
5. Songbird, not having used amarok2, i have to ask if this is better or the same as that, and additionally how long it they take to start up.
4. Conky, how is this different from screenlets (other than its behind your apps instead of infront, having both seams a bit silly
1. GNOME Do, kubuntu (kde3) had a nice tool like this by default, i think they made alt+f2 Powell enough in kde4 that there is no need for it
GNOME has its advantages ( simplicity and lots of separate programs to do stuff),but if your yearning for:
the easy customization of ubuntu tweak,
the launcher ability of GNOME DO,
a full on media player like songbird,
Nautilus to do more (seriously >80% the brainstorm ideas for Nautilus are already in konqueror)
You should probably take a serious look at kde4 (once it gets useable, which is apparently jaunty (but if you get burned, it may be worth giving 9.10 a try)). You can keep your favorite gnome/gtk apps (e.g firefox) and you can even drop kwin for compiz (maybe even metacity)
I'm not looking to start a kde vs gnome flamewar either (well maybe at the start of the post i was, but not anymore), both have there places but I'd defiantly suggest giving kde a try (install both side by side, its still smaller than a windows install). While there are many Window Managers, and Desktop Environments, KDE and GNOME are the most complete, they have apps to do almost anything, so even on the alternatives you may still have to depends on one or both of them for certain applications so figuring out which one is more right for you will probably be worth it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_environment
p.s for people worried about kde looking like windows, It doesn't have to
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=15qov49&s=5 (it doesn't have to look that complicated either) - gizram84, on 05/30/2009, -0/+3except a bajillion times better
- prettyawesome, on 04/26/2009, -0/+3Handbrake is one of my favorite tools. I've used it on both my Linux and Windows machines forever.
- nedzeve, on 04/26/2009, -2/+53. VirtualBox
... In other words, it's a free semi-equivalent of what Mac users have been using (Boot Camp or Parallels) to run the necessary Windows app now and again.
Not exactly. Parallels, yes. Boot camp, not so much.
Virtualization and multi-booting are two different beasts. The latter involves the user rebooting into different OS sessions, the former lets the user run the other OS concurrently, albeit for a slight to significant performance drag (depending on your hardware). - ethana2, on 04/26/2009, -0/+3http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/19402/
