- badqat, on 06/07/2009, -0/+23Why does the timeline end in 2002? There's nary a mention of the whole SCO "we own Unix, and Unix is in Linux" scam.
- MrHaiku, on 06/08/2009, -0/+14Has it been that long?
Well, happy birthday unix.
Here's to 40 more. - pak314, on 06/08/2009, -1/+151992: The Linux kernel is combined with GNU to create the free GNU/Linux operating system, which many refer to as simply "Linux." to piss off Richard Stallman.
- Alabaster1234, on 06/08/2009, -0/+13"Linux Torvalds writes Linux, an open-source OS kernel inspired by Minix."
Really... Linux Torvalds?
Does anyone proofread anymore? - spaceageminds, on 06/08/2009, -3/+14Great article but way too long, unnecessarily spread across 3 pages.
Single page text mirror: http://www.spaceageminds.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f ... - Wreckage, on 06/08/2009, -0/+11That whole SCO crap is best deleted from history.
- chadsmith729, on 06/08/2009, -2/+11Beard? Nope.
40 year old? Nope (26)
Fat? Nope.
Superior to everyone else in the computer world by using the command line on Unix? Yep.
Well thank you Charmrox for the great compliment! You batted 25%, not bad for a Windows user. - newmanium2001, on 06/08/2009, -0/+8Wow, so even the original UNIX Admin had a huge nasty beard too ...
- vulcanius, on 06/08/2009, -1/+8Is it just me or do we see a new version/chart of the "timeline of Unix" every few months?
- boazg, on 06/08/2009, -0/+4AIX ftw
- darthbob, on 06/09/2009, -0/+4***** you, two of my friends died trying to run Crysis.
- CaptCarrot, on 06/09/2009, -0/+3Only steal from the very best, I always say. :)

- CaptCarrot, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3Here's a nickel. Go buy yourself a *real* operating system.
- excitive, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2UNIX - awesomeness in darkness
- CaptCarrot, on 06/08/2009, -3/+5Than Vista? Let's hope!
- 4321234, on 06/08/2009, -1/+3So it all started at AT&T. I did not know that. That's an interesting parallel with the history of hacking having roots with the "phone phreaks"
- devans00, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2Cool. Unix was the first OS I learned.
Almost all my papers in college were done with vi editor. Way back in the old days of the 1980s. - duewydo, on 06/08/2009, -2/+4Proofread? Internet? Get outa here...
- infiniphunk, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2@specialK16:
lol, call me when you know anything at all and stop making a fool of yourself in general. - excitive, on 06/08/2009, -1/+3In fact there can't be a comparison
- bethlynnOLF, on 08/26/2009, -0/+1Come join us in Columbus Ohio for the Ohio LinuxFest - 40 Years of UNIX celebration. There on September 26, Dr Doug McIlroy, the genius behind C and UNIX, will keynote. The Ohio LinuxFest community is proud to continue in the UNIX tradition. Regardless of what operating system you use, all are invited to attend to learn how Linux, an 18-year old UNIX variant, has arrived in ubiquitous computing. From netbooks to telephones, from high performance clusters to the very webserver that www.digg.com uses: Linux is everywhere. Be part of history. Free registration is on our website

- ajsmth, on 06/08/2009, -8/+9But can it play Crysis?
- CaptCarrot, on 06/09/2009, -1/+2And you wonder why we don't give you root access.
- JQP123, on 06/08/2009, -0/+1As they say, written by social outcasts for social outcasts.
- dimension128, on 06/13/2009, -0/+1I find it quite interesting that in the windows world we are moving closer and closer to the cli. In windows vista, and 7, to really find what you want in the 'start menu' your best bet is to start typing what your looking for and wait for auto complete to narrow it down, then click on the command you desire.
How is that different from typing part of a command, hitting tab to auto complete it, then hitting enter? - ratrip, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1@ Chamrox:
*** Here's to 40 years of fat, bearded white men believing that they're superior to everyone else in the computer world - all because they refuse to move beyond the command line interface. ***
I know you mean that derogatory, but unwittingly you've given us superior white, fat, bearded men a very flattering compliment.
We are fat, so it must be that being able to use a Unix command line is a well paying, sought after skill. (And it is. Keeping the Internet humming along for instance.) No money, no food, no fat.
We are bearded and we believe in ourselves. Yes, we are individuals living life for ourselves, not for others, so we can express ourselves with beards, being fat and using CLI on Unix. No need to be skinny, using Windows and in constant need of approvel from others and therefore being a lemming.
So yeah, it's good being a white, fat, bearded man, with superior CLI skills... - ahmedinejad, on 06/09/2009, -1/+1can it run crysis?
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -0/+0By those who needed soap for those who fear it.
- ahmedinejad, on 06/09/2009, -1/+1when you guys done downloading dont forget to seed... we dying over here, you white asses.
- astronautje, on 06/07/2009, -4/+4"Year-by-year details of Unix' history"...
read that? i don't think so. - inactive, on 06/10/2009, -0/+0Ha ha, you are so ignorant that I couldn't resist. He's not talking about you as you are now, but what you are destined to be. No wonder you use Unix, you never think more than 1 step ahead.
- specialK16, on 06/08/2009, -2/+1Hurr.
You could argue that OS X is Unix based so your argument goes to *****. (then again I'm an anti-macbot so ***** OS X too.)
@chadsmith:
"Superior to everyone else in the computer world by using the command line on Unix? Yep."
lol no. Call me when you are using something like Open VMS and then you'll be superior. - CaptCarrot, on 06/08/2009, -4/+3Unix: Multics without the balls.
- doshindude, on 06/08/2009, -6/+2cd /home
sudo rm -rf * - diggtochina, on 06/08/2009, -9/+5GNU s not Unix
- Chamrox, on 06/08/2009, -14/+5Here's to 40 years of fat, bearded white men believing that they're superior to everyone else in the computer world - all because they refuse to move beyond the command line interface.
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -13/+2Windows 7 is better.
