- vtnerd, on 05/09/2009, -2/+27How much mail do you have BalancingAct?
I've got 6 years of POP mail stored locally and 2 IMAP accounts (storing local copies of everything) and Thunderbird takes seconds to open. I also run Lightning which syncs up with Google Calendar at startup.
Thunderbird is probably the most responsive and most useful mail app I've ever used. All it needs is true Exchange support instead of Weboutlook via IMAP, but I'm pretty sure MS is making the call on that one. - foreignwarren, on 05/09/2009, -0/+15Personally also never had a problem with Thunderbird.....except the slightly dated look......running on several different machines. Because I wanted something "new" though I started using Postbox on one of them and I'm convinced it's got superior usability features. Will wait to try the newer Thunderbird before deciding whether to switch all of them....but seriously loving Postbox!
- travistubbs, on 05/09/2009, -0/+11I use Evolution as my default mail client on Ubuntu, but I'm gonna have to bury your comment for three reasons:
1. You spelled "Evolution" wrong.
2. Your sentence is grammatically incorrect. (Should read "Evolution is better than Thunderbird."
3. You're trying to make a point that a certain program is better than another program, but you can't spell that program's name correct or express such in a proper sentence. This, in my opinion, undermines your statement you were trying to make.
(Don't wake up and start reading Digg comments. You'll get responses like this.) - MWeather, on 05/09/2009, -3/+13Thunderbird slow = 1,290,000 results
Outlook slow = 15,400,000 results.
Evolution slow = 30,500,000 results. - Cyborg326, on 05/09/2009, -1/+10You could enter any "*appname* slow" into google and get millions of hits, so that doesn't really prove your point.
In my experience thunderbird has been fine. - hagerman, on 05/09/2009, -0/+9Mirror:

- manstein01, on 05/09/2009, -0/+7It looks a lot like the old thunderbird look with some different folder icons.
- RaulMuadDib, on 05/09/2009, -0/+6@MWeather
You probably need to use Evolution CLIENT slow, if not you are going to get evolution, the actual process of evolving or the theory of Evolution.

- freeforall079, on 05/09/2009, -0/+4Spicebird FTW!
- stewacide, on 05/09/2009, -0/+4My mom uses Thunderbird on Ubuntu for her email. It works fine, but indeed it's very ugly as-is.
- BalancingAct, on 05/09/2009, -0/+4"How much mail do you have BalancingAct?"
Not much because it's a recent account. II'm using Googlemail btw. Both Thunderbird and Evolution were used for the same account. Whereas Evolution flies, Thunderbird was hideously slow. Note that i used both Evolution and Thunderbird to store mail, calendar, and tasks. The strange thing is that the more i added to Thunderbird the slower it becaume, almost exponentially so. With Evolution, it didn't make any difference to the speed of operation.
Note that the only reason why i'm using Evolution(and previously, Thunderbird) is to have my mail accounts, calendar, and tasks all in one place. - rif42, on 05/09/2009, -0/+4I really wish they would get this Thunderbird 3 ready soon. It has been very long time.
- Nosyn, on 05/09/2009, -0/+4@IDcool,
How is spelling Evolution: evaluation, a good thing? - Nosyn, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3You mean like Google Picasa? lol.
- LastDitchHero, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3Nice, some Linux apps that have windows counterparts look they were beaten with the ugly stick. Thanks Thunderbird team for caring.
- Sushubh, on 05/10/2009, -0/+3postbox developers have hinted that the application might not remain free forever.
the free edition might end up with ads inside it. i was pretty disappointed to hear that. - Fraize, on 05/09/2009, -2/+585 diggs and this story was front-paged?
- gavintlgold, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3@MWeather: I can explain those numbers....
Outlook is a word in the English Language as well as an application. Outlook is also a far more commonly used program (I hate to say it, but I'm sure it's true).
Evolution, as Raul said, is another english word, and the word "slow" applies perfectly well to it.
Basically, the google search numbers are only useful if you have a unique name and/or use quotes. - KAMiKAZOW, on 05/09/2009, -0/+3The roadmap for 3.0 has just been scrapped. There's supposed to be a new beta in a few days and then the team will rethink the roadmap.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 05/09/2009, -1/+4Why wasing time with slow AJAX crap that tries to mimic mail clients, but does it worse.
- dirTdogE, on 05/08/2009, -2/+4I don't think that's a common problem. However, I just recently began having a similar problem with CLOSING Thunderbird. I'm looking forward to the update.
- vtnerd, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2Very true. Sorry about that.
- Lick, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2Good job on rorr.im. Really like it.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2OpenChange has a SOC project to port its library to Thunderbird.
They hope that this project will reveal what is necessary to add to TB so that in the future TB can get additional protocols via extensions.
Personally, I think porting TB to Akonadi would reduce overall code duplication between various FOSS projects, but whatever... - evetsleep, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2In Exchange 2007, you can use web services to get access to mailbox data (the new version of Entourage uses this instead of WebDAV)...and this is further expanded in Exchange 2010. So basically all someone needs to do is write an add-on for ThunderBird that can talk to the web services.
- fatsobob, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2The only things I would change about Thunderbird would be to have native support for specific gmail features out of the box rather than having to install plugins.
- grindmygears, on 05/12/2009, -0/+2When it ain't broke, why update it?
- KAMiKAZOW, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2Fonts look strange in 2.0. Those screenshots have OK fonts.
- gandhii, on 05/10/2009, -0/+2your bad
- factsahoy, on 05/09/2009, -0/+2Thunderbird is worthless because you can't export & import filters. So you're supposed to manually type in dozens of filters on every computer you own, and maintain them all separately?
That is a huge design flaw that shouldn't have made it into version 1, let alone persisting today. - foreignwarren, on 05/10/2009, -0/+2then I guess I won't upgrade from the beta if they do decide that because it's pretty great as-is! Thanks for the heads-up on the ads....
- ill0gical, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1A more correct title would be "Thunderbird visual refresh for GNOME desktop."
- ldog, on 05/11/2009, -0/+1@gavintlgold
A Thunderbird is a brand of vehicle. Not particularly known for being slow, but it's possible without proper maintenance. - BalancingAct, on 05/08/2009, -4/+4"I don't think that's a common problem."
Just put "thunderbird slow"(without quotes) into google. I'm certainly not the only one that it applies to by any stretch of the imagination. - IDcool, on 05/10/2009, -1/+1nothing but a copy of Thunderbird with extra features
- abbathdoom, on 05/09/2009, -5/+385 diggs and the site is down?
- IDcool, on 05/09/2009, -5/+1who said writing the incorrect name is a good thing ? lol
if i didn't remember the name correctly then it's my bad - IDcool, on 05/09/2009, -5/+1hey bury is good
First, nothing from what you have said got anything related to the subject
which means that you agree with my statement and that means
im correct and you got nothing to say.:b
Second, it's not an ENGLISH CLASS but thank you for correcting my mistake - IDcool, on 05/09/2009, -8/+2evaluation better than Thunderbird
- strayasteroid, on 05/09/2009, -8/+1Why are people still wasting time on email client? This is so 2004! You get the same experience in the browser based clients now! The internet speed is going to increase only in future.
- BalancingAct, on 05/08/2009, -19/+8The problem with Thunderbird is that it is TEDIOUSLY SLOOOOOOOOOW. I endured it for about 2 weeks before using the much quicker Evolution. Whereas Evolution starts up immediately, Thunderbird used to take about 1-2 minutes in order to open fully.
It doesn't matter how pretty it can look, if it takes 1-2 minutes to open, then it simply isn't practical or usable.
