- dan.stryker, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21Now this is what Digg is good for... articles and discussions on this, not all that political crap that makes the front page every minute...
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Fedora Wins.
"When all is said and done, if I were building my TiVo replacement today, I would do it with MythDora." - SDNick484, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8In my experience, I've had the most luck just using a standard Fedora Core install and following the guide available here: http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php To be fair, it's been a while since I last tried KnoppMyth, and I'm sure it's improved since then, but at the time it had a lot of old packages and didn't do well detecting my hardware (which was a fairly common Hauppage card).
On a side note, having used Tivo (DirectTV version more specifically), MythTV & Comcast's DVR (I use both of the latter two currently), I will honestly say that Tivo provided the best user experience. MythTV definitely offers cooler features, but Tivo was just amazingly intuitive and involved virtually no setup or maintenance. Comcast's DVR sucks compared to either of the other two, but given the choice, I'd take a Tivo over setting up a /myth box again. - underthelinux, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Well that's not really a fair comparison though. He was comparing Mtyh Distros, not Media Cetner boxes.
- vemon388, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Didn't Zap2it discontinue their public time schedules?
- jostheller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I run Fedora as well... I like having the support of redhat and the Fedora community seems fairly large. I compile myth from source though... I don't use prepackaged
- jostheller, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Random comment about MythTV... I was messing with MythMusic last night and MythMusic in general sucks.
1. Why in the setup is your choice between “Low” “medium” “high” “perfect” quality? What the hell… Why not list 320kbs instead of High? What do those even stand for? In my limited experience here is what I noticed:
MP3-High-VBR = 320kbs
MP3-Medium-VBR = 320kbs
MP3-Midium-noVBR = 192kbs
2. How come they don’t have the tools built in to populate more of the ID3 field of the mp3’s on a rip? It just populates album, artist and song title
3. When you rip a DVD they have tools to go out and download DVD art to display on the screen when browsing. Why wouldn’t they do the same thing with CD’s?
It just baffles me that the TV section of Myth can be so refined... the DVD ripping/playing section can be so refined... yet the Music section almost appears as if it was written 10 years ago and hasn't been touched since. - mr1337, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7You should have tried out Linux MCE also. It offers far more functionality than just MythTV.
- Ramble, on 10/10/2007, -6/+10I don't know about you guys but MythTV is such a huge pain in the arse just to get working.
- jostheller, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5When I first started with MythTV, I knew nothing of Linux. But I knew where to ask questions if I was stuck... let me think, what was that site called... hmmmm... oh yeah... www.google.com. Seriously, all joking aside, you really don't need to be a nerd to setup a mythtv box. When something doesn't work just type in your error code in google or ask on the mythtv forum... everyone in the community is very helpful.
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Working mirror: http://www.dotcache.com/http://www.linux.com/feature/118668
- amoore260, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I have a Ubuntu Mythtv box it works well but, was a real pain too set up. Mythtv and Linux MCE have lost touch about what their projects are all about. All most users want is an easy way to view media. I have been keeping an eye on Elisa. Elisa is an easy to use Media Center that some what resembles AppleTV. Elisa still in early development but shows a lot of promise.
- jostheller, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5You are being ridiculous... So if I am not going to contribute source, then I don't have the right to point out weakness in the application? I am a Hardware engineer, and I specifically went that direction because my coding is IMHO inadequate compared to a lot of the code I see on the net. Sure I could write something to get the job done, but it wouldn't be pretty, and no one would want it checked into the trunk. Honestly... you don't want just anyone coding for your application.
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I don't think offering a Windows alternative is a good choice. The reviewer is comparing Linux based options.
- BRODEL, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I dugg you up because I understand what you mean. I hid the political stories long ago though. If you don't like seeing it, you can disable it.. :)
- mooninite, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4MythTV was originally TV PVR only and the DVD/Music tools didn't exist until last year. The music section is relatively new...
- jostheller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3How about you are being dugg down because you are not commenting on the topic... Instead of criticizing the users, why not add something meaningful to the conversation about MythTV
- hadees, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3There is a learning curve to MythTV but it is worth the reward.
- dadood, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Ok then please help me *google* getting a ATI 9600 AIW vid card to use the ATI VGA to component dongle so that I can have 1080i output resolution on linux MythTV... yea, didn't think so. And don't tell me my vid card sucks cause its old and its an ATI because it works perfectly on WinXP using GBPVR, SageTV, MediaPortal, and Yahoo! Go TV.
- badassninja, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3A very useful guide. Thank you goes out to the man that installed all 3 just to tell us what the thought the ups and downs of all 3 were. But I have to agree with Mr. Leet above who posted above me, Linux MCE is pretty bad ass, she should have installed and tested that as well, i think he would have ended up picking that.
- MrSketch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yep, but http://schedulesdirect.org is up and running to fill the void.
- jostheller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Here are some alternatives to schedule direct. Not sure how well they work.

- columbusgeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They all seem to have their problems. GBPVR is nice but needs some "growing up time" since the code for the interface changed. Not all the plugins have caught up yet.
MythTV on every level is annoying. I have tried all the listed ones as weell as LinuxMCE and really felt let down.
I have 2 TWC boxs and use them remotly via IRblasters and run a fatty DVi cable to my tv upstairs. The combination of all this makes setup of any of these programs far from easy.
I am using VMC right now, simply because it handles my dual pvr150's and cable boxes with virtually no setup at all. It has its flaws, but it works.
(I hate MS for the record, my media center is the only PC in my home) - hadees, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I prefer just running Gentoo and installing mythtv with emerge. You get a really streamlined system that is easy to update.
- daskatzsocrates, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2yes they did, or will discontinue it on the 1st of September.
The replacement Schedules Direct is pretty much the same thing except you get to pay $5 a month for it. - colinnwn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They discontinue their Zap2it Labs distribution system for hobbyists Sept 1 http://labs.zap2it.com/. They still run their own listing services at http://www.zap2it.com/ and provide redistributable listings for profit to other companies under Tribune Media Services. TMS has come to an agreement with a soon to be non-profit organization headed by some MythTV guys to run a service similar to the Labs. It is http://www.schedulesdirect.org/
- Gregd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Tech articles FTW!
- dgrant, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I would go with Gentoo all the way. Tons of flexibility for using mixed versions of things. With other distros if mythtv goes from 0.20 to 0.30 or something, you might end up having to upgrade a ton of packages which might break your system. With gentoo upgrade as little or as much as you want.
- Antialias, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes, it ends in September, but there is a company providing schedule subscriptions(the same data Zap2it provided) for $15/3 months subscription, www.schedulesdirect.com. $5 isn't too much to pay to have DVR funtionality, plus the customization and configuration that comes with MythTV that you don't get with TIVO or other proprietary solutions.
Plus the other free options involve scraping web pages for the scheduling info. That can break anytime a site changes their design and layout which can be really anoying if you rely on your DVR for all your television watching. - SpacemanSpiff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Comcast has partnered with Tivo to provide the interface for their DVRs. Hopefully, Tivo will do the guide on their HD boxes as well, not just DVRs. I hate Comcast's interface.
- jostheller, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3My sense of entitlement? what the hell are you talking about. I merely mentioned a short coming of MythTV as a whole. I wasn't demanding that anyone fix it, nor did I send the email to the MythTV user list. I would be willing to bet you are not even a developer so where the F do you get off? Seriously, take a deep breath and relax a little...sheesh
- colinnwn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2People in North America are just getting "forced" into paying for listings as the demise of zap2itlabs comes Sept 1. To be fair, all free PVRs with guide capability have this problem. It will be interesting to see if the DIY PVR market stays viable having to either pay, or switch to free but inconvenient listing alternatives.
The main alternative would be screenscraping the listings from one of the many web based TV listing services. MythTV has plugins to do this, I believe almost everyone outside of North America is doing so now. But this is much more processor intensive and uses up a lot more bandwidth for you and the provider. When the provider tinkers with their website, the plugin must be updated to understand those changes. And those providers are more likely to make changes as their bandwidth gets chewed up by what they see as bots. - jostheller, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3BS. I have been running Myth for years. MuthMusic has been around since at least .14
- enginbeering, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Hell, I'm all about both the political and tech articles. What I hate are those chain-email posts.
- jeffeb3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Maybe you should buy a programming book and get started, or at least crack open that dusty wallet of yours and start supporting the program you love so much...
- hockey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I dugg you down because in this instance you are the psychotic weenie.
- Ramble, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As someone who used Gentoo amny many times that's not a new concept for me. However, once I got past all the errors while compiling (which the reason for could not be found anywhere) I then had to set it up to find the correct hardware, search for TV and set up my remote.
After all of that it didn't have the features I wanted.
I now use Media Center in Vista, simply because it's the best one I've ever used. - jostheller, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Mythtv now costs money too... well perhaps I should say the TV guide schedule for MythTV now has a monthly fee
- hockey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Do yourself a favor and don't presume that just because you couldn't get MythTV working that other's should ignore it also.
Myth works perfectly for me. Just my 2c. - gr4yscale, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I love MythTV and everything about it but you're right. MythMusic SUCKS
- toomanyhandles, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3gbpvr (www.gbpvr.com) kicks tail on MythTV or SageTV. and it is also free.
- SDNick484, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Despite having run Gentoo for a couple years now on my laptop, I still opted to stick with Fedora Core 6 for my current MythTV box. The reason being is because I want to keep the Myth box as quiet and low powered as possible; you have to keep in mind that this system is always on. I used an Via Epia mobo & C3 cpu which draws 7W average and 25W max; all the heavy lifting for the video is done on the Hauppauge card. I couldn't even imagine compiling a full OS on my myth box; the Epia C3 is like a P3 800MHz and would take days to do anything. I am aware you can use pre-compiled packages in Gentoo, but at that point I'd question why I'm using Gentoo in the first place. I know you could cross compile using distcc, but again there'd be a lot of overhead in setting this up, and I'd need a second PC running whenever I wanted to upgrade packages.
The only time I'd consider Gentoo was if I already had a workstation I left always on. I do admit though, upgrading Myth on Gentoo is a lot simpler (I installed the package on my laptop because it's one of my frontends for it). I prefer portage over yum, but not enough to justify running a full blown machine just so I can keep my software up to date. - noisymime, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1To all the people above who are advising the OP to stop whinging and start coding.... That's exactly what I did about about 3 months ago. The result is Gloss, a drop-in replacement for the Myth Frontend that uses OpenGL 2d from the ground up. It also includes a slideshow feature similar to iPhotos which automatically plays music over the top. Its pretty early on in its life, but check it out at http://gloss-mc.googlecode.com
- TechnoRabbit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Um, dumbass, I think he was speaking for himself.
- RyeBrye, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2No, it would be like comparing cars and not including Kit cars because you don't want to include crap people have to spend months building on their own. Linux MCE is not prime time. Get over it.
- funchords, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The article's site (www.linux.com) won't load, and the digg mirror missed it, but the Coral Cache has it currently:

http://www.linux.com.nyud.net:8080/feature/118668 - Nerevar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Just a random thought I've had several times: It'd be awesome if they'd port over XBMC to Linux and perhaps add a TV tuning module to it. XBMC is a great project especially coupled with the MC360 skin.
- tmalloy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1gb-pvr is free as in beer, not free as in speech.
- Nerevar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I checked out Elisa, it looked pretty neat. Right now the icons they're using look like crap though. And it looks like gstreamer is the exclusive backend for it, I'd rather be able to choose (being a KDE user I'd want to use XINE).
It's a step in the right direction as far as accessibility goes though - SDNick484, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I already spend, "endless hours geeking it up," on my laptop which runs Gentoo; for TV related stuff I'd rather it be simple and intuitive.
