- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+104Hahha, Now I need to label "This is actually a server" on the xbox in my office. They'll never know it's really an xbox.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+97As an IT tech, I would feel raped if some little 11 year old bastard took my server and started playing Halo on it.
- SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+73Capitalizing The First Letter In Every Word Makes Me Sound Important
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+62So, according to this manager, it's OK to take "spare" equipment home for personal use? That's great, because I manage a fleet of vehicles and I could use another car.
- bilbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+52What about the fact that the manager just decided to steal what he believed was one of the IT staff's Xbox.
- randomvictim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47It is if you use cromwell. Cromwell = legal. How you go about installing cromwell bios... can be done many ways =).
- phatpat88, on 10/12/2007, -5/+47that guy is an idiot, he took what was not his, without permission...
- cgranade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41Yes.
- anonymonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32That new manager should be fired. Not only does he lack integrity, but he also knows nothing about computers.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Yeah, actually, it's completely legal to buy a mod chip, install a cromwell bios on it, and format the hard drive to Linux.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30And BTW, why did the manager just take the Xbox from a server room, it wasn't hooked up to a TV but it sure did have an Ethernet cable coming out of the back.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29well the guys boss took it and gave it to his "11 yr old bastard" son to play with, but i know what you mean
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30A friend and I played Halo 2 when it was leaked 26 days early (albeit in French) in AP Computer Science when I wanted to show my technology teacher the abilities of a modded Xbox. Fun stuff.

- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20come on, he was taking it home so his kid could you play it, i don't think this guy is too bright nor cares about others things much.
- randomvictim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Actually gentoox and xebian(modified linux distros for xbox) don't require you to reformat the harddrive =).
- jpt62089, on 10/12/2007, -13/+30Why do people spell it X-Box???? It's Xbox people! no - in it! Sorry, it just bugs the crap out of me when people spell it like that!
- Denelson83, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17'Five weeks into the "Web pages for Philosophy students" class the excrement encountered the rotary cooling device...'
Guess the guy who wrote this article wasn't permitted to write "the ***** hit the fan", eh?
/only pointing that out for those who didn't understand it at first - Genma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16um yeah I don't think the word "server" means what you think it means. you could properly associate the word "server" with a 486 if you wanted. as long as it serves data.
stupid ***** manager with no respect for other people's xboxes, justice is served. - WolfwoodX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Yeah really, they should press charges.
administrator: Where is our server?
manager: My son was in town for the weekend and I took the whole rackmount home so he could watch porn. Ha, Jimmy loves that porn.
administrator: WTF!?! Why would you do that? Our entire network is offline!
manager: I never saw anyone using it.. so I took it home.
administrator: It was the central server where every computer on campus connected!
manager: Isn't server just a fancy name for computer?
And didn't like 80% of the National Guards information get stolen because a moron took it home unauthorized? Anyone who takes any device from an office without permission should be fired and charged with theft. - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Also, it's possible to load the Cromwell bios through exploits in a few games. Either should be entirely legal
- posure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Many modchips even come with Cromwell-based bioses preloaded since they are 100% legal (no MS code). Great story though. I suppose given that they use an Xbox to save money in the first place, they wouldn't be willing to move the hardware to a case that looks like a computer.
- Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13If I saw that, I would have probably tried to play Halo.
It wasn't a bad assumption to make that it was being used as an XBox, although taking it home for his son to use was probably a little too much. - Beanis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14It is a nice story, but I don't think this actually occurred. First look at the top, under the guys name, notice: "Hyperbole, Embellishment". Also the University isn't named, and a having separate web class just for philosophy students are both very suspicious without noticing the words at the top. So you don't need to get mad at the (probably fictional) manager.
- ummagummas08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11What a dick administrator. Even if it WAS the staff's Xbox he has no right to just take it. What the hell was he thinking?? 'Oh, it looks like the staff use this, well I want my son to be happy, and I dont want to spend any money, I think i'll just take it home' Server or not, that's a ***** dick move on his part.
- Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Are universities that strapped for cash?
- lame_duck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14You would think he made enought money to buy one.
- Scooley01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"the excrement encountered the rotary cooling device" has got to be the most creative way of saying that...
- twollamalove, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10No no, if you buy an Xbox and buy no games, Microsoft is losing out.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12randomracoon,
Actually, it's only illigal to use a modified Microsoft bios. I wish you would have spent the time to read the previous comments. - chess007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Taking things that don't belong to you is never a good idea.
What I want to know is, if you see a babe in the server room is it harrassment to say,"Nice rack?" :) - thegsa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Works For Me.
- cosmicr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I agree sounds fake and very inplausible. I mean wouldnt he wonder why there was a) no tv b) no controllers c) power turned on 24/7 d) an ethernet cable in the back.
- brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12It's to-prove a-point. Doi.
- tehgooch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually, with a cromwell bios flashed onto the xbox it won't play xbox games (unless you're using a fancy mod-chip, which I bet they were not).
- adamthebastard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I managed to pick up a used xbox for $20 AUD. The only problem was the dvd drive was broke. Moded and running Linux and Apache (or lighttpd) it would have made a VERY cheap and capable webserver.
- Petrarch1603, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Is this article fake? No university was cited? Seems kind of made-up, i'm just saying
- spydabyte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5A comical tale from the computing world to the illiterate powers that be.
- whackaxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well it's thin on the details, that's for sure.
what I love about people posting drunk is that they always feel the need to point it out ;) - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Actually, as long as there's a game disc in there, it'll still run games. Heck, I don't know this for a fact, but I'd be willing to bet that you can even run XBMC on there.
- ronaldb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@WolfwoodX:
I can just picture this conversation - interestingly enough the manager is replaced by the PHB from Dilbert... :) - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow, ok, I realize where I went wrong in my comment. I wasn't calling the people of Digg stupid, but the guy. What I was trying to say was that if it was actually serving data (like it says in the article), wouldn't the exec have to unplug both of those things, meaning he should have thought about it before unplugging either one. The exec was stupid, not you guys.
- thegsa, on 10/12/2007, -14/+18He Should Be Fired
Why:
The xBox Was In A Server Room, The Ethernet Cord WAs Connected, And It Was In A RACK! - whitehatlurker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is right out of BOfH! How many times has Simon gone storming into the Boss' office when something goes missing only to find he's made off with it?
- brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The website is down because someone removed the ad.
- cybersamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3dont worry, none of us will probably ever see a babe in the server room.....
- dotcom101010, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The power of an XBOX i love it
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7As far as I am aware, you can do anything to your Xbox so long as your modifications do not allow you to break copyright, i.e. play copied Xbox games, store Xbox games on the HDD, etc. Microsoft aren't losing out if you turn your Xbox into a Linux server.
I guess a thorough reading of the EULA would tell us though. - vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This article shows a fundamental problem of turnover in the IT sector, particularly at colleges. Good article, that guy sucks for just assuming people were playing xbox at work.
- snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"You can probably guess what happens next."
That's pretty much saying "Don't bother to read this article." In which case, I won't. No digg. -
