- Loonacy, on 04/21/2009, -0/+142I decompile codes all the time! It's not so hard, you just have to reroute the primary coupling to the power converter and then reverse the polarity of the ion drive.
- xero69, on 04/21/2009, -0/+90Don't forget to reboot the flux capacitor when you're done.
- xero69, on 04/21/2009, -2/+53Using Linux is going to give your IT support staff sleepless nights? Pfffff please. Sleepless nights are sometimes part of IT support anyway. Train your support staff instead of giving that same money to Microsoft.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 04/21/2009, -0/+46Ironically, I read this article on a Lenovo S10 Netbook... running Fedora 10.
Seems to be running fine. Would Lenovo's "Worldwide Competitive Analyst" like me to come over and show him how it works? - chivesandbonbon, on 04/21/2009, -0/+43Seriously though...why do they always need to eject the core?
- merky1, on 04/21/2009, -3/+42Wow, the article description could use a re-write. Basically its a blogger commenting on an ill conceived blog from a Lenovo "expert."
Article summary, Lenovo is claiming linux is too hard so they can drop support for it. They figure since the linux hackers don't need sanctioned support anyways, why bother upsetting the MSFT gravy train. - Wargala, on 04/21/2009, -1/+36When this baby hit's 88mph, you're gonna see some serious *****.
- Loonacy, on 04/21/2009, -1/+33I knew i forgot someth^@&*!\
- sigmaman2, on 04/21/2009, -1/+31"Okay, I finished re-comboobulating the energy-motron...or something..."
- Bicep, on 04/21/2009, -2/+29I love the way this article ends... absolutely love it!! Makes me want to do something about the problem mentioned in the article, hmmm who am I gonna write a letter to today? Thanks!
- PrettyBoyFloyd, on 04/21/2009, -1/+25From the linked article, Matt Kohut is quoted as saying “From a vendor perspective, Linux is very hard to support because there are so many different versions out there: do we have Eudora, do we have SUSE, do we have Turbo Max? Those are all different enough that, well, if people buy Linux preloaded from us, we have to fully support everything they own."
He doesn't even know the difference between Eudora and SuSE, and assumes that both products are Linux distributions! And Turbo Max? What the hell is that? I tried installing Turbolinux years ago, and it sucked, so I used Red Hat instead. I did a Google search for TurboMax and got hundreds of hits about water heaters and Irwin Drill Bit sets, but nothing at all even remotely connected with Linux.
Perhaps I'll send my resume to Lenovo. They definitely need some technical assistance when it comes to supporting Open Source software. - falafelkiosken, on 04/21/2009, -0/+21have you decompiled it?
- JQP123, on 04/21/2009, -15/+34The users are idiots, the hardware manufacturers are idiots, MS and other proprietary software vendors are idiots --- seems like the only people who aren't idiots are the 2% of the market who use Linux.
- jdh20201, on 04/21/2009, -2/+20Why are companies so resistant to Linux? I've had an install of Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my Netbook for about a month now and have had no problems. You would think something that is free would be accepted as a way to cut costs.
- yevkasem, on 04/21/2009, -3/+20let's be clear: linux got along fine for 10+ years without having any major vending offering "support", and we'll continue to be quite fine without them. why? because the linux community develops linux because THEY WANT IT, not so companies can profit. i believe linus would say something like "if you don't want to use linux, then we don't want you to use it."
- PrettyBoyFloyd, on 04/21/2009, -0/+16There's no reason you can't roll out a standardized Linux distribution the same way you have a standardized Windows image. Ever hear of Kickstart? Linux is no more frightening than Windows, and at least on my Linux machines, I don't have to worry about viruses, spyware or trojans. Keeping malware off of my Windows machines takes up a whole lot more of my time than supporting Linux desktops and servers.
- xero69, on 04/21/2009, -0/+15Some of the smarter businesses I have visited are running Ubuntu on desktops and Asterisk for their VOIP phone systems.
- sloppychris, on 04/21/2009, -0/+14The author was only referring to one user and one hardware manufacturer as an idiot.
- milkmage, on 04/22/2009, -0/+13AND BRING ME THE HYDROSPANNERS!
- Phocion55, on 04/21/2009, -0/+13Wow. The Lenovo blog entries read a lot like pure flamebait. Doesn't have that standard corporate image feel to it. Not sure I'd want to do business with someone with such blatant biases.
- wakingrufus, on 04/21/2009, -0/+13the worst part:
“If I need to go to a website and download another piece of code ... it’s just too hard."
ummm.... that would be an argument FOR linux (repositories) b/c that is what you have to do to do anything in windows. - costumemaker, on 04/21/2009, -0/+12I totally know multiple operating systems! I know Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows XP! They are so vastly different!
/s - shannondoko, on 04/21/2009, -0/+11I can't tell you how many computers I've formatted with windows, only to find that it was lacking several key drivers, namely network card drivers.
How am I supposed to download drivers for the network card, if I can't access the network.
This article sums up my argument pretty well.
http://www.tannerhelland.com/technology-commentary ... - yellowbean1, on 04/21/2009, -0/+11From the linked article, Mr. Kohut would tell you that you are running "Eudora." As opposed to SuSE or "Turbo Max" (WTF?).
- cubicledrone, on 04/21/2009, -0/+9"Why are companies so resistant to Linux?"
Because middle managers are incompetent *****. - Memnochxx, on 04/21/2009, -0/+9"Fine" as in the quality of the product. Market share has absolutely nothing to do with it.
- pinchduck, on 04/21/2009, -0/+9I own a Lenovo T61 that came with SUSE on it. I installed ubuntu on it instead, but that is beside the point. I've been happy with their quality and service. My one complaint isn't Lenovo's fault: the Intel 965 graphics driver is 100% open source and it sucks. All I want to do is play OpenArena and flightgear on my PC but it can't manage that. Hopefully the Intel guys will come up with a better driver soon. When I saw that it was open source, I drifted immediately to it without realizing that it is also half-baked. Oh well. Lenovo may decide that Linux is not for them, which is fine, I'll find another vendor next time.
- dattaway, on 04/21/2009, -3/+11He may not like the widescreen format, but I like it. I can have two terminals side by side for easy comparison of code.
Linux too hard? I must be dumb, because I had a problem getting Windows to work since 1990. What he may not understand might be perfection for someone else. - benologist, on 04/22/2009, -2/+10I think "salesman" might be a more appropriate choice of words for the Lenovo guy... that's the word my spider-senses are giving me when I read his job description - "For several years, Matt has traveled around the world helping customers, sales reps, and business partners understand the Lenovo product lines."
- cubicledrone, on 04/21/2009, -1/+9"The battle for the corporate desktop is over, Powerpoint won."
Fixed. - Khast, on 04/21/2009, -0/+8common misconception.
Of course that is what Microsoft and Apple want everyone to think. What is so ***** hard about using a GUI like Gnome or KDE? Sure the command line can be a little tricky, but for the average user, most things can be done with the GUI in Linux.
Since I installed Linux on one of my older machines, I actually find it just as easy as Windows to do the same tasks. - oobuntu, on 04/22/2009, -0/+7What an embarrassment the guy is to his company. This windows troll doesn't know the first thing about Linux. Even reading a simple wikipedia article about Linux would correct this kind of ignorance.
- leandrotami, on 04/21/2009, -0/+7I have been using Linux distributions in my EeePC 4G since almost a year and a half and I'm pretty satisfied with it. I think this 'expert' is stuck in a opinion based on a very old personal experience (perhaps 10 years ago?)
This article also contradicts those who claim that ARM is the future of netbooks, which would mean that those computers wouldn't be able to run Vista and therefore would end up using Linux. - waspbr, on 04/22/2009, -0/+7Eudora? did the guy mean Fedora? cos AFAIK there is not distro called Eudora, just one called FEDORA.
Eudora is an email client, it is not an operating system
This clearly shows that the guy knows exactly what he is talking about - ArthurSucks, on 04/21/2009, -0/+7That's okay. Linux is not targeted at users like you. For my uses it's the fastest and easiest OS to use.
- nurbsenvi, on 04/21/2009, -6/+12Lenovo name sounds cheap.
- Elranzer, on 04/21/2009, -0/+6Lenovo makes a damn fine netbook (IdeaPad S10) and Linux runs fantastic on it. I don't see what the problem is.
This "analyst" at Lenovo should really be fired. - quarando, on 04/22/2009, -1/+7Spoken like a true Microsoft dinosaur. Won't listen to anybody that mentions Linux and will cling to XP as the holy grail of the OS market until he retires. Hopefully that day comes sooner rather than later.
- tama00, on 04/21/2009, -2/+8This is a joke right? Lenovo makes the best linux compatible computers!
- Afroman, on 04/21/2009, -0/+6http://s10lenovo.com/viewforum.php?f=42&sid=0a ...
Whole forum on getting S10 with Splashtop working. - Elranzer, on 04/21/2009, -3/+9You've probably never heard of Thinkpad, haven't you?
- Loonacy, on 04/22/2009, -0/+6I've done that. I booted up a live linux cd and downloaded the drivers, then rebooted into Windows to installed them.
- inactive, on 04/22/2009, -0/+6I hate it when companies get it wrong like this. Linux is great for small devices like this, and it's really easy to use these days. The only real reason for not using it is if you have programs you want to use that only run on windows... and many of those can be run using wine. The only reason I stick with windows on my main computer is that I love to play video games.
- Memnochxx, on 04/21/2009, -1/+7Mac wasn't mentioned in the article, why would he include them?
- subxero37, on 04/22/2009, -0/+6I am so sick of widescreen monitors. Who thought 1280x800 was a good idea? An 800-pixel-tall screen seems very cramped after about 10 minutes of use. My desktop LCDs are 5:4 (1280x1024) and I will wait and wait until they're all toast before going widescreen. I am primarily a programmer and I do lots of typing. Having 50% of my screen taken up by a massive white, empty space is not my thing.
TVs and media is a different story: widescreen is acceptable here, although most TV programming is not really adapted for that size and aspect ratio yet. - Elranzer, on 04/21/2009, -0/+6The driver for the Intel graphics card COMES from Intel, that is to say, they've assisted writing the open-source driver and they do this for all of their hardware (network cards, etc). Intel are pretty good supporters for Linux, actually.
The problem is just that the Intel graphics HARDWARE sucks. No driver is going to fix that. - quarando, on 04/22/2009, -0/+6Really, you've never met anybody who has dedicated their career to collecting Microsoft certifications and resists anything non-Microsoft. They seem to be quite abundant.
- yevkasem, on 04/22/2009, -0/+5i've never heard a kernel developer singing about "the year of linux", and if you thing some random digg (whining bitches, as you put it) story represents the linux community, you're wrong. most of the articles submitted to digg about "the year of linux" are from some pc world idiot who is clueless.
- leamanc, on 04/22/2009, -1/+6Linux compiles on old Chevy trucks now? Sweeeeeet!
- Jeezoflip, on 04/21/2009, -0/+5i run ubuntu on my t61. :)
