- RandaII, on 11/29/2008, -9/+20I don't even know why people even bother to post about alpha stuff. Oh its ubuntu must put it on digg. But if you really want to know fedora 10 is light years ahead of ubuntu even the 9.04 alpha.
- scilec, on 11/29/2008, -5/+13How is Fedora "light years" ahead of Ubuntu? I use both distros and while Fedora tends to be a little more bleeding edge, Ubuntu tends to be more stable and has superior "out of the box" hardware compatibility. I'm not arguing with you here, I'd just like to hear your opinions.
- cmost, on 11/30/2008, -0/+8Okay, so you couldn't get your wireless working so Fedora 10 is *****?!?!? You're an idiot. You also claim Fedora 10 brings nothing new...I beg to differ. Try these:
1) Faster Boot Process via the revolutionary new 'Plymouth'
2) New Artwork and Themes (Ubuntu hasn't had a new theme EVER!!!)
3) Faster and Better Printing via improved printer management tools (which Ubuntu will steal for its next release)
4) Better WebCam Support
5) Virtualization which gives users the ability to manage virtual hosts and storage remotely;
6) Remix Capability (Roll Your Own Distro)
7) A revamped audio system that uses less power (which Ubuntu will also probably steal!)
8) An Intelligent Packaging System Interface (PackageKit)
9) Fedora Community which boasts many more users than Ubuntu's (and probably a helluva lot more knowledgeable at that.)
10) Fedora Spins
The release also bundles in OpenOffice 3.0 (final; not a beta,) the most recent edition of the highly acclaimed open-source productivity suite.
If you're going to knock Fedora, please know what the hell you're talking about. - Leekzor, on 11/29/2008, -8/+15Who here still uses Windows XP?
- Shadowman, on 11/29/2008, -0/+7The "spatial" window behaviour has been the default in Nautilus for a long time, even though few seem to like it. It looks like the setting to change it is in the same place it has always been. Changing to browser windows is one of the first things I do on a new install.
- zarque, on 11/30/2008, -0/+6ive tried running WOW on both winxp and linux,
for some reason it ran unbelievably slow in windows, so much i couldnt play it. linux runs it very nicely if you configure it up properly. - mcrules, on 11/30/2008, -0/+6Red hat is corporate, fedora is not.
- shadowman99, on 11/29/2008, -5/+10My first thoughts on Fedora 10
* GDM logon screen doesn't allow root login. I had to dig into the gdm config file to enable. Fedora changed this without telling anyone.
* Audio only worked for root user until I disabled SELinux and removed the alsa-pulseaudio-plugin. Alsa-pulseadio-plugin also caused segfaults for Xine media player.
* Compiz Emerald themes appear to be locked. Unable to add new themes. I'll have to removed fedora's compiz and DL a real version.
* I hate the default window behaviours in Nautilus (new window pops every time you open a subdirectory) and the settings to change this have been hidden.
* KDE has a lot more going for it than Gnome is this release. I've been a gnome user since Redhat 6 or 7. Probably not much longer.
Now that I've fixed the little crap I can finally make myself at home in my freshly installed system. I might need to go Ubuntu next time. - mooninite, on 11/29/2008, -1/+6I ran WoW on Linux for over a year just fine. Even used Voice Chat in Linux (Ventrilo and the in-game voice chat). I dropped WoW though and got a life: on Digg.
- weizbox, on 11/30/2008, -0/+4Works just fine for me. I also have a higher FPS in Linux than with Vista. Tons of guides on the topic, just Google it :)
- tackle, on 11/30/2008, -1/+5Meanwhile, Open-SuSe 11.1 RC1 came out with pure awesomeness.
- inactive, on 11/29/2008, -1/+4I know what you mean.
Not every new thing about Ubuntu has to be dugg. I have Ubuntu, but I'm not obsessed with the updates or the new alpha stages. It will come out when it comes out.
As for Fedora, I'll have to try that out one of these days. - eqtitan, on 11/29/2008, -1/+4I do until linux can run World of Warcraft smoothly
- westyvw, on 11/30/2008, -1/+4Well long time users of OSX are seeing the light. They are tired of Jobs double speak on DRM and want a computer that lets them do what they want to do.

and

Much as i like OSX, I prefer to do what I want on my computer. I dont care for Ubuntu, its too slow and fragile for me, but when big names in the biz start moving you see improvements in the OS as others try and fill their vocal and heard complaints. - drag, on 11/30/2008, -0/+3Ya. Fedora 10 is "a winnar" in terms of Linux distributions for fairly advanced users. It's much more stable and usable then Fedora 9 when that thing was released. Lot less problems.
The killer feature for me is the 3G support in Network-manager PLUS the ability to share internet access among many machines. My workmates and me like to go to 'offsite meetings' with our laptops in order to get work done away from other people from work (in bars), so the ability for one of us to easily hook our phone up and create a ad-hoc network is very very cool.
This was tested on a old mini-itx machine with a Atheros wifi. No madwifi, this is with just open source drivers.
* Connect the smart phone to Linux machine with USB cable
* Select the phone when it appears in network-manager. It dials and connects quickly.
* Go back to network manager and create a ad-hoc network.
That's it. Your done. Very easy and we didn't have to install drivers or anything. It all 'just worked'. We connected 3 other Linux machines and a Windows XP machine to it over wireless and were able to share the 3G uplink quite easily. Very slick. Now I don't know if it will work that well for other people.. we had a popular phone model, more obscure or very proprietary phones will probably have more problems, but it's still slick.
The other very nice feature for Fedora is the LXDE... Lightweight X-Windows Desktop Environment. It's a windows-isque desktop environment that is designed to work well on the types of machines you see in developing countries. It's very light on the resources and is quite usable considering that it hasn't been around for that long and is so light-weight. It can run on a machine with only 129MBbl of RAM, and very comfortably on a machine with 256MB.. compared to 512MB for a basic Gnome environment. It uses much less resources then even XFCE does.
So if you have a slower machine or you want to make your fast machine a little bit faster then that is something you can check out. It doesn't try to be anything weird or fancy or whatnot.. just your basic desktop system that everybody is familiar with. - cmost, on 11/30/2008, -1/+4I swear, Ubuntu fanboys will find any way they can to force their beloved distribution into everyone else's party! Fedora 10 was released this week and sports myriad of new features not yet found in any other distribution. The Ubuntu boys, however, feel the need to announce that the pre pre pre pre pre alpha of "the next big one", the one that promises to turn water into wine, the Jaunty Jackelope was also released. Gee, I think GM put a few bolts on their 2012 models too! Come on guys, let the Fedora community enjoy their well deserved 15 minutes in the limelight.
- izelpii, on 11/30/2008, -0/+3I use Linux at work, school (grad comp sci) and in my personal laptop.
- ScottyMcBaggs, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2Mehh, I've had mixed experiences with Ubuntu, like it naming sata device nodes hd*, creating a stupid condition whereby MAX_HW_IFS (which is set to 4) make it so I can't use all my drives. Fedora did the right thing and named them like scsi nodes, overcoming the need to recompile the kernel to tweak one config option. Another plus, RPM. Anyone who thinks rpm sucks doesn't know how to use it. Here come the ubuntards to bury me!
- Vadi0, on 11/29/2008, -1/+3I gave Fedora 10 a try - it seemed less polished to me. I wasn't impressed with PackageKit either.
Probably just me though - SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2Hm, my sound worked perfectly in my fresh install. In fact, pulseaudio saw both my audio cards and let me output to both them (something even Windows won't let me do). No Xine issues of any kind either. I'm not sure why things would have been different for you. Go figure.
I've also already imported several Emerald themes from Gnome-Look.org without issue. So I'm not sure what you mean when you say they "appear to be locked."
Why are you logging into root anyhow? That could be contributing to some of these other issues if you are installing and configuring software while logged in as root.
I agree with about Nautilus opening up new windows. Kind of annoying, but I've grown used to it overtime so I guess I don't really think about it any more. :/
The only issue I ran into was an NVidia one that had to do with my monitor not being recognized by the driver, but the folks over at fedorforum were very helpful. I had it worked out in short order. It's too bad NVidia is lacking on something so fundamental in Linux (the monitor works fine in Windows with their driver).
As far as switching to Ubuntu goes. I tried it, and personally found it wasn't really geared toward my liking of exceptional fiddling. Then again, perhaps I'm just crazy. :-P - cabazorro, on 11/29/2008, -1/+3I tried Fedora 10 Live CD on my DELL D620 Laptop JUST to check if they have finally fixed the suspend-hibernate modes and NO_CAN_DO! The OS goes to sleep and won't recover after that. Then I tried on an ASUS Dual Core PC and same problem, SUSPEND and HIBERNATE does not work. It does not work on F8, F9 and now F10. I'm a Linux developer but I sure wonder when the Linux Kernel will start putting planet earth first and start making the OS Energy Star compliant. All development boxes at work stay on 24-7-365 because nobody dares to jack with the so-called Linux power saving features. Big disappointment.
- mxcl, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2At least justify your opinion, oh "must post because I'm irritated by trivial *****" person.
- turk24, on 11/29/2008, -1/+3at work i have to use it for about 80% of the stuff i do, the other 20% i can do in OSX or whatever flavor i linux i have at the time.
got to love Zterm for OSX - ScottyMcBaggs, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1It takes about 5-10 minutes to learn enough about selinux to fix these kinds of problems without disabling it completely.
- drag, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1Next time, especially if your using Linux professionally, purchase hardware that has OEM support for Linux.
There really isn't any excuse. For home users trying out Linux this is one thing, but if your using it professionally you just to have to know better that installing a OS that is not supported by your OEM is a recipe for disaster.
I have a Dell 1420n that I purchased with Ubuntu pre-installed and now it has Fedora 10. I suspend-to-ram that thing a dozen times a day, literally. (I carry it around work quite a bit and every time I close the lid it goes to suspend). It works flawlessly.
It helps a lot that it's a pure-intel machine (intel cpu, intel chipset, intel video, intel wifi), but every aspect of the hardware is supported with zero configuration in Fedora 10. 3D acceleration, power management, wireless, multimedia buttons, speakers, etc etc. The whole ten yards.
You can't just get this by purchasing some random Windows-only hardware and expecting it to work. It CAN, but it's a luck. It almost always is going to require some work. OEM perform testing and have much more resources at hand and relationships with BIOS makers and whatnot that you just don't get when your a home user. I am not saying that OEM support is a panacea, but it is very helpful to have somebody who is responsible for getting Linux to work that has a relationship with the hardware like that. - n0ia, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1I haven't noticed the issue with Nautilus opening windows in new windows, but then again, I just upgraded from Fedora 9 to 10 and already had it set to not open in additional windows. I also haven't had a chance to check out the tabbed browsing in Nautilus.
Logging into Gnome as root isn't really a big deal to me. I usually do root "stuff" from a terminal anyhow, but I can see how that would be annoying.
I think Fedora 6, 7, or 8 had an issue with sound at one time, but it was quite the opposite of what you experienced. It would work for root only.
And to Junior612: To some people, spending a few minutes to get something to work isn't a big deal. Sometimes with a brand new release there are things that aren't going to work 100% correctly on every single configuration. And while they keep releasing updates, for the majority of people, they do get it right. At least they don't have to keep offering downgrades to a previous version to satisfy people. Not only that, but they also have security patches rolled out in a reasonable time frame unlike some other operating systems as well.
Obviously Linux doesn't work for some people. They either don't have the capacity to figure it out, or they don't care to figure it out. And that's fine, it's personal choice. But just because it sucks to you doesn't mean it sucks to everyone else. - FTAFILESn3, on 03/02/2009, -0/+1Thanks for this useful link.

Have a great day :) - izelpii, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Linux is like having the possibility to assemble or pimp your car.
Linux can be an old well tuned mustang, a flashy new porsche, a horrible not working hyundai... or a custom electric car... better than mac vw bug or microsoft pontiac aztec.
Think that all the fastest machines on earth run Linux. Think also that most (if not all) grad comp sci students run Linux too. Think that comp science research is commonly done in a Linux/Unix environment. Most OS books talk about UNIX.
Linux is stable as a rock on many Thinkpads and Dells, and all hardware works without any need of special drivers.
But if you install Linux on your Asian knowckoff "el cheapo" laptop, I expect you to have some issues. - shadowman99, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1>> "Who here still uses Windows XP?"
Only XP as a Virtualbox image. I need to VPN into my employer occasionally, and they only allow Windows to connect. My company's Citrix server doesn't know it's only a virtual machine. - cjnkns, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1I have been using Ubuntu and now Fedora 10 on my laptop. I also have Vista on my desktop.
It seems to me that Fedora has been somewhat buggy just as much as Ubuntu had for me just in different areas.
This is just my personal opinion but Linux seems a lot like driving an old used car. It's kinda of old looking on the outside but seems to drive well. While (for me) Vista is a lot like driving a new Cadillac smooth, polished and runs nicely.
Linux is nice BUT there interface is TERRIBLE compared to Mac and or Windows. I don't care how much compiz you add to it. That ***** doesn't make it any more usable at all. - shadowman99, on 11/29/2008, -1/+2^^^ correction to above - Audio only worked for NON-root users after disabling SELinux and removing alsa-pulseaudio-plugin. Also I had to edit /etc/security/console.perms.d/50--default.perms and add
=/dev/dsp* /dev/snd/*
At the bottom add
0666 0600 root - cougar618, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1I agree 100%. While it's not the biggest of deals to me, since i rarely use it, I would be more inclined to use suspend and hibernate if it did work. It does work out of the box in Ubuntu though... but that's not enough of a reason for me to switch.
- amfantasy, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2Root login is disabled in all distributions for a reason, it causes funny things to happen.
- ScottyMcBaggs, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Shadowman: you've been usign RH for ~10 years yet don't know how to troubleshoot selinux without logging into a GUI?
- QubitTarutaru, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1Fedora 10 ftw. I had a little difficulty with the WIFI, but that was easily solved with the madwifi package. I had an card with an Atheros chip, and madwifi gave compatibility. Sound worked right away, kmod-nvidia installed nicely, compiz-fusion installed with no problems, and wine is up and running. I've never been able to get Ubuntu running correctly for some reason; poor compatibility maybe.
IMHO, do not switch to these operating systems if you don't know how to compile C code with gcc. They take a lot of time and research to get up and running successfully.
BTW, I still use Windows XP for my main computer. I use GNU/Linux strictly for server computers. - amfantasy, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1I have that problem with my laptop to, I fixed it by install the nvidia drivers. If your laptop has a Nvidia card try installing the driver
- SteveMax, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Root graphical logins SHOULD be disabled, to make it hard for people to make stupid mistakes.
Didn't ctrl+alt+F1 + login as root + startx work? This is my default (and only) way to get a root X. I would never think of enabling root on kdm/xdm/gdm. - izelpii, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Any discussion about Fedora vs Ubuntu that talks about the software that comes packed on each is retarded.
Almost every piece can be / or is already shared. The choice of development cycle, the installation manager and the size of their respective communities is the difference. I think their dev cycle is very similar, the installation manager and the community is better in Ubuntu, while Fedora is the distribution to use if you want to be serious about working at a professional level with Linux (meaning, RedHat). Most distributions will incorporate other distribution's best ideas in the next development cycle.. and as in evolution, the best communities support the best software, which shows up in the next versions of the distros. - izelpii, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1http://tinyurl.com/6kv2cw
- shadowman99, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1@n0ia - Don't get me wrong, I didn't say Linux sucks. I just take issue with some of Fedora's settings. And sound only working for root user is a pretty big ***** up. I don't know how this stuff gets past a QA process.
I won't quit Linux, but I think next time I rebuild my box it will be a Ubuntu system. I had very good luck (and hassle free) on a laptop I had for a while. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1Why would you install a brand new release of any distro on a server machine? It surprised you that it didn't work?
Are you new to open source and server administration? - shadowman99, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1I wanted to login to gnome as root to trouble-shoot SELinux settings. I wound up disabling SELinux altogether since it's just a home box, and then I found the setting for Root login to GDM, in that order.
There are times (and they are becoming more frequent) when the only utils for system settings are gui based. - mhmdkhamis, on 02/14/2009, -0/+0… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … ______
