- FlareHeart, on 12/12/2008, -0/+7As much as I do advocate Open Source Software, I also advocate that people do research and chill out before sending anything to anyone in a state of outrage.
As much as it is good to apologize for posting something exaggerated in a fit of rage, the original post was somewhat (only a little) justified by the fact that the teacher didn't bother to research anything, or think about explaining the situation more thoroughly in order to prevent the rebuttal that was thrown her way. The internet is a wonderful tool and can teach us so much if we only think to look.
I do feel bad for her in a way, but I also find it rather disappointing that she didn't think to research it to learn for herself. I also have developed a large amount of respect for the HeliOS blog poster and his response. He handled it in a very mature fashion, which doesn't happen much anymore. - theaphro, on 12/12/2008, -0/+7I hope this story gets as much traction as the original posting that inspired it. Despite the rocky start and initial sore feelings, it exemplifies what can happen through open honest communication and a genuine desire to help (and learn).
- 3242130193, on 12/13/2008, -0/+4As painful as the teacher's ignorance appeared at first, it's pretty sad that it came to this. It's not that people are maliciously ignorant, and now it's apparent why the teacher had such a provoked reaction.
While this doesn't mean that onlookers will understand the breadth of the situation, at least the two parties involved have buried the hatchet and come to an understanding. That in my opinion is a happy ending. - Bicep, on 12/13/2008, -0/+3Thank you HeliOS for making this whole thing happen.
I thought your explanation of something learned by all parties was very eloquent indeed. I especially agree with your views on how we as humans should appreciate educators for the services they have committed to provide to our children. Humanity would be in a sad and savage, anarchistic state, were it not for people devoting their lives to educate others.
With that being said, I now look forward to the positive potential of great magnitude that has now been created for teacher Karen. I believe the situation has instilled a fierce anti-ignorance in teacher Karen that will carry on for many years to come.
I believe teacher Karen will now fight to bring out the truth about GNU/Linux and technological freedom to everyone whose brain she touches. To the efforts of Freedom in Technology, this is extremely valuable.
I think it is very professional and beneficial to GNU/Linux of you to have kept in contact with this teacher, and to have provided a path for something good to become of this entire situation.
I salute you friend, you truly are an effective soldier of Freedom in Technology. Thank you for your efforts, and for enabling humans with technology.

GNU/Linux Enthusiast - Vadi0, on 12/13/2008, -1/+4And that's how an unknown distro gained fame?
- smotpoker, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1Well, this didn't suggest anything new about the situation really. It's cool he calmed down a bit and is no longer so hostile but, IMO, he did nothing wrong other than maybe generalize by implying everyone in NEA were MS lemmings and act a bit condescending. Taking the kids' property without probable cause, ignorantly spreading misinformation and punishing him for it is still inexcusable. Despite the assertion that the kid was disruptive, they still failed to mention how and I somewhat doubt he suddenly made an announcement in the middle of class and everyone flocked over. This indicates the teacher was out of the room and began showing it off before class started which shouldn't be considered being disruptive.
That said, it's cool that she saw the err of her ways (to some degree at least) and hopefully everyone (especially those who were so outraged) has a chance to see where she is coming from and is humbled a bit (if that's the right word). It is also cool this HeliOS guy apologized for some of his spitefulness. Props to them both for resolving it - Atomic1fire, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1At least the teacher didn't sue or anything, and the writer restrained himself.
Being wrong is one thing, but getting a mob involved is another. - inajeep, on 12/12/2008, -1/+1Nothing like having a conclusion or at least more facts to the story. I'm happy to hear both sides of the story and how gracious and rational the author is. He handled his end well and I hope that those who were pissed off as I was at first will find this article and feel the same way now. To karen if she ends up reading this I like to withdraw some comments I had about you in the original thread. Again, I like to say how much better the situation appears as more of the story comes to light. There is still plenty of ignorance when it comes to the Linux but the off shoot of situations like this is that people will hear about it and learn.
