- inactive, on 04/16/2009, -3/+67Spoiler:
1. X.Org server 1.6 / GNOME 2.26: Better performance.
2. Evolution 2.26.1: Ccan now directly import Outlook PSTs including emails, contacts, appointments, tasks. Also supports MAPI, Outlook's "native protocol."
3. Fast Booting (some reports as low as 19 seconds with SSDs).
4. Ext4 support: faster than Ext3 (particularly on writes), more stable than ReiserFS.
5. Linux kernel 2.6.28-11.37: Improved disk performance, better SSD support, better virtual memory scalability. - steelaz, on 04/16/2009, -0/+53Funny how author calls his 3 GHz / 2GB RAM setup - vintage system. That makes me sad.
- sigmaman2, on 04/17/2009, -0/+25Stick with Ubuntu. Don't waste your money.
- Traiklin, on 04/16/2009, -4/+24I like how he refers to his PC as "Older" then says the specs at
"3GHz Pentium IV CPU, 2GB of RAM, an ATI Radeon 250 graphics card, and a 300GB SATA"
I'd love to have an "Older" PC at those specs. - CalcProgrammer1, on 04/16/2009, -0/+18You can boot a basic Linux terminal too in just a few seconds, but this is for booting a usable, fully running OS with a graphical interface...one that CAN run Firefox...
- Ewingo401, on 04/16/2009, -3/+20Jaunty is the best Ubuntu version to date in my opinion. Another great release from the folks at Canonical!
- linuxlucas, on 04/17/2009, -3/+19I should certainly hope a new release is better then all previous old ones!
<insert Microsoft joke here> - vortemenene, on 04/16/2009, -0/+16Well, this time I chose to Upgrade my existing Intrepid installation and it went off without a hitch.
Very pleased with everything so far, except that the new Firefox wasn't installed by default, but a quick trip to http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2009/03/12/test-driv ... solved that for me :)
As far as boot speed goes, it feels like I'm waiting less at the splash screen, but waiting longer for a usable desktop to load. It feels like there has been an improvement, but I can't tell quite yet.
Also, before anybody starts complaining about the themes, be sure to 'sudo apt-get install community-themes' and check http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2008/11/13/shiki-col ... for more info.
The new notification system is pretty slick too.
I would also like to point out to any users that choose to use 'update-manager -d' to perform an upgrade from their existing installation and see a warning about the 'FGLRX' driver, I went ahead and did it and it worked great. The only issue was having to reset my screen resolution, which really isn't an issue at all.
I am very pleased with this release candidate and will be performing a vanilla install after I'm done backing everything up. - TheZorch, on 04/16/2009, -0/+15According to, I believe Linux Magazine, Mark Shuttleworth at Canonical announced that Gnome in Ubuntu 9.10 would be getting a badly needed face lift. Lets face it, while Gnome is perhaps the easier to use desktop environment its look hasn't changed much in several years. Shuttleworth wants to fancy Gnome up like the KDE project did when they transitioned between versions 3 and 4, yet at the same time still keep Gnome's high performance and low system resource requirements. Its a tall order but I think its possible.
- Frayed_Knot, on 04/17/2009, -0/+12A 3.0Ghz P4 could easily be 6 or 7 years old now.
- Mutiny32, on 04/16/2009, -1/+12I don't like the idea of backporting kernel patches to 2.6.28 when 2.6.29 was out before the kernel freeze, the kernel devs were building it alongside 2.6.28 the whole time, but it was decided months before that it wouldn't be used at some conference attended by a fraction on the user and developers. 2.6.30 is just around the corner and by the time we get to 9.10, we'll probably be at 2.6.31 or further.
- worldgate989, on 04/16/2009, -1/+11Alright, our first apple fanboy.
- GovernmentsGun, on 04/17/2009, -0/+10*sigh*
FTA: I've been running Jaunty on a Gateway 503GR. This is an older PC with a 3GHz Pentium IV CPU, 2GB of RAM, an ATI Radeon 250 graphics card, and a 300GB SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) hard drive. Even on this 2006 vintage system, Ubuntu ran quite well.
It's comparable to my current system. *shakes head sadly* - lemur, on 04/17/2009, -2/+11All my systems have only 1GB of RAM, and none of them are clocked at 3ghz. They're all less than 5 years old, so I don't see what's vintage here.
- phrstbrn, on 04/17/2009, -0/+9So your completely non-functional WinXP VM can boot into 12 seconds?
Oh boy, oh boy, I can't wait to see that in action.
People have fine tuned fully-functional Linux distributions to boot in less than 10 seconds (Full networking, Desktop, and idle CPU, ready to start opening programs). They're pretty barebones, but at least you can run Firefox...
Unfortunately, it's pretty hardware and configuration specific (strip out EVERYTHING that you will never need), so it's pretty tough to make a one-size-fits-all package (like 99% of Linux distros) that can boot that fast. 20 seconds is pretty impressive, IMHO. - Skiessi, on 04/16/2009, -0/+9Video or it didn't happen.
- Khast, on 04/17/2009, -0/+8I guess the computer I have running Ubuntu must be considered as a dinosaur. 2.0GHz 256MB RAM and 60GB HDD. (So far 9.04 is running pretty sweet...though the system search program started ***** up last night....easy fix...exit program I don't need it at the moment.)
- Skiessi, on 04/16/2009, -0/+7And also, what can you do with this stripped down version?
- systmltdn, on 04/16/2009, -3/+10I can't wait for the xubuntu 9.04 when it comes out, xfce 4.6 looks promising.
- tux11, on 04/17/2009, -0/+6me too. spec wise.
- antidense, on 04/17/2009, -3/+9My list:
1. Gnome-Do (should also be available on intrepid, though)
2. Better themes
3. Gnotifier updated
4. Faster startup
5. More support for hibernation/suspend on notebooks - Invid, on 04/17/2009, -0/+6I ran Vista on an X2 3800+ w/ 2GB of RAM and when I complained about performance, I was told that my system was too slow (lol). This same system blazes on XP or any flavour of Ubuntu, but my performance problems are hardware related....right. Most of us here have unbelievably powerful hardware sitting on our desks, but you'd never know it because of the terrible software that so many of them run.
It's a shame that this guy is drinking the Microsoft koolaid. At least Win 7 looks to tame the insanity some. I'll most likely stick to Ubuntu on the desktop and OS X on the laptop though. - inactive, on 04/17/2009, -0/+6The following LTS will be killer.
- sonicjosh, on 04/17/2009, -0/+6The thing I've been waiting for is Ext4. Faster booting will also be nice.
- jbell1, on 04/17/2009, -0/+5I am excited that my wifi works out of the box
- flangepiece, on 04/17/2009, -0/+5He might know his gnu linux, but he doesn't half come across as a complete *****. If he blows any more smoke up his own arse, he'll explode.
- mynameistux, on 04/17/2009, -0/+5xfce is a massively important project. While I personally don't like it, it's a bit way that linux gets on old hardware with xubuntu.
kudos to the xfce and xubuntu devs. - Wareznuke, on 04/17/2009, -0/+4and safer than ReiserFS - Felony Suspect.
- skate3214, on 04/17/2009, -0/+4Yeah it's not really vintage, just oldish.
- tux11, on 04/17/2009, -1/+5using 9.04 beta and i really like i'll never even consider ms windows os!
- mynameistux, on 04/17/2009, -1/+5I remember reading a forum post where someone claimed anything older of worse than an nvidia 9800 was out dated.
I sat here wishing I had a measly 7800, but am stuck with this 7300.
I hate my life. - Killerah, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3Wait, what other distro has the notifications system that 9.04 has?
- dhughes, on 04/19/2009, -0/+3 Well it is a Pentium 4, not a dual core or even a quad core and the newest out is the Intel i7 so I'd say yeah being three generations behind is vintage when talking about computers
- riffic, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3Reiser was upgraded to convicted Felon
- ethana2, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3Your intel GMA 500, if you have one.
..should that by chance actually be the case, I recommend just selling it. - lemur, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3I'm waiting for that too.
- DrLeePhD, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2it would be nice to know what will inexplicably quit working if I upgrade.
I'll keep with 8.04 until I have a reason where I need to switch. - renegadeafk, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2That p4 could easily be and old ass 478. with 2 gigs of ddr. and that video card is an old POS. so yeah his system isn't as good as people in this thread are making it to be.
- stix213, on 04/22/2009, -0/+12.6.29 has had far less testing than 2.6.28, and they obviously aren't backporting all the 2.6.29 patches, just the ones that can be tested properly. This makes a lot of sense from a stability standpoint.
2.6.29 hasn't even been out a month yet! Ubuntu is on a 6 month release cycle for a reason. You can't expect to move to a pretty untested kernel with only a few weeks and assume there just aren't going to be any problems even though there has been practically no QA.
"...and by the time we get to 9.10, we'll probably be at 2.6.31 or further."
So what do you think they will be running in 9.10? - inactive, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1My two boxes are about the same stats, 250gb hard drive tho. I'm a cheap ass, who doesn't play pc games. So unless the motherboard or chip burns out, I'll never replace them.
- paul21, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1Here you are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GKohxZHNg4
- stix213, on 04/22/2009, -0/+1Lack of MAPI support has been a huge problem for Ubuntu and Linux in general. Probably the single biggest issue for me and everyone else running Linux at my office.
Time to finally ditch the XP vm and outlook - tux11, on 04/17/2009, -1/+2too simple for me.
- Azathothh, on 04/17/2009, -0/+12.0GHz?? nahh
i still have a Pentium II 450Mhz at home running Windows 2000 server - 2matrix, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1i think Gnome looks great, but then again I am not big on too much eye candy, Mac OSX and Vista both look a bit too busy to my eye. The thing that is great about Gnome is that it is very 'clean' looking, things mesh together well, keep it simple is the best way to go.
- JayRD, on 04/17/2009, -2/+3I'll take this guys preview of 9.04 over this one. He's got a gun pointed at his monitor, you just know he means business.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErrppEb_zho - theaceoffire, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1For example, booting linux in 5 seconds:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7NxCM8ryF8 - theaceoffire, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1Boot really fast!
You can also use it to hold up books, add contrast to the desk, (Comes with a cupholder!), and much much more! - stix213, on 04/22/2009, -0/+1If you are running single core, you are hopelessly obsolete. My 3 year old Lenovo laptop is even dual core. When his machine was top notch John Kerry still thought he could be president.
- Jareth86, on 04/17/2009, -1/+2FTA: "If the only reason you've stuck with Windows is because of Outlook, you don't have to stick with it anymore."
Can the blackberry sync up with evolution? No? Than you're still missing a key demographic. -
