-PClinuxOS / Mandriva - DougVitale, on 09/26/2008, -6/+27Dugg this article for mentioning PCLinuxOS and Mint, the two easiest distributions for Linux newcomers to use.

http://www.linuxmint.com/ - oneoverzero, on 09/26/2008, -6/+25Slackware should be on here. Or at least Arch.
- Tob3z, on 09/26/2008, -1/+15Is the title technically correct? Just I have never heard of linux distributions as "linuxes"
- StupotAce, on 09/26/2008, -1/+12Arch and Sabayon distro's that are definitely worth mentioning.
- Lewie, on 09/26/2008, -1/+12If you put a Gentoo sticker on your computer, you get +5Mhz.
- tripzero, on 09/26/2008, -1/+10anyone who says Linux needs to combine into one distro to compete with MS and Apple doesn't understand the Opensource Symbiosis. Every innovation developed by a distro in Opensource benefits every other distro. When redhat adds a cool new feature to networkmanager, or novell submits a patch to the kernel, ubuntu, gentoo, and everyone else benefits from it. It's the opensource ecosystem that makes Linux able to compete with MS and Apple. It's the reason why Compiz surpasses MS's Aero and Apple's [name eludes me] in function and in feature.
Really, the only thing that the Linux desktop needs to do is overcome the current mainstream thought that Linux is "too hard". That's because Linux, feature for feature, beats both windows and osX combined (take for example file system support, window managing features, the wealth of preinstalled or easy to get apps, etc...). - RoboHobo, on 09/26/2008, -1/+9Lini?
- Rhendal, on 09/26/2008, -5/+13What, no Gentoo?
- reverius, on 09/26/2008, -0/+8Buried for the word "codexes" in the article.
Codex: Latin word for a book in the format used for modern books, with separate pages bound together with a cover.
Codices: The plural of Codex.
Codexes: Not a word.
Codecs (what they meant!): Coder/Decoders (get it? Co/dec) for audio and video formats. - Smurph0404, on 09/26/2008, -1/+9If you're going to make a list do not bury the listed items in the middle of paragraphs. It's like you're playing keep-away with the information. Nobody wants to read your actual article because you probably aren't some amazingly entertaining writer. If you were you wouldn't be blogging about linux on computerworld.com.
- r0b1, on 09/26/2008, -0/+8I like Gentoo, and it's the only one I use - but I could see it be a bit daunting for first time users looking to 'try' Linux...
- webcrumb, on 09/26/2008, -0/+7I reckon your biggest problem could be that you picked the server version. It doesn't have X installed by default. Try the desktop version.
- aethelberga, on 09/26/2008, -0/+7We use both of those distros on our network. Thumbs up for Mint
- litkaj, on 09/26/2008, -1/+7Gentoo take too damn much time to maintain and the extra couple % of performance you MIGHT get when you're NOT compiling updates isn't worth it.
- Sammi84, on 09/26/2008, -1/+6Please read up and stop this unified Linux trolling.
Linux is fragmented because of it's open source nature. Fragmentation is in a way the whole point of open source. It's the freedom to share code, and use it the way you want to use it. Sure it would be good if the tech standards in Linux were more unified, but that's what The Linux Foundation is for.

- 4321234, on 09/26/2008, -2/+7I hate choices and options.
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -2/+7You're "stipid," stupid.
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -2/+7No. Gentoo is for ricers.
- FPlus, on 09/26/2008, -1/+6I used to be anti Linux because it was cool. I had to change my position because PCLinuxOS was cooler than being anti Linux.
- BigManOnCampus, on 09/26/2008, -5/+10Maybe someone wants you to read instead of skim.
- Rhendal, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5Yeah, but the article wasn't directed towards first time users.
- vardhaman2249, on 09/26/2008, -3/+8+1 for PCLinuxOS
- 1LordAnubis, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5My favorite Distribution is Arch Linux;
its a binary, i686 optimized distro, with perhaps not *quite* so many packages available in the repos as debian, but it is also bleeding edge..like debian sid, and stable at the same time. Its insanely fast with an awesome packages manager, and its simple/streamlined without any bloat.
My second favorite distro is debian.. I need to give sidux a try.. then ubuntu, then fedora
Of course, on different hardware my preference would be different - alex7575, on 09/26/2008, -3/+7How about one that won't drop my wireless connection and require me to reboot to do so?
- DomZy, on 09/26/2008, -0/+4Linux Mint
- NJank, on 09/26/2008, -0/+4let's not forget the PCLinuxOS for Mechanical Engineers:
www.CAELinux.com
(it can do other stuff too, but is currently without SPICE and EDA tools that would make it better for EE's.) - caulktel, on 09/26/2008, -1/+5I just installed TinyMe which is a derivative of PCLinux on my daughters laptop, man does it run nice and it is pretty.
- tripzero, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3"and it's not based on Debian"
this is a good thing? I fail to see the argument. who cares what a distro is based on if it can achieve it's goals. - LifeNova, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3Buried for best "Linuxes"

I LOVE OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE!!! - diggerpleez, on 09/26/2008, -1/+4How about 5 NON-debian based or Ubuntu inspired desktop Linuxes you haven't tried?
(yeah I skimmed and saw mandriva too... point still stands) - grampajoe, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3There's no reason to use five.
- bobbknight, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3That is why I like Sabayon.
- SugaryToaster, on 09/26/2008, -0/+3There's nothing wrong with Debian..
- tendonut, on 09/26/2008, -1/+4Or number them! We all know how us Diggers love our "Top X Best" lists.
- wakingrufus, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2its supposed to be linuces like matrix/matrices
- tripzero, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3Compiz isn't just a rotating cube, it's a collection of niceties that make your life easier. I will provide 2 examples on why window managing in Linux is better:
1) you are transcribing something non-verbatim from your IM client to a word processing doc. in windows, you alt-tab several times until you have transposed from IM cleint to word doc. In Linux, you stuff the IM window in a corner, tell it to display "on-top" and you begin typing in the word doc with both visible. Window focus in Linux is just better, period.
2) Multiple desktop/workspaces. if you want to drag a file to an open application in windows, you need to 1-show desktop, 2-drag icon to the respective application on the taskbar, 3- drag it to the now opened document. In linux, 1-switch desktops to an empty, 2-drag file across the screen to the still open application. 2 steps compared to 3, faster, more efficient, and fun (because of the nice eye-love compiz gives you when you do it).
There are many more examples.
"What if I want to play a DVD out of the box?"
Such arguments are easily reversed. What if I want to play an XVid contained video in windows out of the box? What if I want to play an ogg file or a flac file? You can't expect any OS to do *everything* out of the box. The simple fact is, most Linux distros still do more out of the "box" than both OSX and windows. - ethana2, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2takatoo, you just have to install proprietary firmware for your wifi-- there are all kinds of guides for it, but you'll need an ethernet port.
Next time, don't buy broadcom. - devnullDood, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2Whatever happened to OpenSuse 11?
- tripzero, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2I use ubuntu, know how to compile a kernel and build from source but what is the point? Ubuntu's kernel has everything I need so I don't have to compile my own (unless I want more speed, in which case, the ubuntu wiki and forum are full of resources on howto recompile "with the right support").
I'm not sure what argument you are trying to make. People who use Linux must use a distro like slackware because it'll "encourage" you to compile your kernel with the right support?
For a basic Linux class, i would be shocked if the delved into security. There are classes specifically for that topic. Teaching students what the X server is, or what a desktop environment is is probably enough for a windows user to take.
Stop being a dick. You give yourself a bad name. - infiniphunk, on 09/26/2008, -4/+6Just buy a decent wireless adapter for a change.
- webcrumb, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2I'd add Pardus.
Very polished distro from Turkey that noone will have heard of. Beats Mint hands-down. It even has a very sweet intro video on first boot like MacOS X. -
