- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14You are both confused ( reasonably so with all these different versions ).
ATI cards work with XGL and have all along
Nvidea cards work with XGL and have all along
Intel cards work with XGL and have all along
Until recently, only Intel ( read: crap GPU hardware but very good open source drivers ) and some ATI cards with open source DRI worked with AIGLX
Now all Nvidea cards work with AIGLX with new beta drivers
ATI still does not support AIGLX
AIGLX > XGL ( although you get the same compiz effects with both ) - leszek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15there is no xgl on this live-cd (AIGLX instead).
what you really want to try is compiz (or beryl which is a fork of compiz).
yes i know, it is complicated .. - xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"ATI cards will NOT work with AIGLX, yet" you don't know how much that hurts me to hear that. I have an ATI card in my computer and two 24 inch monitors at work and I can't get XGL to work on that!! I hate it! I'm so getting an NVIDIA card.
- stevetures, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Didn't think VMware supported OpenGL rendering. Doesn't emulate a Nvidia or ATI card. (or do I have this wrong).
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@leszek:
"The World's first and fastest Gentoo Linux powered distribution now has made a new record, AIGLX and XGL support on a single, powerful and cutting edge LiveCD"
So it actually has both.
I tried this on my macbook pro a while ago when it was still 3.0 and it ran @ about 2 FPS and without proper resolution, although Compiz did run.
I decided to try again with this newer release so I grabbed the .torrent but Azureus claimed it was the same torrent I had already downloaded ( weeks ago ) that was still 3.0 and came out before Nvidea's new beta drivers so, unless I or Azureus is wrong , users looking to try AIGLX should make sure that what they are downloading is in fact the newest version. - kerrle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@JimXugle
No - it's perfectly legal. As long as you're making the source available as per the license, it's entirely okay to sell a Linux distro. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6upload ya bloody leachers, i'm only getting 1kbps down and i'm uploaing at 40.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ Venky80:
To clarify, 'all' in this case does not include cards released in 1999, did you really expect that card to be able to run XGL or AIGLX? - tungsai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I used to work with a guy named Beryl.
- bdwoolman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6We learn from the website that Sabayon is a sauce. But is it an open sauce?
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5brindon: You are a complete tool. People don't use Linux JUST for XGL. They use it because they CAN. It's a nice addition to the desktop experience.
I try XGL because I have an nVidia card and Linux....not the other way around. - JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Exellent idea! I'm torrenting now.
I was thinking of making an "eyecandy" script for debian... The Idea is one script that downloads, compiles, and installes eyecandy right after a fresh install of Debian. If anyone's interested in helping, please comment below. - jdong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Oops, I am wrong. Sabayon is the new name for RR/RR64, not Kororaa (though both are based on Gentoo)
- stoanhart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Nvidia and ATI sued the last distro that featured XGL, because the video drivers in it where not licensed. I think this one will have the same fate, so get it while it's up there..."
No they didn't - the Kororaa team took stopped development voluntarily because of some complaints about GPL violations due to the linking of closed source drivers with open sourced kernel code.
I don't know how this CD is different, but maybe because you can boot with the "nonproprietary" flag it leaves the choice up to the user, just like when you install closed drivers on any linux distro. - fatsobob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Great, I have been trying to find a way to try xgl.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPL#Common_misconceptions
"The GPL expressly permits one to sell copies of GPL-covered works and charge a download fee for them. Purchasing rather than downloading may make sense from a convenience standpoint, but it does not change either the purchaser's or vendor's rights or responsibilities under the GPL. In fact, licenses that only allow non-commercial distribution are automatically incompatible with the GPL."
I don't use AIM but I will post my email adress in my profile. - 42PhoeniX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4 That's weird, Kororaa live CD was removed because of violating the GPL, this probably does too.
- cmost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@h2d2 "Nvidia and ATI sued the last distro that featured XGL, because the video drivers in it where not licensed. I think this one will have the same fate, so get it while it's up there..."
No they didn't. Someone not related to either nVidia or ATI claimed that Kororaa's XGL live-CD MIGHT violate GPL. Nobody sued anybody! - SeBBBe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3He meant its difficult to understand its technical workings. Using it is as easy as 1-2-3.
- invar9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Downloaded about a week ago and I have converted at least 10 windows users with it..........LOL..............
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I run AIGLX & Comiz (the Beryl branch, just not ready to move to their release yet) on my laptop. It only has an i915 video card, and it does pretty nicely (~50fps for normal operation).
I can't wait to take this home and try the liveCD on my MediaPC hooked up to my 55" HDTV ;) - bobasaurus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Come on people, start downloadin the torrent :) .
- sublime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I run xgl compiz at work and home. Cant wait for the aiglx +beryl to become more stable to use on a day to day basis. The genie effect and compiz settings manager look sweet.
- metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know if Beryl will let you run open gl programs inside of it. I know compiz does not.
- greyfade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i just got AIGLX with vanilla Compiz working on the new nVidia beta drivers last night.
it runs beautifully and, while it still has some bugs, it's very fun to play with. now that nVidia support AIGLX out of the box, i think i'll stick with it for a while. :D - Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I assume ATI works with XGL now, because of new drivers. I'm going to give it a shot on my X800.
- stylesP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2just use the open source driver and aiglx runs fine
- vijayd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The latest Mandriva Linux 2007 (RC1/RC2) live CDs called "Mandriva One 2007" contain both Xgl and AIGLX with compiz (not beryl). Also, they have a configuration utility to configure Xgl/AIGLX stuff. I have tested this CD on Intel 810 and Radeon 9600 graphics cards; and it works like charm and very stable/fast.
- whalbyrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@djlosch
um...you haven't actually looked at Sabayon, have you? the whole point of this distro is to have a system that's already compiled, to which you can add whatever you please. They didn't choose to base it on Gentoo out of some fetishistic obsession with compiling everything from source, but because of Portage.
For those not familiar, Portage is a package management system, similar to Synaptic or Apt-get, with two main differences:
1) Since it does compile everything from source, it can have packages added without the need for the maintainers to generate a broadly-compatible binary for each and every package. The result is more frequently updated packages.
2) Portage covers a much wider depth and breadth of software packages than Synaptic or Apt-get, and through the Overlay feature, almost any software package can be added by the user. A simple Python script is all that's needed (templates are provided, even), and once the overlay is added to your /etc/make.conf, you can emerge the newly added package as if it were a part of portage. Obviously, maintaining this custom overlay is your own responsibility, but this lets you manage *all* your software with Portage's powerful emerge tool, not just the Gentoo-sanctioned packages.
On another note, I am curious about the AIGLX vs. XGL issue, and was wondering if anyone has done a comparison between the two with a nVidia card? Also, how would one invoke AIGLX instead of XGL for use with compiz-quinnstorm? The Sabayon devs chose a great distro to base their own upon, but their efforts in the documentation department are rather lackluster, sadly. - JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4No, you assumed that I had the mindset of "We (Linux users) need this". To the contrary, My mindset is "Look... we can do it too, but it's not necessary."
And who's Selling Linux? Isn't that a violation of the GPL? - XVampireX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2XGL: Just a hack that runs on top of a regular X server to allow GLX.
AIGLX: Native support for GLX.
In the case of Sabayon, you have to run either one of them through the boot:
boot: gentoo aiglx or boot: gentoo xgl
then it runs compiz automatically.
Also, I hear XGL doesn't allow other applications to use GLX, so it crashes compiz.
AIGLX doesn't seem to be doing that, because it's native. - JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@trogdoor
Got an AIM Screen Name you can post in your Digg Profile? - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'll help.
- greyfade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1GPLed software can not be sold - but distribution can be done for a fee. for example, RedHat sells discs that contain GPLed software *and include a support contract*. Stallman himself charged $150 to distribute early versions of EMACS. it's perfectly legal, but you can't sell it as if you owned it.
in addition, the GPL explicitly states that you must make source code available and you may charge "a reasonable fee" for the method of distribution. i.e., i can give you a copy of the linux source code on CD, but i'll need $1.50 for going through the trouble of burning it and sending it to you. - Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thanks for clearing that all up, I was kind of confused that ATI wasn't working with AIGLX because when I messed with the whole XGL scene on Ubuntu, I remembered hearing that you needed an ATI card to get some of the more advanced stuff.
- tomocchino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the Kororra LiveCD was taken offline a while ago due to "GPL violation by distributing the ATI and nVidia drivers with the Linux kernel"
read more - http://kororaa.org/static.php?page=xgl-livecd
i would think, (like others) that the Sabyon LiveCD will probably have to deal with the same issue of including the non open source drivers with the kernel... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If your running nvidia 95xx beta series drivers you don't need XGL or AIGLX, it will run in Xorg 7.1 provided you set the composite settings in xorg.conf
- lxnay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I am an ATi Linux Drivers beta tester (and I keep in contact with ATi Linux drivers developers) and I was in contact with the NVIDIA Project Manager.
No problems for them. - inactive, on 12/03/2007, -0/+0Cheapest and the best data recovery service in the world.

Job Resume - http://www.sristysaviation.com/resume.html - johnwroachiii, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2no, it's not a violation of the GPL to sell GPL'd code.
- krinthekuz, on 09/16/2008, -1/+0while gentoo forums/docs are the best linux docs on the web, the idea of building from source for mass produced computers is silly (i went from redhat with RHN, to gentoo, to debian, to ubuntu). i give them MAJOR credit for working this into a livecd, even if they picked gentoo instead of ubuntu. i havent tried the livecd out, but will later tonight.
