Resolution: Won't fix. - airmind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36Ok, maybe a Linux user doesnt NEED to know how to edit the xorg.conf file?
Do you need to edit a text file to get your video/monitor/keyboard/etc... working on Windows? Then why so many people think everybody should use Linux instead of Windows?
Sorry, I love Linux and can never go back to Windows crap, but the Linux community should change a bit to welcome those noobies better, just as the Ubuntu project is doing. You have no idea how great it is to see so many people who would never think of Linux try Ubuntu and really like it. And most of these people didnt had to edit the xorg.conf, because if they did they wouldnt like it. - crazybrit, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36@randaii: Yay generalizations!
I'm an Ubuntu user. I use Ubuntu because it was the first distro I tried, and it's always worked for me. I've never been hostile to other Linux users; I'm aware that there are other distros, and I know that bash isn't the only shell out there. - Tweakedenigma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32@randaii & habbofresh
Speaking as an Ubuntu user I agree with you to a point there are a number of new people that are sometimes a little nuts when it comes to how great Ubuntu is Vs other distro's but by no means is that a reason to say that Ubuntu is bad for Linux as a whole. I can say without a doubt that I have been insulted by people from the Fedora, Gentoo & SuSE camps before I picked up Ubuntu and even after for using Ubuntu. So I'll do my best from our end to keep it under control but hey even you too have been insulting to a number of users right now. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29I love reality checks and sense of humor

What you said, except substitute "Gentoo" every place you typed "Ubuntu"!
Puh-leeze! People in the Ubuntu community are merely exceptionally enthusiastic about their chosen OS. They are certainly not elitist or arrogant; certainly not to the extent I've encountered such elitism and arrogance in the communities of other Linux OSs Ive worked with over the years. I've been using Ubuntu for about a year and I find their community vast and knowledgeable and very user-friendly most of the time. I've been using Linux for all of my home and business machines (including my servers) for over four years! I've tried literally dozens of distributions and I chose Ubuntu because it simply works out of the box, without a lot of hassles. While I posess the knowledge and experience, I don't have a lot of time for fiddling around getting things just right. When I do have an issue, the vast resources of the aforementioned community make solving problems easy! You need to grow up! I don't know what experience you had with the Ubuntu community that made you take such a sour stance, but I suggest you give them another chance. Good luck! - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25 by habbofresh 47 minutes ago
...So far my impression of an Ubuntu user is someone who learned that "sudo apt-get" installs everything for "free" and there's no other shell than "bash."
---------------------------
So far my impression of a Linux user is someone who looks down on people who don't fully comprehend apt-get and think that bash is the only shell.
Good way to encourage Linux use. Keep Linux complicated and elitist, that is a SURE WIN. /sarcasm. - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Status: WONTFIX

- illegal_op, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I actually just installed ubuntu on my laptop a few days ago. I have to say that once you ubuntu you can't undo :-)
- gugin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I keep trying to edit my xorg.conf file and windows xp just says " an error has occurred and windows must shutdown! It isn't even nice to me. I'm using Microsoft ubuntu xp 10.4.9 if that helps.

Im curious to know if you've used both Feisty and Edgy (or Dapper)....its a bit more than just "some updates", try built in wireless for most devices (Looks like it handles USB wireless fine), restricted driver support (arguable if its "good" or "bad", but handled well), and a TON of additional useability improvements.....
oh, and yea, it has your standard updates as well... - borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I am on ubuntu now...fresh install on my laptop of 7.04 and i love it. The only problem so far was a resolution issue that i was able to fix with a quick google search...I am a total noob but i think I'm gunna be sticking with this for a while.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Nice piece of humour, but you also add clutter to the tracker. There's already Mark's #1 bug to fix, but this is akin to Wiki saturation, which often leads to deletion.
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8While I agree, it seems you posted to the wrong topic.
- ronin2040, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9i would imagine that for more complex issues you could go to another channel...ie, for sound issues, #alsa....
#ubuntu IS sort of the default "get-me-started" channel, although there are some pretty talented people in there regularly... - gugin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I was writing my xorg.conf file on my pc and it’s like ...beep, beep, beep…and then, like, half of my .conf was gone. And I was, like heh. It devoured my conf. It was a really good conf. And then I had to do it again and I had to do it fast so it wasn't as good. It's kind of a bummer. ne1 n0 y I dont have a desktop managergui? 1 n 3 3 d h 3 l p my kernel is panicking!!!

- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah my laptop uses an integrated sis mirage video...if you know what that is. Basically it's pretty old and not really standard. Anyway i installed and it was all OK but the highest res was 1280x1024 which drove me insane for the short amount of time i was on it. I searched a little and found what i needed to type in the command line and i found how to get on the command line (see what a noob i am. Anyway the instructions told me to press ctrl alt f1 to get to command and the type the command sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. After that this blue screen came up asking me questions, which i answered mostly. The first one had a few drivers, sis included. I picked that. Tell you the truth, ubuntu had already answered most of them for me, I just pressed enter until i got to a page with many resolutions on it. I highlighted the correct one pressed space and then pressed enter a few more times till the thing ended and a little black box showed up saying it was done. The i shut down and then i booted up again it was the right rez.
anyway hope that helped. and give ubuntu another try. You might be pleasantly surprised. - jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I've had wonderful support in the Ubuntu IRC channel. Just make sure you search the Ubuntu forums and the web before asking a question. If you ask a simple common question, they will probably ignore you.

You should look at some of the Debian dev team....
and I mean that with utmost respect
Debian reprezent! - AlienBenefactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sitting here watching the upgrade on my Powerbook, via an x11 forward from the Kubuntu box in the other room, and having my lunch. If that ain't wacky what is? :P
- boyter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I recently installed Ubuntu on my laptop (since it cant play games and I am a developer seemed like a good idea). After years of playing with Red Hat and Slackware it was nice to find a distro that just worked. Every bit of hardware was picked up from install.
I have been really amazed at how well it works. If they can keep this up Ubuntu will become "linux" to the average user. People will say "Oh the other day I installed Ubuntu and its awesome" Which while sad from the GNU/Linux point of view is awesome to see. - rdoger6424, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@humperdeath
I think that Feisty was in beta or was an RC 3 weeks ago, so I assume it got better. I'm personally waiting a week until I'm sure that there aren't any kinks in upgrading to feisty from edgy via update manager, but a fresh install should be good - cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've never had a problem with my posts or comments on the Ubuntu forums. People seem generally helpful there. Then again, I don't ask stupid questions.
Ubuntu is good because there's a lot of people using it, and you're pretty much guaranteed to get it to do what you want it to do. Ain't nothing wrong with that. It's about time we had a distribution without the Red Hat name become popular. - azAZ09, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5...insane in 'da brain ...
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Seems like people have forgotten Bug #1: http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1
- MindTrigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I had issues as well with my 915 video chipset in my laptop when I first installed Edgy last year. It was unable to display WUXGA widescreen (1920x1200) right out of the box. I ended up researching the solution and creating a new writeup of the workaround for people to use online. They didn't fix this issue in 7.04 either, but the fix works on this version as well.

"Oh yeah Mepis is based on Ubuntu so no Ubuntu no Mepis"
============================================
MEPIS was first released in 2003, Ubuntu was first released in 2004.. MEPIS was based on Debian.. MEPIS would still exist even without Ubuntu using the Debian repositories.. - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3probably doesn't fully support EFI. Try installing Bootcamp first.
That should work.
Or, unless you need higher end graphics acceleration, just run it in parallels along side a your other distros, windows, etc.
Very convenient. - Tweakedenigma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3your placing the blame on the Ubuntu community for PCLinux, Mepis and others are not getting mentioned on digg? All I can say about that is 1) thats just insane & 2) a lot of people wouldn't even know about linux at all if not for Ubuntu. Also if you dont like the Gnome desktop you could have went with Kubuntu or Xfce. Not to be rude but this is a pretty weak argument against Ubuntu and granted there are good ones but this just doesnt carry any wait.
Oh yeah Mepis is based on Ubuntu so no Ubuntu no Mepis. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Gentoo isn't much faster, in fact a lot of the time it can be slower and when it is faster its normally like %8, I ran Gentoo for ages and Ubuntu seems just as fast most of the time.
You also have to take into account the time you loose from emerging and setting everything up, Ubuntu does some things like prelinking and such automagically.
I always highly recommend Gentoo for people that want to learn a bit more about how Linux works. - punkrockscks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"MEPIS was first released in 2003, Ubuntu was first released in 2004.. - benplaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like to hang out in #ubuntuforums... a lot of knowledgeable people,. assuming they're awake.
I'm not an ubuntu user anymore, but I still hang out in there sometimes :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm sure it wont be long before we have a graphical client for configuring xorg.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10@cmost:
It's true, us Gentoo users tend to be pretty elitist. The fact is, Gentoo is inherently much faster than any of the other mainstream distros, but it makes you do a lot more stuff yourself. It's hard to use -- something which can't be said for SuSe or Ubuntu. Both have their place. You'll never hear me seriously bash a user of another distro, unless they claim theirs is as fast as mine :) - jownz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2gnome-look.org and kde-look.org
Nobody but yourself to blame for an ugly desktop. - borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2^ edit...originally 1024x768...now 1280x800
sry bout that - humperdeath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey, thanks you guys. Yes, I did try the pre-release version back then, so I was warned about some driver issues. I'll give it another try, but like someone said, I'll wait till next weekend, to be sure.
- xptweakerntn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I could have told you that.
/Long Live Ubuntu! - CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As mentioned above there are some big changes. The previous version was hell on my system, and I just gave up. The new release literally works out of the box for me now, and i've even got an ATI card. The only thing i've had to do was install flash...
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem isn't EFI, it's the video card. I *believe* that all Intel Macs with ATI cards haven't been able to run the LiveCDs since 6.06LTS (which works fine BTW). The problem may be limited to the 256MB versions of the X1600 in Intel Macs, I can't remember.
6.06LTS works fine.
6.10 has severe graphical corruption.
7.04 either locks up on the loading screen, or if you let it sit there long enough it seems to eventually boot in with severe graphical corruption. - Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think all Linux users suffer from drapetomania.
- concertina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@HerrEisenheim
I've been able to boot and install dapper through feisty on a MBP core duo laptop (radeon x1600 chipset). I do get some graphical distortion in the loading screen with edgy, but nothing unusable. The problem may lie with later chipsets.
@joebaynham
Did you try booting in safe graphics mode? Or do you not even get to a boot menu? - gugin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I made a mistake on the installation. How do I get the whiteout off?
- generalloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"And when I installed the latest version (Feisty) I had to edit my xorg.conf to get the right Alt key to work."
I just read an article that showed you how to do that in a GUI: http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,130923-page,1-c,linux/article.html -
