- TheCosmicFool, on 09/12/2008, -9/+85BREAKING: Water is wet.
- inactive, on 09/11/2008, -3/+77Anything can be changed. It's open source. Gosh!
- dknighton, on 09/12/2008, -4/+34This blog entry reads like it was written by an 8 year old. Neither the grammar or the content make a strong case for Linux as an OS for the masses. Yet another example of a Linux user who just doesn't get it.
- aflaks, on 09/12/2008, -1/+25The OS only gains its final touches with the user's input. Leave the pre-packaged, unalterable to Microsoft
- johndavidjack, on 09/12/2008, -5/+23Oh for the love of God. There are more distros than Ubuntu. Not to mention, the article was painfully obvious, and not to mention, pretty uninteresting at that.
Buried for more Ubuntu spam.
Jesus, I've converted people to Ubuntu, and I think it's great, but come the ***** on... - Charun, on 09/12/2008, -1/+18"allow these people"
I don't think that's how open source works. - exomni, on 09/12/2008, -1/+16I like how they claim you can make Linux look good, but the screenshot they give is a mock-up.
I don't understand why it's so hard to make Linux look as good as OSX, but I've tried everything and it's all disappointing aesthetically. Oh well, I still love my linux.
The thing is, Ubuntu SHOULD have a look, because that's the number one thing after (actually often before) affordability and support that real users look for. Canonical should spend more time, or maybe just get better designers, to make Linux look as good as OSX. But it's not just skin-deep, either, the perfect intuitive functionality of OSX makes it "look" good. Linux needs that. - nicku, on 09/12/2008, -1/+15I really like the Dust theme.

Its not a OSX or Vista clone, but is very sharp and polished and the window elements aren't too different as to confuse someone new to Linux. - Sabretou, on 09/12/2008, -1/+14Research has just found that water, on coming contact with a foreign body can make that body wet as well. Scientists left baffled.
- Charun, on 09/12/2008, -1/+13accept
- djgreedo, on 09/12/2008, -0/+10Comment dugg for "Linux" and "Ubuntu".
- srg13, on 09/12/2008, -0/+9Please stay out of the technology section - do us (and yourself) a favour and turn it (or at least the Linux category) off in your settings.
- johndavidjack, on 09/12/2008, -1/+10Including goatse?
- Sabretou, on 09/12/2008, -2/+11Your mom is free.
- inactive, on 09/12/2008, -3/+12Christ, I swear people will digg anything with the words "Linux" or "Ubuntu" in the title.
Most poorly written and useless article of the month. - hungryduck, on 09/12/2008, -5/+13Anything>Aero
- hungryduck, on 09/12/2008, -2/+10So is air.
- bradleyland, on 09/12/2008, -0/+7And here I thought Mac users were supposed to have the market cornered when it comes to smugness.
- omarciddo, on 09/12/2008, -2/+9I, for one, do not accept our Microsoft and Apple overlords.
Fixed. Do work on your English please. - benplaut, on 09/12/2008, -1/+8But the fact that you have to alter a system DLL to make it work (harmless as it may be) is preposterous. Do they really expect to be able to sell you themes, for it to be such a priority to require a bit of a hack to make themes work?
(I multi boot, with custom themes on all my OS's) - inactive, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6Don't except them from what?
And what's a "loard"? - Culyt, on 09/12/2008, -1/+7Why do people keep posting endless mockups.
This is what some of my desktops have looked like over the last few months (The 2nd is actually FreeBSD, but anyway):
http://h3g3m0n.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/neolumi ...
http://h3g3m0n.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/freebsd ...
You might hate these, particularly the green one which is actually my favorite of the desktops I've used over the past few years, less strain on the eyes, simple non-busy interface, less in the way of gradients and shiny plastic which has begun to annoy the hell out of me, its also made from the inbuilt themes just recolored (Emerald was used for the borders), but the fact is you can setup the look to appeal to you.
The second one was one I got together in 5 min while trying a FreeBSD install, I just grabbed a bunch of stuff from gnome-look.org
This doesn't even take into account alternative window managers, if you find your system to bloated, try Fluxbox or something, provided you don't mind loosing the 3d spinning cube and wobbly windows.
☢ - Sabretou, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6Yes, of course, nobody must know of our secret society cult.
- TheWindBlows, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6I've tried those theme shells out before and they just don't work out so nicely. Such as buttons not working or being misplaced from where the picture is.
- djgreedo, on 09/12/2008, -1/+7Unintentional irony alert!
- nicku, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6The whole theme isn't dark. Just the window borders and toolbars. I think the tool bars look great dark, they really make the icons pop. I could see if the background of Nautilus was dark, but its not.
OS-X's brushed steel has less contrast in the toolbars and window borders than this. - aflaks, on 09/12/2008, -2/+7themes are merely for visual purposes; try altering some core functionality of windows and see how far that gets you
- paulvq, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5Why is it called "open" source if outsiders shouldn't be allowed?
- shawnanigans, on 09/12/2008, -2/+7Yes it can be changed, but many new users won't, can't or are afraid. The default look is the look that brings people in. It is important.
- werries, on 09/12/2008, -1/+6So thats like, what, last year?
- werries, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5Vista links please! =D
- Norumeni, on 09/12/2008, -1/+5Vista's default theme is pretty dark...
- Vadi0, on 09/12/2008, -1/+5Gosh. I think having 4 Ubuntu articles on Digg in a row is making anti-Ubuntu trolls mad with fury.
(but in no way whatsoever will they stop to think about why isn't their GNU/Linux distribution of choice isn't cutting it, and will refute all reasonable arguments with fury) - srg13, on 09/12/2008, -1/+5If terminals are a '1980s' way of interacting with your computer, then why did Microsoft release their Power Shell just one or two years ago?
The terminal is an incredibly useful tool to have. In Ubuntu, you can choose to use the GUI applications that Ubuntu and Gnome provide (try using it sometime - it actually does have a GUI) or you can use the terminal - which for many tasks is far easier. - 4321234, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4Might make anti-Obama trolls mad with fury, too. Ubuntu theme articles could be classified as more "lipstick on a pig" stories.
- srg13, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4It's most likely Opera's fault if their binary didn't install on Ubuntu - you should try asking them for support.
- johndavidjack, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Dugg for zsh.
- Wreckage, on 09/12/2008, -1/+4kubuntu
Done. - andrewtheart, on 09/12/2008, -3/+6It's mainstream in the Linux community, and trust me, the presence of a terminal was probably critical to it's current momentum.
- theaceoffire, on 09/12/2008, -1/+4Except the "Aero clones" that we use have more features, require less resources, and can be changed later if we don't like how they act/look.
MS's is slow, heavy, and just not as nice as it should have been. - srg13, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Here's my desktop - it's Ubuntu and Gnome: http://www.flickr.com/photos/90974384@N00/28495982 ...
- DeadNed, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3ouch.
good point - srg13, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Here's the look I've been using for a few months (I change the background every now and then though) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/90974384@N00/28495982 ...
I really haven't found a theme I like more than Clearlooks or Glossy. They don't have that great window borders though, so I replaced mine with an emerald theme. - TheOther1, on 09/12/2008, -2/+580's command prompt? What about the 20 years before that?
- raintheory, on 09/12/2008, -3/+6since when does Apples target base have no money?
- benplaut, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Agreed, but installing a theme doesn't require su on KDE or Gnome...
- psylence, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Unfortunately the key words in articles like these, with awesome looking desktops is: "mock up".
- srg13, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3There are plenty of Vista style themes for Gnome/Compiz... Whether vista looks good though is debatable
- abbathdoom, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3Thats the whole point numbnut, at the moment the only people who use Linux are the 1% of the world who dont care about aesthetic appeal. If the Linux community want a better marketshare they need to look nice.
- theaceoffire, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3***** Air.
