- twljagflba, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Novell is actually doing a great job on this driver... Novell did make a bad mistake of joining Microsoft in bed and therefore many believe Novell is bad all around. Well, they're not. For having at least two people on any given business day working on this driver inside Novell's labs and producing these very evident results with the RadeonHD driver is great to see. Do I support what Novell is doing with Microsoft? Nope, but they are doing a nice job on this driver and I just won't ignore this driver because Microsoft and Novell like each other.
- KungFuJesus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17Novell does a ***** ton for linux. Sure, they made a shady deal with ms, but should we just ignore all the money they pour into foss projects such as gnome, compiz, x.org, etc...
- JeroenVernooij, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Give them a break dude. Novell has contributed a ***** of code to linux and many projects like GNOME.
- canthraxp, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17So far Novell has:
-Had sex (and possibly got a STD) with Microsoft
+Contributing to the AMD driver.
+Beat the crap out of the SuckingCOck group.
I'm missing something.. - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I'm glad they're working on this as fast as they are :) I have an x1600 in my laptop and this driver will be the thing that enables me to switch permanently to Linux.
- byrdgang, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Let's not attack Novell, because they hold something very important to the Linux community: intellectual property related to Unix. When that intellectual property, albeit not actually being the case, is in the wrong hands (e.g. SCO), it can produce problems for Linux.
- Myztry, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Yeah. Yeah. Microsoft dropped the soap, and Novell bent over to pick it up.
Don't think they'll be doing that again any time soon.
They also contributed the Evolution Mail Client which I'm quit found of.
Let's just hope they're a bit stronger by the time their sphincter heals. - geniusj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9mono
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Good start. :)
- v413, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7it is based on R500 which is covered under the released docs
- Rickler, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Microsoft doesn't sail in open waters they freight in closed channels controlled by them.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7So why don't you do it. You can read the register set stuff that was given out too, you know.
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What difference does it make? Since this driver is open source, unlike Microsoft's products you don't need to trust the companies developing it.
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I suspect that the TV tuners will be very close to the bottom of their list of priorities. Having a working Linux TV tuner probably won't be a big selling point for your high-end, geek-oriented graphics cards (I have a TV for watching TV on, thanks), but having working 2D and 3D graphics on Linux would be.
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I agree. Novell was bad for sleeping with Microsoft, but it is good for doing this, and also good for fighting SCO.
- amfantasy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Novell is pro-linux, and no fud from any linux fanboy can hide that.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I am trying to use this driver on my MacBook Pro, it fails to read the EDID, thus causing the screen to go blank. Can't wait for this to be resolved :)
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I guess RedHat has been bleeding money for years...
- euvirtual, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I think Novell got the specs earlier, by signing an NDA. They have a few weeks of advantage over the rest of the world but we'll probably start seeing everyone else contributing in no time.
- EnterDaMatrix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The Macbook hardware is very good and even beginning to dip within a reasonable price. OSX is a good operating system, but Linux is faster. He could feasibly compile all his Linux programs to run in OSX, but Linux is still faster and more powerful.
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I agree. Do not attack Novell as a whole, attack the bad parts, such as the Microsoft-Novell pact, while realizing that they do a lot of good things too.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Don't digg this man down, he tells the truth.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1An AIW card was quite possibly the worst card I ever had. Kept overheating continuously, I had to remove the side of the case and stick a full sized house fan there. It was the 9800AIW which was apparently crap, but that and the horrible Linux drivers I decided I would never get ATI again/ Maybe if they get decent Linux support I will but it would still need to be as good as the nVidia support (either closed or open, i like freedom but I like usable stuff more).
- fuzzynyanko, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm wondering if AMD can use their connections with NVidia to standardize a bunch of basic graphics acceleration features that both cards have anyways.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They are supposed to have 2D done by the end of this year.
- djangoxl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm eagerly waiting for them to finish. I really want to get rid of my nvidia card that is powering my adm64 system right now. Please hurry up. How can I contribute?
- muyuu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't quite understand why is Novell the most active in this work. I'd think there are many other parties more interested, from distros to AMD themselves.
- djGentoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1...SUSE (at least earlier on)...
- nkassi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, I know the support isn't great currently but I've taken the plunge I just bought a new computer with a HD2600. Hopefully they won't make me regret the choice.
- jejones, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Great! Now... when will AMD/ATI release info needed to use the TV tuners on the All-in-Wonder cards?
- LinuxKitty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2End of the year for the 2D part? Hm, okay, so I think I'll buy an Nvidia card now, and some time next year an ATI card. Just need a new card for UT2008 (was going to get something new anyway, but this is a good motivation to do it soon) that is released in November, and presently the Nvidia Linux drivers are better.
- djGentoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Microsoft committing to open source. Hah. Very funny.
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Out of interest, why would you buy a Macbook and install Linux on it? I mean, I'm a Linux fan (my own laptop runs Ubuntu), but the whole point of paying the Mac price premium is to get MacOS. If you were going to install Linux why not just buy a similar-spec laptop, cheaper, from a commodity manufacturer like Dell, HP or Sony?
- Vektuz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm happy that they're doing this. But it sounds like its 2D only for a while (At least a year or two).
- djGentoo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2|------
| Microsoft dropped the soap, and Novell bent over to pick it up.

Why were they in the same shower in the first place? - badger101101, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0One problem is that AMD has only released the most basic specs. Currently AMD is working with their attorneys to ready the rest of the specification release (ie the real intellectual property - 3D). Until this happens, Novell will have a hard time making any progress past rendering 2D.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1They are supposed to have 2D done by the end of this year.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Because Apple, Inc. is good a designing hardware, but not good at designing software.
- 35263526, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3There is no "Mac price premium". The hardware costs about the same as other OEM manufacturer offerings; Apple just sells high-end stuff, so it looks like everything is more expensive.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+9You seem to be a fan of the Abusive Monopolist. Do you like expensive low quality products?
- robitor, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2i have a radeon x1300 :(
- estvir, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2I can get Vista Home Premium for barely over $100AU which is nothing considering new games cost $120AU, I can easily spend $100AU on 1 or 2 pieces of clothing, etc.
I'm not fan of your [mostly] imaginary abusive monopoly, I'm a fan of being subjective and using what I personally like the most. Baffling, isn't it? I mean, we could always look at your history and say how you seem to be some type of FOSS fanboy who fails to realise there's a glorious real world. - codyman, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3To all those who keep basing Novell, lighten up. Yes Microsoft might have a part in their operations, however, maybe Microsoft is just using them as a way to test the waters of open source to see if a company can actually really commit to open source and profit from it.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -17/+9But apparently you believe your tin-foiled self should be allowed to be within 5 metres of a computer.
Fairs fair. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2Why Novell? There are more trustworthy companies and groups that could be developing the drivers.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -26/+7Abusive Monopolist puppet Novell should not be trusted to work on ANY Linux project.
