- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -22/+82No thanks. I'm waiting for Ubuntu Horny Hamster.
- rock4, on 10/12/2007, -9/+29copied from old tutorial and the firstscreen is not that one from feisty what a sham man
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17It's not SPAM. howtoforge makes a cohesive reference based on some research and collection and bits. It's a useful resource in general and it helps a lot of people.
- c2global, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This is a copy and paste job from the previous ubuntu version, however it is helpful for people who are learning to setup linux servers. With the new architecture my company is going to utilize ubuntu for our ruby on rails servers.
- khyberkitsune, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Damn - read the ***** description!
"This tutorial shows how to set up a Ubuntu Feisty Fawn (Ubuntu 7.04) based server that offers all services needed by ISPs and hosters: Apache web server (SSL-capable), Postfix mail server with SMTP-AUTH and TLS, BIND DNS server, Proftpd FTP server, MySQL server, Courier POP3/IMAP, Quota, Firewall, etc."
You don't have to read more than 17 words to see "Ubuntu Feisty Fawn based server" right there in front of your face.
Dugg down. - kirker187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm getting sick of finding your comments about spam on every Linux tutorial. Enjoy the site and quit trying to expose people for spam. Some of us enjoy HowToForge articles.
- kaph, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9@mahler (#6255502)
Next time perhaps, read the article? Howtoforge has always revamped its old "perfect setup" pages because they are aware of the the fact that rewriting something from scratch is a waste of time, take open source programming for example....... RTFA next time. - jacko1990, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Oh really?
What's this then?

Who said anything about paying? - ViperDaimao, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14I was hopping for Ubuntu Hungry Hungry Hippos
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"All services needed by ISPs and hosters"?
I love (X|K|N)ubuntu like it's part of my family. It works great for both desktop and SOHO-servers.
But no matter how many cool features it has, and no matter how easy it is to install, it is not enterprise-class server material YET. It takes more stability and more enterprise features to accomplish that. They are basically taking the bleeding-edge version of Debian and adding more stuff for end-users, and ease of setup. This does not equate to a better server platform. The best feature of Ubuntu at the moment is the support offered by Canonical. It would make a feasible desktop replacement for the desktop. Enterprise customers use an OS on servers only after it has had a few years bake time to work out the bugs and get patched. They are called "Enterprise" because the have thousands of servers which they rely on to perform millions of dollars worth of transactions. Great for the desktop, but IMO you can't ADD more features to debian and call it enterprise-class.
/spoilsport - coit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Are they skipping the Groping Gnome edition then?
- teddyjones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6> what is the use.
Have you setup a Linux server? then you should know that the setup for every release is different. For example I updated my office mail server today from Ubuntu 6.10 to 7.04 and the options in the sasl configuration file changed. If you give a newbie a howto for edge, he wont be able to setup the same thing for feisty when some file locations and variable names have changed. - strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Everything in your post is entirely true. You're not being a spoil sport in my opinion.
- leftfield, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3quoth the server '4 oh 4'
- darkixion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not quite perfect in my eyes. You'd have to swap MySQL for PostgreSQL.
- theroyalweman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i am intrigued by you Ubuntu Ultimate Ultimate Ultimate edition and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
- Soccrmastr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2People who use Ubuntu think they're so cool, "Hey I use Linux, I'm super tech and smart!" is what they say. Ubuntu is so easy, my own grandma could do it. You're not special if you use Ubuntu. To really learn and experience Linux use something like Gentoo. Then go to Ubuntu later, with a greater understanding of how everything works.
- huygens, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think is far from a perfect setup for a server!!!
First they enable root account
Then they make MySQL unsecure
Then they install a development environment!!
Then they make you lose...
:-( sad, but all the mistakes done on the previously so much unperfect setup for Edgy was duplicated for Feisty...
Check this link for some criticism: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2360296&postcount=10 - orbit1979, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks, I'll give that a try.
I should mention that in spite of those issues, 7.04 did instantly recognize my NTFS partitions and automatically set up access. In the past installations failed to do this. For me this is a big deal, it saved me a lot of time. Setting access manually is a tedious pain. - strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hibernate & Suspend always take some figuring out. I fixed suspend by changing 1 option in 1 file - it has something to do with ATI cards. What kind of video card do you have? If you have an ATI card go here to fix suspending: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ATI_Mobility_FireGL_V5200
For a how to on installing ATI's proprietary video card driver, fglrx, go here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI
If your card doesn't fit into the list of cards on the fglrx page, you can learn how to effectively install the open source video card drivers here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver
The latter page also details how to configure your xorg.conf to get proper resolutions etc. Hope this helps. If you still have problems feel free to send me a message on AIM or post in ubuntuforums.org - RandaII, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4the perfect setup is to install any distro besides ubuntu. ubuntu is a pofs and only sheep use it. Its the same people when you tell them that the pill will make you feel better and then its just a placebo . its all in your head that ubuntu is any good. But hey that's what you get when you put a bunch of arrogant users together
- foodkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2what a load of crap, at least re-do your screenshots instead of blatant copy and pasting from your "Perfect 6.10 Setup"
- spikedad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Just ran a network upgrade of 7.04 into Ultimate Edition 1.2.Perfect! Everything works fine. That will do until Ultimate 1.4 is finished soon. For news on Ultimate check with http://ubuntusoftware.info/
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you're going to spam your blog, you should at least spell it correctly. I actually tagged the post on broadcom wireless cards though.
- orbit1979, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I actually gave 7.04 a try last night. So far, this version is even more buggy than 6.10. Hibernate and Stand-by STILL do not work properly (are they ever going to fix this?). Widescreen 1440x900 still fails to work by default or through the user-interface (it still has to be manually edited). Several errors accured during use. I guess my box is "cursed" or something.
- c0ldfusi0n, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4If you happen to have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop, be sure to check out this great site: http://unbutu1501.blogspot.com for a complete thorough walkthrough on how to set up Ubuntu on it.
- iheardthat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2... And I thought my Friday night was gonna suck!
- JSchwage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm really liking Feisty Fawn. I actually got the new desktop effects and even installed Beryl and had it working perfectly all from just the Live CD. None of this was possible on my computer with 6.10.
- FattyCorpuscle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I thought Grumpy Gimp was up next? I'll be waiting for the Masturbating Meerkat release
- zmur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i've got a n00b question, i'm trying to boot from the cd but when the menu comes up i don't know what to choose
how can try out ubuntu without installing it ?
(i'm 100% sure this is live cd) - spider418, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>> Is there a key labeled "รถ"?
Damn it! I'm stuck... - skiloup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What is this "ubuntu" people are speaking of?
Has it ever been discussed on digg before? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i tried to install feisty yesterday on here and it got halfway through booting the live cd then X failed completely and i was left with a nice red error screen that actually made the old BSOD look tasteful,
kubuntu just left me with a blank screen,
its funny because 6.10 worked fine but the new version wont even boot >. - richbradshaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Do you mean Gutsy Gibbon?
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The only thing Ubuntu was ever good for was the hundreds of free cd's i ordered to cover my wall.
- masskurec, on 03/04/2009, -0/+0isn't there a linux article that is not related to ubuntu?
http://xptweak.net - crossers, on 07/16/2008, -0/+0It is helpful for people who are learning to setup Linux servers.

http://www.chasr.org/ - jacko1990, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Any sign of an 'Ultimate Edition' of this release on the horizon yet?
- skeeloson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Ubuntu blows. No digg
- gugin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I need the new beta Goats gone wild
- richbradshaw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1What is the point of it? Why not just install what you need? It's not like everyone wants every bit of software installed...
I could make Ubuntu Ultimate Ultimate Ultimate edition that includes every bit of software in the repositories installed. Bu t why would anyone want it... - strabes, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7There's only two versions of every ubuntu release: desktop and server. Both contain everything you need and cost nothing unlike OS X. There is no "ultimate edition" that you have to pay for, unlike Windows. Dominated.
- aldenhg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2No, I want Hyper Hyrax!
- reha, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4digg is becoming one of the waste website.howtoforge guys are just copying and pasting old articles for every release of every distribution what is the use.Every time it will goes front page now howtoforge is doing business instead of helping community
you can literally see this infront of your eyes - tenderstorm, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5Perfect SPAM! Unbeatable.
- Hans1967, on 10/12/2007, -29/+18A very well written howto for the populair Ubuntu Linux distribution.
Recomended! - mahler, on 10/12/2007, -26/+4This is not my idea of a perfect setup. Also burried, because the title did not include the fact that this was about a server setup.
- rock4, on 10/12/2007, -35/+7again started howtoforge scam
Hans1967 why do you want to leave comment only for howtoforge article anyone can guss you are from howtoforge what a shame from howtoforge
