We are talking about building a system, not auto-installing one and get 30% of what the tutorial covers. - migla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6If you fetch all the dvd-images, you won't have to fetch packages :)
- redrebel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Er, why digg him down? He's right, debian is slightly trickier when doing an install from scratch but in the end that's what makes it so great.
- kd1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm so glad Etch is stable. I had been building a LAMP server but wanted MySQL 5, PHP4, and Apache2.2 and I had to muck with the sources.list to pull the appropriate packages.
Etch solves that issue for me. - DesuKN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was more irked by the fact that proftpd was used, whereas pure-ftpd is just better.
I'll probably get around to following this tutorial for fun. I just need the smallest case I can find so it sits neatly next to the router. - bluntarski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Debian 4 with Xfce is the bomb baby. Ubuntu is Debian Jr - Perfect for kiddies but not for the big boys.
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ubuntu isn't so good for a server, and that was never its goal. Debian, Slackware, the *BSDs, etc have always been the best alternatives for a server, or for any computer that doesn't need X (but might have it), and has to be up as long as possible. Ubuntu (and a beta version of it) is not stable enough ("stable" here means "the packages won't change") for this kind of setup.
- Hans1967, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Great howto for a great OS!
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Sweet I was waiting for a HowtoForge guide for Debian 4.0. I am going to be using this one to setup a computer that I am going to be using for my senior project.
- InsaneMachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, the site is asking for money to allow to view the page as printer friendly. That is sad.
- vanchuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While I certainly agree with your statement, my customers (who only know how to FTP by opening a site in Windows Explorer), would viciously disagree!
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6If there's a system that requires fetching a lot of packages and setup, it's probably Debian. But its size is what makes it so powerful and attractive. Other similar howto's for bloated distributions aren't quite as important as this one.
- gurx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0mmm, and if you want a Qmail Server with Vpopmail: http://www.gurx.net/index.php?sec=documentacio&element=31
- orlyfactor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Qmail > Postfix
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2@aldenhq:
You realize Ubuntu is just Debian with less packages and an orange theme, right? - cdcarter, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1This is a great tutorial, except it installs an FTP server. Which is soooo last millenia, please use SFTP, be secure
- c0ldfusi0n, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1You misspelled Eft.
- aldenhg, on 10/12/2007, -18/+5Or you could always go with Feisty.
Digg me down, but you know I'm right.
