- benologist, on 11/22/2008, -2/+72I for one never get tired of tutorials teaching us how to install and use Ubuntu.
Or sarcasm. - peestandingup, on 11/22/2008, -4/+56Yeah, everyone needs 10 audio players, don't they??
- eidolontubes, on 11/22/2008, -2/+48too many redundant apps.
- l800LEMMINGS, on 11/22/2008, -2/+34i tried ubuntu studio and while it looks more beautiful then the default ubuntu themes and has the programs i would install preinstalled i found it to be a little more buggy then the standard and things just didn't work as well. Also for a studio based program i was disappointed in the driver support or there for lack of for various sound cards and other interactive studio equipment. At the time my line 6 podxt even had better support on standard ubuntu then studio.
- bigbangbuddha, on 11/22/2008, -2/+32I'm a big Ubuntu and Linux, but using 17 media player apps? Seriously?
- MCA2142, on 11/22/2008, -1/+22Vista fans will stick with Vista since they are fans.
Good candidates for the switch would be the people that are turned off by Vista. - twiztidsinz, on 11/22/2008, -0/+20C'mon, leave him alone.
It's obvious that he accidentally the whole thing. - inactive, on 11/22/2008, -2/+18Why can't ubuntu studio have a nice gui install like regular ubuntu?
- jaxter2010, on 06/17/2009, -8/+24GIMP!=Photoshop (maybe for recreation but nothing commercial)
Other than that--a good list. - PaulRay, on 11/22/2008, -0/+15This guy's article has way too many redundant installs.
F-Spot and Picasa, Amarok and Rhythmbox, etc. He needs to make it clear that these are choices. As it is, he seems to be telling you to install the whole library. This is not a good way to get people to use FOSS.
I like the look of ubuntu Studio, but it's not as stable (in my experience) as regular ubuntu or even Kubuntu.
Kubuntu would probably be a better choice for Windows users since KDE feels more like Windows. Again, just my opinion based on experience. - inactive, on 11/22/2008, -13/+28Who are we kidding here? Windows has always been free. Go ahead and bury me you hypocrites.
- jm1234567890, on 11/22/2008, -0/+12You're a big Ubuntu and Linux ???
- Lemonblood, on 11/22/2008, -1/+13If you have a good enough system you will be able to run it. Almost all steam games work with Wine. Left 4 Dead is reported to get sub-par performance unless you play on low settings, but with a new build of wine released recently I'm sure all that will change.
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=v ... - trogdoor, on 11/22/2008, -1/+12Can we please stop it with these "Perfect Desktop" and "Does everything you can do on windows" articles, and especially combinations of the two like this? Linux is not perfect, and it's not windows, telling people otherwise will just leave them with a bad taste when they realize it for themselves.
- srg13, on 11/22/2008, -3/+14That might be funny if it had any grain of truth to it, but in reality it's just an old stereotype and downright false.
- saejinn, on 11/22/2008, -2/+12Even if Windows WAS offered for free it still lacks a lot of capabilities Linux has. Granted you could say the reverse for Linux, but Linux really IS free (not having to use keygens, cracks and bypass genuine advantage for security updates).
Linux could be free but utter trash. The fact that it's so competitive against Windows and Apple AND still free puts it over the top. There's a reason Apple doesn't have a "Hi I'm Linux" "Hi I'm a Mac" commercials. - Nephyrin, on 11/22/2008, -1/+11The Mac OS does NOT use the linux kernel, it uses a modified Mach kernel with BSD components called the XNU kernel.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XNU - honesttussey, on 11/22/2008, -3/+13Neat article except...
"Azureus/Vuze - Java Bittorrent client " - limezor2, on 11/22/2008, -33/+43Yeah because everybody is going to switch from Vista to I-Can't-Install-A-Screensaver-Without-Opening-The-*****-Command-Line: 8.10
But at least its free, right? - DigitalisAkujin, on 11/22/2008, -0/+9Because a bootable install is in the "required" category and the LiveCD installer is in the "nice to have" category.
You always need a bootable install because it's not 100% that the LiveCD will always work due to some PC configs. - PaulRay, on 11/22/2008, -13/+22WTF? Click: Main Menu/Preferences/Screensaver. Pick one, done. Idiot!
- Nicoon, on 11/22/2008, -3/+12Even though I'm a ubuntu user myself, it's not a full-fledged replacement for windows. That's why I dual-boot.
- Nimda11, on 11/22/2008, -2/+10Is it just me or do the fonts for most distro's look like absolute *****?
- AboveandBeyond, on 11/22/2008, -5/+13In ubuntu you do because none of them offer all the functionalities...and when one of crashes, you already have another one launched.
- bigbangbuddha, on 11/22/2008, -0/+8*fan - big Ubuntu and Linux FAN. ;-P
Next time I'll use one of my 24 grammar checking apps. - Moogle, on 11/22/2008, -2/+10As a graphics designer myself, I can agree with you wholeheartedly on that comment.
Gimp does not equal Photoshop, and as far as it goes now, it never will. Photoshop is dozens and dozens of times more complex than Gimp and is home to thousands of features Gimp just simply doesn't offer. Moreover, Gimp is overall a messy program to begin with. Being someone who has attempted to use Gimp as a replacement for my lovely Photoshop in the past, I know for a fact that Gimp is just much less organized, unprofessional and impractical when it comes to designing anything of real / serious value.
Perhaps a photo touch up here and there and a forum signature is what Gimp is made for, but large scale or professional works should be left to Photoshop. Of course I honor Gimp's open source community for offering free software for people, but the same altruistic gesture is what leaves Gimp so... "gimped" when it comes to functionality.
When you aren't paying your workers and the developers aren't working under the idea that they won't be able to pay their bills if they don't perform as expected; they simply won't try as hard. Even in the case that someone did dedicate their life to Gimp, one could also reasonably assume that the best coders still remain with Adobe, why? Well because logically, the best of the best generally do not offer their services for free. - DigitalisAkujin, on 11/22/2008, -0/+7It reflects the fact that there are no obvious favorites in the linux application pool.
- omgorange, on 11/22/2008, -2/+9Buried, the author has already published this article: http://howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-ubuntu-8 ...
With the one dugg by the op, the guy simply inserted the word "Studio" in front of "Ubuntu" and removed the word "Intrepid/Ibex" where applicable. - wastern, on 11/22/2008, -2/+9I was thinking the same thing. 1998 called, they want their installer back
- MCA2142, on 11/22/2008, -1/+8@ Teobote
Mac OS doesn't use a linux kernel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_os_x
"That's just the simple truth." - mynameistux, on 11/22/2008, -0/+7yet, look how XP installs. On a side note, that is the alternative installer, by default, ubuntu installs by putting a user into a live environment, so you can try before you install.
- arjie, on 11/22/2008, -1/+8I see you made a irony with your comment.
- Sahtor, on 11/22/2008, -1/+7Thats a lot of programs you don't actually need. Pick 1 good for a task. (rhythmbox = banshee = amarok)
- smotpoker, on 11/22/2008, -2/+8@teo - Apple uses a bsd-kernel, not a Linux kernel.
@galaxy - Linux is a very big threat to MS and Apple. The *only* reason it is not very competitive is vendor lockin, ignorance/stubbornness and no marketing
@beno - There are literally millions who disagree and illustrate that disagreement daily (Not to mention key MS and Apple developers/executives who have copied *nix features, expressed worry over Linux specifically and actively tried to hinder their efforts multiple times over the years) - badfishmedia, on 11/22/2008, -1/+7Again, not my perfect desktop but this is awesome.
- deadbaby, on 11/22/2008, -2/+7That dark GTK/Gnome theme is atrocious.
- smotpoker, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5@beno - All around the world. Linux is quite popular in Latin America and several Scandinavian countries. In conjunction with the enthusiasts, professionals and a fair number of casual users in every country, I don't think it's inaccurate to estimate over a million desktop users at least.
Besides this, there are at least a few hundred million PC users in this country with substantially more around the world. If you believe Linux has even a 1% marketshare, that alone equates to at least a couple million users.
I would not suggest it is more popular than Windows but likely it is more popular than OSX in many countries due to expense and poor economies there. - srg13, on 11/22/2008, -1/+6hara001, aren't you talking about Windows? Media player can't play anything except for some AVIs and WMVs, so you need Quicktime and/or VLC.
On Linux though, all you need one of either VLC, MPlayer or Totem, each of which can pretty much play anything... - magic6435, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5Needs Photoshop and Textmate and then I'm all game but until then Linux will be relegated to my media center (boxee and XBMC) and old laptops.
- sado196, on 11/22/2008, -2/+6Yup... that's unfair. Screensavers are easier now. Now uninstalling things... you tell me how to do that in a click or two.
- hijstr, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4download the "Dust Theme" for normal 8.10 if you want a decent looking Ubuntu setup. It's by far the nicest and well detailed theme I've used for linux anyway
also if you are still missing essential windows programs, why not use VirtualBox or some similar virtualisation program to run windows inside linux? - MCA2142, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5Because we all have that kind of time?
- stopbrorape, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4Left 4 Dead is the *****.
- MrShinra, on 11/22/2008, -2/+6I require the following in order for me to use Ubuntu:
- Supports the Nvidia Ge Force Go 7600 GPU. Last time I tried it out, it bugged out on me.
- Tying in with the above: Supports Gaming (I've heard of Wine but I'd prefer native running games) and MMOs/Steam (Stuff which streams data to and from the internet)
- Supports Adobe Photoshop or the complete Adobe CS. Do _NOT_ suggest Gimp to me, I cannot use a program with such a horrible interface as that. - inactive, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4Yes. It appears I was mistaken.
- will27, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5A good point. I attempted to uninstall something just now, and since I have to click Applications/"Add/Remove..." and then click on the name of software I want to uninstall I conclude that uninstalling things in "a click or two" is not something that could be easily achieved in ubuntu. Until they fix this requirement to click 3 or more times to get basic tasks such as this done, I can't see this linux thing catching on.
/sarcasm - PixelEater, on 11/22/2008, -2/+6Ow, my eyes.
- holyskeleton, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4I don't even use half of those stupid ***** listed. I mean they are good and all but I just don't use them.
- Sokkratez, on 11/22/2008, -3/+6Don't forget games. And don't bring up Wine... anything I've been able to get to run under Wine has run slow as molassus and has eventually crashed. Just the other day I had to run the Steam installer five times before it would update without freezing, and then it ***** its pants when I tried to download a game. All I really wanted to use were the Community features, so I gave up on the game and tried to use chat. I couldn't see anything people were typing to me, even though I had msttcorefonts installed.
I'll agree that Linux is great for being free (I use Mint on my notebooks) but to say that it can be a "full-fledged replacement" for Windows is a fallacy. It's like saying perserverence and a peg leg are a full-fledged replacement for a real leg. I feel embarrassed for the OS' cause every time I see hyperbolic articles like this that try to pass it off as the last OS that anybody will ever need. - lowtolerance, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3most bloated bittorrent client ever, i might add
