- MuskokasFinest, on 11/04/2008, -10/+75Does the perfect desktop always have 10 media/audio players?
- Vadi0, on 11/04/2008, -13/+77Personally, I wouldn't consider that 'perfect'.
- alexiadeath, on 11/04/2008, -5/+45Heh, Im a linux fan, but even I would not say its perfect. It just is better than anything else that Ive tried:)
- wastern, on 11/05/2008, -2/+30if you want to do a software overview, call it that. This is redundant. F-Stop and Picasa? Thunderbird and Evolution? Firefox and Opera? Azureus and BitTornado? A stupid number of media players?
All that does is confuse new users and make them not want to try Linux out. The exchange goes like this..
newb: my computer sucks
tux: get linux
newb: ok where
tux: well first pick a distro
newb: ok...whats that?
tux: *gives link to distowatch*
newb: so now I'm ready
tux: no. now pick a window manger
newb: huh?
tux: gnome, kde, xfce, blah, blah, blah...links, links, links
newb: umm...
tux: linux gives you choice to use what you like
newb: ok, I got it all installed I want to play some music
tux: well pick one of these 10 great media players and install the mp3 codec and you're good to go
newb: what? Whats best? Why are all these others here if they aren't as good?
tux: linux is great and gives you exactly what you want
newb: ***** this
choice is great, but people don't always know what they want until its given to them. That was the beauty of Ubuntu, they gave you 1 disk with 1 office suite, 1 bit torrent client, 1 browser, etc. The 4 disk distros of Red Hat, Suse, Mandrake, and others were just too much for people to jump into. Thats why Ubuntu is taking off like it is - 16777216, on 11/05/2008, -3/+28Funny, because on XP I had:
1: Winamp for NSV.
2: Media Player Clasic for most stuff.
3: Windows Media Player because it was included.
4: some DVD player that I can't remember the name of because I liked the interface and other features.
5: The A/V stuff that NERO installs. ( Hell I should count it as 5,6,&,7. )
6: The DVD player that my DVD drive drivers insisted I install. ( That's a mouthful. )
On Ubuntu.
1: Rhythmbox because it is preinstalled.
2: Amarok because it's ***** awesome.
3: Totem because it is preinstalled.
4: VLC because it's ***** awesome.
5: Xine because I want to. - SnowCrashv5, on 11/04/2008, -8/+33I'm so tired of HowToForge's "Perfect Desktop" and "Perfect Server" articles. All they do is go over how to install applicaitons. Why not just a simple guide on dpkg and aptitude and cover it all and let the user cater their box to their needs.
- badfishmedia, on 11/04/2008, -3/+20Not MY perfect desktop but I give this HowDo huge kudos for having such complete and "newbie-friendly" instructions. Big Kudos for help migrating your old Windows desktop to a virtual one using VMware Converter. I did not even know that was possible. A+!
- tdwester, on 11/04/2008, -8/+24That is a little over kill.
- brettalton, on 11/04/2008, -1/+16I use a simple and small script to:
(a) Add medibuntu and wine repositories
(b) Update and upgrade Ubuntu
(c) Install certain programs/libraries that I like to have on a fresh install
Give them a try, modify them and enjoy =)
No need for four pages of instructions...
8.04 (Hardy Heron): http://staging.altonlabs.com/ubuntu/hardy.sh
8.10 (Intrepid Ibex): http://staging.altonlabs.com/ubuntu/intrepid.sh - Herolint, on 11/05/2008, -2/+16Why yes it should. Good thing Ibex does or it wouldn't have qualified for perfection.
- Cole2026, on 11/05/2008, -0/+11KDE4.1 could be superior to Gnome, but it is not. I have KDE4.1 Vanilla running on arch (and have tried Kubuntu with 4.1), and it is absolutely unstable and buggy. Gnome is far more usable and stable, albeit it may not look as nice.
- Ganpachi, on 11/05/2008, -3/+13Perfect implies there is no room for improvement. Playing games is important to me and many others. Thus it is not perfect.
But that doesn't mean I won't enjoy it for what it is!!! - TheOther1, on 11/05/2008, -1/+11Yeah, I want my IM client to do 497 FPS in full screen...
- inactive, on 11/05/2008, -0/+10No that ain't. 8.10 is pretty good, but not "perfect".
- paul21, on 11/04/2008, -1/+10I wouldn't put XMMS as a Winamp 2 replacement. I'd put Audacious which is a new generation media player with full support of Winamp 2 skins.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audacious_Media_Playe ... - strupatn, on 11/05/2008, -11/+20Shouldn't a perfect desktop also play sounds out-of-the-box? I think it should.
- Herolint, on 11/05/2008, -0/+8I completely agree.
One thing that I think Ibex does absolutely perfectly is Japanese input. Once it is set up, it works beautifully. The best part is that Ubuntu separates the keyboard mappings and IMEs so I can input Japanese characters using the Dvorak layout. Neither Windows or OS X can do that. - HonestAbe, on 11/05/2008, -0/+7I've been using Ubuntu for almost two years, and it ain't even close to perfect.
- freezerburn666, on 11/04/2008, -4/+10article should be titled how to add bloatware to your ubuntu desktop
- TheOther1, on 11/05/2008, -1/+7What have you contributed so far?
- frazw, on 11/05/2008, -0/+6Hmm I kinda don't want my Graphics card maxed out by a messenger app. That's like the films of the early nineties, all special effects no story, when the story is the important bit.
If using 3D features enhances functionality then great but don't just do it for the sake of it.
I've never really felt the OS look and feel made that much difference really. It's like learning to drive and then switching cars. You know what you need to do, it's just a matter of relearning the controls. I can switch OS's easily and it doesn't really affect my productivity because they are all similar enough.
For me there are only three things which have held me back from going 100% linux.
Games. Wine don't cut it yet, it works for a lot, but I don't see why I should miss out on some games just because I stubbornly refuse to use windows which works for what I need almost all the time.
Office + Endnote. I need these. A lot of document exchange goes on and trading of endnote libraries. Using Open Office just isn't an option. If I had the new version of Endnote I could switch but I don't.
Hardware. Specifically my MP3 player. I made a mistake buying it but I'm stuck with it and I need windows to sync it. - mercurysquad, on 11/05/2008, -0/+6He has:
2 photo editor/managers
2 web browsers
2 torrent clients
2 word processors / page layout apps
2 pdf readers (adobe + evince)
50 media players
2 disk rippers
2 disk burners
3 web dev / html editors
... - crazyjake, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5anyone else having problems with ati cards and compiz??
- W16three, on 11/04/2008, -2/+7I agree with your "cheap" assessment; however, you can spend some time changing around the settings to suit your needs. Not everyone has time for that, though.
- smotpoker, on 11/04/2008, -2/+7When was the last time you actually installed it though? I know in the past I had to manually download and install madwifi to support atheros upon install or system upgrade of debian and ubuntu but the last two times I did it, the upgrade/installation was automatic (though it did let me know the drivers were non-free). I think I saw it act similarly with broadcom drivers too but I may be confusing some details...
Not to discredit your comment, just thinking if you didn't try a recent version you could be complaining about a problem that has already been resolved. - xaera, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5I've been using Ubuntu solidly at work for just under 2 years as my desktop (I'm a sysadmin for a small organisation). While it works really nicely once all the little bumps are ironed-out it isn't perfect. I really do like the SuSE desktop for it's general layout, but that's probably a preferential thing - I just can't stand YaST's retardedness, though it has improved substantially over the last few years.
I use Win XP x64 at home most of the time (games are the typical difficulty but the ones I play can be played with Ubuntu - but not brilliantly well). Overall each has it's advantages from a pragmatic view, but neither could be called perfect. - HonestAbe, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5anyone else having problems with nvidia cards and compiz??
- kambiz, on 11/05/2008, -1/+5Neither do I. Far from it. I upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 and no longer have a working mouse. Useless to have a desktop and fancy GUI with no mouse to control it.
- m85476585, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4Who would want Adobe Reader?
- motang, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4I have an ATi Xpress 200M in my laptop and compiz works fine, and I have an nVidia 8600 in my desktop and that wroks fine with compiz as well. I do hope the issues would be resolved soon for you guys.
- darkcompass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4Tested 8.10 in my hp laptop - no go, wireless for me is still broken. For General Use, and browsing then I personally think Ubuntu is fine, then again gOS is fine as well.
- Z3r0t0l0rEnCe, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4I've used Ubuntu, Mandrake and XP. If I had to choose between the three I would be Ubuntu. Windows XP is a ***** virus, spyware happy OS thats what made me change to Linux. Since using Linux I've been able to get my wireless to work and everything else. Yes it took some time but it made it more worth it once ever thing was done. Since then I haven't looked back on M$ since then. The only M$ pieces that I have are my Xbox 360 and my Zune thats it. To call it perfect...NO. But to say that the transition was a better choice that continuing with M$...HELL YES!
- Sokkratez, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4I installed 8.10 and my wireless card doesn't work when it did in 8.04. Granted, connectivity was total ass and I had to get ndiswrapper and XP drivers to connect at full speed, but at least I was somewhat connected so that I could get ndiswrapper after about 30 minutes of downloading.
It works by plugging it in under Windows. Not perfect.
I use Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu. It comes with ndiswrapper preinstalled with a directory that contains a variety of proprietary wireless drivers. This is closer to perfect. - domness, on 11/04/2008, -7/+11Although I am an avid Ubuntu Linux user, I wouldn't say it's the perfect desktop. For my Sony Vaio, I need to install the drivers for the Wireless AGAIN before I can even use it. This means going onto Windows, downloading them, logging into Ubuntu, copying the drivers and installing them. A process taking more time than it needs.
Apart from the above, the original themes always seem to make it feel... cheap (apart from being free lol). If Ubuntu came with a theme that made it feel professional and good to use (and worked with more programs that it currently does - WINE does not always work as well as it should), then I would be a little happier.
Also, Pidgin and aMSN feel a little... on the cheap side as well. I want applications that use my graphics card to the max.
Don't get me wrong, I do love Ubuntu, but I always feel that I am using a childish OS with the lack of certain features. - srg13, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4If it were legal to do that, they would - the only reason you have to spend five seconds installing them (three clicks or something) the first time is because of stupid US software patents and your DMCA (for circumventing the CSS protection on DVDs).
- srg13, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4It does have Bluetooth support, and it ships with the latest Gnome... What are you on about?
- alexiadeath, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4That desire to have your graphics used to the max to display eyecandy is imho "childlish" in itself. I want my graphics card used to the max when Im using it to play games or do stuff with blender. the rest of the time, it better just be snappy.
I agree on amsn and Pidgin beoing cheap lookin tho. I use Kopete :) - InuX, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4Dugg you up. He's installing way too many apps that do the same thing.
# Amarok - audio player
# Banshee - audio player, can encode/decode various formats and synchronize music with Apple iPods
# MPlayer - media player (video/audio), supports WMA
# Rhythmbox Music Player - audio player, similar to Apple's iTunes, with support for iPods
# XMMS - audio player similar to Winamp
# VLC Media Player - media player (video/audio)
# Helix Player - media player, similar to the Real Player
# Totem - media player (video/audio)
# Xine - media player, supports various formats; can play DVDs
How many audio players do you need?!! - benswanson1, on 11/04/2008, -2/+6I like ubuntu but it is not perfect maybe closer than one un-named os which has a large market share
- ethana2, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3Gotta be honest here, mine goes more like this:
'my computer sucks'
'how old is it?'
'pentium 4?'
'Ubuntu.' - ethana2, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3YES. READ THE FRICKING PAGE OR I PULL THE TRIGGER!
READ IT NOW !!1¡¹! - lapubell, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2Last time we installed vista at work, it took about 4 hours to get to the desktop. That might have been HPs fault with their stupid recovery cd, but with the script listed aboveyou could have your desktop fully installed and software installed without going to multiple software vendors to get their stuff.
also free means more than just cost. - Mohdoo, on 11/05/2008, -1/+4Sorry, it isn't a perfect OS.
- HonestAbe, on 11/05/2008, -1/+4Are you this much fun in real life, too?
- SuperMoses, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3Ya.. and if he's going to list torrent clients, he should have added Deluge. It's the uTorrent clone.
- Heywoodj, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3Yes. It seems 3D support for a lot of nvidia cards in the new X is missing.
X-org is trying to reverse engineer the software( that will take awhile) and I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a binary blob from nvidia.
I will be shopping for a decent ATI card tomorrow.
Any suggestions? - isaacasimov, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3its perfection in progress.
- inactive, on 11/05/2008, -3/+6Ubuntu - the perfectly flawed desktop. It's always "nearly there". By the time it's 2012 it will still be "almost there" as well. Yawn!
- motang, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3This should all change with future releases, I am waiting for for a stable KDE 4 to put on my laptop.
- HonestAbe, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3A long time ago I was told to buy Nvidia for Linux because ATI wouldn't release their drivers or cooperate with open source.
Sigh. -
