- Eldoo77, on 10/27/2007, -13/+54Cue the anti-Novell rant in 3... 2... 1...
(OH NOES! They signed a deal with M$! They must be evil! etc, etc, etc...) - RichGC, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39Its a nice guide, but I cant digg it while it uses the word 'perfect' and has zero mention of games.
- ToadLeg, on 10/11/2007, -11/+42It's OpenSUSE 10.3, a nice version of Linux, but no version of Linux is "perfect".
- thebigmatay, on 10/10/2007, -14/+35At least if we're going to get setup guide I'm glad it's for a Linux distro that isn't Ubuntu.
- hockey, on 10/27/2007, -1/+21The version of Linux I use is perfect for me!
Isn't that what it's all about anyway?
:) - NerveBand, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24I know the community is pissed at Novell but they attempted to enable interoparability. I think they deserve some sort of kudos that Microsoft is keeping integration withiin linux and vice versa.
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20actually, it would be better if the Open Source community would get their ***** together and stop forking everything like its a damn code orgy.
- estvir, on 10/10/2007, -7/+23schestowitz beat you by over an hour.
Valiant effort though. - keyo, on 10/10/2007, -22/+36With all the things novell did for linux why did they have to go against linux and sign that deal?
- Waiting2awake, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17 I think the idea is that the vast majority of people will never, ever, use 50% of what Photoshop does. Other than those people within th eindustry, or starting out, or avid photo-philes, Photoshop is like killing a bug with a bazooka. Gimp, will work for those other people that just need a quick photo editing system occassionally.
Like OpenOffice and MS office. MS is clearly much more advanced and with options out the wazoo. But yet again, the vast, vast, majority use a word processor for normal documents, and the occasional spreadsheet. For this, OpenOffice is great and MSOFFice is overkill.
It is all about using the right tool for the job. - Lingur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Adobe Reader? Really? Is it the same bloated software as it is in Windows?
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16The road to intelligent thought was ruined at the first attempt you made at a logical argument.
- hadak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12I like their menu there. What's it called? Is something similar available for KDE? Is it in the [k/ed/x]ubuntu repos?
- sirdaz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12The setup goes from a vivid green to a subtle blue.. bit of a change
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13signing that deal did not "go against linux." It may not have been a good move, but the deal basically allows for format support and non litigation between MS and Novell's customers. They are not protecting themselves
- Coldkill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Because you're an idiot?
- stegre, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Perfect != Skype, Flash Player, Adobe Reader.
Ok I can understand Adobe Flash, but Adobe Reader? Come on! - szym, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9"To fully replace a Windows desktop, I want the OpenSUSE 10.3 desktop to have the following software installed:
[...]
Sound & Video:
5 audio players
5 media players
5 cd/dvd rippers and burners
"
Are you serious? I know that there are fans of each and every one of these apps, but is this really required to "fully replace Windows"? - wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11All technology companies sign reciprocal patent-immunity agreements with its competitors. IBM and DEC used to club small firms over the head all the time with their patents.
Compaq as a noted example of large-firm assaults against small firms. IBM tried to sue them for their work-alike PC BIOS. Compaq ended up signing a patent licensing agreement. The same thing happened to Microsoft when they were small, the larger tech companies sued them, the result was patent licensing.
Now, every firm pursues patents in order that it can have something with which to enter reciprocal patent licensing agreements. Like it or not, there are intellectual property laws that allow for patents -- MS is not the first firm, nor is it a leader in ridiculous patents (see: Amazon's 1 click patent).
MS is not "assaulting" GNU/Linux, but getting the boilerplate legal agreements together. People who are hysterical about Novell licensing (im looking at that freak Cyberphoenix) are just children without a fraction of a clue about how the Real World works, so they invent drama. - SimonGray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7At the bottom of the page there are similar guides by the same author for other distros.
- Dochtuir, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8The $ is not a letter, and should not be used as one.
- ascheinberg, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11"All the time?" The thing JUST came out this last week. How long could you have been using it for production work?
- jakbrud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Its good to hear something nice about a distro besides Ubuntu
- kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'm studying computing/computer science at A level (it's actually BTEC.. but lets not get started..) and for graphics manipulation and learning about graphics formats and such we're taught with the gimp rather than Adobe Photoshop.
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -7/+13It's a shame really. Novell does some really cool stuff IMO.
- daftman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5he said apt/deb.
Try to read things properly before you chastise someone while making yourself looks like an idiot. - smedrick, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9I totally agree. I freakin' hate YaST.
- jonnyboy27, on 10/10/2007, -10/+15give me debian or ubuntu any day over suse. RPM is a terrible package format. apt/deb is a far more sophisticated and reliable method of software management.
- metalhead3767, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Yea. It just came out last week. Flash is on the DVD and installing it is as hard as pressing I agree on a license agreement. Dependency hell? I don't think you've even used 10.3.
- Ichiban1081, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I honestly love OpenSUSE. Someone here recommended it to me. I threw it on the wifes laptop and she loves it and it honestly sped up her machine. This is a cool guide but all of those audio players arent needed. She has the KDE version and she is already very familiar with Amarok. VMware is a must have for her.
- mrsteveman1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Not really......Ubuntu is lacking and you don't even understand why.
- Pantsuninja, on 10/21/2007, -8/+12Since when did gimp get up to photoshops level? I know it free, so it beats photoshop in usefulness per $, but overall it's not really comparable...
- nayr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4fine, yast sucks. Yum is slightly better, but it still takes a fortnight to even SEARCH for a package. And yes, rpm is broken.
And apt-get was not a ***** fork. It is an alternative from the nineties. If anything, yast came from apt-get, not the other way around.
WOOT for debian!
BTW, I like suse, I just hate the rpm package managers and rpm itself. apt-get/dpkg/deb were all designed well. - arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Oh yeah?! Well emacs - oh, wrong argument, sorry.
- darkchild, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Have you tried 10.3? The package manager has improved a lot and setting up repositories is pretty fast and painless when compared to 10.1 and 10.2. You can even setup third party repositories with just a few clicks.
- chsbrgr, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6It just wouldn't have that same Windows Desktop Replacement 'feel' without all the bloat.
- mckinnej, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4A few other folks have made a similar comment. I think it's matter of definition. My definition of a desktop is an office or home office type machine. This means email, documents, spreadsheets, databases, browsing, etc. This is apparently the same definition they're using. Linux in general has the ability to do that now and do it quite well. A game machine has entirely different requirements. Linux does not hit that mark, not if you want to play the latest games that is. It's not that Linux can't, it's just that the games aren't there. Hell, it's getting to the point where games for PCs in general are getting thin. They seem to come out for the consoles with PCs bringing up the rear, maybe.
- kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6http://en.opensuse.org/FAQ:Novell-MS
- kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5"If you want to play games go out and buy an XBox or Playstation."
That's an absurd comment. PC's are considered to be superior by many, and the PC gaming market is a HUGE market. Playing a game on a console is not the same as playing it on PC and I'm not sure if it ever will be.
But hey.. if you want to read PDF's, write documents and browse the web, why don't you just buy a mobile phone? - ashura001, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Why is he being dugg down? He just asked a question?
One that I wouldn't mind knowing the answer to as well. - euvirtual, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Maybe you should stop browsing linux/unix sections.
- l00s3r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No *****. Installing Ubuntu took me about 15 minutes. Most painless install ever.
- philtr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4"Perfect" is a very subjective word.
Also, many Windows programs just CAN'T be replaced (case in point: Photoshop). If you have lots of RAM, you could run a virtual machine. If not, you're either going to have to learn to live without or dual-boot. - mrsteveman1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They just fixed that....
- TheWolfen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That's too bad... gimp is no Photoshop replacement for anything resembling professional graphic design. Heck.. I'm no pro but gimp can't begin to handle the stuff I do in Photoshop & Illustrator. If it did, I'd consider switching to Linux on my primary desktop, but its shortcomings continue to be the #1 reason I still work in Windows.
- jdhore1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ubuntu supports RPM's:
sudo apt-get install alien
alien -i whatever.rpm - ByrdMan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The guide is meant for those who enjoy the Linux-based OS. I didn't see anywhere the article was blasting Windows or any other OS for that matter. Just a guide to help setup OpenSUSE if you use it. Come on folk....
- Sibre, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Rather than just stating your base opinion that KDE is better, how about posting why? You'd probably be less likely to be dugg down for that than just giving an opinion with no supporting statements. What is it about KDE that you prefer over Gnome?
- TypeEE, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3Why is this perfect?
- ajforgue, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3What DRM restrictions are in other operating systems?
