- RickS2, on 05/16/2008, -7/+45I think the comments changed.
- Terr01, on 05/16/2008, -0/+32Not nearly as handy as BartPE.
When I'm "The friend who knows computers", typically I'm fixing a Windows machine.
And just as typically, it's a spyware or virus issue--or at any rate, I need to check the possibility.
So I want to boot to something secure, and something that runs Windows, so that I can run *Windows* spyware scanners etc.
Virtually never have I been "called upon at a moment's notice to troubleshoot" something that needed me to deal with partitions, bad ram, or anything that low-level. A majority of people's complaints are in the higher level, in software. "It's slow", "Windows keep popping up", "I can't install my webcam"... - t3hbagel, on 05/16/2008, -0/+22You mean booting from USB?
If it can boot windows, it can boot linux. - rlray216, on 05/16/2008, -5/+29Looks handy!
- oldhick, on 05/16/2008, -0/+16Boot USB, not Linux, apologies.
- marksands07, on 05/16/2008, -0/+15I still use Hiren's, even though it's considered warez..
- oldhick, on 05/16/2008, -7/+21This is pretty old news but not bad. Unfortunately, the one time I could have used this to be helpful, the PC's BIOS wasn't capable of booting from Linux.
But you can have some fun stealing passwords with this and wreaking havoc. - iDiggIt42, on 05/16/2008, -0/+13You can delete comments now, you know...
- oldhick, on 05/16/2008, -0/+10Yes, my bad... That was a huge brain fart.
- CaviMike, on 05/16/2008, -2/+12What good is this if the system can't boot from a USB port?
- Stalks, on 05/16/2008, -0/+10Hirens is awesome. And although its an unfair comparison, it blows Ultimate BootCD out the water.
- mal1964, on 05/16/2008, -2/+11That blue screen gives me the creeps!
- unusualbob, on 05/16/2008, -2/+11ya, just maybe...
HOLY ***** 5 MINUTE EDIT
(and if you refresh the page you dont lose the edit) - Dunnix, on 05/16/2008, -1/+9Trinity Rescue Kit is my main tool. http://trinityhome.org/Home/index.php?wpid=1&front ...
Good to have the right tool, depending on the situation. =) - CaviMike, on 05/16/2008, -0/+8I'm still a bit nervous with the new comment system. I think it's watching me...
- rfquinn, on 05/16/2008, -0/+7I'm sure most people who don't know about Hiren's Boot CD will scroll right on by your post. Listen up people - Hiren's is the most fantastic boot CD/USB image eva!
- Skooma714, on 05/16/2008, -0/+6Wrong story noob.
- aztuscani, on 05/16/2008, -2/+8System Rescue CD is also very handy.
- zephyr42, on 05/16/2008, -0/+5*cheers*
- metamorfoza, on 05/16/2008, -1/+6Great tool...provided that BIOS has the support to boot from USB.... and unfortunately when I am called to fix computers of my relatives/friends or when they just flag an issue on a dinner table with casual "can you look my computer after this, something is wrong with it" .revealing their true intentions for their "we would like you to come" dinner invitation..... they are usually the systems at least 2-3 years old, some even older with no USB booting option(s). which means that I have to come again...and..nah, screw it - long story.
great tool anyway.. - flyingcatcircus, on 05/16/2008, -0/+5I second that. Knoppix has saved my life (and files) a few times.
- antdude, on 05/16/2008, -0/+5Then, you don't ever want to use Word Perfect for DOS. :)
- antdude, on 05/16/2008, -0/+5KNOPPIX too.
- oldhick, on 05/16/2008, -1/+5Yeah, just buy two usb sticks.
- Wargalas, on 05/16/2008, -1/+5I just carry an Ubuntu live cd around and a usb stick. Boot into Ubuntu, burn the data to a dvd or cd, run clamav and get rid of the bad guys. Usually that fixes up a ton of the problems you'll normally encounter. If the machine boots, you can also get a ton of goodies from portableapps.com
- drspacemonkey, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4You can do the same thing with BartPE. The UBCD4win package of plugins for BartPE includes a plugin application to build a BartPE/UBCD4Win USB drive. Very handy. I happen to have a 1gb flash drive on my keychain at all times that is devoted to just that job.
- dh122, on 05/16/2008, -1/+5?
- JFitzpatrick, on 05/16/2008, -0/+4Man thanks for the tip off. I'd been using Ultimate Boot CD, but this Hiren's boot disc is amazing.
- wilf_brim, on 05/16/2008, -1/+5UBCD is da bomb. Every geek should have it. This is just a better way to carry it around but (as was pointed out) some systems won't boot (or won't boot well) from a USB drive.
- Lith25, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3i know exactly where you are coming from.
- yunus, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3You could still use it on a CD.
- newwatch51, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3Hrm, I think I found the page once but thought nothing of it. Thanks for the heads up, this looks like a very nice CD. It's not FOSS, but still looks nice.
- asssa3000, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3Well this is your opinion, you are probably clever enough to know about this tool but do not forget that there are many others who do not know.
- daverave999, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3How? Serious question-I couldn't work out how to.
- werries, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2i always see knoppix suggested for fixing a computer
why knoppix over other linux distributions? - markdr123, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2It works equally well on a CD, and some BIOSs won't boot from USB.
- theaceoffire, on 05/16/2008, -2/+5Can you dual boot a usb stick?
- zomgorly, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2The amount on tools and updates makes Hiren 9.5 pretty useful.
- Rggoalie3, on 05/16/2008, -1/+3Original tutorial link below incase anyone actually wants to use this. Link on page goes to a generic hotlinking page.
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2006/03/25/install-an ... - newwatch51, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Yeah great tool
- TheVirus, on 05/16/2008, -1/+3Hiren's Boot CD is awesome. He/She updates it quite often and it's worked every time. Even if you need to use it on a CD and not a USB stick, it's still worth it. Find it on your local torrent site and have at it. UBCD doesn't hold a candle to Hiren's.
- PabloPowell, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2I wouldn't call it a PC repair kit, it is more like a diagnostic kit. I have really only found the UBCD for DOS useful for testing the hard drive or the memory.
- daverave999, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2Thanks!
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Actually, the tools in UBCD can check your RAM and other hardware and report if it is malfunctioning. So it can be useful then too. :)
- iDiggIt42, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2It's pretty simple. Just edit your comment -- there's a delete button.
- TheSpook, on 05/16/2008, -1/+3What percentage of computers made in, say, the last 5 years don't support booting from USB? Just curious, I have no clue.
- doctechnical, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Seriously, it would be pretty sweet to have one stick with UBCD, BartPE and Knoppix, all ready to go. No way to do this?
- phantom_mullet, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Do an internets search for miniPE-XT...I have found that this particular build of BartPE has a lot of great built-in tools...
Or try DUB CD (I think that's what it is called...it has 3 or 4 built-in bootable environments). - newwatch51, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1But Hardy is way more than just Gparted and would be overkill if all you needed to do was to repartition.
- Disfnord, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Besides the point?
