Really? wow. - blocguy, on 12/10/2007, -1/+94In other news, the past has already occurred!

Mac for design
Windows for solitaire. - Remmy, on 12/10/2007, -3/+53There's 31 (popular) flavors and it gives Windows users brain freeze.
- mlwarrior, on 12/10/2007, -22/+69Heh, sorry, but I'm not switching to linux for my home operating system. No games, and multi-media is a pain in the ass.
On my server? That's a different story. Also, what's wrong with dual booting? What's with all the exclusiveness? A computer is a tool, not a lifestyle choice. - GreatDrok, on 12/10/2007, -15/+48I first ran Linux in 1994 when I got a PC with Windows 3.1 (up to that point most of my work was on VT 220 terminals and SUN SparcStations) and it was unusable as a desktop. Singe user non-internet enabled platform? Eeep. I ran Linux happily on Laptops from 1996 onwards too originally on a Pentium 75 based Toshiba. Windows has only just got to the point where I would consider it equal in capability to a Linux machine from 1994. Even today, Windows is a security nightmare which makes it unsuitable for use as a networked operating system. The only reason people think Windows is desktop ready is because that is what they used from the start. If you started on UNIX like I did then you would find Windows a total pain.
- SeethisPass, on 12/10/2007, -1/+33The past is just a memory.
The future never comes.
Today is a wonderful gift.
That's why it's called the Present.
(come on, smile dammit.)
cheers! - stalefries, on 12/10/2007, -1/+28And the present is always now!
- z0mbie2099, on 12/10/2007, -6/+28Linux is like ice cream.
- rockets, on 12/10/2007, -4/+26Yes they do, it's only that the form that they appear in are:
"Leopard is the best OS ever!" "Leopard to change the world" "iPhone is the Jesus phone" "Apple user heals the sick" - ArthurSucks, on 12/10/2007, -4/+24Okay, games is limited, I'll give you that. However no multimedia? Your kidding right? What multimedia can you not do?
I seem to have no problem editing photos, recording music, and editing video in Linux. - moocow1452, on 12/10/2007, -2/+21It's not a lie, unlike cake.
- arbulus, on 12/10/2007, -5/+24Multi-media a pain on Linux? How so?
- renegadeafk, on 12/10/2007, -4/+21Old.. A Lot of the problems in the article are fixed in the newer versions of Ubuntu, automatic codec installation ect..
- remccain, on 12/10/2007, -1/+18I've said it a hundred times to every fanboi whinging about how to make linux popular.
You will never make linux popular -UNTIL- Joe User can go to Wal-Mart or EB and buy -ANY- program off the shelf and run it with no problems.
Seriously.
Joe User doesn't care what the name of his OS is, all he wants to do is run Deer Hunter III, WoW, Adobe Photoshop, or whatever.
You want to replace Windows? Improve WINE. - unknownsoldierX, on 12/10/2007, -2/+19A computer is just a tool. And so are you.
- arbulus, on 12/10/2007, -8/+24Seconded.
Your statement "Windows is a security nightmare which makes it unsuitable for use as a networked operating system" hits it right on the head. People tell me "Windows can be a very stable system and very secure from viruses and other malware with the proper setup, maintenance and tools." I find this statement to be one of the most absurd things I've ever heard. Basically, you can make Windows secure if you buy a hardware firewall, buy a software firewall, buy a virus scanner, buy a spyware and adware scanner, and run the malware checks about twice a day. So you spend hundreds of dollars in "tools" to keep your OS safe, and then have to watch it like a hawk and take care of it to make sure it's doing what it's supposed to. That doesn't sound like an ideal OS to me. It sounds like a nightmare and a headache that isn't even worth it. Not to mention the hit to your wallet just to buy all the "tools" you need to do this. Not to mention the fact that Windows just isn't a stable operating system to begin with.
Conversely, any Linux distro you choose is stable, secure and well made. You NEVER need virus scanners or adware/spyware scanners. The operating system doesn't allow applications to just install themselves on our computer from the net without you knowing it. The operating system is stable and complete so that it's not a piece of swiss cheese of code. As a networked OS, Linux cannot be beat. You don't have to worry about spending money on top of money to protect your system because the OS is made to be secure. You don't have to do ANY of the things to a Linux system that you have to do to a Windows system to protect it. It's already protected by virtue of its sound design.
I use Linux on my desktop and I couldn't be happier. I came from a nightmare of Windows a few years back. And when I have to use windows now, like at work or trying to help fix a family member's computer, I am so frustrated by it. - whiteknives, on 12/10/2007, -15/+30It's good enough to replace Windows already. The problem is free open source advertising hasn't been invented yet.

- inactive, on 12/10/2007, -21/+33*Windows for design, games, creativity, work
Linux for design, games, creativity, work
Mac for table weights. - i4mt3hwin, on 12/10/2007, -3/+14Linux will never be mainstream because Linux will never be predictably and properly supported.
What you guys don't seem to get is that the problem with Linux is not the software itself, but the business model. Windows is successful because you have a very large organization selling it and supporting it. With Linux, you have volunteers on message boards. Not exactly the same thing.
I think CEO Nigel Clifford put it best. "There's 10, 15, 20, maybe 25 different Linux platforms out there. It sometimes appears that Linux is fragmenting faster than it unifies." - Anoobis, on 12/10/2007, -3/+13I play UT and UT3 mainly and they can or will run in linux, and multimedia isn't that bad is it?
I'm planning on properly using and converting to my ubuntu partition once UT3 hits linux. other games I'll boot back into windows for.
been weaning myself off microsoft, no more office (open office), outlook express (thunderbird), certainly no IE (FF). its going well so far. - TehDoctor, on 12/10/2007, -1/+11iTunes < Amarok

- vade79, on 12/10/2007, -0/+9As much as you seem to be ignorant of what is available in *nix...I will say VS's IDE is by far the best i've ever used...even a Linux fanboy like me can respect it.
- BenBenMan, on 12/10/2007, -0/+9Ohshi- ... you can't badmouth Linux *and* Ron Paul on Digg, in the same comment, in the same sentence. Are you trying to get dugg down?
- pHr34kY, on 12/10/2007, -0/+96.06? That was stupid! The first thing he burns is the inability to configure multiple monitors - which has been resolved in 7.10. Why is he doing it on a release over a year old?
- mlwarrior, on 12/10/2007, -0/+9I guess I should have been a little more clear. It's more the lack of hardware support. I would like to consider myself fair in terms of compiling and using drivers on linux, however, nothing has ever pissed me off more than trying to get 5.1 audio working on my 'very' common chipset.
Also, I got flash, quick-time and windows media working, but it was really a pain in the ass.
Would you like to tell me how linux is better, in any way, than windows or os x in terms of ANYTHING media related? Please, do tell. - inactive, on 12/10/2007, -0/+9umm, ubuntu comes pre-loaded with solitaire.
- daok, on 12/10/2007, -3/+12The future is coming. Innovation will rise again.
Too many connections ERROR
You are still far behind... - kiderjones, on 12/10/2007, -5/+14I ditched Windows for Ubuntu last spring, and I have nothing but applause ever since.
woot - andycr512, on 12/10/2007, -0/+9XMMS is a nearly exact clone of classic WinAmp, from what I hear, if that's what you're into.
- Tazmaster, on 12/10/2007, -0/+8Or a really bad version of Spaceballs
- Trevahaha, on 12/10/2007, -2/+10You don't seem to understand how RAM is utilized under Vista. Windows caches a lot more items in RAM that it did before, this is to increase performance. Underutilized RAM (i.e. free RAM) is wasted RAM.
- manitoba98xp, on 12/10/2007, -1/+9The cake is not a lie. I don't care what you say. I trust the nice disembodied voice. Had you assumed the party escort position, you would have received cake.
- PainToad, on 12/10/2007, -0/+8Linux + compiz for eyecandy :D
- andycr512, on 12/10/2007, -2/+10Since when is not having one specific proprietary software application equivalent to media being a pain?
- evilregis, on 12/10/2007, -2/+9If by "bloated" you mean "contains pre-installed software to perform most common computing tasks" then yes. If you mean it as a bloated memory hog then I have to laugh at that.
When I boot into Vista, a clean boot.... nothing opened, it is using about 35% of my 2GB of RAM. Contrast that with Ubuntu. I'm just shy of 3 days of uptime right now. I have Firefox open with 8 tabs open, a terminal window, system monitor, a Nautilus window, Pidgin, F-Spot, and Compiz installed and running. My RAM usage is at 20.5%. - daok, on 12/10/2007, -4/+11I am Sick too. Apple fanboy are ok, but ... those who are the most quiet and never tell to Mac or Linux to switch are Windows people... ;)
- atarijedi, on 12/10/2007, -7/+14Without the hardware and software support, linux will never make it big time in the Home/Office arena. If it had better software support, and I don't just mean "free" alternatives, things would take off. Adobe needs to start porting, Autodesk needs to start porting, National Instruments needs to start porting! Although in some cases, like Microsoft, some software would probably never be ported, so there will have to be alternative's, but they could at least try to keep on par with Microsoft, personally I would rather use Word and Excel 2007 than what Open Office has to offer, but if the various software companies I mentioned before ported to linux, I might just give Office up and switch.
- pingpongboss, on 12/10/2007, -2/+9the tennis balls keep getting stuck in the tubes :(
- inactive, on 12/10/2007, -2/+9Computers are just a production tool. 99.99% of people using computers are appliance operators. They do not even know the full potential of Windows Explorer or file structures. In the commercial world if the have a problem they call for technical support. Privately they replicate what they do at work. Try introducing those people to Linux. Mad panic attacks. Read the Linux forums, some of the questions posted are lame. Users don't know how to Google or read the technical manuals. I wonder how many Linux users have actually read the Red Hat user manuals or know that the Linux kernel contains a technical manual.
- baalzebub, on 12/10/2007, -2/+9it doesnt matter what os, if the server is limited on the amount of bandwidth & capability it will bog down due to too many hits/requests, called the Slashdot effect or digg effect depending on who is running the submission of the article...
- guardi, on 12/10/2007, -4/+11"Innovation will rise again"... this comes from a community that for the most part works on creating clones of proprietary software.
- PueSi, on 12/10/2007, -2/+9I like the concept of Linux, it's free, it's open and it works just fine, but i personally like doing things the Windows way. I tried both, they're both perfectly capable it's just that i like using Windows the most. I've never had a problem with viruses or spy-ware, i guess it's because i use common sense so i don't see why should i switch to Linux.
So maybe just maybe we should stop with the senseless bashing and use whatever we fell like using. - nitroburn, on 12/10/2007, -1/+8The future will come when we learn to accept more connections.
