Professor: Does it have Microsoft office?
Me: No but....
Professor: Does it have..... - PopcornDave, on 09/10/2008, -0/+47I've had that same conversation with a co-worker with the same results. You have my sympathies.
- smotpoker, on 09/10/2008, -1/+32Tux is the penguin, Linux is just his preferred OS ;)
http://gallery.osdn.org.ua/photos/tux-misc/tux_swa ... - rmhainlen, on 09/09/2008, -1/+29I freaking love this laptop. Besides everyone staring at you during class, I can easily take notes on it and browse the internet at the same time. Uninstall whatever crap OS it came with and put the latest Ubuntu distro on it.
Yeah, it only has a 16GB HDD but it is SOLID STATE! Woohoo! I have seen some people use the laptop specifically as an mp3 player which is an interesting idea. - regicide, on 09/10/2008, -2/+27Today some girl in my class had an Eee PC it looked pretty cool she was carrying it like a binder, while everyone else struggled to put their 10lb laptop in their backpack.
- U83RMENSCH, on 09/09/2008, -2/+20I find it interesting that they mention its like using a cellphone. pretty much every one has a cell phone and it does what they want it to, while being simple and doing what they want at the same time.
I can see these laptops taking off with that sort of thing in mind. Whats nice about linux however is that it can be so much more then all that. - inactive, on 09/10/2008, -3/+20This is a normal size laptop, the girl holding it in the picture just happens to be very tall.
- smotpoker, on 09/10/2008, -0/+15You either don't bother reading them, have very poor reading comprehension/memory or you're lying.
Searching for apps to install in repos is as simple/easy, if not moreso, as searching through files/folders with the windows "Find" utility. Type in search-box, select package, click apply, wait.
Searching for apps online is nearly as simple. Search freshmeat.net, sourceforge.net and if all else fails google it or ask on your distro's forums - inactive, on 09/10/2008, -2/+16Linux is a penguin! How cute
- earlvanze, on 09/10/2008, -1/+15I always say yes.
- ethana2, on 09/10/2008, -0/+12Not only does it come with Office, it comes with this cool plugin that lets me save documents in superior file formats! It's amazing, you should install it too!

1. open Synaptic Package Managaer
2. type in some keywords about the program you want (ex: "file renamer")
3. download the program (ex: pyrenamer)
and you have trouble with this? - Magnj, on 09/10/2008, -0/+11I'm sorry to hear that...
- chrisprang, on 09/10/2008, -0/+10Tablets suck and always will. I was a tablet tech for 3 years, and never ever liked them, or met anyone that was die hard tablet. They were usually just pitched to managers who were sold on the idea, but in real life scribe sucks. just like voice recognition.
- Magnj, on 09/10/2008, -0/+9I bought mine specifically for class. I've had a few comments, "Oh its so small" but for the most part, people hardly even notice I'm using a laptop which is nice in classes where hardly anyone uses one.
- inactive, on 09/10/2008, -0/+8Another slack-jawed "academic". There are too many of them. If your "professor" is that stupid, you should consider changing your course or your tutorial group.
- chrisprang, on 09/10/2008, -0/+8Which was beaten on all accounts by the eee pc 901. including price.
- lulzitsadigg, on 09/10/2008, -0/+8WTF are you talking about?
- Fozefy, on 09/10/2008, -0/+8Tablet PC's cost at least 3 or 4 times as much and honestly, in a physics class why not just use paper? Its easier then either really and if you really want it on your laptop just scan it. Seems easier and cheaper in my opinion. (Scanners are as cheap as $50, while getting a laptop with tablet capabilities are around $200 more than their non-tablet counterparts from what I've seen)
- rmhainlen, on 09/10/2008, -0/+8Um, put Ubuntu on it and use the multiple desktop function.
I was reading about conscientious objectors on one desktop, playing a game of chess on another and used yet another desktop to find the answer to some random question for class.
A friend of mine does Zaishen runs for Guild Wars throughout class but when the teacher walks near, he just switches to his other desktop that has his notes for the class on it. - EtherGnat, on 09/10/2008, -0/+7"Oh its so small"
That's what she said. - frieddonuts, on 09/10/2008, -0/+7I've always that the Tux brand is one of the best "marketing" tools that Linux has. It's instantly associable with Linux.
- MetalFrog, on 09/10/2008, -0/+7The pot story is that way -->
- DarkLaughingMan, on 09/10/2008, -2/+8Ah... my friend with the EEE PC always gets comments from his fellow computer science majors. "Dude! Is that the EEE PC?". Or the "What is that?"
- Aurash91, on 09/10/2008, -2/+8dumbass is good at being dumbass
- barius, on 09/10/2008, -0/+6You should be. I've had mine for about two weeks and I haven't put it down yet. It's incredibly convenient, even just wandering around the house.
- chrisprang, on 09/10/2008, -1/+71. iphone is twice the price.
2. 35 wpm on a iphone is impossible
3. iphone screen is smaller
4. iphone is a completely different market.
5. You're an idiot. - jjabe, on 09/10/2008, -3/+9Our Asus EeePC 901 (20GB drive, 6-cell battery) just arrived. I'm very excited!
- inactive, on 09/10/2008, -0/+6Stubear. Is that short for "Stupid Bear"? Either you're illiterate, or you're lying. Installing software in any modern Linux distro is EASIER than in Windoze.
- smotpoker, on 09/10/2008, -0/+6"First, it's not obvious where to find Synaptic or even what eh hell Synaptic is to begin with"
So hovering the mouse over it for the tag-description is too complicated for you? Depending on your window manager it may even have a little definition in parenthesis "(Package Manager)". Not to mention the Add/Remove Programs..." in the Applications menu. Even with none of those features, it is not hard to ask google really quick or check the help.
"Second, you have to know what you are looking for and if you're not specific enough or you haven't guessed the magic keywords"
Like I said, it is similar to using the Windows "Find" utility or google (minus all the virus/spam infested sites). How come I don't see you bitching about how google searches are too hard because they do not always work exactly how you expect on every google submission?
The only possible option that is not implemented I can think of is to restrict the descriptiveness which might provide fewer results to sift through but would likely result in thousands of people accidentally installing the wrong app since they didn't really know what it is.
In your example, you could have simply used the category filter first (the "sections" button on the left of the window). Click "graphics" and then type in "editor", "viewer" etc. It is not complicated or hard. It is certainly easier than sifting through google results most of the time.
"The first things that pops up is a dialog of files that the system claims need to be installed, half of which are absolutely meaningless to your average user."
They obviously aren't meaningless to you because they infuriate you enough to bitch about it. I suppose you would rather have your OS install ***** without your knowledge or make you manually do it yourself? Whatever's clever buddy....
Look, if you dislike Linux, fine. But please, stop trolling the ***** out of every Linux submission because you are too much of a petty little spoiled brat bitch to enjoy it's features/advantages. It would also be nice if you would not make crackhead misinformed statements like "they never mention how hard program installs are". They usually mention program installs, they just aren't ***** retarded enough to think they are hard.
Unless you see a big red flashing title saying: "STUBEAR, SWITCH TO LINUX NOW OR I WILL KILL YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY IN THEIR SLEEP" Noone is trying to force you to do *****. If you are too lazy, pigheaded, stubborn or retarded to use Linux just continue not reading the submissions but *don't* continue making ignorant comments and trying to exaggerate petty/non-existent problems. - chrisprang, on 09/10/2008, -2/+7i have a eee pc 901, with XP. been thinking about putting eeebuntu on it but dont know i can be bothered. these are rugged, have dropped it off my bed 5 times and no issues :)! love it!!!!
and at $500AU its gotta be the chepest laptop on the market. - lulzitsadigg, on 09/10/2008, -1/+6This could be a great way for linux to penetrate the market. I've been thinking of getting one myself.. but I'm not really sure about the size.. are there any larger versions of the eee? (not in terms of technical specs, mainly in terms of physical size)
- techdever, on 09/10/2008, -0/+5"There are no moving parts".... so the lid is actually stuck on open ?
- Fozefy, on 09/10/2008, -1/+6Ya, I also have prof's that setup their webpages to accept assignments only with the office file extension. Not too much trouble for me, but I got my girlfriend using open office and had a prof do this to her and she didn't know what to do. Needless to say I got a call from her about 2 minutes before the assignment was due frantically asking me what to do...sigh.
- theaceoffire, on 09/10/2008, -0/+5The number one feature of Laptops is portability, which is why the power is lower, the parts are more expensive, and the storage is not as important.
Save the big programs for a Desktop, use a "notebook" computer as a notebook... and it works great. - smotpoker, on 09/10/2008, -0/+5"I have seen some people use the laptop specifically as an mp3 player which is an interesting idea."
I used to do that with my laptop (when it still worked). I still have the backpack with the hole cut in the side for the fan.
Also, when I got my last car but before I could get a new stereo for it, I would use a cassette/cd adapter to play cds and mp3s over the factory system from the laptop.
*Wishes laptop still worked even though 6-7 years is still longer than most people's last*
</nostalgia> - inactive, on 09/10/2008, -1/+6Why have you crippled it with XP?
To get the full benefit of this wonderful little machine, you MUST run Linux. - enclaved, on 09/10/2008, -0/+5500AUD is about 400USD and you can get some full size laptops for that on sale
- nickpick, on 09/10/2008, -0/+4No, it's kinda like Windows, but working.
- Ramenhood, on 09/10/2008, -0/+4"Grandpa going to put it in a grandkid’s stocking this Christmas? Could be. It’s cheap as chips."
I get candy in mine... - 0xception, on 09/10/2008, -0/+4@stubear....
your an idiot... look into .deb/.rpm packages...
as for the web based installation, this is a feature that will be improved in the coming releases of different linux OS's. So while you already have the option to download a single package (rpm or deb) you will also have the option to install via hyperlinks directly from websites all using the repo system to resolve dependency issues. The one issue i have is w/ the searching tool of the installer apps (which isn't hard to find on fedora it's called "Add/Remove Programs!" Ubuntu has a similar labelled menu launcher.) is that it's a keyword search, i would like to see packages using a tag cloud... maybe ubuntu does this already i'm not sure.
I think you need to learn about the subject before you open your mouth about it. "Jesus ***** christ, what a concept?" - Aurash91, on 09/10/2008, -0/+4I use my eee 4g in history, and english. its alot faster than the pos machines the school has (20 second boot time vs 2 minutes...)
- scabbers, on 09/10/2008, -2/+6Prof Hawking types faster with his setup than I could with that itty bitty keyboard.
- inactive, on 09/10/2008, -0/+3You need multiple destops. Windows can't do that. Now you can see why sensible people run Linux (besides the fact that it's cheaper, faster, more secure, more reliable, and just entirely better!)
- CalcProgrammer1, on 09/10/2008, -1/+4Tux is awesome, the Tux icon and the Ubuntu symbol are the two most common Linux symbols out there.
- rmhainlen, on 09/10/2008, -0/+3You get used to the size of the keyboard after a while. Besides, the resolution it pushes is fine for extended use.
I have watched a few youtube/google documentaries on it.
The keyboard takes time but I have cracked 30-40 wpm on it which isn't bad for its size.
Granted nowhere near what I do on a regular size but definitely sufficient. - CalcProgrammer1, on 09/10/2008, -0/+3I am finding myself using my PDA a lot more now than ever before. I always used it as an MP3 player, but now, walking all over campus, I am using it a lot for music. I'm also finding that it's easier to use my PDA to quickly check the Internet than to haul out my big laptop for the same thing. I bring my laptop to class but I use my PDA more. But yeah, I've seen a lot of Ubuntu laptops out there, actually I'm quite surprised at the number of Linux users in college. Normally people think you're speaking a different language when you say you run Ubuntu, but at college everyone seems to know what it is and probably has a copy on their computer.
- rmhainlen, on 09/10/2008, -0/+3eh, I had one issue for the xfire extension for pidgin but that was very easily resolved when a friend did it for me by going step through step an online guide.
Other than that, what programs do you need to install? The common user really only needs the programs that it comes with.
Oh, I forgot to mention, putting 8.04 on the laptop was interesting because it has no cd-rom.....yay, for external dvd drives! - goeric, on 09/10/2008, -0/+3Burried. Nothing can run Crysis.
- Aurash91, on 09/10/2008, -0/+37 inches is fine but only if you can get a native 800 x 600 (w/o scroll). the eee 4g has hacked drivers. Also, it fits in my pocket!
