- gandre, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12lirc rocks, but... what will we see next on the front page? zomg apache for linux!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3im not fond of those guys going around shouting "OLD OLD OMG !!!!!!oneoneeleveneleventy"
but seriously !
lirc on front page ?! lol - callumj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I always laugh at the Windows crowd, who have to buy every single package just to achieve something that could be downloaded and installed in a matter of minutes with apt-get/yum.
Catching up? Windows is way behind: looks, virtualization, security and customisation. Any UNIX OS does this easily, including OS X.
I can afford a OS but why should I when SuSE is doing all I need? I can still pay via donating. Another Anti-Linux whinger. - Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A paragraph or two for theory of operation might be nice. In other words "How does it work, and what functions does it provide?)
To which most Linux users usually reply "Stupid, stupid, STUPID!!!!" - pairanoyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No but this one will,
http://ticom.tyumen.ru/jokes/itsasony.jpg - barthosch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh my god.. soldering together my own IR reciever for the serial port and using it with LIRC was the first thing I ever did with an soldering iron... That was back in 2001 or so. Know what? It sucked! This is so old and not even news. Damn, I have no time for this.
- CapnCornflake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had an IR remote for my '95 era P1 Packard Bell. Back when having a remote was INNOVATION.
Now, over a decade later, it's finally catching on. Sheesh. - AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Older than god.
- CLIFFosakaJAPAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It may be an old story but I thought it Digg worthy....pointed out this to my Linux using buddy and it made his day...Thanks Bonlebon
- dupswapdrop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Will this setup work to control the wife?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2what are the chances, I just happen to be installing lirc and this comes up on digg
- barthosch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Linux is that new free Unix everyone is not talking about, right?
- cyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WinLIRC ++
- jonjo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1my kid at school needs internet, photo editing with layers, soundtrack editing and email
my old tosh laptop + linux = £700 saved
oh... and divx,mpeg,mp3,avi,bittorent,etc,etc,etc..
it's all about the right tool for the job, that's all - fadumpt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Soldering your remote together is a thing of the past....
Nowadays, you can go out and by that shiny new Microsoft Media Center remote (or many others even) and use it with LIRC to control your Linux applications.
It's a worthy digg for the simple reason that linux based media centers are maturing more and more everyday (to the point that most reviews you read of mythtv vs MS MCE come out with "we'd rather use MythTV as your media center) and using your media center with a remote control is...well...something you expected to do, not a cool feature that might exist later. - olliholliday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i really have to disagree with what you've said, except the bits that don't make sense.
(what does "consumers need to be sold" mean? slavery's illegal in the west?)
yes linux sucks for a desktop at the moment, last time i tried it was 4 years ago and i couldnt get the bastard running. i installed dapper drake the other day and... from putting a dvd in the drive i basically got dumped to a very usable free desktop OS.
add that nifty compiz stuff and give it 2 years and i seriously think microsoft will have some major problems with Windows.
how many people buy windows upgrade licenses? it's gotta be a tiny fraction of the whole - people use the OS that came with the pc. in a few years dell et al will pick up on the fact they can save $30 (or whatever they pay for windows) on every pc they sell by shipping the free alternative. - cheerio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Sometimes i feel like i am being watched on my computer. I was configuring this and RSS pops up with this story. Been tring to get this to work with SIR for a while now.
- stou, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8Hella old
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1lmao!!!!
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4I always laugh at the Linux crowd trying to catch up with the features on Windows and OS X from a usability standpoint. Linux is good for a) people who cannot afford an OS b) computer hobbyists and c) servers. If Linux users would just accept that that is the way it's going to be, we would all be better off. Consumers need to be SOLD, and Linux doesn't sell itself, thus it will never be mainstream.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1What does this have to do with infrared remote control systems?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Not really interested in LIRC but it would be fun to make a USB infrared receiver.
- dime, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4
I've heard you can replace tables with css, can anyone confirm?
I don't see how you can get rid of spacer.gif, though. Like 640k ram, it's more than enough. - dassouki, on 10/12/2007, -19/+0sorry dude we don't live on the net and check every post on every website, some of us have a life, and we're quiet proud of it
