- Dankoozy, on 03/03/2009, -1/+28Will they get rid of those MS Server and "get the facts" ads from that site now?
- tuxchick, on 03/03/2009, -1/+17Nice scoop, Steven. It seems that the owners of Linux.com and its sibling sites Slashdot, Sourceforge, Thinkgeek, Newsforge, IT Manager's journal, and whatever other ones there were, have been on a long downhill slide. Newsforge went from original content to being a Linux.com feed, and then disappeared without a trace. They disappeared the archives too, which was a sad bad thing to do. IT Manager's journal declined and disappeared the same way. Sourceforge has undergone several disastrous (IMO) makeovers, and each one is more difficult to search and read.
There have been several changes of ownership over the years, or maybe just name changes, I didn't follow it that closely. I recall VA Systems, Open Source Technology Group, and lately Sourceforge, Inc.
Linux.com had some good writers and good original content, I was sad to see it go. - sjvn, on 03/03/2009, -1/+17Excuse me I rarely agree to embargoes and when I do, I don't break them. In this case, I started scouting out SourceForge because I was getting vexed about them first letting so many people go--many of them friends of mine--and then two months of nothing goes by So, here's a quick reporter tip. If you want to know what's going on with a company, check out what Web domain names it owns, or in this case, didn't own anymore. I did, and armed with that information, getting the rest was just the usual matter of calling people up and asking questions.
- picpak, on 03/03/2009, -0/+16Buy Linux.org and do something with that joke of a site.
- motang, on 03/03/2009, -3/+18Good as they SourceForge wasn't doing anything with it since Jan 1 09, and looks like the if you got the site it say it will be relaunching soon.
- tuxchick, on 03/03/2009, -0/+13Forgiven you are.
- motang, on 03/03/2009, -1/+10errr...me speaks good Engrish really! Sorry about the typos...typing too fast for my own good.
- moges, on 03/03/2009, -1/+10Free as in speech, not free as in beer ;-)
- brettalton, on 03/04/2009, -0/+7I agree with you and thought so years ago.
But now if you go to http://linux.org/ you get this error message:

That just makes me sad. - sjvn, on 03/03/2009, -0/+6I think that's a safe bet!
- jemka, on 03/03/2009, -3/+8Free as in speech, not free as in man boobs from that free beer.

Please give us unconnected people some info :) - srg13, on 03/04/2009, -0/+4Linux.org is rubbish - they call themselves 'The Linux Homepage', implying that they are affiliated with Linus or the Linux Foundation, but as far as I can tell they are not in any way, and just run the site to make money from dodgy sponsored links and advertisements. They are probably hoping to sell the domain for a very high price in the future as well...
And it looks like crap. - XFi6, on 03/03/2009, -1/+5You by me has forgaven been.
- brettalton, on 03/04/2009, -1/+5"Sourceforge has undergone several disastrous (IMO) makeovers, and each one is more difficult to search and read. "
Oh thank God someone said it. I was beginning wondering if I was the only one who noticed... - pbol01, on 03/03/2009, -1/+5I think the irony of that is priceless, so I hope they keep them :)
- daradib, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3> Linux.com had some good writers and good original content, I was sad to see it go.
I definitely agree. That was the centerpiece about linux.com for me. - parax, on 03/03/2009, -1/+3I'm glad someone is going to do something with that domain. It's been a scar on the face of Linux for the last few months. I hate sites that start with original content and become nothing more than a forum as the main site. I lost interest in the Guild Wars community when that happened to a huge number of Guild Wars web sites. (most notably gwonline.net / incgamers.com).
- kwasmosis, on 03/03/2009, -6/+7There seems to be some kind of awkward irony in this story, selling a domain to an open source organization.
- inactive, on 04/11/2009, -0/+1Bought? I thought Linux people don't buy anything.
- sanskrtam, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1Very true, picpak, Linux.org should be totally revamped with dignity.
- MrViklund, on 03/03/2009, -0/+1Great news I presume.
- ECas123, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1What's an ad?
- DivineMonkey, on 03/03/2009, -1/+1Yay, now it will become a useful site. Instead of the pile of ***** it used to be, good news!
- johnmonty5, on 03/03/2009, -1/+1Great Information
- theclaw1, on 03/03/2009, -2/+2All your yoda us has forgiven.
- williepepper, on 03/04/2009, -1/+1I guess this year must really be the year of Linux!!
- basic, on 03/04/2009, -2/+2Yes! Another big site soon to be hosted at the Open Source Lab- http://osuosl.org

Vote here if you would like to see the site do something other than be the new hub for pro-Linux propaganda. I'd like to see a place where it would be possible to say you don't like something without being bludgeoned to death by angry zealots wielding penguins! - inbedlam, on 03/04/2009, -2/+1I personally don't get a .com for the sake of having a .com fashion. Considering that the Linux Foundation is a non profit entity it's domain should be and remain .org (Organisation). In the extremely unlikely event that the Linux Foundation becomes a commercial entity then it would be proper to register a .com domain.

- inactive, on 03/04/2009, -2/+0Typos or not, you're still one of the biggest queers on Digg.
- rtaibah, on 05/22/2009, -6/+3Breaking press release embargos are we Steven?
