- Alex.w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Linux doesn't have a Road map as such, because of its development model. That is whats so great about it. If you don't like the way things are going, and you have the time, you can steer the "road map" any way you like.
Try telling the vendor of an OS with 95% of the market that you'd prefer devfs style file system vs. the normal pre-built db of mknods.. - Xanium4332, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9What can have a better road map than a community developed OS / Program. there's no company to go bankrupt, no-one solely developing a program to make money, instead thousands of people working on improving every aspect.
Safety in numbers, and there's more people developing Linux (and open source OS's in general) then any other OS, and I only trust Linux to be around in 20 years time... - DickBreath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Just want to point out that this article is on LinuxInsider.
LinuxInsider is an ANTI-LINUX site, pretending to be pro-linux.
Anyone following the SCOundrel fiaSCO for the last 3-1/2 years knows this.
Linux Insider often publishes an article saying "small good thing" about Linux, but watch out for "big horrible problem" that should totally scare you away. Don't use Linux or Open Source at all, for that matter. By the way, do you know about Microsoft.... - Alex.w, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9So why is it that Rackspace offer Linux based hosting accounts, if the road map is so undefined.
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Linux is THE web/content/services hosting and development environment solution.
For actual everyday desktop usage?....ehhhh maybe not so much yet. - drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Whats unclear is why rackspace is so much more expensive then all the other dedicated providers and why they can't list prices but have to quote you with a rep. Maybe hes anti linux because he makes more money when you choose windows and its unclear if he can continue to rip people off with linux hosting.
- zeejay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Rackspace is now a shill for MS, who spend a ton of money to "gain marketshare" with these mega-ISP's by giving them incentives to move parked domains to IIS. Looks good for MS on paper, though. What a crock.
- mrpauly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I will only comment on one thing. I'm not an "MS Lubber" as suggested and I have always advocated for Linux and Linux hosting. I think anyone here will be able to see that for himself by googling my name, which was mis-spelled. It's Paul Froutan with an A and not an O. I'll let you form your own opinion on the rest.
- jeremye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Because Rackspace would be crazy *not* to offer Linux hosting for those who choose to go that route. Doing that would leave out a huge chunk of the hosting market.
- drag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Why's it better than something like FreeBSD? What makes Linux much better than alternative open-source unix-based operating systems (especially when the BSD license crushes the GPL when in use in a corporate setting)?"
Better performance, better userland, more and better virtualization options, better software packages and such. A good Linux distro like Debian will offer you 90% of the software you will ever need for anything, period. All pre-packaged, all tested, all supported.
As for GPL vs BSD you need to get your head out of the sand.
Otherwise if BSD is truly more 'corporate friendly' you better tell that to SGI, IBM, Intel, AMD, Sony, HP, Novell, Redhat, Wind River, Motorola, NEC, Siemans, Hitachi, Nokia, Trolltech, Nippon Telephone and Telegraph, Redhat, Adobe, Disney, Industrial light and magic, Pixar and about 90% of any large corporations in the United States that uses, developes, and supports Linux and Linux-related software that they've all been snookered.
Go look at the corporations that contribute code back to FreeBSD and support the project directly vs the Linux kernel. The reason Linux is now faster, has better virtualization features, etc etc is directly because corporate support and usage. - scottc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Rackspace is not interested in customers who shop by price. They have stellar reputation in the industry. The inquiries they get are from people who know what they are looking for and what the general cost is for that level of service. The specific cost can be worked out with the sales rep when making the deal.
- cplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I could not imagine hosting a site using any other OS!
- scheper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How is the Linux roadmap less defined than Windows?
With Linux we know exactly what to expect, including backwards compatibility, stability and efficiency. We don't know anything about how Windows will behave in future, especially with Vista. - AcidBath, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5People can make their arguments over Linux/BSD/etc but that isn't what he is missing. The basis is what runs *better* ON Linux, like Apache, PHP, MySQL, Rails, Perl, etc.
Those are fast becoming the defacto web development standard and they more or less all run better on a Linux system than when then are ported to Windows. - Alex.w, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3That was kind of my point. I wasn't seriously suggesting that a hosting company would use _only_ win.
But it is a bit hard to take this seriously when they have packages based on an OS they're saying isn't right for the market. - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Why's it better than something like FreeBSD? What makes Linux much better than alternative open-source unix-based operating systems (especially when the BSD license crushes the GPL when in use in a corporate setting)?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ghrar! this man must be a windows lubber! the linux webhosting/admin stack be plenty well defined if yer asking me, it be full of treasures!
- hunchback, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Having a company or person to fall back on becomes much more important."
I so don't agree with that, like you can afford not to have a fall back person if you are running Windows ... I would think you need a fall back person regardless of platform. IIS or Apache? Wouldn't you need a fallback person for managing those too? And what about working the network backup, updates, security, databases, etc etc etc, no fall back person? just what does that guy mean exactly? - inactive, on 09/11/2009, -0/+1Good article, I have found Linux hosting to be the most stable:
http://www.the-best-web-hosting-service.com - Avian00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think he's simply trying to imply "Flexibility" in the fact that you're not tied into a pre-determined set of tools like you are when you go Microsoft.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The article is promoting a web hosting company...spam...no digg
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That quote is really confusing. Mr. Frouton is appearantly very pro-linux, but it's unclear how the above quote fits into that.
- findhostcoupons, on 03/15/2009, -0/+1Good and very interesting article! Linux advantages are obvious in web hosting industry!
- foobarra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Rackspace is a manged hosting provider - they lease servers to businesses and individuals. Rackspace does not park domains - the customers decide what kind of server they want, what OS they want to run on, and they point domains to their own leased servers so they can run their business. Your comment is completely baseless and is just silly spouting off... What a crock...
- RidinDirty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Exactly! I was considering switching hosting companies. Did the usual look around at all the biggies. Rackspace was the only one without detailed pricing available on the website. Guess who got crossed off the list first?
- Alex.w, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Why is this guy getting -diggs? This is exactly what MS is doing. I think it was godaddy they convinced to move that packed domains to ISS, which was a huge ***** up btw because it could handle the load.
- fatnutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This article is lame...no digg
- sainfoman, on 05/22/2008, -0/+0Yip Lame, go to http://www.vpsinabox.com no worry
- RidinDirty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Advertisement overload!
