- wispygalaxy, on 12/18/2007, -29/+218I switched to Linux when Ubuntu 7.10 came out, and I am glad I did. I was given a Toshiba laptop that came with Vista, and I did not like how it was sluggish. I kept hearing how Vista was insecure, and I wanted to try something new. Once I got Ubuntu running, I was very pleased. The eye candy is nice, and many applications are useful. Previously, I used to think that Linux was "too hard" and did not consider testing it out; that was due to ignorance, however. (At the time I was living with my parents and they decided what went on the computer, so I couldn't really install a whole new operating system.) I just hope other girls my age will switch to Linux, too, and become more interested in computers instead of being mainly concerned with Facebook, IM, and YouTube. :)

- dezman2003, on 12/18/2007, -12/+76These windows to Ubuntu articles are becoming pretty spammy it's almost like people have figured out that they will be mindless dugg every time and they want the free traffic....
- Trax91, on 12/18/2007, -4/+58Girls? Linux? More interested in computers than Facebook, IM, and YouTube?
My head asplode. - badjoke, on 12/18/2007, -3/+57*sigh* Ignore all these people. Also, I collectively apologize on behalf of the entire internet.
- chingy1788, on 12/18/2007, -31/+74I tried Ubuntu
I only use it in emergencies
Ubuntu + Linux Media centre
I originally had XP and Medio media centre, which was ok
then i saw the linux media centre demo and wanted that
Ubuntu didnt take long, most of the installation was straight forward
the media centre took forever to install, and when installed it didn't work
TV out took forever to setup (googling for commands)
sharing drives also took a while to do
then i gave up and put Vista on it
It ran slow on 768MB RAM, but it worked
then i took vista off and put XP back on...
Ubuntu + Laptop
Wireless didn't work, many drivers weren't installed, i didn't do much with it, got rid of it and XP went back on, Vista was on for a while, but the laptop had 1GB of RAM, and a single core CPU, it didn't run fast, so XP again
Generally I just had a bad experience of doing anything on linux, it was like crazy german Unreal Tourney Kid in my head - Aahhhhhh... *smash* - MWeather, on 12/18/2007, -0/+36Canon did create Linux drivers: ttp://www.canon.com.au/products/printers/colour_bj_printers/ip1800_support.aspx

Stop doing this *****, its pathetic. - Firehed, on 12/18/2007, -1/+28Why on earth would you install Firefox in Wine?
- mancat, on 12/18/2007, -7/+34Before you install Ubuntu you could have tried removing the various crapware that came on your HP. A friend of mine recently purchased an HP laptop with Vista, and the amount of preinstalled, run-in-the-background crap was astounding. This goes for most other manufacturers in recent years. Why do manufacturers need to include their own wireless connection managers, "instant support" software, and such? I could understand if this stuff was supported by advertisements or part of a third-party contract (e.g. Norton), but HP, Toshiba, Acer, and all the rest seem to be including ridiculous amounts of software on new Vista machines, most of which simply provide different interfaces to features that Vista already handles well on its own. Acer, for some reason, seemed to see fit that they include their own utilities for managing power profiles, wireless and wired connections, BitLocker, and a host of other crap that the OS already takes care of. WHY? Uninstalling all of this vendor crap makes a world of difference.
- niallabrown, on 12/18/2007, -4/+27I didnt get time to read the entire article, but please note that installing Dreamweaver and Flash is as easy and downloading and doubble clicking on "Wine Doors." It's a nice and very easy way to run those progarms.
- arjie, on 12/18/2007, -2/+23Ha ha, so predictable. http://xkcd.com/322/
- rstarr, on 12/18/2007, -1/+21The world is big, man. There's people into all sorts of crazy stuff.
Some guys even get off on dragons ***** cars. - TeacherOfHeroes, on 12/18/2007, -6/+26Write to Canon and ask them to create linux drivers. You alone won't be able to sway them, but if enough people let them know they want linux support, they might just listen (or a competitor will, either way we win). Demanding these things from hardware companies is the only way to get them to do anything.
- moocow1452, on 12/18/2007, -9/+26They have invaded our domain!
TO THE BUNKERS!!!! - TeacherOfHeroes, on 12/18/2007, -2/+19If you're interested, VirtualBox allows you to run windows XP in 'sealmess' mode (just the application windows, no backgrounds/desktop/icons), and you can set it up to share folders (special folders, even your home folder). You should be able to run anything except 3D-accelerated stuff on linux that way if Wine can't do the trick.
- P373Y, on 12/18/2007, -4/+21you can have your windows taskbar on the side also. i dont know why you would want to, but you can
- Aensland, on 12/18/2007, -6/+23True... the 'nuxes have a ways more to go before they're easily operated by the non-techie. Also, I'm a gamer, primarily, which is why I haven't made the transition.
- UtahApocalyse, on 12/18/2007, -5/+21Thats the great thing with Ubuntu, Its fully customizable. You can event have it on the side if you wanted.
- BluAardvark, on 12/18/2007, -0/+16Er, it's not so much of a myth as it is a demonstrable fact.
- trylleklovn, on 12/18/2007, -3/+18TRAP!

- KloroFormd, on 12/18/2007, -2/+16Why DX10 when OpenGL is more efficient at handling textures, and is capable of everything DX10 is?
- theblt, on 12/18/2007, -6/+20"So what else I can ask for?"
Adobe CS3 support through Wine. When that happens I'll finally be able to make a complete switch. - Soave, on 12/18/2007, -5/+18MS Office 07 is FAR better than OpenOffice.org, and don't even try to argue that.
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 12/18/2007, -1/+14Sorry, wrong URL.
A good source of debs not in the ubuntu repos is http://www.getdeb.net/ - weizilla, on 12/18/2007, -10/+23From the article: "therefore had some issues and had to do some tweaks when installing some applications but nothing I can’t handle with some effort."
I wonder how much time and effort it really took. Everytime I try to install something that's not in Synaptic, it ends up being a hour of searing on Ubuntu Forum followed by half hour of copy and pasting random commands. - ronaldmonster, on 12/18/2007, -2/+14I like both, I'm dual booting right now actually. Both have there ups and downs but honestly I think you should use what you like.
- davidrools, on 12/18/2007, -1/+13It's not enough that the software's free?
- DarkN00b, on 12/18/2007, -2/+14"Canon doesnt support my printer, a common printer at that.. Canon IP1800 , and it has trouble with wifi."
Fixed that for ya. Same goes for WiFi. - banmaster, on 12/18/2007, -2/+13Remember though, its NOT Vista's or MS's fault that computer manufacturers do this *****!!
I build PCs as part of my living, and ONLY the bare necessities get installed and the PCs run like lightning. - Uriptical, on 12/18/2007, -0/+10Songbird should be a workable replacement, once it comes out of beta.

- arbulus, on 12/18/2007, -1/+11You can put the taskbar where ever you want. Move it to the bottom if you like. Move it to the side if you like. Move it to the top if you like. Delete it completely if you want. It's up to you.
- ernasty10050, on 12/18/2007, -1/+10Holy *****!
Maybe I'm the only one who didn't know that actually existed, but here.
http://jalopnik.com/assets/resources/2007/10/drago ... - inactive, on 12/18/2007, -1/+10Ive heard a lot of complaints about Office 07. I personally have no intentions on buying somthing like that when I can work with OOo and get everything I need done.
- inactive, on 12/18/2007, -2/+11I would say linux runs on more architectures then windows. Why? because its community likes putting it on weird *****. toasters, watches, dreamcasts, toys, etc. Every home console from this generation and last has the linux kernel booting now (even the psp recently). It is quite untrue that windows runs on the greatest number of hardware setups...
- helixed, on 12/18/2007, -0/+9Hey, I'm running Grand Theft Auto San Andreas on my Ubuntu laptop right now using Wine. It really wasn't that hard to get running. You can run a bunch of Windows games under Linux, and in my experience they tend to run a hell of a lot better. As for the MS Office 07, I use open office, which seems to be adequate. The only one you've got me on is Photoshop. Gimp just doesn't cut it, so I run a virtual PC to take care of that. It's a little bit of a hassle, but on the other side of things I don't have to screw with spyware or adware, and my computer runs faster.
- Ev3nt372, on 12/18/2007, -2/+11Yeah bloatware pisses me off. It just makes me want to nuke and pave a legit copy of Windows with a not so legit copy of Vista or XP. At least you will start off with a clean slate. I could understand why people would want Ubuntu after being spammed to death on their new systems.
- TeacherOfHeroes, on 12/18/2007, -5/+14Personally, I find it insulting to shell out hundreds of dollars for a computer and *still* have to scrub it of advertizements. I get the impression that half of it is greed, and the other half it an attempt to differentiate themselves through custom software - lets face it, what *real* differences are there between the big OEMs?
Since most of the time they don't even give you a vanilla-windows cd anymore, you can't even reinstall. It probably took less time to set up ubuntu than it would have to clean up a junked-up version of Vista. - inactive, on 12/18/2007, -1/+9Office 07 - urgh. Photoshop - oh I see - you must be use it professionally, no doubt you paid for it too.
- ArthurSucks, on 12/18/2007, -0/+8There's a tool for WOW in Wine-Doors that makes it painless if you hit a road block. Good luck!
- orph3us, on 12/18/2007, -2/+10ya, amazing that more people don't know about ubuntu, or can't seem to get it up and running. I hope drivers are written for linux in the future so more people can make the switch, but my experience has been nothing but butter (until I bought an ati 3870 2 weeks ago) Now with my ATI card, I have to wait another 2 weeks til drivers are released for it, but really, for browsing the web, chatting on AIM, messing about in the OS, Ubuntu was a more enjoyable experience. Resolution Independence, eye candy(i love wobbly windows!), virtual desktops that work (compared to the hacks for Windows), powerful terminal commands, enhanced configuration... I love it. I bought this ati card knowing it had problems with XGL, and drivers wouldn't be out for a while, but I'm crossing my fingers that ATI/AMD has finally gotten on track, and I think they may be. With 7.12 drivers, I should have support for XGL on my 3870, next driver releases should include bug fixes and speed improvements... I think the future is rosy for Linux. Ubuntu has a tough job, but they are doing well in bringing the masses to Linux. If vendors were to include Ubuntu upon selling their machines, drivers wouldn't be a problem and after playing with the OS for a while I think most people would prefer it over Windows (if not only for games, but if people don't adopt it, games will never come). That said, it still has problems... Wireless networking sometimes just craps out after a while, and I either had to reboot, or ifconfig down/up the device from the terminal which didn't always work. But the options for power are there, more so than in Windows. Learn linux people, use it. It's really worth it. If you're reading digg and you have the time, you're already geeky enough to be able to learn the nuances that you need to navigate around linux. Best of all, after you have learned a bit, you might even feel compelled to give back to the community and possibly make your own programs :D .. Long shot for most people, but knowing its community software gives you a warm fuzzy feeling and you want to learn :P ... i'm rooting for it, I hope game makers take notice and do more to release their games for it. I'm looking at you Valve and Blizzard :)
- andrewbash, on 06/11/2009, -0/+8One example off the top of my head.... a low latency kernel.
