- sjvn, on 01/02/2009, -6/+49Alas, CW blogs don't come with copy editors. I'm all too well aware of my copy editing lacks.
Steven - HonoredMule, on 01/02/2009, -23/+56Stephen, I always enjoy reading your articles and usually find some compelling insight that makes them worth my time, but...
You seriously need an editor. At least don't forget to finish each clause in your sentences, and make sure your edits don't break subject-predicate agreement.
Cheers. - kinthiri, on 01/03/2009, -4/+36Oh for the love of all that is digital. There is no way I would call Android a Desktop platform. Why would I want to use Android vs a complete Linux platform like Ubuntu, Fedora or OpenSuSE? Android doesn't even run glibc or have the ability to run the majority of the GNU platform.
Why would I want that headache? It may have Linux underneath, but it is even less Linux than Darwin is FreeBSD. - mon007, on 01/03/2009, -2/+34Why are digg titles misleading?
- philoking, on 01/03/2009, -12/+35wow, next thing people are going to be saying that Windows is going to be replaced with a toaster, some duct tape and some chewing gum.
- jimminy, on 01/03/2009, -2/+19The article is about Android not being a "phone OS" but more like a regular Linux distro which can be configured to work on a phone and on a desktop. It's not so strange after all, every Linux device and OS run basically the same kernel, only drivers and user interface differ.
- TheWindBlows, on 01/03/2009, -3/+20NO MORE Linux Desktop year BS.
Linux is an OS and has to work its way into part of the market. It's too late for an "instant" take over, but always possible for a piece by piece one. - MrManiac, on 01/03/2009, -1/+18Pics:

- inactive, on 01/03/2009, -0/+12@unlimitedorb: What is wrong with you? Skynet is a reference to the Terminator movies. As successful as TV show might be it doesn't have the audience or cult following (and more than likely it never will) to be the main Terminator reference to anyone.
- bigbangbuddha, on 01/03/2009, -2/+132009, the year of "anything but Windows" desktop.
- mitchlourens, on 01/03/2009, -1/+11The Sarah Connor Chronicles is a tv show based on the original movies.
- Dylson, on 01/03/2009, -3/+13Well i'm tired of your bitching and so is Google. Get off the internet if you don't like it. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy the presence of our Google overlord.
- o6uoq, on 01/03/2009, -2/+11Wow - MapReduce. Yes, amazing stuff. Go read up on MS scalability etc. Might not be as good, but considering they were pushing this since the 80's - gotta give credit.
Google has nowhere near the enterprise and depth of penetration into the application market that Microsoft has. I think it's funny how people slate Google as a Microsoft killer, it's like saying Segway is going to kill off automobile the industry.
Both have a place and both have and are doing extremely well - some for a lot longer than the other, but a few Document programs and web-based applications isn't going to deter the multi-billion dollar server/enterprise environment. The PR/media hype is BS and fanboys sadly buy into it.
Yes I've used SharePoint extensively. Question is - have you? Name a better solution for let's say a company with 5,000 employees spanning 30 countries. - deadbaby, on 01/03/2009, -5/+13"After that's done, bringing over OpenOffice 3.0 or the like would be trivial."
^Silly statement. Oo depends on a lot more than just a functional GCC / GNU tool kit. There would be a lot of porting involved -- not the least of which UI toolkit elements and a UI retro-fit to be more Android friendly. To actually make it a decent port there would have to be a lot of optimization of the Oo code-base too. It's not exactly fast even on a higher end desktop at times. I'm sure someone could rush out a crappy version in the next year but that won't be doing anyone a favor. Shoddy quick & dirty ports are usually worse than nothing at all. Gives the whole platform a bad name. - cplusplus, on 01/03/2009, -0/+8Have you seen the Windows source code?
- deepleet, on 01/03/2009, -11/+19Can it run crysis?

- q00u, on 01/03/2009, -6/+12"Alas, CW blogs don't come with copy editors. I'm well aware of my copy editing shortcomings."
For the 2nd sentence, you can also go with "I'm all too aware of my lack of copy editing skills." Or even "I'm well aware that my copy editing is lacking."
That being said, and although your sentences appear to form from different fragments of phrases, your _intent_ is perfectly understandable, if a bit informal.
@deduction, yes, yes, you're very smart. But he is not an English teacher, and this is not a classroom. The purpose of language is to convey meaning. Did you understand what he wrote? Fantastic, the goal has been achieved. Pedantic mistakes are irrelevant.
Perfection is not necessary in language, and is impossible in English. - infiniphunk, on 01/03/2009, -1/+7why do you bother? he doesn't know what source code is.
- Dylson, on 01/03/2009, -2/+8Oh, it happened.
- ukblacknight, on 01/03/2009, -1/+6Not a fact. Have you even used Gmail?
- Scr4tchFury, on 01/03/2009, -2/+72009 is the year for more BS on Digg.
- Krissam, on 01/03/2009, -0/+5Makes a gum wrapper run crysis!
- Bangaarang, on 01/03/2009, -3/+8That would be 5 words.
- martrinex, on 01/03/2009, -3/+8Thankyou why is anyone digging this article up? Android as an PC OS seriously what!!!!
1. Android works on a pc because it is a platform on top of linux plain and simple.
2. The only thing Android could possibly offer on a PC is its web browser, forgive me but I think we already have that!
3. No matter how much you optimize the java platform what android runs on it is still slow, very slow slower the vista even (had to be said)
4. Android does not support mouse move or right click since it is built for phones, you could argue: if they release the OS for PC's they would add that... but then all the third party development for the phone couldn't be re-used on the desktop.
5. Simply why oh why would anyone use Android on a pc? I like Android don't get me wrong its great on phones. - ChayesFSS, on 01/03/2009, -1/+6kudos for linking to somewhere besides gizmodo & engadget for technical news
- epiphonegibson, on 01/03/2009, -7/+11Google Linux desktop huh?
I think it's been here. It's not made by google, but check out gOS http://www.thinkgos.com/ . 3.0 gadgets is pretty much all Google services and such. - Culyt, on 01/03/2009, -2/+6Unlikely they would want OpenOffice, they have Google Docs after all.
With that said, it might not be to hard to get running. Rather than port the UI they could make a GTK theme engine that matches the Android UI.
☢ - buckrogers1965, on 01/03/2009, -2/+6If Microsoft meets the same standard of excellence it achieved with Vista then Windows 7 won't be out for another 2 years and have all it's added features removed.
- RyeBrye, on 01/03/2009, -1/+5I thought the same thing. This guy clearly doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.
