- kmartshopper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There are a lot of reasons why you might want to use a third party firmware. They offer a lot of features not found in the Linksys firmware. I use mine for a very specific purpose. My electric bill is through the roof. I can't turn off my computer because I need to access documents on it. It's the main cause of my high electric bill (it's basically the only thing running in my apartment). I'd use WOL but my Linksys firmware didn't give me the option of forwarding a broadcast packet onto th network. I couldn't SSH into my router because the Linksys firmware doesn't allow for SSH. With my third party firmware, I can SSH into my box and run a wol client, thereby allowing me to turn off my computer when not in use and save some $$$. I can also route packets via SSH through my router. If I am behind my firewall at work, for example, I can tunnel my instant messaging client over a working port. As a plus this traffic is encrypted and my employer can't (or at least not easily can't) read it ;-) Some people use third party firmware to boost their signal power, as a proxy, add more powerful support for VPN/firewall rules, etc. Do a google search for more. I use OpenWRT on my Linksys WRT54GS...
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can modify any WRT54G as long as it's V.4 or less (v3, v2, etc).
They all run GPL code.
I have many WRT's out there running HyperWRT (and WAP's running HyperWAP)
Love the firmware!
(just be careful no to buy the V5)
however, to be on the safe side - just buy the WRT54GL.
;) - sakibomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this is not a consolidated hacking guide for the WRT54GL.
- beandog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@cliche_kitty
In layman's terms -- you can do more. Its like giving you a car and the engineering plans to let you do whatever you want with it, versus just giving you the keys and not letting you touch anything except flip a few switches. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5A nice guide. Although my own site is pretty good I think. http://www.wrt54g.net That's http://wrt54g.net LOL ;) +Digg
- JohnnySoftware, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't there a data book available for the chip?
Engineers do not usually design/test boards for chips based on sense of smell, unless they are very intrepid. - aaronmarks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.dd-wrt.com
- sublime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2WRT54GL's are a rip off. too bad
Look at the serial number on WRT54G's to tell the version number
CDFB = v5 (bad)
CDFA = v4 (good) - agentgray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is in no way a guide. It's a starting point of links....like a web.
Sigh.
Anyway, with aftermarket firmware you can do things like turn a 60$-70$ router into a $600-$700 router. We actually use them in our remote locations and with telecommuters. Simply amazing.
However, something the article didn't mention. For a while all you could get was the vXWorks version. Why? Many theories exist but one is that Linksys was bought by Cisco and who would by a $600 Cisco router when they could modify a $60 Linksys? Hence, the version 5 router was born. There was no "L" version for a while...but then Cisco/Linksys started to see a drop in sales. Hmmm.... - davdav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can we please promote our own sites more?
(To the commenters) - cliche_kitty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And, as of yet, no one has broken this down into "layman's terms".
- evil-doer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i bought a wrt54gs just two days ago. im lovin' it. (using dd-wrt firmware)
- cliche_kitty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was completely lost. Will someone please explain to me why you would hack your router?
- harpdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have been using a linksys wrt54g and the gs for a few years now. I really got into the wrt54g when I installed alchemy firmware from sveasoft. The current firmware Talisman available from sveasoft gives me a read/write partition on the wrt54g. This is really cool as I no longer have to rely on a webserver to wget my firewall scripts into the router. It is a shame however you have to pay a 20 dollar subscription for this firmware.
I am hoping similiar firmware will become availabe from the wrt54gl, - theantidote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the same as the WRT54G v4 by the way. There's absolutely no difference. Linksys decided to sell this because of the success of the Linux models in the modding communities.
- WolfNinja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What kind of additional features can you get using third party firmware?
- eco2you, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Hmm, I didn't know you could do this with Linux? I dont really see how it's hacking thou? http://www.eco2you.co.uk
- tomvendetta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For better firmware upgrades... Linksys is too damn lazy to update it themselves.
@wolfninja and kitten - br0kenb1nary, on 11/12/2007, -0/+0Thats pretty weak and has no hacks whatsoever. Check out http://brokenbinary.ca/ for a complete guide with all files.
Cheers. - cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"WRT54GL's are a rip off. too bad

Agreed, with one addition. Anything less than "B" is ok, 0-9 and A are the earlier versions. The good ones are still on store shelves, Best Buy, Walmart. They will probably be gone soon though. - pabs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 I'm digging the suggestion about the Asus WL-500g.
That, combined with a USB sound card and MPD, might be just what I need to build a cheap music server for my room. - smbgood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this article was good if you really want to know about the inner workings of the WRT54GL, but for me, I am more interested in third-party firmware capabilities, and that is where this article falls short
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Accually WRT54.net is a very tight site.
thanks.
http://www.ramsinks.com says so. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You're not actually "hacking it". That's just a term used. All you're really doing is upgrading the existing version of Linux on it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0WRT54GLs cost slightly more because they only sell about 10,000 a month. Where as they sell hundreds of thousands a month of the WRT54G. I think I still have that article on the front page of http://www.wrt54g.net . ;)
- cliche_kitty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0>>>All you're really doing is upgrading the existing version of Linux on it.
So, what does this accomplish in the end, besides just saying that you did it? And yes, I know a lot of hacking projects are just to say "you've done it". - daduke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0WTR54GL sucks, this version is just a trick to charge people more for the same old hardware... while the mainstream version (G) is downgraded.
Too bad linksys was bought by Cisco...
I bought an asus wl500g deluxe, for the same price as the WRT54G, but it comes with a 200MHz proc, more flash, more RAM, and 2 USB 2 ports.
You can flash it with openWRT too, forget about Cisco, Linksys is dead. - tupuli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0WRT54GL is for suckers
- Zonkzor, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0What are some other good routers to modify? I have a microsoft router/access-point. I never really thought of possibility's of these things but hey, everything is getting more and more powerful these days. Soon our toasters will have enough power to run an OS.
