- t1t0, on 12/12/2008, -0/+68I have the same problem with my DVD player. The cables are in front but the tray for the disc is in the back... Stupid Panasonic.
- MarkusX, on 12/11/2008, -0/+41Article quote:
"The product design isn’t exactly flushed out, either: For example, the connection ports are on the front and there is no way to hide any cables."
I always thought, the other side (plain black) was the front, but I guess it's probably a matter of definition. :-) - kalel90, on 12/12/2008, -0/+11Stick an atom in it and there good to go. People always underestimate the power of the intel atom in reviews it boots and runs everything but games & transcoding as well as my core2duo desktop.
- PyrosMagus, on 12/12/2008, -5/+16the logo looks like boobs
I bet i get buried - kelchm, on 12/12/2008, -4/+14The chick that wrote this article is an absolute moron.
- MtheoryX, on 12/12/2008, -0/+10The Mac Mini is the same way. Ports AND power button on the back. The front only has a sleep indicator light and a CD/DVD slot.
- DreadKnight, on 12/12/2008, -0/+9She must be joking about the connectors being on the front side....then you would be looking at the cherries upside-down.. and it's not like there's something else on the "back".
- MtheoryX, on 12/12/2008, -0/+9Might be a great option for a Car-puter.
- onelikeseabass, on 12/12/2008, -0/+6The way the logo is printed indicates to me that the connection ports are indeed on the back. My power supply has a switch on it. Does that mean my PC is facing backwards?
- popophobia, on 12/12/2008, -0/+6it looks more like a sack
- subliminalurge, on 12/12/2008, -0/+6Agreed. I bought my wife an Acer Aspier One for christmas, and had fairly low expectations given the price. I'm absolutely blown away buy how powerful that little machine is. And the fact that it gets 6 hours of use off of the battery.
The atom is an excellent little processor. - FredFredrickson, on 12/12/2008, -0/+6Shouldn't that be "fleshed out?"
- Anand999, on 12/12/2008, -0/+6I don't get this review. He complains there is no DVD/CD drive.... Flash drives are much more convenient for casual file storage and you can legally acquire the large majority of new music online these days, so I think the CD and DVD are heading the way of the floppy disk anyway, so I'd glad they shaved a few bucks off the price instead of including a CD/DVD drive (nevermind the fact they'd have to make the device considerably larger just to physically fit a CD/DVD drive...).
As for "only" having two USB ports, wireless keyboard/mouse combos are pretty common these days and they usually only use 1 USB port for both, so you'd still have 1 free port. If you really needed more than that, USB hubs ("USB port replicator"? really?) are practically free at Fry's. Anyway, I see a device like this more likely being a 2nd or 3rd PC (e.g. for the kid's room or kitchen) that will be accessing storage and printers over its network connection.
The only thing I would change is replace the VGA port with a DVI-I port. Can you even still buy CRT monitors anymore? I can't remember the last time I saw Fry's advertise one. Sure most LCD monitors can take a VGA connection but DVI is much better. DVI-I still allows the possibility of using a DVI->VGA adapter if you really needed VGA. - Tollboi, on 12/12/2008, -0/+5I really felt that way about the whole article. I mean you got a computer for 250$ and it is the size of an ipod! All of her expectations were much too high I think.
"When utilizing Firefox to navigate the web, I noticed that Firefox runs extremely slow. Don’t expect Firefox to zip along like in your multicore PC"
Huh? was there someone expecting that? - mdude85, on 12/12/2008, -0/+5Can anyone please explain why you would buy one of these instead of spending $50 more on a netbook?
I'm just wondering why I need a computer that fits in my pocket if all the peripherals needed to use it cannot also fit in my pocket? - meghalc, on 12/12/2008, -1/+6400Mhz Freescale processor wouldn't be too good for anything but play MP3 files. And in that case, you rather just hookup a mp3 player instead...
- cawpin, on 12/12/2008, -0/+4This thing would be perfect for a minimalist MAME setup. Just a controller, the PC and a monitor.
- JQP123, on 12/12/2008, -0/+4The only thing I see to recommend this is physical size. Otherwise, there are more capable machines available for similar (or even lower) cost such as the ones here:
http://www.devonit.com/ - DangerCollie, on 12/12/2008, -8/+12For a second I read the headline as CheneyPal. I was picturing a device that growls at you constantly and periodically shoots you in the face.
It can only be charged at an undisclosed location. - MtheoryX, on 12/12/2008, -0/+4I lol'd.
- sooska, on 12/12/2008, -2/+6Let me know when you get a Cherry2000.
- hamobu, on 12/12/2008, -0/+4In my opinion, computers like that will be better once they are under $50. Also more USB ports are needed. I could see a fammily buing a small PC for a school age kid the way they would buy a jacket or a book at the local store.
Also in the office, they could stack PCs in the supply cabinets right next to the three ring binders. Once your PC breaks, go get another one. - BorsKaegel, on 12/11/2008, -0/+3Looks like a Sega Genesis cartridge.
- CylonsOfTheLamb, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3OK, I'm a fairly conservative guy with my political leanings, and that made me laugh. I don't understand why you're being dugg down. Cheney's parent's knew they had created something evil to walk the earth, that's why they named him Dick.
You forgot to mention that it's powered by a duracell pacemaker battery. - drunkenoaf, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3If it runs the Citrix Metaframe (or Xen or whatever it's called now) client I can see quite a few places going for it.
- eeclark, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3This is what Michael Knight used in K.I.T.T., isn't it?
- smoger, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3ok,.. so even without a mechanical hard drive... an 8gb sd card is like 25 bucks.
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -4/+78gb of space for $249? smaller than a router? sign me up!
- Stonekeeper, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3Cheap thin client device?
- InThePants, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3Could be an interesting device for running small gadgets here and there.
- onelikeseabass, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3The way the logo is printed indicates to me that the connection ports are indeed on the back. My power supply has a switch on it. Does that mean my PC is facing backwards?
- Taiyoryu, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3Does it support Linux Terminal Server via PXE or Etherboot? It looks like a really cheap and space-saving platform for terminal workstations.
- JohnnyKinder, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3haha, my office is located right next to these guys....I had NO idea what they did until now.
- FlareHeart, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3More USB ports are easily added using a USB hub. Those are really cheap now.
- Homerr, on 12/12/2008, -1/+4CherryPal sounds like a pocket pussy device.
- firstpeak, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3Oh, it is SFW! And here I was thinking I'd found the perfect gift for my wife for Christmas.
- 42Vindictive, on 12/12/2008, -1/+4Dude, did you just come out of stasis or something?
- LanceUppercut, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3good luck getting laid with that thing.
- shortyjacobs, on 12/12/2008, -1/+3Oh come on, that's hilarious!! what dicks are digging you down?
- inactive, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2You do know that all of my harddrives have had mechanical problems right? No moving parts is the way to go. Sure I don't care if I can get 2TB for $120 bucks, but if it dies and I loose my data forever, then pfft, I rather pay $50 for 5GB for a reliable hard drive.
- sagien, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2You'd be a gargoyle.
(Snow Crash, Neal Stephenson) - ScottyMcBaggs, on 12/12/2008, -2/+4You do know that said external drive is mechanical right?
- evilgourmet, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2wonderful hacking machine, take it to the hack
- FlareHeart, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2I agree with you MarkusX. I would just turn it around. It's not that large that it would be a problem to reach behind it to turn it on or off, and using a USB extension cable and a USB hub would give you more USB ports and make them more reachable anyway.
I would just have the ports to the back. - CylonsOfTheLamb, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2I have the Asus EEE PC901 with the atom processor in it. I have a bunch of movies in avi file format that I got from some pirates, and the playback on them is pretty smooth.
- shortyjacobs, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2yeah, but that's stupid. Why buy a super itty bitty compact pc thing that you then have to strap a big honkin' USB hub to?
- Tiak, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2Part of the point was that you could hide it until you could find somewhere you wouldn't actually be seen using it. :P
- bitterbug, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2Why does he go on about Cloud computing? Just because software has to be installed over the network instead of a CD drive, and it has firefox? Where's the jargon police when you need them.
- mattb5, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2First I've heard of this device. Looks interesting.
- arizonagroove, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2At US$250 it seems a little expensive considering that in the UK £99 will get you a Viglen MPC (which is actually something else rebranded but I forget what.)
