http://digg.com/linux_unix/Linus_Torvalds_hates_C
C++ is a horrible language. It ’s made more horrible by the fact that a lot of substandard programmers use it, to the point where it’s much much easier to generate total and utter crap with it. Quite frankly, even if the choice of C were to do *nothing* but keep the C++ programmers out, that in itself would be a huge reason to use C.

If you're a mad scientist, you can use GPLv2'd software for your evil plans to take over the world ("Sharks with lasers on their heads!!"), and the GPLv2 just says that you have to give source code back. And that's OK by me. I like sharks with lasers. I just want the mad scientists of the world to pay me back in kind. I made source code available to them, they have to make their changes to it available to me. After that, they can fry me with their shark-mounted lasers all they want. "

It's a really well written book with lots of insight into his character/personality. - earthforce1, on 07/12/2008, -0/+13I included Stallman because he has his own axe to grind with Linux GNU/Linux anyone?
I think that many programmers don't know how to use the language properly. They write code that functionally works, but runs slow as a pig because they don't pass by reference, and wind up stepping through lists doing expensive deep copying, madly running constructors/destructors on complex objects on every pass. This gives the language a bad rap. Pass by reference on all but elementary types!!
That being said, it looks like they implemented a half ass garbage collector with smart pointers - if you want to add automatic garbage collection as a language extension fine - but do a proper job with it, or don't do it at all. - chilidbz, on 07/12/2008, -0/+13Did he know them off of the top of his head? anyway, Americans have an irrational deep fear of communism. I really dont see the problem, we just haven't seen an _ideal_ implementation of communism yet. - Crisender111, on 07/12/2008, -1/+12I know C++ is great & all, but my FIRST LOVE will always remain C. - MattBD, on 07/12/2008, -0/+10Linus seems like a decent enough guy to me - he's not a pain the way RMS is, he's prepared to use proprietary software if it does the job - ie Bitkeeper before the free version was withdrawn.

I don't think you have much experience with Linux if you are making claims like that. I've been in both worlds, and I have to say I find Linux much more intuitive for both development and administration (I'm more a developer though). This is after using both for both development and management purposes over the course of years. Obviously it depends on the point of view of the person. But something that really shines in Linux is automation, it's genuinely easy to create a script that accomplishes a complex task. Pretty much every single application in Linux from server side to even desktop side exposes a huge command line interface and is thus very automatable.
The management tools like apt-get really have no peer on Windows either, apt-get is truly the killer app of management for Debian.
Interestingly enough one of my major skills is .NET and I do .NET and C# development on Linux. In fact .NET development is very easy to accomplish on Linux thanks to the Mono project (http://www.mono-project.com/%29, it's possible to do all aspects of .NET development using Mono, from web applications to client side rich applications. So all those great Windows development tools are actually not exclusive to Windows. In fact, they are a bit more flexible on Linux, on a Linux server, you don't need to run a graphical subsystem to run .NET (like you do on Windows) - Mono works without an X11 dependency. - samartha, on 07/12/2008, -0/+7My favorite quote of Linus is "Talk is cheap. Show me the code"
- m1zl3d, on 07/12/2008, -0/+7He just developed the kernel for Linux. Flash player and Firefox are different than the Linux kernel itself.
If you want a good and stable Linux distro that works out of the box you should use Ubuntu. - pauleric, on 07/12/2008, -0/+7Probably because Linus Torvalds didn't say that. Eric S Raymond said that when describing Linus's methods.
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -0/+6Are you using a different XP than everyone else in the universe? My Linux box has never crashed, but my XP laptop crashes at least once a week.
- DiggRage, on 07/12/2008, -1/+7You completely miss the point of open source.
Just because the source code is provided and you can do whatever you want with it, this does not mean that the creators and maintainers of that software are going to let you freely change their copy of the code they distribute. It's not like they are giving you commit rights to their code repository. You can alter your own copy of the source code, but not theirs, and guess what, nobody is downloading it from you.
Also, if you can get on your friends computer and alter an open source program, you can just as easily do the exact same kind of damage to non-open source programs. This point has nothing to do with open source software.
Lastly, most companies have disclaimers on their software that attempts to limit their liability. And liability just means you can sue for damages, after the damage is done. If you need that, go ahead and pay for it, but it doesn't necessarily mean the software is less likely to have flaws or code put in by a malicious programmer working for such a company.
I could go on, but you really need to think more about this. You will probably discover that these issues you describe are not problems with open source software specifically, but with software in general. And in truth, open source software enables everyone and anyone to scrutinize source code, which can only help make software more secure. - isuisorisuaint, on 07/12/2008, -8/+14he must have a sense of humor....check out his wife: http://www.yle.fi/linna98/photos/photo46_i.jpg

Dear Linus,
From all of us here at the Fedora Project we just wanted you to know we're very
pleased you're testing Fedora 9 and filing bugs. We also wanted to let you know
that we're never gonna give up fixing these bugs.We know when we do our best
we're never gonna let our users down. Sometimes it may feel like it but we're
never gonna give you the run around on these bugs, either. We don't want to
desert you nor you to desert us.
As frustrating as they are we hope we're never gonna make you cry.
Sincerely,
Seth Vidal
Fedora Project Board Member.
Comment #33 From Paul W. Frields on 2008-04-04 15:30 EST [reply]
The Board wishes it to be known that:
1. Mr. Vidal has, in the parlance of second-rate spy movies, "gone rogue," and
has posted on behalf of the Board without the required routing through several
committees, endless cross-posted discussion, and explicit approval, and
therefore his pay will be docked accordingly.
2. He is clearly an enormous Rick Astley fan, although he attempts to disguisse
this fact through paraphrase.
3. We love you, Linus! *scream*
4. We wish for Mrs. Torvalds not to visit pain upon us, and thus thank our
community for stepping in and helping Linus get this bug handled.
5. Because it's Friday, things may get a little silly around here. Oh, and mind
the gap.

Fedora Project Leader - mossblaser, on 07/12/2008, -0/+5Ah - you must be the guy who microsoft based their FUD campaign on!
- kundason, on 07/12/2008, -0/+5The problem with C++ is not at all programmers writing slow programs or doing deep copy. Performance is hardly ever an issue in software projects. Any experienced program manager can tell you that.
The problem with C++ is that in order to produce something decent with it you need to be an expert. And since in corporates most development groups are made from programmers of varying quality you always get a mess by definition. This is why C++ is terrible for the industry, not for you personally.
If you like to program in a difficult language that takes 10 times as long to program than any other decent language then you are welcome to it. No one will try to stop you. - JQP123, on 07/12/2008, -3/+8"I really dont see the problem, we just haven't seen an _ideal_ implementation of communism yet."
And you never will.

"Still you have to quantify the quality of the Windows development tools."
I laughed my balls off.
The software for development on Windows doesn't even come close to holding a ***** candle to the devel tools available for Unix-likes. (e.g. text editors and compilers just to pick two not-so-random examples) - spaceman77, on 07/12/2008, -0/+5I have some more ...

"Which mindset is right? Mine, of course. People who disagree with me are by definition crazy. (Until I change my mind, when they can suddenly become upstanding citizens. I'm flexible, and not black-and-white.)"
"I'm always right. This time I'm just even more right than usual"
