tons. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16u dont...
- jgfoot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I tried this out last night, and I was very impressed. I never had the patience to get Beryl working on Ubuntu. (Yeah, that probably says more about how impatient I am than it says about how tough Ubuntu might be). This distro auto-recognized my hardware perfectly (NVidia Geforce). It was also nice to see that it included all of the "non-free" stuff that Ubuntu makes you install yourself, like Flash and MP3 codecs.
- RipperMortis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Congratulations.. Shame that's the wrong version.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Feisty Fawn (Ubuntu 7.04) will come in a similar form, but it might stay orange/brown and contain nothing on par in terms of preloaded packages (about 4 GB). Still, it's Debian, not Gentoo.
- gronne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Am I better off installing the x86-32 edition even though I have a AMD64 system? The 64bit distros always seem to be flakey.
What about Core 2 Duo? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7torrent works just fine
http://www.linuxtracker.org/download.php?id=3193&name=SabayonLinux-x86-3.2.torrent - 10scjed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I, too, am very impressed. I have reservations re: GPL ala kororaa, but I have always loved Gentoo and rue the day it was wiped off my laptop. My server is still Gentoo, and my laptop may become sabayon... just wish they'd leave installing the proprietary drivers to the end user.
This is a great example of why we need the video card companies to play nice with GPL, or a new video card company. - tarun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I tried the 64-bit version with a Nvidia 7300LE last weekend and XGL/Beryl didn't work for me. Anyone have a similar experience with the 7300LE?
- invar9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I discovered this distro in version 3.0 R2 and booted off the live DVD and was blown away. I had been fighting with gentoo for about a week with the XGL and my sound. When I booted up off of the live DVD EVERYTHING worked. I was sold then. It is a great way to show windows users something different to pop in a DVD and run sabayon and then reboot into XP and see how bad it is. This is a GREAT windows converter.
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Let me just say... I have tested this and it a great way to test drive Beryl, but I would not recommend for anyone to install sabayon linux unless they are comfortable with Gentoo and know what they are getting into. For those new to Linux or those that want an OS that is easy to maintain and install software on definitely tryout ubuntu edgy and use Automatix and Automatix Bleeder to get your system fully multimedia functional it's very easy and Automatix Bleeder will even install Beryl for nvidia users. Ati users can use this guide http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install/Ubuntu/Edgy/XGL
- searayman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5i dont think beryl was at all hard to install. I actually found it much easier then i thought. It is soo well documented on how to install it in Ubuntu edgy that it only took a couple of minutes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The tubes of teh internets is clogged!
- bloqmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I dont see why it shouldnt be able to, besides its a live disk and it wont do any damage if it doesnt work.
- inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well my SR is 279% and I'm downloading a 12kbps.. that is bad
- bllambert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it would have been spam if i were involved with this distro. I am not. I am not involved with any software projects. I just recently checked it out and thought that the rest of digg might enjoy it as much as I did.
- TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been running portage and it works just fine. It is gentoo, except the install is precompiled and it comes with a ton of programs. Everything else is exactly the way it is in gentoo.
I think one of the best things about portage is that you kind of have to try to break it. Its a very robust tool, you just have that huge learning curve to get over first. - bllambert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I checked it out this past weekend, and was very impressed as well. I showed my wifes family, and they started asking a lot of questions about linux. It comes with the latest Beryl Flame/Burn plugins, but you have to select them from the beryl manager. This is the best looking live dvd I have ever seen, and I have tried a lot lately.
- TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I found this one on distrowatch last friday. I had an open partition on my hard drive waiting for linux. The problem is, my mobo has the Intel 965P chipset. Ubuntu wouldn't install and I had read that the 2.6.18+ kernel finally supported it, but I couldn't find any distros that included it by default.
It sounded really cool so I downloaded it (straight from their servers I was pulling down ~1mbps consistently!), burnt it and popped it in a couple hours later.
Wow! I was extremely impressed. Detected everything, 965P chipset, no-name bluetooth adapter, GeForce 7600, everything. Then I went to youtube and was pleasantly surprised that flash worked just fine. It plays mp3s, dvds, did everything I could throw at it, and it looked damn good too.
I would definitely recommend this distro to anyone, as long as they aren't "free software" zealots.
I don't know what it means, but Sabayon! - tranix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2nm, after further research, I am amazed to discover that codecs and dvd decrypting are built-in.
- invar9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You might have to pass it some option on boot. If you read thru the boot screens you should get it enabled. I had to pass it sabayon aixgl xdriver=nvidia with a 7900GS I think the xdriver=nvidia is your key
- sworoc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What kind of wifi driver support does this have out of the box?
- westyvw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have played with the live dvd for a while (months?) and I have yet to install it. My question is, has anyone installed Sabayon then used Emerge and other standard Gentoo tools. Does it follow a nice happy path or does the distro start drifting and breaking?
- Sicarul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's no *****, it would be a greatly worse option to include propietary drivers, at least in the case of ati, they suck. I have an ATI Radeon 9250 and i gave up on fglrx, and i use the 'Radeon' open source driver instead. And it works like a charm.
- TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no, its 3.2. I downloaded 3.2 and installed 3.2.
I'm using it right now, I don't know why you think its 3.1
But yes, it "still" has beryl. I don't know why they would take it out. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just paid the linux store 7 bux for the high-speed download. I couldn't wait 19 days. 66.3K, now. I was getting nothing with the torrent, and the mirrors were even worse... than nothing.
- duhblow7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2gronne
regarding 64-bit, there will be some compatibility issues. things like flash, win32codecs, mplayer plug-in, and more will not work natively. i would recommend the 32bit os for now.
regarding duo core, you'll just need SMP compiled into the kernel. - invar9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well trust me, if it takes a week ( like it did the first time I downloaded 3.0 R2) it is worth it.
- tranix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does this have win32 codecs and dvd decrypting also pre-installed? If not, is there an easy way to add them (like automatix does for ubuntu)?
- Majin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dont worry too much about linuxtracker they will come back up shortly their site seems to have some hiccups atm .... *am seeding the bejesus outta this so your welcome *
- huckdunsany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm using a newly-bought 17" MacBook Pro (the new one with the Core 2 Duo) - does anyone know if this will work with this system? I did a little digging on google but didn't see any clear-cut answers. Thanks!
- tranix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tip... Firefox multimedia is reported to crash is this version (3.2). So, you may want to wait until version 3.3 before downloading if you have a slow connection.
- Four20, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1here is the direct iso link
ftp://dotdot.mine.nu/sabayon/SabayonLinux-x86-3.2.iso
im maxing out at 775K/s - CompUSAEmployee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've had this distro installed on my measly Acer 3624 laptop for a week now, no problems what so ever. For kicks we stuck the Live DVD in the 24" Imac at work and everything but the wifi worked fine straight from the boot.
- underscore_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This distro works perfectly on my low end Dell B120 Notebook. Intergrated Intel 915 graphics chipset and 512megs of ram. I had kubuntu installed on it which was part of the duel boot with XP. Guess I wasn't "geeky enough" to figure out Beryl on my own. The only drawback was letting the torrent run for two days to get the 3 gigs.
- invar9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well the transgaming has came a long way and I think that DirectX9 works pretty well. But for now I can just play BF1942 with desert combat. I have saw where people have gotten BF2 to run but reading the how to's...it was a little over my head.
- jgfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@gronne: I have an Athlon 64, and I used the normal i386 version in my trial.
@searayman: I ran through the Beryl on Edgy tutorial once, probably screwed it up, and gave up really quickly. Which, again, is a commentary on my perseverance, not on Ubuntu's ease of use. But hell, Sabayon requires no more knowledge than being able to open, and then close, my DVD drive. That, even I could handle. - YoDiggity2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just an FYI, beryl has been running fine for over a month on my 3 year old laptop with integrated intel graphics! I was pretty shocked. I had previously tried to get XGL going but it used way too much cpu and was slow.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The FTP and HTTP are choked and the BT tracker (Linuxtracker.org/announce) is Down (Error 3)!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've recently become a fan of thelinuxstore.ca. Shipping is a bit slow for me in the states, but they always have the latest releases at low prices, and take paypal. You can get the 6 DVD ubuntu release there. It will be interesting to see if the other half of my hardware will be recognized when i get it.
- SiCk666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It seems to be nice, and another opportunity for learn some of Gentoo, not only debian (ubuntu) :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Me too. ATI sure seems to be the problem here.
- tranix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No gui with Unichrome integrated motherboard graphics, even though the driver is open source openchrome.org. The gui came up on my dell laptop, but any attempt to enable xgl or aixgl caused lockup (built-in ati laptop video). But, if you have an modern nVidia, this distro will have you squealing like a school girl.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lets hope these bundled drivers will pick me up where Ubuntu left me.
- bllambert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It works just fine with my ATI 9600
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nope. Guess I'll have to wait for my new Nvidia card to get here.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The listing says it works with ATI. Any ATI users having success? (Especially 200 series) This has been the problem with every linux distro I've tried on this comp. nvidia on the way...
- BassJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good damn it! I'm stuck at work and can't start this off until I get home this evening (my net connection was down this morning so | can't even remote into my home machines!)
Looks good tho, will be interesting to see what it does on my laptop, I installed XGL/Compiz on it but it ran slower then it does with Windows :-) - truck87bp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First distro that recognized everything. It also gave my Nvidia a higher screen resolution 1600x1200 which was fabulous compared to 1024x768. Looked awesome!
I hope Ubuntu incorporates some of this stuff. Going to an Ubuntu Digg to talk up Sabayon. To be fair to Ubuntu, CD install v.s. Sabayon, DVD install. -
