- lonniebiz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I downloaded an ran the new version of Puppy Linux on Wednesday. It's fine for what its intent is, but there's one thing I found to be "under-automated":
Most Linux distributions assume by default that you are connecting to a LAN that has a DHCP server that assigns you an IP address. If this is actually the case, then you have an internet connection upon the first booting.
Puppy Linux makes people with this common setup have to setup there internet connection by answering questions in a wizard. This is unnecessary.
Like other distributions, Puppy Linux ought to assume there is a DHCP server by default, and only require setup if manual configuration is actually necessary. - naraic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Also, if your Inspiron really is as old as dirt, you'll probably have to use the CD version because most of the older BIOSs won't support booting from the USB.
- nooteocsor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Been using it on an old ME w/ frugal install for more than a year now. Very happy with it (thanks, Barry). In fact so happy with it, made a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kAEENMGoP8
- BrettTheUser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You must be a cat person
- tunapez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Haven't had this much clean fun on a Saturday morning since Looney Tunes.
Loading up my neglected 512mb USB and throwing it in the truck glovebox. You never know... - roprot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6If you like PuppyLinux, you'll love SLAX: http://www.slax.org/
Its in the same ilk as Puppy, only I found it a lot easier to make a custom boot CD containing all the tools I needed (Developer environment, etc.) and the modules integration is really very pretty .. using unionfs is terribly smart, and it just made for a nicer 'custom boot CD just for me' experience. If you're into the idea of having your own little smart linux distro on a stick, definitely investigate SLAX as well as Puppy .. - schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8There are better distros for recovery. Puppy is not /specialised/ for this task.
- BuckCynnie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You mean like your parents?
- rabidmonkey1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5So strange, but I had some PSU problems that wiped my hard drives this past week, so I lost my dual Ubuntu/Windows x64 boot and everything (thank god for backups, though).
So, I decided to install Puppy linux to a USB stick after futzing around with DSL for too long.
It is a very nice system to use and runs very fast, even on a memory stick. It's a great backup and I would encourage anyone out there to give it a try. - peestandingup, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I test drove it too. I think its PERFECT for kids & older people who just wanna do a few things with their computer.
- tybris, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Woohoo, my favorite linux distribution. Congratulations to the Barry Kauler and others.
- arcane14, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I have been waiting for such a savior to appear! Now I can get those heretofore lost files off of my old-as-dirt Inspiron.
Sweet nectar. - misterdiggles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There is a very good market for this sort of distro. I had mad trouble with ramdisk linux distros, but this looks very useful. I give a lot of presentations with demo software and bringing it in on a bootable thumbdrive would be mad cool.
- FortyCaliber, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nobody with close toa thousand dollars for a 16GB thumb drive is using it for puppy linux. The more likely option is that Puppy Linux will load on the most commonly found thumb drives... or perhaps a 1GB if YOU RTFA!!!
- sunbiz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A really nice review!! The USB installation of Puppy Linux seems to be very useful to me!! I'm excied to try it, after reading this story
- depro9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1great for old old computers
- Jorophose, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Last I checked, Puppy isn't all that great. The people seem to have felt pissed when I asked why I can't just install it directly. (It needs 128MiB of RAM first to load, and then you can install it and use it with less.) And it doesn't have a widely-used package-management system. I'm a bigger fan of DSL.
That said, if Puppy floats your boat, I'm glad someone's appreciating their hard work. - ladbroke, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Sounds pretty great, buy it'll take a lot more than that to drag me away from Windows ME.
- Carburetor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Awesome OS.
And if anyone want to see puppy in action:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=zT6e1p3RA1w - crazylinuxguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Here's an alternative review of puppy linux. Personally, I felt that puppy is very lacking. Slax has much more to offer.
http://happylinuxthoughts.blogspot.com/2007/10/pup ... - ericsomething, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I've watched Puppy grow from its pre-1.0 days, and it still impresses me. Developer Barry Kauler has put some serious thought, a lot of passion, and some real innovations to this mini-distro. Not an industrial-strength system, but enough power to meet Joe Sixpack's computer needs. Version 3.0 is taking a shot at the Slack-style gslapt system for package management -- it does need a lot of work at this point, but it's a good direction. I use Puppy quite a bit. It's my second-string OS (I use Slack variations up front), but there's always room on my 'puter for this little guy.
- FortyCaliber, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1So, I read this article on LifeHacker yesterday morning... close to 30 hours ago. Digg now picks it up 14 hours ago. Digg seems to pick every article up later than the rest of the world... it seems most diggers are lazy or are only on the computer every so often. Both are true, so WTF?
Incidentally, why don't we just put a permalink submission on the front page for LifeHacker.com... because everyone just submits everything on that site to Digg, anyways. - bobartig, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1What exactly do they mean by load it up on a thumb drive? Thumb drives come in sizes up to 16 GB now, which will clearly hold an OS. Will Damn Small Linux fit on a 32 mb stick?
- cwoolf34, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2Puppy ***** on your pillow at nights.
- ffleming, on 10/10/2007, -14/+1Great, another linux distribution for people too stupid to figure out linux.

What is Digg?
