- TheMAZZTer, on 03/15/2009, -1/+47Good thing the article isn't as bad as the summary.
- feignNU, on 03/15/2009, -2/+34I'm really digging the fact that the linux articles lately seem to be steering away from "10 reasons to try linux" and "long-term windows user tries to install linux without reading any documentation" type blog posts. This one is a good introduction to an important topic. Definitely something everyone who uses linux should read and understand.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 03/15/2009, -0/+24Why do you need user friendliness in a file system, and are you implying that Windows has a user friendly file system?
And why bury something for being "too techie"?
Buried for all around stupidity. - coldkill3r, on 03/15/2009, -0/+24"(or minimal gek description of a Linux file sysem"
Haven't we learned to spellcheck by now? - mikael110, on 03/15/2009, -4/+25great tutorial, I have always wondered how /proc worked.
- Beowulf2112, on 03/15/2009, -3/+24great introduction/crash course in the Linux filesystem
- derge, on 03/16/2009, -0/+18Probably better described as "directory structure" than "filesystem." I think most people consider "filesystem" to be referring to disk based file systems like EXT3, NTFS, etc. Just a thought.

Yay! All the programs are belong to us! - computershack, on 03/15/2009, -1/+12That's about as good an explanation as you're ever going to get. My only gripe with the filesystem layout is having executables under two top directories. For a newbie, it can make finding things a bit of a mare.
- feignNU, on 03/15/2009, -0/+10Use "whereis" or "which" for searching within your path. "locate" searches everything you have permission to see, provided you have it installed, and finally, use "find" if you want a really powerful search tool. Man pages for all these will have proper usage and all that. Also usually "<command> --help" will give you a brief list of available options and arguments.
Not necessarily directing this at you, computershack...just saying there are lots of tools for finding stuff, and if any newbies are reading your post, I wanted to list a few for their benefit. - marx2k, on 03/16/2009, -0/+10Are you a proc-ologist now?
- rieuwa, on 03/16/2009, -0/+6Myself being a user with a strong Windows preference, I still found this a very interesting read out of interest and curiosity. Thank you Linux Format.
- ccolonbackslash, on 03/16/2009, -0/+6I logged in for the first time in over a year to digg this. This kind of article is why I used to love digg.
- Cryptecks, on 03/16/2009, -0/+4What the *****?
- Sammi84, on 03/16/2009, -1/+4Wish I had found an as noob friendly article as this, when I started out with Ubuntu 5 years ago. This is great basic stuff. Thanks!
- saranagati, on 03/15/2009, -0/+3you can also use 'type' to find the path of an executable in your path.
- iridesce, on 03/15/2009, -2/+5Wish I had read this years ago - great intro to the typical linux distribution filesystem - bringing familiarity to something brand new supports change
- feignNU, on 03/16/2009, -0/+3Huh? You disagree that people who use linux should understand the filesystem? Care to explain why?
- id77, on 03/16/2009, -0/+3Great article about Linux, wish we would see more of this kind instead the top lists
- Solkre, on 03/16/2009, -0/+3syntaxgs error
- TetchyTony, on 03/16/2009, -1/+4Extremely helpful - why does everyone expect noobs know all this already? Now I might have a look at Ubuntu again.
- or4n, on 03/16/2009, -0/+2Really nicely written article. Though there are some distribution specific things (like initrd [for example I don't use initrd] and inittab [systems with upstart doesn't necessarily have that file]) which should be changed or at least mentioned somehow.
- feignNU, on 03/16/2009, -2/+4because the better you understand the way your operating system works, the better you can use it. Higher levels of computer literacy among people can only be good in a world as technological as ours.
- vegr, on 03/15/2009, -2/+4A fun read! Should be more of this kind.
- derge, on 03/16/2009, -0/+2What is a better alternative?
- yahoofrom, on 03/16/2009, -0/+2I bleieve his spelclhekcer is boerkn.
- rchargel, on 03/16/2009, -1/+2God I hate emacs. Why does my text editor need its own operating system and psychotherapist? Maybe the psychotherapist is there to deal with the fact that you don't have nearly enough fingers to run emacs.
- vawksel, on 03/16/2009, -0/+1Yeah, Windows is better, for example:
"C:\Program Files"
If the word "Files" wasn't in the name then how would I ever know that there are FILES in there? If it were just called:
"C:\Programs"
Then obviously we would all be hopelessly lost and confused. Better fix the others too:
"C:\Windows Files"
"C:\Documents and Settings Files"
"C:\Temp Files" - bitterrotten, on 03/16/2009, -0/+1As a new linux user, why can't I just find an article that's detailed, easy to read, but not written by a shut-in who's pretending to be a bus driver or making references to 2001 Space Odyssey, or making the most painful puns?
Is it really that hard to write about linux without exposing yourself as a massive tool? - factsahoy, on 03/16/2009, -0/+1What is this complaint about: the file system, or the directory organization?
- GOVATENT, on 03/16/2009, -0/+1yea, i know. but I was just going to wait for a distro upgrade. As you might tell by that sentence I run ubuntu. I know about the power loss deal but because its a laptop I don't have sudden power offs.
- enantiodromia, on 03/16/2009, -0/+1unix haters aka unemployed sysadmins who can't find a job
- feignNU, on 03/16/2009, -3/+4Uh...where did you get the idea that you can't use linux without knowing that? You *can* use it without knowing any of this, I was merely suggesting that learning it will help. Linux really isn't about maintaining a cloud of ignorance about how the system works. It's open so that it can be learned about. If your philosophy is that no one should learn about how computers work, well, then I vehemently disagree with *you*. Honestly, you know just as much about windows. What typically goes in C:\Program Files? What typically goes in C:\Windows? You don't think it's helpful to know that stuff about the way windows works? Why is it so unreasonable to suggest that it would be helpful to learn how your computer is organized? Are you really that averse to learning?
- rchargel, on 03/16/2009, -0/+1I don't get it
- FredFredrickson, on 03/17/2009, -0/+1This is a tour, not a tutorial.
- rchargel, on 03/16/2009, -0/+1chown -R us lilhelper
- Zaggynl, on 03/16/2009, -0/+1Actually ext4 is already here, but I've heard that it doesn't coop as well with power loss as ext2 and ext3 do..
- specialK16, on 03/16/2009, -1/+1"My preferred editor is Vi, but then Hal says I'm weird in other ways, too."
Hehe. - factsahoy, on 03/16/2009, -1/+1Amen.
- BLeAm, on 03/16/2009, -0/+0What's wrong with your language?
- ethana2, on 03/16/2009, -2/+2I disagree vehemently with the last thing you said, but other than that, yeah.
- StankInTheBank, on 03/16/2009, -1/+1A user friendly OS would not require a massive explanation doc full of obscure terms to learn.
- GOVATENT, on 03/16/2009, -1/+1I can't wait for ext4. My hard drive sucks to start with. A laptop sata no ahci 250 gb with 4200 rpm speed. It is so slow when reading and writing.
- BalancingAct, on 04/02/2009, -0/+0LinuxFormat's articles are some of the most noob-friendly of all Linux mags available in the UK. They're generally well thought out. Some mags assume the reader knows more than what they do even though the article is intended as being beginner level, and can therefore leave the reader more confused than when they began reading the article. Linux Format generally don't make that mistake
Good article - ironiridis, on 03/16/2009, -1/+1I'm sorry to say this, lilhelper, but you are an idiot. Stop spouting about things you don't understand.
If you have ever written code and compiled it, you'd know how dumb "Linux needs a standard" sounds. - NyQuil, on 03/16/2009, -1/+1You guys both just exactly read my mind. x3
- PsychoticX, on 03/16/2009, -2/+1"Minimal Geek Description"
It's a goddamn file system. If you're interested in these topics you're not Joe Public. - JantjePietje, on 03/16/2009, -3/+2I accidentally dugg this is there a way to undo that? This is absolutely horribly written
- JohnFlux, on 03/16/2009, -4/+3Because an ordinary user should be able to use linux without knowning what /proc and /sys are.
