- SnowCrashv5, on 04/16/2009, -5/+46The is awesome news and i wish the company the best of luck. If i'm ever in the market for a laptop this is where i'm going. (even though I might slap arch or gentoo on it afterwards, i jsut like knowing my money is going to decent companies.)
- Vadi0, on 04/16/2009, -6/+44Good things come to those who treat Linux as first-class on their website, in hardware and customer support, and the community.
- redrabbit, on 04/16/2009, -0/+22I don't know. The site has a 12 inch laptop with Core Duo (Core 2 Duo for $55 upgrade) for under $750. That's pretty good, since most 12" laptops are usually pricier. I might consider one of those instead of the Asus 1000 HE I've been playing on buying.
- underthewether, on 04/16/2009, -0/+15Frankly most PC parts should work fine, except you should do your research if you are going to use a wireless card. Some are well supported but others are not. Most name brand motherboards are well supported. Both nVidia and ATI graphics work. I built a new PC a couple months ago and everything worked out of the box in Ubuntu 8.10, except for the wireless card. Since the Ubuntu 9.04 beta came out I tried it and now my wireless card works thanks to the new kernel. Check parts reviews and usually someone will say whether or not it works well with Linux.
- redrabbit, on 04/16/2009, -2/+16I am new to the Linux community and am planning on building a PC running Ubuntu soon. Is there a site that lists out what components will give me the least hassle in terms of drivers and whatnot when I'm installing the OS on it?
PS: System76 has free Ubuntu stickers on their site:
http://system76.com/article_info.php?articles_id=9 - darkhero, on 04/16/2009, -0/+11prices suck. I could build a pc for a lot cheaper and install ubuntu myself.
- Licurgo, on 04/16/2009, -1/+11in the future everything will be free
- HiVoltRock, on 04/16/2009, -1/+11I'm all in favor of Ubuntu laptops (I have it installed on my Desktop and laptop), but you can buy one cheaper from Dell or HP and install Ubuntu yourself. It's not like it's hard. The Ubuntu team prides itself on ease of installation. I used comparisons of 320GB hard drives, 2.0GHz Intel pocessors, 3GB memory, standard optical drives, nothing too out there. System 76 just isn't competitive for the price.
System76: $866
Dell: $719
HP: $700
For a free Operating System, they certainly have some crappy prices. Don't get too excited just because they include Ubuntu automatically. - NuBiXx, on 04/16/2009, -4/+13Good news for Ubuntu but still there prices are expensive.
- pinchduck, on 04/16/2009, -0/+8Where do you get parts to build a laptop?
- NuBiXx, on 04/16/2009, -0/+8didn't look at there laptops but there desktops look expensive but then again I am looking at this as If I where to buy the parts and build the PC myself.
- nmanguy, on 04/16/2009, -1/+9Looking at the 76 site, it's like Mac prices, which is quite odd.
- Jareth86, on 04/16/2009, -0/+8Brilliant company, beautiful operating system, ugly-ass laptops.
- RudeTurnip, on 04/16/2009, -1/+8It's no one's business, really. They are accountable only to themselves and not the bottom-feeding stock market. However, it does help a small company to disclose their revenue growth now and then to show the consuming public that people are buying their products.
- inactive, on 04/16/2009, -4/+11if you go from 1 to 2 it's 100% increase. Just FYI.
- bdbr, on 04/16/2009, -1/+8You guys who are digging down everyone who points out that a percent increase means nothing without any rough idea of the scope (dollars) of the growth: why don't you explain why you think its so meaningful?
- geehossiphats, on 04/16/2009, -1/+8i bought a PC from systems76 a little while back. Been working like a champ!
- hanexar, on 04/16/2009, -1/+8Obvious troll
- hanexar, on 04/16/2009, -1/+7I hope this revenue raise will mean drop in price.
- HarleyQuinn, on 04/16/2009, -0/+6System76, may you be successful. I think this is great.
However, please nix the "Glossy" displays from your laptops. This is one area Laptop makers need to NOT follow Apples lead. Especially on a Linux machine where I spend a lot of time in Terminal setup green on black. Glossy must die! - Dumbledorito, on 04/16/2009, -5/+11FTA: "But it’s important to keep all of this “positive” news in perspective. As privately held companies, neither Canonical nor System76 have to disclose their net income or profit margins — so it’s difficult to say just how much money Canonical and its PC partners can ultimately pocket."
Too bad their actual revenue is closed-source. - computershack, on 04/16/2009, -3/+960% compared to what figure? And revenue doesn't mean it is in profit.
- joebaloney, on 04/16/2009, -0/+6Okay, as long as you say so "The Toecutter".
- Feldon, on 04/16/2009, -3/+8With Microsoft now being optional software it's sales will go down and other company that use alternative software will go up. i switch my office to Linux from desktop to servers saved my company 1000's of dollars in software licensing.
- pinchduck, on 04/16/2009, -0/+5This is awesome! Unfortunately I only found out about them after I ordered my laptop, a T61 from Lenovo, with SUSE installed on it. I thought it was great to get a laptop with the penguin pre-installed. Unfortunately Lenovo has dropped support for Linux since then, so I wish that I had been able to support this company. Next time I'll definitely go with them.
- Chupacabraz, on 04/16/2009, -3/+8Going from $100 in revenue to $160 in revenue is a 60 percent increase in revenue. Without some real numbers, a 60% increase by itself is utterly meaningless.
- tbrotherofasis, on 04/16/2009, -0/+5Yes... Every time a new release comes out, there's greater hardware support. When I installed ubuntu in my hp pavilion dv6000 laptop two years ago, I had to struggle a lot, but I can't help but becoming pleasantly impressed every time a new distro comes out, and I just see more and more hardware, that used to be called not-linux-friendly, working just fine out of the box.
My current install is 8.04, but I will make a fresh install of 9.04 when it comes out next week, cause I have tested the beta Live CD, and all the hardware has full support now on my machine. - Vadi0, on 04/16/2009, -0/+5I can't vouch for other models, but I'm a happy system76 customer (best support I ever got is from them) and my model is a Compal.
It has a fingerprint reader which didn't work with Linux before - but they donated one to some guy and he made the drivers for it. Now everyone on Linux can use the reader. Pretty nice of them. - Ki77erB, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4Lets digg him up just to ***** with his head.
- DocHoliday22, on 04/16/2009, -6/+10I'm a Mac guy. Ubuntu is OK. I used it for several years, but back then things use to break and you didn't have any support so you were stuck asking the community for help. It's nice to see some official support for an OS that has a lot of potential.
Synaptic was the best thing, you had ALL the apps in there so no need to search the web for crap. Kinda miss using it. - ybotoby, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4Little high, I agree. A dell Ubuntu PC with the same components at only $633. No option to boost your graphics card on Dell site though. This is compared to System76's system at $853
- Dumbledorito, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4It's not a trolling effort, it's (quite healthy) cynicism about company reports. Until you get concrete numbers, percentages don't tell you the whole story. An increase in sales can still mean you're operating in the red due to inventory costs or that your sales aren't yet covering expenses.
- Warom, on 04/16/2009, -1/+5I think Ubuntu is fantastic, but it is the kind of OS that MAKES you play with it, you just keep wanting to customise everything until you get to the point where you turn it on and you are presented with a black screen. Obviously not a Ubuntu problem more of a problem with me, but still, it means I can't use it. Also, something seem a bit silly still, like Gnome Do Docky blocks using the bottom half of the desktop, the way compositing seems a bit of a "tacked" on thing rather than Aero and Aero Basic. Anyway, Ubuntu Koala should be good, Jaunty doesn't really show much change.
- tnoy, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4Exactly. You can have a 60% increase in revenue, and a 20% drop in profits.
You'd also be firing a few people that worked for the company if that were to happen, though. - Elranzer, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4Anyone know which ODM they use? They're not big enough to make their OWN laptops. Likely Clevo or Compal, but there's no indication.
- MacHarborGuy, on 04/16/2009, -0/+4wah wah
- inactive, on 04/16/2009, -2/+6You've been watching too much Star Trek. :-p
- Vadi0, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3Comparing it spec to spec, 76 was way cheaper when I bought my equivalent of a macbook pro.
- FreeBooteR69, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3You love it, but what are you saying here? That the ability to alter everything in GNU/Linux is a bad thing and that the user needs to be restricted?
I've been messing with my desktop constantly, have Compiz-Fusion, AWN, and conky running with all kinds of tweaks and i haven't managed to break anything. Personally i think you have to actively work hard to break the system to make it stop working, lol.
Try out Cairo-Dock, see if it is a little less intrusive. - ethana2, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3Bingo. That's why I prefer Ubuntu over OS X.
Check out gnome-do docky, gnome-globalmenu, and Kernel Mode Setting. We're getting there. - travist120, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3The thing is, System76 sells hardware that is COMPLETELY compatible. You won't have to hassle with non working webcams or ***** up sound systems.
Dell and HP sometimes has problems with that. - the8thbit, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3"Anyway, Ubuntu Koala should be good, Jaunty doesn't really show much change."
Except an entirely new file-system? - geehossiphats, on 04/16/2009, -1/+4why is it awful?
- JosedeNoche, on 04/16/2009, -1/+4great news, keep up the good work
- buggles, on 04/16/2009, -2/+5Not to diminish anything from System76, but I just got a cheap Acer Aspire One Netbook for $350, loaded it with a beta version of Jaunty Ubuntu 9.04 and this system is GREAT (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UNR, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne)
- the8thbit, on 04/16/2009, -0/+3laptop fairy.
- priegog, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2Not so much expensive as that they just can't make crazy deals they way the big companies get for bulk production.
I actually looked at their lines and it saddens me to see here isn't a single one (or even the option) to change the processor to an AMD one.
Sure the old Atholn XP64 X2 can't compete with the core 2 duos, but the newer phenom (and later this year the phenom II)-based ones sure as hell can. But AMD has never been about the cutting-edge, but rather the mid-range for the price of an intel bottom-shelf processo.
Specially in this economy. - Vadi0, on 04/16/2009, -1/+3None of their computers cost $100 to begin with.
- ethana2, on 04/16/2009, -1/+3Regretful purchaser of an Ubuntu Dell.
Stick to Apple or system76, if you value your sanity. - RudeTurnip, on 04/16/2009, -1/+3If only there was a word in the English language that more accurately expressed this idea. I wonder if we could borrow something from say...German?
