People on digg are completely unable to detect sarcasm without a /sarcasm tag - corevette, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25video of demonstration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNlVrqtBHq4
- Afraithe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21Very nice software, to bad it hasn't been any updates for a long time, there are quite a few bugs and problems.
- elnerdo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22Has anybody else noticed that the comment I'm replying to and the six(6) comments before it all basically say the same thing?
- Klowner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Yeah, like clipboard content randomly not making the trip from system to system, which annoys me to no end. But still, it's pretty darn cool.
- N4KMM, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19Synergy is a wonderful tool, but was this not on the front page less than 2 weeks ago?
- mugdecoffee, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21Apparently someone decided that the 10th comment saying "nice little program" was unnecessary.
- jking2100, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21Multiplicity is a windows only app. So you are stuck with just windows systems...Mono-boring
- MattS, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17I think everyone is simply trying to compliment the app and its developers - deservedly so...
- insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16This is a great application, I have been using it for years now. As of late it allows me to control a mac from a keyboard and mouse connected to a windows machine.
- RCcola159, on 10/11/2007, -7/+21I don't know what i would do if synergy wasn't made. It really helps while doing reports, or just being productive on digg.
- kurtistyler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Yeah, I've been using this program for a little over a year now. I have no idea what I would do without it. Its great to create a bigger working space for image/audio editting.
There are about 10 programs that I wouldn't be able to live without. This is one of them. - Vasto, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12An amazing program. I started using it about a week ago. It lets me only use one keyboard to control my linux box from my PC. (I use my linux box as a webserver but I also run GAIM on it, so this makes life a lot easier).

Maybe Synergy was on the front page before. As many have noted, this app has been out for some time, and it has a great following. Clearly new people are being introduced to it because the article that was posted about Synergy went up yesterday morning.
I would love to see a mash up of Synergy and RealVNC... Move the mouse off the right side of the screen and not only the mouse and keyboard are connected to another machine, but so is the monitor... - boxc, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14apparently someone doesn't like synergy and is digging all comments down.. great program
- zero4281, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I agree this is a nice program. Too bad it hasn't been updated since April 2006. I fear it might have been left by the way side by the developers.
- nukem996, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11umm its open source. Fix it yourself.
- captmega, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Agreed. Been using synergy for years to connect windows machines and Linux machines together like they were one. At this point, I could not go back to a world without it. It's unfortunate that development seems to have stalled....
Mad props to Chris Schoeneman for writing one amazing little app. - dbr_onix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8"I would love to see a mash up of Synergy and RealVNC... Move the mouse off the right side of the screen and not only the mouse and keyboard are connected to another machine, but so is the monitor..."
You could just use a desktop-manager application that allows you to use "hot-corners" to switch screens. When the mouse is too the left, it flicks to your VNC desktop.
There's other interesting, similar applications, like "Maxivista" [ http://www.maxivista.com/ ] (For OS X there's "Screen Recycler" or something, never looked into one for Linux and such, but I dont imagine it'd be too difficult to do with a combination of Synergy and VNC's source code) - which lets you move applications running on a single computer to a networked computer - So you could have two monitors on one PC, and another two on another computer, and they'll act as one single huge monitor setup (And there's no limit on how many computers can be added, so you could theoretically have infinite monitors on one computer..). According to the website over a wired LAN (I've only used it over a wireless network) it's fast enough to play back fullscreen video. I tried the demo a while ago and it worked well, but I never really had the need for multiple monitors on a single PC (I'd prefer having each monitor connected to a different psychical machine, which synergy is perfect for), but I'm sure someone will. - thetron, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9It's been on digg a couple of times now and along with hak5
- festivalman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6The only problem with synergy is that it hasn't been updated in more than a year now. There's a few bugs that stand out, like the mouse getting choppy after a while and the clipboard functionality being spotty at best. It's sad that no one else has taken over the project.
- PalmerEldritch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6When the clipboard stops synchronizing you just need to force a reconnect on the server. If you have a windows box set up as server, just right click the Synergy icon and choose Force Reconnect. That will get the clipboards working again. Since I found that trick, I have not had any trouble with Synergy. I use it to control 3 Windows boxes, 2 Linux, and a Mac. Works like a charm.
- psyjoniz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Synergy has been out for quite some time. Awesome app. My roommate and I have like 6 machines running all different OS's (xp,bsd, linux, mac) and two notebooks (one XP and one Mac) controlling them. They are all tied into both notebooks so we can actually control the same machine at the same time (though that functionality needs a bit of tweaking). We try to use it for code collaboration but we usually just end up fighting over the media machine's current focus :P
- weneedsound, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I agree. I've been waiting since I found about the program nearly a year ago, for the file sharing via drag'n'drop feature they mentioned.
- ilovenicotine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I've been using synergy for about a year now. It's in my top 5 apps.
Not only does it share keyboard and mouse but it shares the clipboard as well!
It's not perfect but I can't believe how well it works.
It does have a couple of bugs. If your "server" computer (the one hosting the mouse and keyboard) is working hard copying files or un-raring something, Synergy will lag to unusable status temporarily. Although since I got a Dual Core I haven't noticed this.
And sometimes the clipboard acts weird. There are times when it doesn't work and other times when I have to hit paste twice before it works. 30 seconds later it will paste the second time, lol. (I've only seen this in gedit on ubuntu btw).
I made a little icon on my task bar that links to a bash script killing synergy client then restarting and everything works perfectly again.
I've recommended Synergy to everyone with two or more computers of any type, and they all love it.
My boss goes 4 monitors + laptop deep because he can now! - SpacePirate, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5There is a nice, easy to use GUI for mac, including Bonjour support. It also has support for text copy and paste over multiple machines, which is nice.
http://software.landryhetu.com/synergy/ - xspinkickx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4this is a great cross platform, I cant live without synergy.
- jking2100, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5MattS
That would be a great mashup, I was actually thinking about that my self especially for a headless vmware server - Znith, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Great program, one I cannot live without.
- Tonytastic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4one of my favorite programs at the office, awesome program.
- rorian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Been using this proggie for a few weeks now - very, very cool (except when an application locks up and eats your input :()
Transparent copy & paste (of text, not files, sadly) is also very cool.. - kazoolist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah, Synergy isn't anything new (I've been using it for years - http://kazoolist.blogspot.com/2006/12/tools-i-use-synergy.html) but it is fantastic and nothing wrong with giving it some Digg front page publicity.
- brinkness, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3As I said in the previous 1 or 2 submissions about synergy: note that the communication between computers is not secure. This is important if you plan on using this for any kind of administration purposes -- you're sending your passwords in the clear over the network.
- Cimlite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3VNC is for remote control of a machine. Synergy is for controlling multiple local computers with local screens from one keyboard/mouse.
It's not really two comparable pieces of software. - sednax, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Great program, I always use it when working. Saves a lot of time!
- switcher, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7It's nice, but I think Multiplicity is nicer :) Haven't used Synergy for a while though so maybe it's improved now
- ElectricKetchup, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The big difference between x2x and x2vnc and synergy is that synergy allows you to connect more than 2 systems together and it's pretty stable.
The only bad thing about synergy is that it doesn't seem to be aware of the XRANDR extension so everytime I resize my desktop/laptop, I have to restart synergy. Also, it's kinda lame that it doesn't have any security built into it... it would be extremly easy to code in support for gnutls. - sephiroth4, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3http://abyssoft.com/software/teleport/
another for mac....been usin' since alpha days. - shawnz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2apparently microsoft employees have access to a windows-only keyboard/mouse driver which is supposed to work a little bit better than synergy for windows (more compatible, works with vista+uac, etc, etc). i haven't been able to find it yet, though.
- cwl157, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2yep, same as a lot of people, i've been using this for a while now and can't live without it.
- jking2100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeah but some people have more than one machine and do not want to spend $50 or more on a kvm...This is a great alternative
- ripzone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I am using it for a few weeks now. The only bug I could find is related to international keyboard layouts. The accents don't work very well while connected to the client.
- djdole, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3http://digg.com/search?s=synergy2.sourceforge.net&submit=Search§ion=news&type=url&area=all&sort=new
Am not going to spend any more time on this blog-spam submission.
(a few lines of config code for ONE setup configuration does not make this blog a "great write up and tutorial for this awesome app".
Marked as LAME,
and I'll give my digg to a more deserving submission from the above list.
(FOR PEAT'S SAKE, talk about unoriginal! The NEWEST submission from the above list is still FAR older than this blog submission. O_O ) - stiankarlsen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Been using this for a long time, actually. Great program, two thumbs up.
- jking2100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@error601
The difference is with vnc you have one monitor and are controlling via a window the remote machine whether it is right next to you or across the country. Taking up real estate and resources on your workstation.
If you have a laptop that you carry between work and home or you have multiple systems that all have their own monitors, why have multiple keyboards and multiple mice cluttering and confusing your desk. Synergy allows you to control multiple systems that each have thier own monitors in place of a kvm. - cabazorro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2For all of us geeks carrying a laptop to work Synergy really kicks butt when you just flip your lappy open next to your beefed up workstation and bam! w/ your workstation's mouse+keboard you start working your laptop. You have 2 screens, two computers one keyboard+mouse. It makes KVM's look so lame. In my thoughts I put Synergy's technology right there with Bittorrent. Your heard me right. Is that good. And yes, you can read my thoughts...miau, miau, miau, miau, miau..
- PovRayMan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I came here exactly to post that. The clipboard randomly dying is the most annoying bug ever. I have to restart the synergy server several times a day just to get it working again. Other than that, synergy is a completely awesome program.
- Axsuul, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Synergy is great, except there are still a few bugs and feature requests that it needs but the development seems to be frozen.
