- schestowitz, on 05/07/2008, -4/+24It all began with the Fedora/AMD OLPC, which had Intel offer considerable discounts to Asustek and also started this wave of products where the price was not *fixed*. It's very disruptive to Microsoft and Intel just could not afford to stay out because it wishes to continue its all-or-nothing kickbacks/dumping crusade to eliminate competition in x86.
- bdjohnso10, on 05/07/2008, -0/+18I'm waiting for Ubuntu to come out with its mobile platform for Nokia's N800
- HillerMylife, on 07/24/2008, -0/+15Sort of like Single, Sane, and Pretty, eh?
Though the killer for me isn't so much speed -- I can live with that -- it's the 400px vertical resolution. - Ademan, on 05/07/2008, -0/+13Only this IS linux's biggest chance as of yet to shine. First, the advantage of being cheap on very cheap hardware cannot be understated. Then there's linux's ability to run extremely well on cheap hardware, and then there's the fact that in this emerging market, linux already has a foothold.
- tetsuo29, on 05/07/2008, -2/+14This is a decent article. Unfortunately, it misses the key point that will help drive Linux adoption on cheap ultraportables- the disappearance of XP. Vista will in no way be able to compete with Linux on the slower, less capable hardware of these ultraportables. If Microsoft really stops shipping a version of their OS that can actually run on these devices, then Linux will suddenly become the default standard.
- inactive, on 05/07/2008, -0/+11Even as a windows user, you're really ignorant.
- lonehunter01, on 05/07/2008, -1/+11"unknown name like Linux..."
I can't put into words just how stupid you are. - weizbox, on 05/07/2008, -5/+15I'm waiting for Android :)
- reginaldino, on 05/07/2008, -1/+11i had respect for the author up to
"but even somewhat tailored standard desktop Linux operating systems can't match Windows for ease of use or application support." - CCmachined, on 05/07/2008, -0/+9yo m$ fanboy, wjhy do you think 88 million Vista machines have been sold?
BECAUSE ITS THE ONLY ***** PC OS YOU CAN BUY WITH A STANDARD PC NOW
***** idiots. - Ganpachi, on 05/07/2008, -0/+9Ah the classic trilemma. You can it cheap, have it fast or have it ultraportable. Pick any two but you can't have all three.
- adderx99, on 05/07/2008, -7/+16this is the year linux goes mainstream, again, for the 10th year, in a row.
- LeeSoong, on 05/07/2008, -5/+14Yay Linux !

So many choices, or get Linux preinstalled.
If only the PC companies would stop forcing you to pay Microsoft
for Vista Home Basic, that you end up formatting over anyway... - craighamnett, on 05/07/2008, -2/+10The trouble is still the "normal" folk haven't got a clue... a computer is supposed to say Microsoft when you start it up. Unfortunately for us, their branding has been one of the best successes rivalling that of Coca Cola and Harley Davidson.
- cyberwiz01, on 05/07/2008, -0/+8Don't feed the trolls.
Just use the little red button. - gandhii, on 05/07/2008, -0/+7This article sucked. It is totally lacking that ... umm.. what do they call it?.. oh yea. Content!
A hand full of short paragraphs and it warms up to the subject matter... then suddenly the article is done. WTF?! Reminds me of one my essays from back in high school when I didn't really know the answer to the question. - dpcamp, on 05/07/2008, -0/+7i really enjoyed you're comment, i'm gonna go on my PC right now and make a pie chart of how much i enjoyed this!
- maninalift, on 05/07/2008, -0/+6Atari Portfolio
- priegog, on 05/07/2008, -1/+7Different OS for completely different kind of product.
- nattybohman, on 05/07/2008, -0/+6I agree. I thought "maybe application support, but ease of use?".
If someone with no computer experience at all sat down at a linux box and a vista box, I truly believe they'd have just as easy a time with either one.
It's just people who are used to windows who'd have a slight learning curve. (very slight at that) - InsaneMachine, on 05/07/2008, -0/+6sarcasm?
- cyberwiz01, on 05/07/2008, -0/+6You pirate linux?
- vertexoflife, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5Because it is.
- inactive, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5Linux - Good, fast, AND cheap.
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -0/+5Yes.
- Atomic1fire, on 05/08/2008, -0/+4Android is also Linux based...
- ucg1, on 05/07/2008, -1/+5Linux makes me happy
- plr4ever, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4**Free
- gandhii, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4I'd say Linux has a good deal more than a foothold in this market.
- JrGhoull, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3its slowly changing. movies dont like to pay to use MS on their computers (i'm speaking of computers actually IN the movies) not to mention i bet they like to create their own look. people are going to see the computer screens, think about how cool they look, go on the internet, discover its linux, and start messing around with it. burn a cd...hopefully ubuntu...it could be cool
iron man..though doubtfully the first major movie with linux in it...is a good example. - nxsty, on 05/07/2008, -1/+4If I remember correctly it was some kind of Atari computer. I wonder if they actually had a model like that.
- yoda17, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3"grandparents keeping MSN tv alive"
YUP - gandhii, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3Well.. 2007 was the year of the Linux Desktop for me. Both of my computers run linux these days. Only one of them has a basic XP install on a spare HD for when I need to run certain CS3 apps and activesync. I like the feel of the desktop better than both Windows and OSX, which I use profusely at work. It runs all the internet, office and media apps I used before. Takes advantage of the full power of my hardware, 64bit, multicore, etc. In these days of multiplatform open source programming, having to use any one particular OS to run a particular app kind of feels like an old fashioned idea that is way behind the times.
- 0260, on 05/07/2008, -2/+4did they just say that andriod is linux?
- swab, on 05/07/2008, -1/+3I suspect we are going to see a rebranded XP for this new class of cheap ultra portables. They'd be stupid not to.
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Wrong for you. What you would consider "wroth using" I would laugh at.
- CCmachined, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Atari laptop, yeah xD
- Stonekeeper, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Meh, let peeing carry on.
- benplaut, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2It's a helluva lot closer in this past year, from what I can see. When I tell someone I run Linux, they know what it is, and I've found many who have tried ubuntu. Non techies.
Still a long way to go, though. - gekkoeye, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2It's 800x480 according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eee_pc
- matthewjhughes, on 05/07/2008, -3/+5Crap. What was that computer from Terminator 2 called that could hack into ATMS? I want!
- adraft, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2I ordered an Eee PC like two months ago from Amazon and they keep pushing the delivery date back. Is there something I don't know or can ASUS just not keep up with demand?
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2Your TiVo runs what?
- adraft, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1What the heck? I ordered an 8g black EEEpc. This is seriously messed up, now I'm left with no laptop for exam week.
- rizla420, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1If it runs maemo should someone be able to strip down ubuntu and stick it on there? Granted your probably looking for something a lot more user friend in terms of installation... ubuntu mobile seems to be coming around the corner.
- webcrumb, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1From a review of the laptop's product page:
"The OS is ''Zonbu''. This is a very Windo-fied KDE over Gentoo Linux." - inactive, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1How are you not getting this?
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1The best part - OS X won't run on your ultraportable, AND we obviously knew what you meant. Except dpcamp i guess he's an idiot.
And why would you boot XP or OS X on a portable machine anyways? Linux can be made to run better in these sorts of environments. - rizla420, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1I was in a similar position. I opted to buy an "ultraportable" laptop from ebay for $270. Its a Dell D400 that I slapped ubuntu on. Its a 1.6Ghz and has 512megs of ram and 40GB hard drive. It's perfect as my little laptop to take around or just keep in the living room. If i need more horsepower i go to my desktop or my servers. Doing my configs from my laptop is much more "fun" than being stuck at my pc.
- spydon, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1I'm waiting for OpenMoko :)
